3 Keynote Address Fr. George Okeahialam, M.S.P. Rev. George Okeahialam, M.S.P. is the Regional Superior for the Missionaries of St. Paul Religious Community. He also serves as pastor of St. Nicholas Catholic Church in the Houston area. A priest of deep faith, Father George has a unique gift of sharing his faith, how it has evolved through his ministry, and how trust in God is so necessary. Our Ongoing Evolving Spiritual and Faith Development Even with the strongest of faiths, there are times of ebb and flow, highs and lows, doubt and certainty. In this way we know our faith is alive! Father George will help us to better understand the ways faith can and will evolve through our relationship and trust in God, our Creator of unending love. Major Addresses Verónica Rayas The Wisdom of our Grandmothers, Celebrating the Traditions and Rituals of our Families Traditionally, rituals such as posadas, blessings, piñatas have been a means of handling on the faith within Hispanic families. This is true of all our cultures. Together we will explore the wisdom of our grandmothers to see how we can pass on these sacred traditions and the catechetical lessons they embody. We will consider how families can develop their own rituals and start new faith traditions in their family. Dr. Verónica Rayas is the director of the Office of Religious Formation for the Diocese of El Paso. Verónica has extensive experience in various ministries as a catechist, youth minister, Catholic school teacher, pastoral associate and author. Jamie Cortez How Do We Celebrate the Body of Christ with Music Jaime will use music including Hispanic compositions to show us how we can celebrate Liturgy with the entire Body of Christ, regardless of the cultural and ethnic makeup of the parish. Jaime Cortez is a pastoral musician, composer, concert artist, clinician and recording artist from Mesa, Arizona. He serves as the music director of Holy Cross Catholic Church. Born in New York and raised in El Salvador, Jaime is fluent in Spanish and has dedicated a portion of his ministry to promoting better Hispanic liturgies and bringing cultures together for worship. Roger Holland Sing to the Lord, Music in Catholic Worship: For the Whole Church Sing to the Lord, Music in Divine Worship is an invaluable tool for those in music ministry, be it choir members, choir directors, accompanists, instrumentalists or cantors. The document offers direction to those preparing the music for liturgy in accordance with current liturgical documents so that what we choose, prepare and sing and play is done in a spirit of stewardship, as music ministers are stewards of God s gift of music, a gift that, when used in Catholic liturgy, is given back to God in worship, thanksgiving, adoration and petition. Roger will show us ways to choose music that is appropriate to the prayer of God s people, that connects them with God s word, and that leads them on their journey toward God. Roger is a graduate of Union Theological Seminary in New York City where he received his Masters of Divinity. He received a Master s Degree in Piano Performance from the Manhattan School of Music, and is a graduate of Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey with a Bachelor s Degree in Music Education. His experience and work in music expands many years and in many areas. 3
4 Workshops: Session A 1A: Praying In, With, and Through Color (Dr. Lorraine DeLuca) Often we approach prayer as something we do through spoken words or thoughts. Although appropriate ways, there are other ways to help us deepen our relationship with God. Come learn how to doodle with color in prayer. 2A: Historical Perspective on Change & Growth in the Church (Rev. Leon Strieder) Don t know much about history? We are a historical people. God chose a people to make his own and from which would come a Savior. The Church was born from the Jewish world of Pentecost, the Greco-Roman world and into our modern time. Come hear how the power of the Kingdom is alive in every epoch, even our own. 3A: God Speaks to Us in His Word, the Sacred Scriptures, session one (Msgr. Jack Dinkins) How does God communicate with me? The many ways that God uses to speak to me tell me about God and about how God looks at me. Want to know more? Come and hear. 4A: Planning Your Catholic Funeral (Rev. Jim McClintock) Even though it may be uncomfortable to talk about it, we are not at home in this world, and planning our Catholic funeral rites offers us an opportunity for a deeply spiritual connection with our Creator. The Church s rites help us prepare for death as a joyful celebration for the deceased and a time of hope for the entire Church in the midst of sadness. 