3 C H U R C H C O U N C I L N O V E M B E R H I G H L I G H T S P A S T O R J O N A T H A N S L E T T E R Calvary Church Council Minutes November 23, 2015 Led by Pastor Jonathan, Council reflected on the vows spoken during the covenant of Baptism and its implications both on a personal and congregational level. Discussion concluded with David s prayer from 1 Chronicles 29 and the P.L.E.A. booklet prayer of the day. October Council minutes were reviewed and accepted. Review the October financial reports. This October s Offering Revenue was the best recorded October. With continued strong giving this will result in sufficient revenues to fully fund the spending plan for the current year. October operating revenue exceeded operating expenditures which included cyclical expenses for Youth and Children s Ministry fall start-up programs, Associate Pastor final severance compensation, and previously scheduled staff increases. Transfers from the Facility Development Fund have now fully funded Property & Equipment and Facility Development Consulting Expenditures. Thrivent Investment and Mission Investment Fund losses reflect the market loss in October, but are currently showing recovery. Average weekly attendance and giving was up over the previous months and 6 year averages Goals and Priorities Clarkston Facility Development Plan Adjacent Property: not available at the present time. Design Ideas & Progress Update: sharing with congregation as part of Together Arise Shine 2015 Capital Appeal Leadership meets with Jeff Kjellberg on Monday, December 7 to review the next steps and follow up. Town Hall meeting will be scheduled for January 2016 Council reviewed the Pledge Analysis Report for the Capital Appeal, including number of pledges to date and total pledge impact on the proposed building budget. Council reviewed and discussed the New Mortgage Scenario Report from Mission Investment Funds prepared by Chris Peterson. Other Council Business Pastor Jonathan announced that there have been 2 requests for Council Applications, however, they have not yet been submitted. Jennifer Angus (Office Administration) and Carl Bloom (Licensed Lay Minister-Mission & Outreach) will be installed in their new staff positions on Sunday, Dec. 6. Bishop Donald Kreiss has been in discussion with Pastor Jonathan regarding a Pastoral Internship from the Distributive Learning Center in the future. We may have an opportunity to host another intern pastor this year. White Lake & Pontiac Vision and Development Pastor Jonathan reported on conversations taking place for new potential mission development opportunities for White Lake GIFT Weekend GIFT Weekend will be a part of the Lent in The Real Work of Christmas Christmas has come and gone so quickly again this year and now it is already the New Year. All of the preparation and anticipation. What a great celebration we had at Calvary - so many people to share the story of Jesus' birth with - God is good!! Now as the dust begins to settle again I am reminded that the Christmas season lasts 12 full days (until Epiphany on January 6), and I am so glad. It means, that if we don't move on too quickly, we can still take some time to savor it and make sure we don't miss the real message of Christmas - God is love - and at Christmas love comes down to us in the baby Jesus! One thing I dislike doing most after Christmas is putting the manger scene away especially packing the baby Jesus into a cold, dark box. Somehow it just doesn t seem right. So a number of years ago we began a family tradition of leaving the baby Jesus out all year instead of packing him away. Then we move him around the house throughout the year. It's fun because we never know where he will turn up, but even more important it's a reminder to us that Immanuel ("God with us") is there each and every day, of each and every year, no matter where we are, what we re doing or what is happening in our lives. In this very tangible way the Good News of Christmas is present with us all year. As these 12 Days of Christmas wind down I am reminded again this year of one my favorite poems by theologian and spiritual writer Howard Thurman called The Work of Christmas. May these words, and the Good News that God is with us and for us no matter what, guide us as we TOGETHER ARISE SHINE in 2016 and may this new year be the highest impact year yet for God s mission through Calvary in Clarkston, White Lake, Pontiac, and far beyond. "When the song of the angels is stilled, when the star in the sky is gone, when the kings and princes are home, when the shepherds are back with the flocks, then the work of Christmas begins: to find the lost, to heal those broken in spirit, to feed the hungry, to release the oppressed, to rebuild the nations, to bring peace among all peoples, to make a little music with the heart And to radiate the Light of Christ, every day, in every way, in all that we do and in all that we say. Pastor Jonathan shared this announcement at worship December 13, 2016 I have a couple of really good news stories to share with you this morning regarding our TOGETHER ARISE SHINE appeal for mission and facility expansion and enhancement of our Clarkston Campus. Perhaps like me, you have been wondering how conducting such a significant capital appeal would affect offering plate giving to our general operating fund. Well, I want to tell you that our regular giving over these past few months has been stronger than ever. Our Kairos consultant Jeff Kjellberg was with us this past week and reminded us that this is a sign that we are very healthy as a congregation and that the vision we have for TOGETHER ARISE SHINE is the right one that 3
