1 Providing Support and Leadership for the Catholic Charismatic Renewal Volume 46 Number 5 SCRC SPIRIT Southern California Renewal Communities September / October 2018 An excerpt from a talk given at the 2013 National Leaders and Ministries Conference in Denver titled: New Pentecost, New Evangelization There is a new Pentecost for this new evangelization, for the new people of God. We have new hearts. We have new hands. We have a new tongue. There is this new evangelization, there is this fresh fire that God has available for us. I m reminded of what John Paul II said to the Latin Bishops: the commemoration of the half millennium of evangelization will gain its full energy if it is committed not to a re-evangelization, but to a new evangelization: new in its ardor, methods, and expression. He specifically said not a reevangelization. It made me think that re-evangelization is like something you put in the microwave, and you put it in a second time and it kind of gets cooked, and after the third time it s kind of like: why bother. God is not saying for us a re-evangelization. He s saying: fresh fire, extravagant grace! A new ardor that burns within us, so that we say Yes, Lord, I will do this! Not yesterday, not the day before, not tomorrow, I will do this today! In the book Baptism in the Holy Spirit (by the ICCRS Doctrinal Commission), I was struck in the conclusion because it has to do with a new Pentecost for a new evangelization. It quotes Paul VI: The Church needs her perennial Pentecost. He used the word perennial. She needs fire in her heart, words on her lips, prophecy in her outlook. You know what the word perennial means? Now, I m a gardener and I love perennials because they come back the next year, they give me hope that they are coming back the next year. A perennial is present at all seasons of the year. That s what we are to have, a perennial Pentecost, present at all seasons of the year. Perennial is persistent. Perennial is enduring. Perennial is constant. Perennial is perpetual. That s what we need, a perennial Pentecost and we should be down on our knees asking for the perennial Pentecost of the Holy Spirit: Lord, give me more (as Sr. Nancy Kellar would say). Give me more; I know you re not finished with me. You use all people. So, a perennial Pentecost that s what God has for us: a new baptism in the Holy Spirit, a new way of looking at things. A new Ardor, a new Method, a new Expression! The charism of our Community is evangelization and prayer, and the two of them do need to go together. We have to have a relationship with Jesus Christ to be able to evangelize. St. Francis, our patron, taught us this. And the blessing of having new sisters come in is that they have new ardor, new methods and new expressions of how to evangelize, things I would never have dreamed of. And they are just so full of the Lord and they want to do great things for Him. One of the things our sisters love to do is street A PERENNIAL by Sister Lucy Lukasiewicz, DLJC evangelization. We love to do this. We ve gone to Albuquerque, in the old town plaza, and we sing there in the gazebo. We start singing, giving testimony, rapping (we have sisters who rap), and you know what happens? I tell you, the habit we wear is the biggest sign of evangelization. It s like a magnet, and people come. It s amazing. We re always open to evangelization; it s always before us. Wherever you are you can say, Ok God, what are you showing me. How do you want me to evangelize in this situation? Every person who comes into your contact is a child of God waiting to hear the good news, waiting to hear what God has placed on your heart. In Evangelii Nuntiandi, 14 an Apostolic Exhortation that is written to the Episcopate, the Clergy, and to all the faithful of the entire world Paul VI says this: The Church exists to evangelize. Now this is written to the entire world (I guess we are included there, huh?). She exists in order to evangelize, that is to say, to preach, to teach, to be the channel of the gift of grace, to reconcile sinners See Pentecost continued on Page 3

3 Pentecost continued from cover page with God, and to perpetuate Christ s sacrifice in the Mass which is the memorial of his death and glorious resurrection. We can take part in that. In Redemptoris Missio (21-30), John Paul II reminds us that the principal agent is the Holy Spirit. He says that the Holy Spirit, the principal agent, is behind everything we do because we are walking in the Spirit of God, we are baptized in the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is behind everything we do and He s also working in the heart of that person we are about to say something to. So, if you think you re just going to be approaching a person, guess what? The Holy Spirit has already been working. Because the Holy Spirit has brought it to your attention that this person needs to be a) prayed with, b) spoken with, c) consoled, etc. The Holy Spirit has already been working so you don t have to worry, no fears, God is there. John Paul II has also said: Contemplation which does not give birth to mission will eventually