Being The Church When we go through life there are lots of things we want to be. Our Redeemer Lutheran Church Transforming Lives and Building Community by Loving God and Serving Others The Monthly Newsletter of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church November 2015 See inside for: Thanksgiving Worship 5th Sunday Worship Operation Christmas Child Advent Study Past Intern Updates Project Home As kids grow up they get asked often what do you want to be? - fireman? teacher? dancer? Pastor? (OK not many people ask that). When these kids get to high school and college that same question of 'what do you want to be?' takes on more serious implications for shaping the courses they take and the experiences they seek out, in order to better understand their hopes and gifts for a possible career. But we don't seem to ask that question of 'what do you what to be?' when people get older. It is like there is no longer a sense of exploration or forming or dreaming that we think is possible or helpful. So maybe it is time to revive that question and help us still wonder or aim or plan for what we want to be. How might you answer that question as an individual? What new directions might that pull you? How might a response to that question help you to live more intentionally in these days? How might that stir some ideas or avenues for what you will do with your life? What do you want to be? But this is not just a question to ask of ourselves. This is also a good question that we want to help ask as a church. What do we want to be? We ask this as a church because we need to continue to grow and develop our ministry and try living and serving in ways that make us faithful to God and valuable to our neighbors. We ask this of ourselves to make sure we are being vital and vibrant. This is a question that we will keep asking ourselves as we are renewing the life and work of Our Redeemer. This fall as we walk into our stewardship season we will look back and celebrate how we are being the church - how we are being a community of faith where God is stirring, that God is using. And I think you will be pleased and impressed with much of how we answer that question and calling. In early November we will send you a stewardship letter that will celebrate and tell more stories about how we are being the church. We will have video to show you on November 15 and 22 about ways that we are being a vital church and tending well and wide to good marks of being the church. And then we will collect our financial commitments for 2016 that will help us continue to be an effective church. We will hope this fall will help stir you to continue or grow into strong sacrificial financial giving to help us be the church that we and God want us to be. We want to be alive. We want to be praising. We want to be growing. We want to be learning. We want to be Transforming Lives. We want to be Building Community. We want to be Loving God. We want to be Serving Others. We want to be the best congregation we can be. And one of the main ways to help us be the church is through our strong stewardship. Please help us continue to be a fine church in Pastor Karsten Nelson

2 No perfect people allowed On the outside of a church in Eagan a congregation has permanently placed letters on the outside of their building that say no perfect people allowed. It was shocking to me even as a pastor in-training to read such words and to ponder what it could mean for the life of that community and church. Just about every church I have served in, and visited, has considered themselves a welcoming church. However, as times change congregations struggle more often than not to extend themselves beyond their church doors to a mission field that is just beyond their parking lot. I wonder, what would it mean for us as church to not strive to be welcoming, but rather INVITING? Inviting encourages us to authentically recognize who we are and who our neighbor is. Inviting challenges us to get to know our neighbors and talk about our faith together. Inviting says, come join me as we walk this life together. For we are each imperfect people united by a perfect God who loves us just as we are. Psalm 139 reminds us that we are wonderfully made. Yet, wonderfully made does not imply we are to have it all together. So the next time you hear someone suggest that they aren t good enough for church, or they have made too many mistakes in their life invite them to come to this place where a group of imperfect people come to worship, serve and love in Jesus name. Heck, even the Intern Pastor makes a couple mistakes in worship now and then! Thanksgiving Worship Our Redeemer is host this year to the Ecumenical Worship on Wednesday night November 25 th with five other congregations (Progressive Baptist, St Pascal s Catholic, and Grace, Hope, and Good Samaritan Lutheran congregations). Come for a beautiful worship service at 7:00pm and stay for good fellowship with members from all these churches. We will ask people from here to bring desserts to share so please bake or buy something to share. 5 th Sunday in November Join us on 11/29 for our normal 5 th Sunday worship at 10:00am as we celebrate a joint service with the congregations who share space here Spring of Eternal Life (Manantial de Vida Eterna) a Hispanic Nazarene church and Savior, a Hmong Alliance church. On this Sunday Pastor Karsten will be preaching and the Our Redeemer musicians will be leading a group of musicians from all three congregations as we worship together. Come join us for a great day of worship and stay for the chance to get to know these neighbors as we enjoy a pot luck meal following worship. The worship will be wonderful. The food will be fantastic. The connections will create a new communion. See you in worship! Anne Jackson Intern Pastor Thank you ORLC for your generous support of Frost Lake Elementary children! Thanks to your donations 9 backpacks and loads of warm winter clothing were distributed to neighborhood children in need. In the words of Principal Stacey Kadrmas, We really appreciate the partnership! Kitchen news The Kitchen has now begun its transformation into a nicer and newer kitchen that can better help us to serve the congregation and the wider community. The work ahead during November and December will result in new floors, the addition of space for washing dishes, new shelf storage, better equipment (stove, dishwasher, coffee maker), new heat and AC for the Fellowship Hall and Kitchen, and overall a more commercial grade kitchen. During this time the kitchen will not be available at all. But we will have access in the youth space to the fridge, microwave, coffee makers and other items so that our regular Sunday morning drinks and donuts will be served, and other gatherings can have access to paper and plastic products. Thanks in advance for the patience and adjustments this will require of us in the next two months. Thanks too for your gifts to the Mission Appeal that is allowing us to tend well to the facility upgrades that this church has been needing for a long time.

