1 October 11, 2015 When the first announcement of FrancisFest 2015 was published in the Parish Bulletin, Fr. Reu s message to me was, May our Lord and our Seraphic Father St. Francis, guide and bless you and your working committees to make this year s celebration a great success. Thus started Our Fantastic Journey which was lighted up every step of the way by this blessing. What a great FrancisFest it was! It was truly God s handiwork for how else could it have been! How thankful we are that Fr.Reu was very enthusiastic and supportive! WE ARE ALSO VERY THANKFUL 1. That Cecile Licad, our chosen artist, was free to come on the exact date we wanted. And she was truly amazing! Thank you Cecile for wowing our audience with your music! 2. That the piano she wanted to play on would arrive on time! 3. That Piki Lopez very happily agreed to partner with us with his ABS CBN Philharmonic Orchestra and the unbelievable Gerard Salonga! What brilliant collaboration! Thank you Piki, and thank you Gerard for your amazing rapport with Cecile! 4. That St.Francis and St.Clare made sure the weather cooperated. It was raining hard in the morning of the concert, but stopped altogether in the afternoon! 5. That although no one wanted to accept the Chairmanship of Solicitation Committee, God took care of that too. All took it upon themselves to solicit from their families, generous friends and parishioners. They seemed to come from everywhere, dropping their donations even up to the last day before the concert. It truly was as I had urged, Give your Best Effort and let the Lord decide! And God has surprised us with unprecedented results. He knows how much we need to help our many needy and marginalized friends. And He has provided! 6. That all our co-workers in this journey immediately responded to God s call, 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time MESSAGE OF THANKS FROM OUR FRANCISFEST CHAIRMAN working zealously and so efficiently to bring us to an amazing outcome: Suzette Gatmaitan and Girlie Sison, my two ever faithful A s Angels, without whom I would not have accepted this awesome responsibility. Suzette took the whole project by the handle, had a working agenda every week, printed our posters, and tarps, made sure that all articles reached the Parish Bulletin, and finally put together and printed our special Souvenir Program. She and Girlie Sison were also the Program coordinators on concert night. Girlie Sison, provided so much assistance needed. She took care of the Ushers, sourced the Sounds and Lights, conceived the idea of giant screens so people could see from any angle, far or near. She also put up the tents over pathways, from drop-off points to the Church, to the Parish Center, and 2015 Year of the Poor - Mercy and Compassion Forbes Park, Makati to the Convento, a great convenience and protection for everybody. Edmund Lim, our Numbers Guru, who kept very strict control of tickets, and knew at any given time how the tickets were going. He also kept strict tag of everything we were receiving and there was great rejoicing every time we hit a major mark! And he was meticulous in keeping record of everything spent. Dee Jalandoni Chan, who was present at every meeting, making sure that Parish announcements would be accurate and interesting. Fortune Ledesma, a tireless worker despite her busy schedules, who mobilized her Ladies Committee, and drew them to enthusiastically participate in this very important Parish event. We pray that they continue to remain close to our Parish Family. Lyn Rivilla, who was always ready when no one could do the job. She was the first to present a list of individuals and companies whose help we could solicit. She took charge of laminating IDs for members of the Choir and of the press. When we needed Tiffany Chairs for the Concert, she readily sourced them. Tina Teehankee, who efficiently took care of all ads and solicitation letters. Her company even provided a super Volvo and driver for the whole duration of Cecile s stay. Lourdes de Leon, who edited the articles that appeared not only in the Parish Bulletin but also in our Souvenir Program. I felt secure after she had gone through all my articles and those of the Souvenir Program. Jaime Blanco, our PPC President, who provided interesting input at the weekly meetings. He took charge of the distribution of all our posters and tarps, and put the event in the Social Media. turn to page 11 Santuario de San Antonio Parish Center Office Tel. nos

2 Parish Bulletin SUNDAY GOSPEL REFLECTION by Fr. Baltazar Obico, OFM 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time INTRODUCTION: The African hunters have a clever way of trapping monkeys. They slice the coconut in two and in one half of the shell cut a hole just big enough for a monkey s hand to pass through. They place an orange in the other half and then fasten together the two halves. When the unsuspecting monkey swings by and smells the orange, it slips its hand through the small hole, grasps the orange and tries to pull it through the hole. The orange is too big for the hole. The persistent monkey continues to pull and pull never realizing the danger it is in. As long as the monkey keeps its fist wrapped around the orange, the monkey is trapped. The only way the monkey can save its