Ana, who just finished her Jr. year in Interior Architecture at UT, Austin, is home doing an internship in Arlington with the company that just completed a huge contract redoing parts of the interior of Dallas oldest hotel, the Adolphus Hotel. Wendy and I will enjoy having her home for the summer. Secondly, our entire family is getting together in July near Fredericksburg for a weekend. Thirdly, Wendy and I will visit our families in Minnesota and Iowa just before the August NALC National Luther Week (which lasts three days go figure) in Nashville, TN. After the Luther Week is over we will spend a night with Stefan s wife s parents in Nashville. We look forward to all of these family moments. Simply put, relationships take time. There is great blessing there, but only if you make time and room for it. I hope you make time and room this summer for your family and friends as well. Sometimes you have to spend a little money to do it. But it is worth it. Besides these family moments, I intend to get more exercise. In order to gain more energy sometimes we need to exert energy. This is already penciled in to my daily schedule. I suggest you do the same. You will be glad you did it. Lastly, and you knew this was coming, there is my relationship with my Heavenly Father and his Son. I intend to make even more time and room for prayer and the scriptures. I have found my back patio to be a perfect Mission Statement: To discover and respond to our call ( Continued on page 2.) TO KNOW JESUS TO FOLLOW JESUS TO SERVE JESUS 1
2 (Continued from page 1.) place for this, early in the morning, before the day heats up. I have never been sorry I made more time and room for God. I have never felt the energy exerted was not richly returned. It is the same for you as well. Don t just pencil it in to your schedule. Write it in ink. (And note the VBS article later in this newsletter.) Pastor Joel Updates from the church council and the semi-annual congregational meeting on May 28, Note on the budget: We are actually doing quite well right now. We are about $1000 in the black. Other good news is that our insurance awarded us $95,000 for hail damage to the roof and awnings. They have already issued a check for $55,000 and will send the rest after the repairs are made. We will be searching prayerfully for the right metal roofer. Elections: On the ballot were Raymond Luster for president-elect and Clay York for member-atlarge. Both were elected unanimously. Nominating Committee: Our nominating committee for next year is in place. Members are Carolee Juergens, Barbara York, Raymond Luster and Pastor Joel. Daycare Lease: The Council, with Joe Kyle s support, went over the lease last week and made changes based on suggestions. If the congregation passes the motion, the lease will be looked at by a lawyer. They had requested to have the deposit split up into 3 installments, $500 each of the first two months, and then the final $1000. They could start as early as June 1 if the lawyer gives the lease the okay. The state currently licenses them for 18 students. A sliding rate is built into the contract if they should go over 20 students, so at some point in the future if the state changes their license we would need someone to monitor this. We do not currently have a liaison, and Pastor Joel has been filling this spot. Valerie Peterson volunteered to fill this position. A previous concern had been about having someone on call for any repairs that may be needed, and it was announced that the council has secured a handyman who will be on call as needed. This is a two-year contract, and will be looked at again at that time, but Pastor Joel does not foresee them being a problem. A concern over keys and who would have access was raised, both for our protection and that of the children involved. They will have two keys and if they issue any other keys they must give us a list of names and numbers of persons with access. They will also be installing cameras within three months. On the topic of restrooms, they decided they did not have to install any additional toilets in the restrooms, as they will be able to use stepstools for the children. Our toilets are old and that is the problem they have with the flow, rather than the septic system. It was suggested that we take pictures of the building before they move in. Outgoing Council members Ed Longstreet and Joe Kyle were given thanks for their service on the Council. 2
3 VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL June 12-14, 6-8:30pm Pray Always! Light Dinner will be served on all evenings! RSVP to Pastor Wendy. ALSO, let her know if you would like to attend but are unable to come on these dates. We will find some alternative dates. Vacation Bible School for CHILDREN will be offered as well! Our focus will be on prayer. Parents of children must RSVP so we can plan! June 12 PART 1: Prayer, Anointing with Oil & Laying on of Hands: Teaching & Training Anointing with oil, laying on of hands and praying with people are powerful scriptural practices that have been used throughout time. The living God uses these practices to heal, empower and fill people with confidence, encouragement and boldness. In this training, we will study the Holy Scriptures, have conversation and try out what we are learning. Come to learn or to be trained as a prayer minister so that you can gain confidence over time to pray with people during Sunday worship or in your everyday life. This teaching will be in two parts on separate evenings (June 6 & June 8). June 13 LISTENING PRAYER: Recognizing Jesus Speaking to You! Do you know how to recognize the personal practical voice of Jesus? In John 10:4, Jesus taught: the sheep follow the good shepherd, for they know his voice. Jesus speaks His word to us in four ways: written word (Scriptures), spoken word, (e.g., preaching), revealed word ( still small voice ), and the Word made flesh. During our time together, we will wait and listen for Jesus to speak, using time -tested practices that have been used throughout history for recognizing Jesus personal voice. June 14 PART 2: Prayer, Anointing with Oil & Laying on of Hands: Teaching & Training Vacation Bible School for CHILDREN will be offered as well! Our focus will be on prayer. Parents of children must RSVP so we can plan! 3

6 Teen Challenge Adult July 9 th, 10:00 am Worship Service On July 9 th we will host a singing group from Teen Challenge for Adults. They will sing for us and share what God has done for them in testimony. Here is a summary of the Teen Challenge Program: The Induction Phase (5 Months) A faith-based approach, teaching biblical principles through group studies and personal studies. Individual mentoring, helping students uncover old destructive behavior patterns which led them to and kept them in a lifestyle of addiction. A new way to think about life which helps students begin the process of making better choices. The Training Phase (5 Months) A faith-based approach, applying phase I biblical principles in real world environments. Offers group studies teaching the five components of recovery. A vocational program in which the students are literally employed, paying their own tuition, saving their own money while in the program. The Re-Entry Phase (2 Months) A faith-based approach toward making real life decisions based on their new Godly character. A process in which students and their mentor plan an exit strategy covering the 6 components of transition and financial direction: employment, communication, transportation, home church, recovery maintenance plan, and a place to live. We will host them to bring us the day s message. After the service you will have opportunity to talk with them and buy crafts they have made. A free-will offering will be taken. 6