3 OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD SHOEBOXES Baker's Wanted! Please bake 1 dozen (or 10 dozen!) cookies for the annual Cookie Shop fundraiser, benefitting Children's Ministry Program! Drop off cookies any time on Friday, Dec. 4th until 7pm October 25 is the start of our collection of shoeboxes filled with small gifts for children around the world. Please consider filling 1, 4, 5 or as many you are able. Include one 'wow' toy and as many smaller gifts, school supplies, or personal hygiene items as you are able. Cardboard or plastic shoeboxes can be used. Wrap the top and bottom of boxes separately as they need to be opened at the warehouse before shipping overseas. Look for a list of gift ideas at the table in the Narthex and get labels for your boxes. This can be a fun event to do as a single, group or family. It gives children a chance to help others less fortunate. The last day to bring the boxes in is Nov 15. We will be delivering them to the collection center the following day. Thank you to all who participate. Cookie Shop Sale! Saturday, December 5th 8:30am to noon or til they're gone! $5/dozen We could use volunteers to both help set-up and plate the cookies on Friday evening as well as help us with the sale on Saturday morning. If you would like to help, please let Lisa or any member of the Children's ministry team know. Join us for this years Children's Christmas Program - "No Time for Christmas" Sunday, December 6th at 10:00am There will be light refreshments in the Fellowship hall following the program. Dress rehearsal will be on Saturday, December 5th from 1:00-3:00pm. Hello! The month of November has some great things coming for the youth program! As we continue to push forward into the heart of the confirmation year, we are continuing to learn more and more about the New Testament and its importance to our faith life! For more confirmation news, we will not be having confirmation the week of Thanksgiving. We also are beginning initial plans for next summer and focusing on how the youth can best serve this coming summer as well as have a summer to remember. Also, we will not be doing the Pie Fundraiser this November due to the kitchen renovation and not having space to bake the pies as a group. In the month of November, the 6 th -12 th graders will be having a Youth Group night at Pinz on Friday, November 13 th at 7 pm until 10:30. This event will be looking for a couple of chaperones to drive as well as come along and have a great time with us! We will be playing laser tag, bowling and doing all of the other arcade things that Pinz has to offer! Blessings! Eric Klein, Director of Youth Ministries

4 Finding Bethlehem in the Midst of Bedlam Advent Study Doulos Mission Trip There is an intergenerational Mission Trip opportunity coming up this March to join a group headed to Doulos school in the Dominican Republic for a week of work, building relationships, understanding a different culture, appreciating the deep faith foundations, and engaging in enjoy service and reflection with the group. This trip will be from March 12-19, 2016 and will be limited to the first 16 people. A full information packet is still being finalized but for more information or to indicate interest to come along please speak to Pastor Karsten. Cost will be in the range of $1,400 per person and will include all transportation, housing and food while we are there. There will be work with the school, out in the community and with a local water filtration program. Come use your gifts, gain exposure to a beautiful and needy culture, and see how God can use this for your good. Christmas season can be chaotic, confusing, and bedlam! Sound familiar? Join us this Advent season as we look at the truth Christmas always happens right in the midst of our confusion and chaos. God breaks in and is made known in Jesus Christ. Christmas and confusion were intimately related even at the first Christmas when Jesus was born. Remember the bedlam in Bethlehem that night? Sometimes we forget that. But, that s what this study is about how Christ breaks into our chaotic lives and brings Christmas how Bethlehem always happens in the midst of bedlam. God meets us where we are. Please take time this Advent season and join us for this 5-session study as we look at Finding Bethlehem in the Midst of Bedlam. Sunday mornings between services or Wednesday evenings after service beginning the week of November 22 nd. Sign-up for this study will be on Sundays, November 8 th and 15 th in the Narthex. New Members (Date Change) We always welcome folks into the worship life of Our Redeemer and into the ministry of this place, but we have regular membership classes to formally welcome and draw in others who want to make this their church home. The next New Member class will take place on Sunday, December 6 from 12:15-2:15. We will gather for a meal and chance to hear each other s stories. Then we will share more about the life and work of Our Redeemer, talk about the foundations and hopes of this place, and visit about how and where you can fit into this faithful community of follower of Jesus. For more information or to sign up so we have materials contact Lisa Diez in the office or Pastor Karsten. Gift Card Sales Starting to think about Christmas? Simplify your shopping with gift cards! Stop by the gift card table on the 1 st, 3 rd, and 5 th Sundays of each month. If you can t find what you want among the cards that we already have on hand, choose from a list of hundreds of retailers available for special orders. Remember that the Bucks for Our Building program receives a percentage of the card value for each card that you buy. The more you buy, the more we earn!

