After considerable thought and prayers, Peter Feaman has accepted God s call to serve as ALD for our community. When you see Peter, please give him a warm VDC welcome and your prayers. It sure has been a busy summer for all of us. We are preparing for both Men s and Women s #97 weekends and the team meetings have already started. Men s #97 will be held at St. Paul Lutheran in Boca Raton on September Women s #97 will be held at Faith Lutheran in Palm Beach Gardens on October If you haven t prayed about sponsoring someone, now is the time to ask your fellow church member, family or friends if they have thought about attending a Via de Cristo weekend. Remember if we don t sponsor someone there will be no weekends. Without sharing our experience of what VDC has done in our lives, how can we expect others to enjoy God s love? And now a quick summary of the Annual Gathering of the National Lutheran Secretariat held at our own Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach. I know Magdala will give you a more in-depth report in her article. I might be a little biased on this overview because Gold Coast Via de Cristo definitely has a number of over-achievers! For those of you who missed this experience, you missed out on a tremendous blessing. The worship services and music were unbelievable and the helping hands were over the top, from putting notebooks together to driving golf carts and all those who were chas. GCVDC showed the rest of the Secretariats why we are going strong and have maintained a healthy community. From your Lay Director you all made me feel like a proud dad! Thank you all! 2 Hello Community, We wanted to thank the community for all the help with Women s weekend #96 at First Presbyterian Church in North Palm Beach. It was wonderful to see the extra helping hands and the willing hearts pitch in from the set-up through the closing. We faced a few challenges with the shared activities of the church, but we were grateful that First Presbyterian allowed us to use their church. Thank you staff at First Presbyterian for all your help and your concerns to host us well. We are still looking for any churches that may be available for us to host a weekend. Feel free to contact me at or. Not only are we looking for churches to hold weekends, but we are also looking for pastors to join the VDC movement to help raise up leaders in the church. This process is truly about building relationships with other churches and their pastors. As you pray for Bert Dombrowsky, Rector for Men s #97, and for Marianne Dierker, Rectora for Women s #97, and their teams, please also pray about whom you can sponsor for the weekends. Let s all continue to pray about those people the Lord would want us to disciple, mentor and sponsor. Thanks to those of you who answered the call for needed funds for the repairs and upgrading of our shower trailer. Others in our community gave special gifts for which we are very grateful. We are grateful that as of June 2018, we currently have 13 people who are giving recurring gifts. This helps us greatly with our cash flow between our weekends. I am always blown away by the generosity of this wonderful community of cursillistas. We have been very excited to see that the monthly Give.Church donations have increased. Do not forget that if Via de Cristo changed your life, you can make Gold Coast Via de Cristo one of the charities to which you regularly give. You can easily set up scheduled gifts to occur: one-time, weekly, or monthly. Go on to our website at to find out how to make a donation. We are always looking to improve upon our equipment, vehicles, bedding and all those things that keep the weekends running smoothly, items that are not funded through your team fees and candidate fees. We are currently looking for funds to purchase another laptop and projector for the weekends. This will enhance the worship and help with the write me downs. 3 Glory and praise to our Awesome God for the amazing things He accomplished at the 2018 National Lutheran Secretariat Annual Gathering held at Palm Beach Atlantic University July th! The heavens opened, blessings rained down on us, and the Son was surely reflected! Thanks upon thanks from grateful hearts for everyone from Gold Coast VdC who helped in any way before, after, or at this annual gathering! We could see Jesus shining brightly in each of you! Our deep gratitude and loving thanks to our Gold Coast brothers and sisters who served these last two years on the Host Committee: Jamey & Carol-Ann Beers, Bob & Sharon Brauer, Paul & Janet Cunningham, Rob & Kimberly DeAngelis, Jennifer Kent, Phil Lustig, Dave and Brenda Rankin, Rita Tritt, and Janet Vigilante. Grace, love and community were displayed in abundance! We hope all of us in the Gold Coast VdC community met new brothers and sisters from the 44 other American and Canadian Secretariats at the gathering. It is always so encouraging to develop relationships and share best practices! We are especially grateful for the other five Florida Secretariats who were part of the Host Committee: Indian River, Lighthouse, Sonbeam, Sonshine, and Sonshine North! God is working mightily in our Sonshine State! We were also blessed and delighted to have the 2019 Host Committee from INKY (Indiana and Kentucky) VdC shadowing us at the gathering. They will be hosting the 2019 Annual Gathering in Indianapolis, IN, July th next year! Please keep INKY in your prayers as you have kept us these past months! We have been attending the annual national gatherings since 2004, and we have always been encouraged, renewed and inspired by the worship, talks, workshops and fellowship found there. 