2 Second Sunday after Epiphany January 20, 2019 We greet you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Whoever you are and wherever you are in your journey of faith, you are welcome in this community celebrating God s Spirit in the world. God s grace meets us in the water and Word, and in the bread and wine. We are here to know the touch of God s forgiveness and love and to hear God s calling in our lives. GATHERING The Sundays after Epiphany continue to celebrate the revelation of the glory of God to us as it was made known to the magi and to those on Jordan s banks at the baptism of Jesus today using wedding imagery. Our God rejoices over God s people as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride. By the power of the Spirit there are gifts galore for everyone. In Christ Jesus the best wine is saved for last. Church Council Installation The membership of the Congregational Council consists of the Pastor, officers of the congregation, and the chairpersons of the committees listed in bylaw C The officers of this congregation are President, 1 st Vice-president, 2 nd Vice-president, Secretary, Treasurer, and Financial Secretary. Advent has standing committees whose chairpersons shall be members of the Council. Those committees are Faith Development, Worship and Music, Stewardship, Operations, Communications and Community Connections. Members of the council, except the Pastor shall be elected at the annual congregational meeting. The term of office shall be for two years with approximately one half elected each year. 23 The church council meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7:00 in the Berkland Fellowship Hall. All are invited and encouraged to attend. Interfaith Service Interfaith CommUNITY of South County invites all to join in this worship service commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on January 21 at 7:00 P.M. In a time when conflict and violence are seemingly rampant in our nation and world, we look to those leaders who have inspired us with a mission and ministry of peace as a means to resolve differences and tension among peoples. This service will be held at St. Mary Parish located at 11 1st Street in Gilroy. 23

24 Annual Reports Are Available Please pick up a copy of the 2018 Annual Report at church this Sunday. Pastor, staff, Council and other ministry leaders have written reports about all the good ministries we have done together in the past year. The report also contains financial reports and the 2019 budget Council is recommending to the congregation. Bring your report with you to the annual congregational meeting on Sunday, January 27, at 11:00 AM Annual reports will also be available on Advent s website starting Tuesday, January 22. Tuesday Morning Bible Study Tuesday morning Bible study will begin a 9 week study of the book of Jeremiah, one of the major prophets of the Old Testament and often quoted in the New Testament. We will use a study guide authored by Stephen Dyre, entitled Demanding Love. The topics to be covered are centered around the themes of impending judgment and living in the midst of God s judgment. This study will begin on January 22. The group meets in the Library at church, 10:00-11:30 AM and invites you to come and study together. Congregational Meeting On Sunday, Jan. 27 at 11:00 A.M., we will hold a Congregational Meeting following worship in the fellowship hall. 25 Food of the Month Advent collects non-perishable food for the Reach Out food bank at St. Catherine Church in Morgan Hill. Foods for the month of January are baby food & diapers. Other items welcome anytime are: tuna, canned fruits/vegetables, rice, beans, hearty soup/chili, and even baby diapers. Items can be placed in the white wire baskets near the office at Advent. First Quarter Mission For the first quarter, Advent Lutheran has selected the International Rescue Committee (IRC) as our first quarter mission project as they provide lifesaving emergency aid, clean water and medical care to millions of people in Yemen affected by violent conflict and a growing health crisis. Yemen has been embroiled in a bitter civil war since 2015 as the Saudi- and Emirati-led coalition supports the government of President Hadi against the Houthi movement that controls the capital, Sanaa. 24 million people remain in need of humanitarian assistance and the United Nations warned in late 2018 that the country risked facing a massive famine. According to the most recent assessments, 63,500 Yemenis are experiencing catastrophe levels of food insecurity. Yemen is also home to the worst cholera outbreak in modern history, with over one million affected. Please prayerfully consider donating to this most urgent mission.