wither and mission that does not spring from contemplation is doomed to frustration and failure. We need to have the prayer backing us up. We need to be people of prayer. Evangelization is not an option. It is not a suggestion. It is a command. And the command is Go! That is Jesus mission statement for us: one word, two letters: GO! That s it. Every baptized person has an obligation, and has the right, to share the good news. Every single human being has the right to hear the good news. God has anointed us with the Holy Spirit and has equipped us. You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all of Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8). We belong to Jesus. We re not doing it for our own glory; we re doing it for Jesus in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. A popular worship song says: Savior, you can move the mountains. But Jesus wants us to know that evangelization is not a mountain. It s something very easy, very doable. And I m going to give you four points, something really easy to remember, and this is amazing, it really does work, because a sister shared this with me: Prayer, Care, Share, and Dare. This is what we can do every day: when we wake up and you say: Lord, you prepare me today for evangelization: prayer, care, share, dare. The first one is Prayer. Always pray immediately. I ve got to pray so I know what to say. That s how the Lord will help you. He will remind you of all things and he s going to remind you to pray so you know what to say. Pray in tongues and ask the Holy Spirit what to do and where to go. Have you noticed as you grow more in the Spirit, that sensitivity increases? Be open to that. The next point is Care. In order for us to evangelize we have to care for the person we re evangelizing. We evangelize because we care. God has given each of us hearts to love and care. Pray for a caring heart. John 15:13: No one has greater love than this, to lay down one s life for one s friends. Share. Pray for the graces on how to share. We don t give them good advice; we give them the Good News. We have a lot of good advice that we can give and sometimes when people are sharing with me I sense the Lord is saying, Hold back. Because I want to share something really good. I really do. And the Lord is saying: Hold back and listen to me, and share about the Good News. We are not called to solve their problems but give them to the Problem Solver. Wow! We don t have to solve anybody s problems. You see how easy it is to evangelize? The Holy Spirit s at work we just have to put that step forward and God s going to take care of the rest. It s really easy. Dare. Dare is what you need when you don t want to; not to say, I will pray for you, but May I pray with you? To dare to pray with somebody. You never know what that s going to mean to that person that day and that moment. So that s Prayer, Care, Share, and Dare. It s really easy. You can do it. Now, one thing is, I can see it coming, is excuses, excuses, excuses. There are no excuses! So some of you may say: I am shy; I am introverted; I like to be by myself; frankly, I don t like people. There are no excuses! 2 Timothy 1:7 For the spirit that God has given us does not make us timid, instead his spirit fills us with power, love, and self-control. No excuses! Scripture has an answer to each of our excuses. Romans 8:27 Know in all these things we have complete victory through him who has loved us. For I am certain that nothing can separate us from the love, neither death nor life; neither angels nor other heavenly rulers or powers; neither the present nor the future; nothing can separate us from the love of God. You know, I am a Christian, and I really believe this, I am a Christian because somebody evangelized Poland. I come from a very devout Polish background, my siblings are still devout Catholics and I know it s because of my ancestors, God really honored their faith and that s why I have that faith, and it s because somebody evangelized Poland. And I know the same for you, somebody evangelized you and that s why you re here. God evangelized you! But if your heart is burning within you then give God permission. And if it s not burning within you, still give God permission. And if it s not burning then ask for the fresh fire, extravagant grace. Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta said I am a little pencil in God s hands. He does the thinking. He does the writing. He does everything. And sometimes it is really hard because it is a broken pencil and he has to sharpen it a little more. So, let us be that broken pencil in God s hands and let him do the work. Let s take the first step, open our mouths we have to open our mouths, but let him do the work. Let us be a broken pencil in the hand of God. Amen! Seek a perennial Pentecost! Discover the new A M E: Ardor, Method, Expression. How do we evangelize? Prayer, Care, Share, Dare! Ok, I m confident that I have given you the mission, the same mission Jesus gave: GO! And know you are fully equipped to do all that you need to do. Amen! Alleluia! See Pentecost continued on Page 8
