On the Right Path The News let ter of the South ern Mary land Emmaus Com mu nity 1st Quarter 2018 Walk In the Light Volume 18 Issue 1 Spring 2018 Walk Update - Men's Walk Rescheduled We wanted to update the community on where the Spring 2018 walks stand. Although there were pilgrim applications on file for both men and women, the Board discussed the number of applications received by the first cutoff date (January 24 for men, and 31 for women pilgrim applications) and they determined that not enough applications for the men s walk had been received to hold a men s walk this spring. The good news is that the men's walk has been rescheduled for November There were 20 women s pilgrim applications received, with 16 confirmed to be able to attend the walk. The Board is prayerfully hopeful that more applications will be received. [At the February 17 th Board Meeting the Board voted to have walk number #58 and to continue accepting applications.] Pilgrim applications can and should be submitted all year long. Ideally, it is important to have more than the minimum number of applications available since potential pilgrims may not be able to attend a specific Walk, and some who plan to attend may need to drop out unexpectedly. You may not be aware, but our community has historically had 1-3 pilgrims unable to walk after they are confirmed, sometimes as late as the start of a Walk weekend, which does not allow for a replacement of that pilgrim on the walk. If drops are known sooner, it is always preferable to replace that pilgrim with someone else, hence the importance of having additional applications in hand to fill at least some of these vacancies. Southern Maryland Emmaus See you at the Gathering Next Gathering - March 17, 2018 Pot Luck at 5 pm Gathering at 6 pm at Bethel UMC Swanson Rd. Upper Marlboro, MD Bring Friends, Fam ily, Neighbors. Everyone Welcome! See you there! Have you have identified and spoken with someone who would be a good person to sponsor? If so, continue the conversation, and invite the person to complete a pilgrim application. The person will be on the weekend that God has planned for them. His timing is perfect. All He asks is that we Count on Christ as He is Counting on Us and share the gift of Emmaus with people around us.

Emmaus Shorts Open Sesame - Please! Okay, it wasn t quite as intense as being buried by a snowstorm, or cut off from civilization in a lonely mountain pass. But the sudden realization that I could not get the garage door open and that both of our cars were inside gave rise to a sudden feeling of being trapped at home. Just after pulling into the garage, I heard a loud SNAP and then a crash as the garage door fell to the ground. One of the torsion springs above the door had snapped. These springs are integral to opening the door, and I found that I was unable to lift the door, even manually, without the assistance of the spring. Like Ali Baba, I stood staring at the door, straining to lift it up, and muttering all sorts of incantations. But not even the always reliable Open Sesame had any effect on the surprisingly stubborn contraption. I was feeling like the 97lb weakling in the old Charles Atlas ads. This door was figuratively kicking sand in my face. A little online research convinced me that trying to replace these springs was not a typical do-it-yourself operation, but something that needed to be done by professionals. The professionals could not come out until the following day. In the scheme of life s hardships, this was hardly a major event, but it did serve to remind me of how dependent we are upon our mechanical devices, and how easily our lives can be disrupted by that dependence. Opening doors is something that we take for granted. Try counting the number of times you open and close doors during the course of your day. Then consider how your day would be if those doors could not be opened. Doors are one way we connect with our world. But let s not forget that a door is also the way in which we can connect to our Lord. Matthew 7:7 says, Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. God holds the answers to all of our problems, and to the daily trials we all face. Isn t it comforting to know that He will always answer the door when we knock? - Dan Brennan On the Right Path Dead line for next is sue is May 1, The pre ferred method of sub mis sion is as an MSWord doc u ment file or a WordPerfect file (.rtf file also ac cept able) sent via- to the fol low ing ad dress: dbrennan6@verizon.net. 5 Emmaus News Letter Agape Dear Friends, My name is Len Lent, I worship at First Saints Community Church, I walked on Maryland Emmaus #85 and sat at the table of Shalom. I served on Southern Maryland Emmaus walk #1 as an assistant table leader. I had the privilege to serve as Weekend Lay director for walk #15. Lastly, I have served as the Community Lay Director. I return to the Board as the Agape Coordinator. For most of my life I introduced myself as Leonard. On my pilgrim walk they put Len on my button. I never was troubled by anyone calling me Len or Lenny before but I introduced myself as Leonard. After that weekend I was changed, I gained a confidence in God s love for me and a confidence in my faith. Trusting God s love for me made it easier to love others without conditions. Ever since my pilgrim weekend I have introduced myself as Len. Southern Maryland Emmaus gave me a wonderful outlet to share this love that God has shown me. I have served on many weekends as Lead Agape, but this role as Agape Coordinator is new to me. I will need the help of many of you in the community if I