5 Our Redeemer has been blessed with having seven intern pastors (Anne makes 8) serve our congregation. We have been a part in sending them on to become pastors. For the next few months, we will highlight some of our past intern pastors, and we will hear from them where they are in ministry. Last month you heard from Pastor Janel Kuester and Pastor Chris Johnson. This month we hear from our third intern, Pastor Nile Sandeen, and our fourth intern, Pastor Tricia Mattson My Dear ORLCers! I am pleased to report that things are well in western Wisconsin. I still reside (quite happily) in my first call where I serve two small (predominantly Norwegian) churches: Mt Sterling Lutheran and Utica Lutheran Church, and fear not, they picked up right where you left off in taking good care of me. Nicole is a substitute teacher for area schools and substitute organist for area churches. She also is a part-time secretary for some nearby Catholic and Lutheran churches. And she is accompanying the school musical this year (Fiddler on the Roof). We just welcomed to the world our first nephew this last summer. The area we live in still captivates us regularly with the wonder of God s creation, and now with fall comes the tourist season because of the apple orchards. In short, things are busy but good. And we certainly miss you. Grace and Peace from the One who holds us though many, though far together in one body, Jesus Christ. Nile & Nicole Sandeen th St Ferryville, WI (608) Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Hello from the Hinterlands of Northwestern Minnesota! I think of you all often, especially since your gift of the signed photo of the congregation hangs above my office desk at home. How grateful I am that you allowed me to be your intern pastor in preparation for my calling to be the pastor of Faith Lutheran Church in Bagley, MN! I have just completed my second year here in Bagley and I love being a pastor! Among what I enjoy most is studying the Word of God with parishioners, visiting parishioners, and leading worship at our local elder care facilities. Over the summer Rhianna, the nine-year old daughter of our church secretary, began attending our adult bible study and serving as my assisting minister when I lead worship at our elder care facilities. She has begun talking about becoming a pastor herself one day. Truly the Word of God bears fruit in the world! The home I purchased in November overlooks a beautiful valley of farm land. The updating of my home has been keeping me busy, as I ve redone my cabinets and now I am repainting nearly all the walls. My address is th Avenue, Bagley, MN and my is pastortriciamattson@gmail.com. With love from your Sister in Christ, Pr. Tricia Mattson

6 Second Harvest Grocery Packing Line Everyone is welcome to the upcoming events sponsored by OWLS (Older Wiser Lutherans) Sign up at church at the info booth, tell me in person, or call me ( ) to help the crew pack out at the grocery line on Tuesday November 17th from 5:30 pm to 7:30pm. Please arrive about 10 minutes early. Sign Up deadline is November 8th. We are an all ORLC crew so there are 20 slots to fill so sign up early to secure your place! If you haven t joined us before, it s a fun activity that really helps others. We take bulk food from cases and each person on the conveyor line adds their food item into a box that gets distributed. We then label and seal the case and load it on the pallet. This is at the 2 nd Harvest Heartland location in Maplewood on 1140 Gervias Ave. Our past crews have really made a difference! In September we packed 14 pallets of food boxes! We had so much fun, laughter and got a little work out too. We even had opportunities to share our faith and invite others to ORLC. It's been asked many times, "When did we start packing at Second Harvest?". Thanks to some great data logging of Pastor Karsten and Dianne Derks here is the information. We started in September of 2012 and have met about 4 to 6 times per year. Our teams have packed 230+ pallets of meal boxes. Here's the most amazing number; that equates to over 244,199 meals we have made possible to distribute! Join our team in helping fight hunger in our community!!!! Friends are always welcome join us or work side by side with your family. Just make sure their names is on the list. Children 11 or older (contact me if interested if younger) are welcome with a parent or an adult who will be responsible for them. It is great to see multiple generations working together. Come serve and join the fun! Pencil in on your calendar our future dates too: (same time - same place) Thursday, November 12 Minnesota Public Radio Tour with lunch at Hoa Bien Vietnamese Restaurant. Lunch will 11:30 at the Hoa Bien Vietnamese Restaurant on Lexington and University Avenue. After lunch, we ll take the Green Line to downtown St. Paul for our 1:00 pm tour of the Minnesota Public Radio facilities. The tour is free; lunch is on your own. Although there are some benches available, you will be walking and standing throughout the tour. Carpool from church. Sunday, December 13 Black Nativity, A Tradition of Love and Light at the Penumbra Theatre on Kent Street in St. Paul Join us for this musical concert with a focus on compassion, connection, and community. The performance is at 4 pm; ticket cost is $32 for adults. Carpool from church. Thank you to all the people who blessed the pastors during Pastor Appreciation Month. Below is a picture of some of the ladies who took Pastor Karsten and Intern Pastor Anne to lunch. Thanks again! January 21, 2016, March 3, 2016, May 5, 2016,

