Upon graduation, Lauren signed a record deal with Warner Bros. Records. After years of radio singles, cross-country touring, music placements in TV and films, and a Tony award nomination, a unique music teambuilding event led Lauren into the corporate world. In 2014, Lauren joined Dale Carnegie Training of Tennessee as a performance consultant and certified Dale Carnegie trainer. She worked primarily with healthcare and finance companies in Middle Tennessee helping them to increase employee engagement, improve performance for succession planning, and generate revenue. Her work ethic and passion for people contributed to her earning a Rookie Award two years in a row and being ranked the 11th Rookie in the world in sales with the global Dale Carnegie organization. Lauren has maintained her instructor certification and continues to lead groups from time to time. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2 WELCOME New Members! 3 Twas the Night Before Christmas Woodmont Style by Clay Stauffer Twas the Night Before Christmas, and under the Steeple Woodmont was busy, and bustling with people Thom had grown older, to the beach he d retire Forty years in Music City were about to expire Bethlehem was finished, it was another success Sam was elated, they d picked up the mess Cliff worked real hard, cleaning all day But if it involves the baptistery, he must stay away Roy s computer didn t work, and he didn t know why Plug the power cord in, you might be surprised Farrell was busy, with six kids at the mall But she kept writing books, surprising us all Rich begged the deacons to come pass the plate Some just can t help it, they re perpetually late David Conrad kept asking, how long am I chair? With the stress of this job, I m losing my hair Parking was tough, too many cars in the lot Our church needs valet, for we can t find a spot Donovan was back, but only part time Between teaching and church, he s losing his mind New babies kept coming, the nursery s too small A good problem to have, but Lord help us all Trump led the country, and Haslam the state, Megan Barry was ready to raise your tax rate Trump kept on tweeting, the guy s got some nerve His words make him sound like he s been overserved Tax cuts are coming, don t have any fear We ll figure out how to pay for them sometime next year Nashville kept growing, with skinny houses and such But no one could afford them, they cost way too much Bull dozers, cranes, and cement trucks all over Seems everybody in this town has a brand new Range Rover In the midst of it all stood that pretty white steeple Reminding the world to love all God s people Rich and poor, young and old, you matter to us And if you need a ride, well, Joe drives the bus The music was awesome, singing carols of old, Jesus birth in a manger, the prophets foretold. Christmas Eve would arrive, five services to choose, Why not come twice, you ve got nothing to lose. The angel tree gifts had spread Christmas cheer, Mary Lynn, please calm down, at least til next year, Chris Beck was stressed out, the budget seemed tight, More guilt from the pulpit just might be alright, There is nothing like Advent at Woodmont each year, It s the best way we know, to spread Christmas cheer, Faith, Hope, and Love is what makes it feel right So Merry Christmas to all, and to all goodnight! Bredesen announced his decision to run Isn t he like 90? This should be fun Roy Moore lost the Senate, he s such a loose cannon But that s what you get when you listen to Bannon Woodmont feeds Nashville s homeless community Sunday, December 17, 2017 Room In The Inn, downtown Nashville pg 3

5 How Did We Get Here From There?( ) by Thom Schuyler Seven Presidents, infinite scandals, stock market crashes, the Internet and , a housing bubble, the rise of terrorism, 9/11, a never-ending war, long lines at the airport, rap music, a broader definition of marriage, the disappearance of civility, the 24/7 news cycle and a deeply-divided country. The astonishing growth of Nashville, the ever-maddening congestion throughout the city, a thousand-year flood, the devastation of the music industry, the arrival of The Predators and The Titans and the new vistas on the skyline. Five Senior Ministers, four Interims, multiple Associate Pastors, administrative staff, custodians, deacons, elders, committees and Board Chairs. An ever-growing campus with new classrooms, a gym, a Gathering