4 ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Hebrews 6:19 This hope we have as an anchor for the soul, is both strong and steadfast Someone asked, in fact several people ask me, How was the weekend? I responded with the normal, Great, Wonderful, Very Blessed! Except for the last time, and after thinking about the question, I responded; My weekend was uniquely similar. In my 18 years of being involved with Via de Cristo and serving on weekends, I have seen God bless the weekends over and over again, in such a way as it is almost expected. I mean He ALWAYS shows up! What makes it unique is how He works in the lives of each candidate and team member, individually, specifically meeting each one exactly where they are and providing the exact blessing, breakthrough, and clarity that only that individual needed at that particular time. Uniquely similar. I spent 24 years in the U.S. Coast Guard on ships and boats of all sorts so my weekend verse seemed like a fitting verse for a sailor. I honestly didn t think too deeply about this but as the meetings continued and as the wonderful spiritual directors (from the Table of the Holy Rollers!) dove deeper and deeper into the scripture it became a simple but far reaching meaning. An anchor on a ship is one of the most critical pieces of equipment you have. If you lose your power you can use your anchor to prevent your ship from grounding on a reef and breaking apart on the rocks. If you run onto a sand bar or get stuck, you can put your anchor out towards good water, so when the tide returns, you can bring yourself back to safe water. In short, an anchor can keep you from danger or drifting around at the mercy of the winds and seas. I envision the storms of the world trying to pull me in this direction and that, trying to set my priorities, to change my values, to rely on my own power. I know from miserable failures that relying on my own power is folly. The hope that we have in the Word of God and in Jesus Christ is like an anchor for our lives. It keeps us from drifting aimlessly in the world, without direction and without power. If I rely on the hope of the Word and in Jesus, that is the anchor for my soul, and if I have the faith in Jesus, that is the very chain that connects me to the anchor, I will not drift aimlessly, I will not be crushed by the rocks, I will be safe regarded from the storms that this world throws my way. The evidence of Jesus being the anchor for our soul became clearer and clearer as the weekend progressed. Frankly, for me it was a blur. I know the Holy Spirit saturated the weekend but I just couldn t keep up with the wonders of the work He did. I could only watch as the faces and the countenance of the candidates literally became illuminated. Not that all our planning and preparation didn t count, but I can tell you that God was large and in charge. I really only had control for about the first 10 minutes of the first meeting! I certainly want to thank the team for their flexibility and strength. A special thanks to my Head Cha, Doug Caron, for his constant guidance, support and a wonderful sense of humor and enthusiasm. I wish Bert Dombrowski (Rector), Matt Henshaw (Head Cha) and Jamey Beers (Head Server) tons of blessings on Men s # 97 and thank them for their support on #96. And finally, the folks at the Secretariat. Everyone I spoke to, asked constant questions of, asked for help and guidance (I need a bit more than most), went above and beyond the call, always supportive and always encouraging. 5 ...*...*...*... Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, * When I was called to be Rectora I was in shock. I am happy serving on a team or just * working behind the scenes but never in a leadership role. This was not in my plan, but I know that God's plan is always better than mine. I was humbled and blessed over the whole process. God helped me pick a wonderful sweet Spirit filled team and blessed me with a fabulous Head Cha JoAnn Hayes and Rollo Room Cha Rhonda Danielson. Each team member was a blessing to the candidates and to me. The Holy Spirit showed up all weekend and showered us with blessings. The dining room was filled with love and laughter by Patty Castiglione and Suzie Brudzinski and the wonderful community who served us. Many thanks to our Spiritual Directors who shared their stories, hearts, and wisdom with us and made us laugh and cry at the same time. I am so thankful to be involved with this Via de Cristo movement and to have served as Rectora on Women's 96#, and I look forward to serving in the future. * * * Your Sister in Christ, Pat Cherry, Rectora, #96 * ******************************************************************************** * Hello Cursillista Community, I hope this letter finds you in good health and actively pursuing your Piety, Study and Action on a daily basis. Your VDC weekend was a gift to you from your sponsor who invited you to attend a weekend so that you would experience God in a very real and possibly different way than that to which you were accustomed. One of the things I look forward to most each week is our Reunion Group. This is covered on Sunday with the Rector/Rectora s talk and is the tool which allows us to put into action the topics of grace and faith presented and discussed at our tables throughout the weekend. Reunion grouping is essential in keeping our walk with Jesus active and invigorating; it takes us beyond the hum drum activities and less important parts of our days and reminds us of that which matters most. As Stephen Covey wrote in his book The Seven * Habits of Highly Effective People, it allows us to Put First Things First. Reunion --- allows * us to step aside from the world that demands so much of our time and allows us to refocus our priorities from world/work centered to God centered activities. Reunion allows us to hear the voices of our brothers and sisters in Christ sharing what and how God is impacting lives throughout the week. If you have not been participating in a Reunion Group lately or since you made your weekend, connect with your sponsor; it is a sponsor s responsibility to get you into a reunion group. You may also contact the Gold Coast Via De Cristo Secretariat which keeps a list of people searching for reunion groups in the Palm Beach, Broward and Treasure Coast areas.
