2 Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost September 16, 2018 We greet you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Whoever you are and wherever you are in your journey of faith, you are welcome in this community celebrating God s Spirit in the world. God s grace meets us in the water and Word, and in the bread and wine. We are here to know the touch of God s forgiveness and love and to hear God s calling in our lives. Please introduce yourself to others here and to the pastor. GATHERING Three weeks ago we heard John s gospel s version of Peter s confession of faith. This week we hear Mark s version, when Peter says, You are the Messiah. In John, the stumbling block is Jesus invitation to eat his flesh, given for the life of the world. In Mark too the scandal has to do with Jesus words about his own coming death, and here Peter himself stumbles over Jesus words. But Jesus is anointed (the meaning of messiah ) in Mark only on the way to the cross (14:3); so we are anointed in baptism with the sign of the cross. 5 Prayer of the Day Let us pray. O God, through suffering and rejection you bring forth our salvation, and by the glory of the cross you transform our lives. 6 WORD Reading Isaiah 50: 4-9a printed on back The image of the servant of the Lord is one of the notable motifs in the book of Isaiah. Today s reading describes the mission of the servant, whom early Christians associated with Jesus. Like Jesus, the servant does not strike back at his detractors but trusts in God s steadfast love. 17 Communion We believe that in the bread and wine of communion we receive Christ s body and blood for our forgiveness, life, and salvation. From Your Stewardship Committee Intercambio Potluck Advent hosted our first Intercambio potluck yesterday and another scheduled for Saturday, October 20 th with a performance at noon and a potluck to follow at 1:00 P.M. The format of the Intercambio Potlucks is to speak for 30 minutes in Spanish and then for 30 minutes in English. If you don t know even a single word of Spanish, do not be afraid! You will learn at least one or two new words or phrases and get to share the company of delightful people you may not know yet, along with a shared meal. It s a time for relaxation, joy, fun, celebration of the new thing we are doing together, and new relationships. You may have already learned one new word intercambio. We will have some simple phrase sheets available for non- Spanish speakers to use as you like. The BCAC is a part of a larger vision of our church. We as a church want to contribute toward growing The Beloved Community in South County. What is The Beloved Community? We all benefit when we know, respect, help and delight in the people who are our neighbors and when our neighbors do so for us. We depend upon one another. Our lives are richer when we are amazed by our differences and can learn with one another and from one another. The vision of The Beloved Community comes to life when we live in this way. The Beloved Community overcomes isolation and fear with relationships of care, justice and creativity. This is God s vision for life on this earth. All who attend Saturday s potluck are invited to take the communion elements to the altar for recognition of your stewardship at Advent and to receive a blessing from Pastor Anita. 26 Announcements Discovery Class Animate Faith The Animate Faith course explores the fundamentals of Christian faith and the Lutheran tradition. This is a good course to take for adults or which school youth who are exploring faith questions or membership at Advent or adult confirmation. We will meet on Sunday mornings, 11:00 A.M. Noon, in Room 1. Please RSVP with Pastor Anita (pastorw@advent-lutheran.org) who will lead this course or contact her with any questions you have. The course will include brief DVD presentations, conversation, journaling time, and brief sharing from Church Council leaders. Please visit for schedule and course topics. Sermon Conversations Beginning Today, people who would like to reflect further upon the scriptures, music, sermon and prayers from worship are invited to meet with Pastor Lee Tyler in the Library, 11:00 A.M. - Noon. Children s Time Begins Today Beginning September 16, children will leave worship after communion for Children's Time in Rooms 9 and 10. We hope all children preschool through 6th grade will join in the fun and learning! Sunday's scriptures will form the basis of the lesson, so that the conversation can continue all week at home. Food of the Month Advent collects non-perishable food for the Reach Out food bank at St. Catherine Church in Morgan Hill. Food of the month for September is peanut butter and jelly in honor of Back to School. Other items welcome anytime are: tuna, canned fruits/vegetables, rice, beans, hearty soup/chili, and even baby diapers. Items can be placed in the white wire baskets near the office at Advent. 26

27 Oktoberfest The Stewardship Committee is looking forward to kicking off the Fall Program on Saturday, September 22nd at 5:00 P.M. with Oktoberfest. It's the time we gather to enjoy fellowship with members of the congregation as we enjoy sausages, buns, drinks, beer, and wine, as well as dishes that we all bring to complement the main course. Advent may not draw the millions of participants that come to Munich for Oktoberfest each September, but this popular event is likely to attract as many as a hundred people who enjoy hearty, delicious German dishes. Again this year Kyle Jones will put together a memorable musical program, and we will be sure to have activities that children enjoy as well. Plan to join us and bring one of your favorite fall dishes! Please RSVP to the church office by September 20. Third Quarter Mission Project For the third quarter, Advent Lutheran has selected Lutheran World Relief (LWR) as our third quarter mission project. LWR is providing direct support to the families who are currently displaced by the war in their country. The last time we gave support to this organization, it was to help refugees who were here in the U.S. This time we are assisting those people who are still in the Middle East. Please consider helping these families who have been affected by war and conflict. Worthy to be Praised: A Gospel Celebration Music at Advent Lutheran will presenting Worthy to be Praised: A Gospel Celebration for its mid-fall concert on October 7 at 5:30 P.M. The repertoire will include works such as Robert Ray s Gospel Mass, Byron Smith s Worthy to Be Praised, Jeffrey Ames Let Everything That Hath Breath. Other selections will include some soulful settings of Amazing Grace, Blessed Assurance, and His Eye Is On The Sparrow! In addition, the Festival Choir will be accompanied by local guest artists Juanita Harris & Beverly Blount, soloists; Jason Bellenkes, Sax; Andoni Bundros, piano; Bruce Naylor, Bass; and Peppe Merolla, Drums. You don t want to miss out on what s sure to be joyful and memorable concert. All are invited! There is no cost to attend, but we will gratefully a free-will offering to help support Music at Advent. 27

28 New Life Band Save the Date New Life Band will be performing at Advent the weekend of October There will be a concert on Saturday, October 13th at 7:00 P.M. and they will also lead music for worship on Sunday, October 14th. New Life Band from Tanzania, East Africa, is an inter-denominational ministry that serves as an instrument to transform the lives of youth and students within Tanzania through the gospel of Jesus Christ by giving them hope and opportunity.