4 P A S T O R J O N A T H A N S L E T T E R God is calling us to. It has moved us to not only support this appeal, but to continue supporting our overall ministry and mission, because that, of course, is what this is all about. So, thank you for continuing to demonstrate strong financial giving for our ongoing ministries through our General Operating Fund and helping us to end the year very healthy financially. The second REALLY Good News Story is regarding our TOGETHER ARISE SHINE response. As of December 13, we had 125 responses, totaling over $835,000!!! (we applaud & cheer & celebrate this great news!). With this very strong early response we are already in a very favorable position to move forward with this vision and construction in the coming year. Our leaders will be providing all of the specific information to you in town hall meetings early next year in preparation for our Annual Congregational Meeting. So we are good to go forward! There is a part 2 of this great news. We still have a number of our members and friends who have not yet indicated their response in support of this vision. On top of that, we discovered this past week that some members & leaders of our congregation have stepped forward with additional dollars to create a matching fund. So for every new commitment, or one time gift, going forward from today, will be matched up to $63,500 (NOTE: this is more than the $50,000 I announced as more matching fund gifts have since come in). What a fantastic opportunity for us and at this point we are really hoping to surpass the $1,000,000 mark. That would be really exciting to do "better together" and would put us in an even stronger position to make this dream a reality. 4 So, I want to encourage all of you to consider stepping in with either a one-time gift to help us exceed the $1 million mark, or make an initial 3-year commitment to help us continue to raise as much as possible towards our $3 million vision. And, every new dollar committed or given will be matched up to $63,500. Our hope is to get us past that $1 million mark before the end of the year. (NOTE: as of Christmas, we are already over $925,000 given or committed - an increase of over $90,000 since I first shared this announcement last month - so we are closing in on that $1 million mark - THANK YOU!!!). As we prepare to enter this new year together, may our appeal theme Bible verse guide us in all that we do: Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you. Isaiah 60:1 Again, thank you for your commitment and regular giving to Calvary's ongoing ministries, and for such an amazing start for TOGETHER ARISE SHINE. We are blessed to be a blessing, and I believe this vision will bless our ministry beyond imagination." Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen. Ephesians 3:20-21 TO LEARN MORE OR TO GIVE - Please see the display in the Clarkston Welcome Center for more information and to pick up a response form. Hope Courage Joy and Love were the weekly Advent lessons that our youth in grades 8-12 focused on. We took a look at the Christmas Story through the lives of Mary and Joseph to see if we were in their shoes, how would we have done what they did? Would our faith be strong enough to do what they did? Great discussions arose about situations in our lives that require hope, courage, joy & love as well as being ready to hear and do what God calls us to do. Luke 1:38 I am the Lord s servant, Mary answered. May your word to me be fulfilled. Thank you to everyone that donated gifts for the Giving Tree. Families at Lighthouse, and children in foster care with LSSM will be blessed by your generosity. The youth were asked to buy a gift for someone their age that they would like in order to realize that the kids receiving the gifts are like them, but need extra love at this time in their lives. There are many faith lessons that come into focus this time of year. It s always a blessing to listen to the youth and witness the ways they are extending God s love to others. Often, they teach us more than we teach them. We re better together. Merry Christmas to all of Calvary s youth leaders and youth families. Looking back on Youth Ministry in 2015 sure brings many smiles. I can t wait to see what God will do through this incredible ministry in Whatever it is, we will be ready to serve with hope, courage, joy and love! ~Susan Batchik, Youth Ministry Coordinator Visit calvaryinfo.org/youth and join generationcalvary on Facebook to stay connected 13

7 F A I T H C O M M U N I T Y N U R S I N G 10 The Pages of Our Lives Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders, and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross Therefore strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees. Make level paths for your feet, so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed. Hebrews 12: 1-3, With every sunrise, we are presented a fresh, blank page in our life s journal. The Lord is the God of new beginnings, and he gives us the freedom to fill each page with whatever we choose. But sometimes, because of the demands of daily life and the rapid pace of the culture around us, we may not even skim over our journal entries at the end of the day, or week, or year. If we could review the pages of our lives up to this point, would we be pleased? Is God pleased? Would we call this abundant living? If we only scribble and scurry through the years given to us, how sad a thing it will be after the last page is written. When we and God look back over the scrawled pages that led up to the last one, suppose they are filled with the ink of nonsense? Suppose all the pages are blurred and have no meaning page after page of a life filled with hum-drum existence and purposeless living. Without goals, we drift aimlessly as passive spectators (or victims) in life, and we can be easily manipulated into conformity with the dying culture of the world around us. Instead, let s allow God to lead us, inspire us, to push and prod us to leave behind pages that are branded with words, deeds, and prayers that influence lives for his kingdom. The Apostle Paul exclaimed, Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me (Phil. 3: ) Paul was a man who knew where he was going, and like a distance runner athlete, he ran straight for the finish line. In the process, God used him to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ throughout the Roman Empire and to transform Christianity from a small Jewish sect into what the Nicene Creed calls the one holy catholic and apostolic church. God can forgive the wasted past pages of our lives and help us to savor the unblemished days ahead, but we will need to slow down and focus single-mindedly on him. We will need to say NO to some of the time wasters that eat up our schedules, so that we can say YES to balancing work/ rest/ play/ worship/ and learning in God pleasing ways. As our minds are changed and we develop a clear sense of what God wants us to do and be, the Holy Spirit can transform us into more usable vessels for his kingdom purposes. (Adapted from GOD S ABUNDANCE: 365 DAYS TO A SIMPLER LIFE) This is the beginning of a new day. God has given me this day to use as I will. I can waste it or grow in its light and be of service to others. But what I do with this day is important, because I exchanged a day of my life for it. I hope I will not regret the price I paid. When tomorrow comes, today will be gone forever. In its place will be something I have left behind. Let it be something good.