am to pull this off. The women s weekend, for example, will need a lot of walk on agape help: Friday needs 3 people at various times, Saturday needs 4 people and about 8 to help with dinner, not to mention help setting up candlelight. Sunday needs 2 people and about 8 to help with cleanup. If you have done any of these jobs in the past, thank you. If you are willing to help again (or for the first time) Please let me know. I will also need to find a replacement for Jane Elliott who takes care of our wall agape. Jane will be retiring from the position after many faithful years of service. The position requires receiving and printing wall agape from other communities for our walks and sending our community wall agape to other communities. It is a very important part of the walk. If this is something you are willing to do please let me know. I would like to close by saying thank you to everyone who serves our community in any way great or small. We have impacted many lives, and I look forward to impacting many more. Your Brother In Christ Len How to Get a Pilgrim A Testimony by Barry Oren We all know that God puts the Walks together - right? So how does this actually happen? Here s what happened for me recently. I was talking with a relatively new member of our praise band after service one day you know just the normal chit-chat type of conversation. I asked Johnny (I ll call him that cuz that s his name ) how his new year was shaping up and this is what he proceeded to tell me. Well pretty good, but it was kind of a wild start to the new year and I wouldn t tell this to just anybody, but maybe you can help me make some sense of this stuff that happened on New Year s Day. Johnny told me a tale of coming home from a family gathering and seeing smoke off in the distance. We just drove past, but I felt like I should slow down and circle the neighborhood and take a closer look. When Katie (his wife) asked me where I was going I told her I think we should go check the smoke out. Katie responded, Oh good for some reason I was trying to figure out how to ask you to do that. Johnny continued, "we went by this condo and smoke was coming outta this window on the top floor, so I told Katie to take the kids home and call 911 (of course our phones were dead and today of all days we forgot chargers)." He ran up and tried knockin on the door but there was no answer, so he knocked on all the other doors in that building and got folks moving outside. see Pilgrim page 10 5

Wanted! Our New Communications Director Issues a Challenge Wanted! Our New Com mu ni ca tions Di rec tor Is sues a Chal - lenge Wanted: church through the development of Christian disciples and leaders.* Reach out to others to share this experience: Anyone from the Southern Maryland Emmaus Community who remembers: My new best friend and then silence til dawn and the shock that someone made your bed for you Waking up Friday morning of your walk to the pristine, serene setting of West River That first talk on priority Holy Communion together and dying moments Having a place for Jesus at your table for meals... That incredible feeling of Agape Love when you stepped out for Candlelight The letters from loved ones on Sunday afternoon and then closing with Holy Communion together and singing Have You Seen Wanted: Anyone from the Southern Emmaus Community who has ever recommended a book, restaurant or movie to someone Wanted: Anyone from the Southern Maryland Emmaus Community willing to share the love of Jesus Christ Gee Barry - this is me! What do I need to do? If you ve recommended a book or a restaurant or a movie why wouldn t you you share this experience? Our job is to share the Barry Oren Gospel of Jesus Christ with others. Our job is not to decide before we even extend the invitation why someone can t participate Our job is to extend the invitation...god puts the walk together! Here s my testimony to you: I m Barry Oren and I walked on Southern Maryland Emmaus Walk #41. I worship at The Nichols-Bethel United Methodist Church in Odenton, Maryland and sat at the table of Thomas Clap! I was invited 5 years before God put my walk together for me. Through a variety of scheduling clashes and cancelled walks some would say that my walk was delayed it was not. My walk was right on time - God s time! Now, nearly five (5) years after my walk here s what has happened. I was the first person at Nichols-Bethel to attend the Walk to Emmaus. We now have over 30 members in our local church community! When I left my walk I committed to bring the experience to others and as God was willing this has happened. Reach out through the Walk to Emmaus: The Walk to Emmaus is a spiritual renewal program intended to strengthen the local I ve been asked how I ve been successful I haven t been successful at all. God was successful using me. God puts the walks together! see Wanted page 9 8