life is to let go of the orange and flee. GOSPEL: The Gospel narrative tells us about a rich man enthusiastically telling Jesus, the Good Teacher, that he has observed all the commandments from his youth. Jesus, looking at him, loved him. It is more than admiration, respect or sentimentality. It is a gut-wrenching concern one has for a loved one about to take his own life. All that is important in a moment like that is to get the gun out of his hands and help him discover a reason to live. (It is as if you tell the monkey to let go of the orange if you want to be free.) You lack one thing; go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor and you will have treasures in heaven; then come and follow me. Wholehearted discipleship cannot take place until the ties to the man s possessions are broken, ties so intense and so enslaving that he can only hang his head and walk away. Possessions have a peculiar and insidious way of becoming our masters. Precisely because they hold the potential for good and evil, they easily seduce us and make us their slaves. Jesus, in speaking to the disciples, is 2 frank about the unusual difficulty facing a rich person who wants to live faithfully under the reign of God. The statement that it is easier for a camel to go through a needle s eyes than for a rich man to enter the kingdom in fact expresses a total impossibility. The disciples, no doubt thinking that riches are material signs of God s blessing (a notion occasionally expressed in Jewish literature and certainly alive and well in Western Christianity) are thoroughly perplexed by what they hear, and ask in exasperation, Who can be saved? Jesus replies, In God all things are possible. WORD: Today we are facing the crisis of prosperity. Compared to most humans in this planet, most of us are comfortable, secure and quite healthy, amazingly so. The worldview that formed us in the last forty years is one where there is no limit to our growth, our achievements as well as the earth s resources. (Unlimited calls and unlimited texts.) Things which have been luxuries for kings have become commonplace. In our globalized economy, every luxury is available locally, nearby. We can shop online. Easy availability soon becomes expectation, then eventually habituation and finally entitlement. Wasn t life always this way? Isn t that the way it s supposed to be? We created a prosperity gospel, a religion of limousine liberals who see no conflict between the Gospel and amassing huge personal fortunes for their private lifestyles. Splurge and indulge. Savor every second of your stay in this planet. In the last forty years, it has become easy to get rich easily. Whereas before, human history has connected money with actual work, effort and sacrifice or productivity; then for the first time in history money becomes associated with money money earning money without any effort at all. A case of financial incest. The making of money is in itself the work and even the most admired and envied work. The reason behind why spiritual traditions in general and the Gospel in particular are against owning material possessions is that because it gives a false sense of security, alienating us from our spiritual origins. When we accumulate wealth and possessions, we relieve our basic anxiety. When the barn is full, a sense of safety replaces fear. Storing up things in the present make us feel that the future is protected. The larger the accumulation, the greater the sense of safety. It won t be long before our false sense of security is assured. We then alienate ourselves from our neighbors whom we consider a threat to this wealth. The need for feeling safe makes the idea RANDOM THOUGHTS Voices from yesterday and today By: Peachy Maramba ST. TERESA of AVILA: First Woman Doctor of the Universal Church/ Doctor of Prayer/ Founder of Discalced Carmelites October 15 In 1970 St. Teresa of Avila was the first woman to be made a Doctor of the Church for her writings on prayer. This came from her extraordinary prayer life. When Teresa had a recurrence of her illness, she was helped greatly by a little book given her by her uncle called Third Spiritual Alphabet. It dealt with prayers of recollection and quiet. Using this book as her guide, Teresa began to concentrate on mental prayer. This was her first step toward becoming a contemplative. The possibility of conversing with God and having him for a friend and Teresa s turn to page 4 of sharing ludicrous. The drive to assuage insecurity can be ruthless. It pushes people into self-centered behaviors that they in turn commit injustices. Even more, they tolerate any injustice as long as it benefits them. Possessions make us self-sufficient and forgetful of our calling to live in community, sharing and solidarity. There is in each of us a streak of greed and covetousness. Our greed is intimately linked with our lack of love. We surround ourselves with all kinds of gadgets and accessories to compensate for our lack of self-esteem. We make sure our pendants are heavier than our necks, our earrings larger than our ears. We buy the affections of our loved ones and spend a fortune for pleasure. But the more we satisfy our material cravings, the more we are starved for love; the more alienated we become in a world of relationships.