5A: The Sign of Peace: Beyond the Liturgy (Rev. Gus Wall) The Sign of Peace in the Mass has a specific meaning in the celebration in the liturgy and a definite way the sign is to be exchanged. What is that meaning? And how does the Sign of Peace call us to live the message of peace beyond the liturgy, and, in so doing, incarnate the liturgy into our lives and our world? 6A: Singing FUNdamentals for ALL Choirs-Enabling ALL to Sing (Mr. Lee Gwozdz) Ways of enabling all to sing technically will be experienced by session attendees. This is not your usual choir rehearsal--it is FUN damentals. Prepare to be surprised. Workshops: Session B 1B: Active Prayer: Praising God with Your Body (Dr. Lorraine DeLuca) God comes to us through all we experience, but do we respond with all we are? As physical beings we can enter into prayer in a way that engages many aspects of ourselves. Come see how. 2B: Not Just a Bag of Tricks Toys enabling ALL to Sing (Mr. Lee Gwozdz) Explore the use of visual aids, such as toys, to enable children the ability to sing musically achieving the hallmarks of choral music from tone to text. The workshop is a MUST for those who work with young voices and youth choirs. 4
5 Workshops: Session B (cont.) 3B: Mass Basics Brief History and Explanation of the Parish Celebration of the Eucharist (Rev. Jim McClintock) A brief overview of the history and the current celebrations of the Liturgy of the Eucharist in the parish. Things about the Mass you may know, have once known, should know, forgot about, or never knew. 4B: God Speaks to Us in His Word, the Sacred Scriptures, session two (Msgr. Jack Dinkins) The Word of God in our Liturgy, in the Eucharist, in the Sending Forth How can the Word satisfy and fulfill me? Father Jack shares some prayerful insights. 5B: Ministering to the Sick and Homebound (Rev. Leonard Ogbonna) How often we forget about the Body of Christ that is not present at Mass. How do they feel? How can we help to bridge the disconnect between the Sick and the Homebound of the Body of Christ with those present at Mass. Whose responsibility is this? The ministry of presence is selfless and life-giving to both sick and minister. You will be inspired. 6B: The Sign of Peace: Beyond the Liturgy (Rev. Gus Wall) [repeat of session A] Workshops: Session C 1C: Go and Announce the Gospel of the Lord: The Dismissal Rite (Mr. Will Robbins) Are we saying Thanks be to God because we can finally leave or out of true thanksgiving for the miracle we just witnessed? The Dismissal Rite is more than dismissing the congregation, it is our marching orders into the world. Through this discussion, let us each truly go and announce the Gospel of the Lord. 2C: Praying the Scriptures through Handmade Midrash (Dr. Lorraine DeLuca) Midrash is an ancient Jewish practice of developing a commentary on passages of the Hebrew Scriptures. Handmade Midrash is a way for each of us to enter into the scripture and create our own commentary. Want to know how to do this? Come be part of this workshop! 3C: Black Music: A Gift to the Whole Church (Mr. Roger Holland) There is a rich treasure of African-American music, even beyond liturgical music. Roger will tell us of the history of African-American music, Gospel Music, Jazz and how they all relate. What can we use in our Eucharistic liturgy? Where do we use it and how? 4C: Sing to the Lord: Music in Divine Worship Making the Rite Choices (Mr. Lee Gwozdz) This document provides guidelines for understanding the role and ministry of music in the liturgy. How do we PREPARE liturgical music? How do we teach the assembly song? All Choir Directors should attend this workshop because the USCCB document, Sing to the Lord, is basic to our ministry. Come hear more! 5C: Silence... (Msgr. Michael Jamail) God s First Language. 6C: Ministering to the Sick and Homebound (Rev. Leonard Ogbonna) [repeat of session B] 5