Wanted from page 8 However, I have done and continue to do what I was asked to do - go out and make disciples - sure it s just in my little world... Over the years at Nichols-Bethel we have been successful with the personal approach and with open houses where we simply show the video and answer questions about the Walk to Emmaus. This year we used the personal approach and brief testimonies at each of our services over the course of three Sundays We have 10 applications on file and 8 for the spring walks! Needed: Currently, as a community we re short of our goals. I invite you all to step it up. Accept God s nudge when you re talking with someone and you think - wow this would be a great person for our walk - invite that person now meet with them, call them whatever it takes, make the arrangements, put out the invitations and let God put the walk together as He sees fit. We try to have two walks each year and when we cancel a walk we don t just deny someone the personal, spiritual renewal we experienced, we also lose momentum with our teams to provide the best experiences possible to our Pilgrims, we lose momentum within the community and we deny God the opportunity to work miracles with us. Although we had to cancel the men's walk, what we need is to fill the spring women's walk in the next five days so we can put the finishing touches on our Pilgrim lists. Please don t just pray on it - act on it as well. If you have someone in the works feel free to contact me directly with the details and I ll forward the information to our registrars. I know this has been lengthy, but we re worth it! Thank you all! De Colores! In His Name - Barry Editor's Note: Barry Oren is our new Communications Director. * from our literature... My name is Connie Wells; I attend First Saints Community Church, California Campus. I walked on SME #28 and sat at the table of Naomi (clap). Have you ever read a book that you knew God placed in your hands? Well, that book for me is The Daniel Dilemma, How to Stand Firm and Love Well in a Culture of Compromise by Pastor Chris Hodges. Sheila Hanson received a copy from her brother at Christmas. Pastor Hodges is the founding and senior pastor of Church of the Highlands, the second largest evangelical church in America with 45,000 members. Sheila s brother goes to Pastor Hodges church in Birmingham, Alabama. In the book Pastor Chris examines the life of the prophet Daniel, who persevered in a corrupt culture that closely resembles our own and emerged as an influential force in God s redemptive plan. This book shows us that we can hold firmly to biblical beliefs without becoming obnoxious, insulting, or mad. Whenever our faith is test we must choose whom we will serve. Convictions require that we decide what s right ahead of time. They re not based on what feels good or seems right in the moment. They are, instead, the unmovable foundation upon which our lives our built. We must stay full of the Word of God, using it as the guiding light for our daily lives and moral basis for our value system. If we keep our eyes on the firm ground of God s truth, deciding what we believe before we are tested, we will stand strong no matter how many bow down to the cultural pressure around us. This book is a must read for Christians today. DeColores! 9

Southern Maryland Emmaus Board of Directors Meeting Highlights The Board meets monthly, and here are the highlights from meetings in December and January: Reports are provided by each member of the Board on his/her area of responsibility as follows: The Board welcomed the following new members to the board:pj Pitonyak, Assistant Community Lay Director; Lynn Lent, Agape Coordinator; Cef Epps, Community Events and Fourth Day Coordinator; and Barry Oren, Communications Director. The Registrar (Connie Shepherd) went over the details for the upcoming Women s Walk #58 including 16 current Pilgrim applications. The Men s Walk #57 has been cancelled for the Spring. Possible dates are currently being investigated for a Fall 2018 Men s Walk. The CSD (Community Spiritual Director), Ken Valentine, reminded the board that there will be three clergy retirements this July 1 (which includes Ken). There currently is no firm replacement for Ken as our CSD. Team Selections are complete and operating for the Woman s Walk and will begin anew for the Men s Walk as soon as a Fall 2018 date has been confirmed. We all thank the outgoing Board members for their faithful service: Jan Drass, Gordon Piscacek, Phil Day and Margaret Kolbe. Pilgrim from page 5 Then Johnny told me," I asked myself, well what should I do?, and he said the guy next to him answered, go upstairs and knock again except there was no one next to me so I ran back up the steps and knocked as hard as I could." There was no response, but he could hear dogs barking Again, the guy next to him said, try the door maybe it s unlocked. Again, there was no guy next to me, but I tried the door and it was unlocked and as I opened the door the guy said, go in and get the dogs out. Johnny went in checked all the rooms in the small condo and got the dogs out, found no one else and the smoke was getting worse so he went out front with the dogs. The fire department was there and took care of things and took the dogs as well. Johnny asked me, You know about this stuff, whaddaya think this has been bugging me all week? I replied, Johnny, if God is talking to you -and clearly He is then let s talk about this upcoming Walk to Emmaus. I proceeded to explain that when these types 10 of God Sightings occur then we need to ferret out what God has in store for us and this Walk to Emmaus is a great opportunity to experience some incredible things which can help you discern where God wants you. I just happen to have a file of Emmaus info on hand in our church and I shared brochures with him, an application and promised to send him a video about Emmaus. Johnny ed me a few days later and said, "I really think I need to do this " It s good for us to remember that God puts the walks together and even though I was teaming on this upcoming Walk, I was able to get another member of our reunion group to become his sponsor. You see it s incumbent upon us to take every opportunity to say yes when God tells us to work with a Pilgrim, rather than taking that first opportunity to say I can t.