7 The following is a letter from Lyda Robb of Interfaith Action who worked with Hmong American Partnership about our vegetable gardens to help us see the bigger picture of what we are doing. Dear Farm-Faith Project Leadership, Thank you all for another season of gardening. I am grateful for all of the work that each one of you put in to help make meaningful impact. Collectively, 58 gardeners were able to garden at our five congregations. For our gardeners, this opportunity has provided families with healthy food, a place to garden, and a feeling of belonging through better knowing one another. Together, participants gardened 6212 sq feet, which at half a pound of food per square foot, is 3,106 pounds of food. I m sure that the gardens were much more productive than that, as I m sure you observed. Gardeners this year were recent immigrants and refugees who spoke Bhutanese, Karen, Burmese, Hmong, Sudanese, and Nepali. Gardeners participated in workshops to learn skills that will allow them to grow on a larger scale and make a profit through farming. Workshops included topics from farm loans and micro lending to budgeting to make selling vegetables profitable. Lyda Robb - Farm-Faith Coordinator Our Redeemer gains a top honors award from the Ramsey - Washington Metro Watershed District. The rain garden in our East parking lot is a beautiful garden of lush plants and flowers that functions both as a collection site for the runoff water on that parking lot and a place that birds and bees and butterflies are swarming to. This garden, which was an Eagle Scout project of Mitchell Morgan is now cared for by Dennis Paulson. We are being honored as this garden is a good land management practice that improves water quality and natural resources for our community. Eastside Congregations are in conversation The ELCA churches that are housed to the NE of downtown St Paul are having organized conversations about how we can work together to strengthen both our individual ministries and our kingdom work in this area. This is one of the ways the St Paul Synod office is working with us to help us dream and discern ways that God can use us working together and how we sense God calling us to new and renewed ministry. Instead of only functioning as isolated congregations we are trying to see how we can be better together in various ways from shared ministry to coordinated services to local marketing. Project Home to be here during November As the weather turns cold it is always nice to have a place to be warm and call home. We are partnering with Project Home (of Interfaith Action of Greater St. Paul) to provide overnight space for some families. Our Redeemer is opening up our doors to host 5-6 homeless families during the month of November. This is a chance for us to be good stewards of our space when this ministry had a great need. It also provides another way for us to serve the community (part of our call as Christians and mission of our church) and provide us a chance to better understand and help address issues of homelessness in Ramsey County. Project Home partners with many congregations throughout the St Paul area to provide evening housing for families that do not have a place to stay. Project Home provides the necessary beds, linens, food and craft materials. These families stay in a different congregation for a month at a time while being part of a structured day program which meets in St. Paul that seeks longer term housing options for these families. This program works with about 40 people at a time and houses them in two different congregations each month. Our Redeemer will host group #2 during November in our Sunday school wing. Right now that group includes 5 families with children ages 11 months to 17 years old who will be with us. Our evening volunteers will offer hospitality by greeting the families when they arrive by bus about 6:00pm and helping them get a snack before hanging out with games, school work and visiting. The overnight staff will help families get settled in their rooms, wake them up in the morning and set out a simple breakfast before a bus gets them at 6:30am, and then tend to any clean up that is necessary. If you are interested in helping, sign up by calling the office at or going online to signup genius at -project