Hall, a youth wing, a boardroom, a renovated pre-school, an overhauled kitchen and an outdoor chapel. A rollercoaster budget, an up-and-down-and-up-again membership, the remarkable growth of Walk Thru Bethlehem, the embrace of Room In the Inn, Unbound, Morgan-Scott, Angel Tree and The Nashville Food Project. When our oldest son, Roy turned 16 we got him an old pickup truck. We soon learned that he was a bit directionally-challenged, not an unusual circumstance for teenage boys. What we didn t realize is that the only way he could find his way to school or Kroger or the movie theater or friends houses was to start from Woodmont Christian Church. From that perspective everything made sense to Roy. If the truth be known this is the case for everyone in the Schuyler clan: Woodmont has made (just about) everything make sense. xo - Thom Schuyler I thank my God upon every remembrance of you - Philippians 1:3 Reunion Youth Choir performing Take a Little With You, Sunday, December 17, 2017 Thank you! 6 The Advent Devil by Roy Stauffer Several years ago (7 to be exact) I briefly mentioned in a Christmas column the Advent Devil. It s a German idea and they call it the Advent Teufel. The Advent Devil tries to keep people so busy in secular activities during December that they lose sight of the real meaning of Christmas. He doesn t want people to have time to experience the rebirth of Christ in their souls. And the temptations of this Advent Devil are so diabolically clever. Since we are down to the last week before Christmas, and the stresses of getting it all done, I thought we needed another reminder of the Advent Devil. He wants you to be so busy and so stressed that you have no time to anticipate and feel the awe and wonder of the Christmas miracle. He wants this last week to fly by without anything happening to you on the inside. The Advent Devil s goal is to keep you so busy that you forego such things as daily prayer and quiet time, Scripture study, and Church worship opportunities. The Advent Devil thinks he is gloriously successful if he can: put you in a bad mood before the annual Sunday School Christmas party, make you think you don t have time to attend the choir s Christmas concert, and too worn out to attend a Christmas Eve worship service. The Advent Devil will do everything he possibly can to make you grumpy rather than glad, and stressed rather than blessed. He will try to make you irritable and touchy when you re trying to do your Christmas shopping, or are caught in holiday traffic jams. He want to close your ears (and heart) so you won t hear the beautiful sound of Christmas carols which are everywhere not to mention the sound of angels voices. The Advent Devil will make you feel like you re in a December pressure cooker, having to rush, rush, rush, and worry, worry, worry about getting it all done. He will turn the joy of this season into frantic and frenzy. When you re shopping for the right gift to give to friends and relatives, the Advent Devil will change your spirit of joy into a spirit of frustration and cause you to say, Oh, let s just get this, and get it over with! You know who I m talking about. You ve met him before. You say he s been with in Christmases past? But you didn t realize who he was and what he was doing. So, the next time he starts doing his thing on your Cthristmas spirit, say very loudly, Get thee behind me, Advent Devil! Way behind me! And then leave him there (far behind) as you make plans to be at one of our beautiful Christmas Even services where we can experience the real wonder, love, and praise of Christ s birth. - Roy FIVE SERVICES CHRISTMAS EVE! one MORNING service FOUR EVENING SERVICES Next Week s Calendar Sunday, December 24 CHRISTMAS EVE - ADVENT WEEK 4 10 a.m. Worship in the Sanctuary 4 p.m. Children & Families Christmas Eve Service 5 p.m. Children & Families Christmas Eve Service 7 p.m. Candlelight & Communion Christmas Eve Service 11 p.m. Candlelight & Communion Christmas Eve Service Monday, December 25 CHRISTMAS DAY Church office and building closed all day Tuesday, December 26 CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY Church office and building closed until noon Wednesday, December 27 6:15 a.m. Men s Small Group, Room a.m. Younger Men s Bible Study, Pancake Pantry Thursday, December 28 6 p.m. Youth Girls Basketball Practice, D.H. 7 p.m. Youth Boys Basketball Practice, D.H.