A Communique About a Communicator A brief thank you from the Editor If you've been reading On the Right Path over the past several years, you have been largely reading the work of one tireless individual. Jan Drass, our outgoing Communications Director was the driving force behind much of the content in our quarterly publication. That's not to take anything away from others who contributed from time to time, but simply to acknowledge the tremendous effort Jan devoted to making this newsletter the best it could be. set the schedule and kept me honest about meeting it consulted with me regularly (made me feel important) And that's just what she did for the newsletter. She also made sure the community was informed with regular notices about events, prayer requests, and more. She was certainly an example of the Body of Christ as Emmaus would have us all to be. She will be missed. When you see Jan, be sure to thank her. Want to know what that looks like? Well, she wrote many of the stories in each issue gathered material from community members proofread and corrected my many errors And as Jan leaves, we are blessed to welcome Barry Oren as our new Communications Director. Be sure to read his story on page 7 of this issue. - Dan Brennan - Editor Women's Walk #58 Team 11

Board Member - Jim Risley - Music Director Hello! My name is Jim Risley and I worship at La Plata United Methodist Church in La Plata, MD. I walked on Southern Maryland Emmaus walk #41 and sat at the table of Matthew CLAP! I have been on the board for two years as assistant Agape/Agape and as Music Director. I have enjoyed being on the Southern Maryland Emmaus board and I am looking forward to another year as the Music Director. Archie (Verdiglione) first brought the Walk to Emmaus to my attention as we worshiped together at La Plata UMC it took 3 attempts but, I made it and Archie was my sponsor. Walk #41 was very special for me. I often think of my walk and the impact it has had and continues to have in me and my family s lives. During the walk I made many great friends and embarked on a journey to play music to the glory of God. I have teamed on several walks and am looking forward to teaming again. De Colores! Board Member - Priscilla Rollins - Treasurer Hello! My name is Priscilla Rollins and I worship at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in Waldorf. I walked on Southern Maryland Emmaus Walk #50 and sat at the table of Ruth-CLAP! I have served on the Southern Maryland Emmaus Board for two years. First as the Reunion Coordinator and now as the Treasurer. I joined the Board to be a better servant of God and to learn how to serve my church better. My walk was mind blowing for me and I wanted to learn more from liked minded people. Pastor Jeanne Parr planted the seed about Emmaus in me back in Five years had passed and I decided it was time for me to take my spiritual life more seriously. I asked Carol Kern if she would sponsor me and she graciously agreed to do so. I was an emotional wreck over the death of my mom and being verbally harassed on my job. I needed to be around people who truly cared for me as a person. During my walk, I met several beautiful women who encouraged me to use my voice and speak up. Candlelight was amazing. Ellen Bertelson escorted down the candlelight path with people singing Jesus Jesus... I was so overjoyed to see so many people come out and open their hearts to us through song, prayer and letters. I did a lot of crying, but it was tears of joy because my burdens were lifted from me with God s grace and joy. I believe in the power of the Emmaus Walks and that is why I proudly serve as God s Servant. Board Member - Barry Oren - Communications Director We welcome Barry as our new Communications Director. Read about him and his important message for all of us on page 8. 12