3 October 11, 2015 The ABC s of Catholic Doctrine by Lianne Tiu Grow old and be happy! Watching the live coverage of Pope Francis nine-day visit to Cuba and the United States makes us wonder how the Holy Father keeps his spirits high. He is about to turn 79 in December! Besides, he suffers from a bad knee and sciatica, a nerve condition that can radiate pain from the lower back down the hips and to the legs. His example is inspiring to both the elderly and the young to have an active lifestyle and be of service to others. However, some of the elderly can fall into self-pity, thinking they are unproductive or they are alone as loved ones die. The fact that they are still alive means God still has something for them to fulfill. Here are some suggestions which elderly people can do: -Devote your time, talents, and resources in a generous way to charitable activities. -Spread the Gospel through teaching and your examples. -Volunteer to become lectors, collectors, members of choir, or be altar servers or lay ministers of the Eucharist (if suitably trained). -Participate in the different ecclesial associations and movements such as Cooperators of Opus Dei, Legion of Mary, Christian Life Community, Regnum Christi, and Couples for Christ. -Teach your children to be good parents and spouses. Grandparents Leo & Linda de Ocampo (parishioners living in Paraiso St. Dasmarinas Village) with their children and grandchildren in St. Mark s Square, Venice. -Teach your grandchildren human values and faith. Pope Francis said: Grandparents are the living memory of the family, they passed on the faith to us. You have the charism to bridge generation gaps as many young people find understanding and love in your eyes, words, and caresses. -Spend time to pray, meditate, and grow in the interior life; Pray with the family; pray for others, including the Pope, as he has repeatedly requested. -Patiently and cheerfully accept your sufferings, illnesses, and crosses for love of God. -Smile! When we learn to forget ourselves And in Milan. and love God and others, we will be happy. We saw the face of Pope Francis in this trip; and his face says everything He is really happy. 4 Parish Bulletin Random Thoughts...from page 2 inseparable linkage of love for God and service to the world are two invaluable lessons from one of the outstanding masters of Christian prayer. La Madre (as Teresa was often called) was one of the greatest mystics and visionaries in church history. And yet she stresses that a decent life and well-done daily work are much more important than any states of rapture. Ultimate love for one s fellows is the touchstone that tells whether the love we evince for God is genuine. The Lord wants works! If you know that we could obtain relief for a sick person, then drop your devotions at once and do it. Love costs something. God s friendship doesn t fall into your lap without your taking a hand in it. Prayers aren t an end in themselves. They have to serve the Church and the world. Otherwise they are useless. Prayers are a power. It helps us to wish, to dream, to talk about it, to have a vision and to communicate it in action. Prayer in my view is nothing but friendly intercourse and frequent solitary converse with Him who we know loves us. Pray wherever you are and pray whatever you are doing, she tells us. So great and continuous was her prayer and her realization of the presence of God. Prayer and penance are the golden keys that unlock the treasures of heaven, the forces that open the heart of God and let loose His rich torrents of divine favors. Distractions when praying are inevitable. The darting ideas that come to us as we pray are like wild horses pulling the mind here and there. Therefore we must not fret over them. In fact it is the devil persuading people not to pray. Thus praying (for Teresa) was hard work. In order to pray well, Teresa gives us 3 recommendations or requisites: 1. Real but regulated love for one another. 2. Detachment from all created things. 3. True humility most important and embraces all the rest. Determination is necessary for mental prayer and advancement in the spiritual life. One must push ahead even when things are difficult. Still at times a person should turn from prayer to seek relief in legitimate recreation. The beginner in prayer must think of himself as one setting out to make a garden in which the Lord is to take his delight yet in soil most unfruitful and full of weeds. To water the garden properly we must love our neighbor, be detached from creatures and be truly humble. This is Teresa s message for the modern era: Learn to pray. Prayer is the highest art. It requires: perseverance, insight into self, insight into others, mortification and that humble spirit whereby the creature constantly looks up imploringly to the Creator. In conclusion Teresa reminds us: The prayer that pleases God most is the one which brings out improvement and which shows itself in good works, rather than the pleasure of one s own satisfaction. 11 Message of...from page 1 Caron Macasaet, who as Secretary of the Ladies Committee, made sure that Fortune Ledesma and her Ladies Committee were always represented in all our meetings. She gave us updated information on the progress of this powerful committee. Aside from her own donation, she successfully solicited donations from family and friends. Crissy Castillo, who led the Youth Committee, was responsible for the tickets for members of the press and flowers to be presented to concert participants. Mariza del Rosario, for her efforts in soliciting from her connections all the way to the end, and beyond. Rosalinda Orosa, for being the first to come up with a wonderful take on Cecile. Peachy Maramba, for all the St. Francis tidbits hardly known by most. Zari Poe and Wilma Huang, who went about their tasks quietly, but who did a superb job decorating the Church and the Parish Center. How beautiful these venues looked! They also provided our Committee ribbons. Entang Carballo, who made sure everybody was provided with meals and snacks, every day for three days: musicians, choir members, technical workers, etc. There were so many! Her input and assistance for the Cocktails was invaluable! October 11, 2015 Cesar Poe, in charge of Security, who together with his staff made everyone feel secure. Traffic was so well regulated, and no complaints were made. Bingbing Quiros, who not only solicited substantial donations from her relatives and friends, but also negotiated an exchange deal with Fairmont for Cecile s 8 days stay. Mike Limpe, past President of the Parish Council, who made sure that Committee IDs were laminated. He provided input at the meetings and made a personal donation before leaving for New York to attend a relative s funeral, and was back in time for the Concert. -Our Parish Office Staff that worked endlessly, led by Bernie Andulte, Elma Lumbao and our Social Workers. Our Parish Maintenance crew, who were always on their toes, urged on by Belen Salano, our new Parish Administrator. It was a Baptism of Fire for Belen, so new in our Parish, and was immediately plunged into the nitty-gritty tasks of a major Parish event. With her, the crew even stayed up to 2am to make sure the Church was ready for the 6:15am mass the next day! THANK YOU LORD FOR ALL THE PEOPLE YOU SENT US FOR THIS WONDERFUL EVENT THAT GAVE YOU HONOR AND GLORY. YOU TRULY BLESSED OUR FANTASTIC JOURNEY TO FRANCISFEST 2015! 11
