1 August 14, 2016 We Care Because We Pray 20th Sunday of Ordinary Time Forbes Park, Makati Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary by Scott P. Richert Celebrated every year on August 15, the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary commemorates the death of Mary and her bodily assumption into Heaven, before her body could begin to decay - a foretaste of our own bodily resurrection at the end of time. Because it signifies the Blessed Virgin s passing into eternal life, it is the most important of all Marian feasts and a Holy Day of Obligation. continued on page 3 Santuario de San Antonio Parish Office Tel. nos
2 Parish Bulletin Catholic Devotions by Hannah Roa Popular catholic devotions cannot be traced directly back to the ministry of Jesus and the practice of the Apostles. Most were developed gradually over the years and even centuries as people sought ways of living out their faith. They arose in response to the spiritual needs of the culture in which they take shape; the degree to which any particular devotion is practiced varies over time and according to the culture. Popular catholic devotions are expressions of love and fidelity that arise from the intersection of one s own faith, culture and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It enlivens and nurtures our Catholic faith, touching our hearts and allowing us to express our love of God. Our parish has such daily, weekly, monthly and yearly devotions too. These devotions are: Daily Prayers Honoring of our Blessed Virgin Mary by saying the Rosary before each weekday mass as well as Praying the Angelus before every 615am, 1215pm and 6pm mass Monthly Prayers 2nd Tuesdays - Our Lady of Lourdes; patron saint for the sick Yearly Celebrations June 13 - Feast of St. Anthony of Padua October 4 - Feast of St. Francis of Assisi Weekly Prayers Tuesdays - St. Anthony of Padua; patron saint of lost and stolen articles Wednesdays - Our Lady of Perpetual Help Fridays - St. Francis of Assisi; patron saint of animals and ecology Everyone is welcome to take part in any or all of these devotions. Keep your faith growing. 2
3 August 14, 2016 from page 1 History of the Assumption The Feast of the Assumption is a very old feast of the Church, celebrated universally by the sixth century. The feast was originally celebrated in the East, where it is known as the Feast of the Dormition, a word which means the falling asleep. The earliest printed reference to the belief that Mary s body was assumed into Heaven dates from the fourth century, in a document entitled The Falling Asleep of the Holy Mother of God. The document is written in the voice of the Apostle John, to whom Christ on the Cross had entrusted the care of His mother, and recounts the death, laying in the tomb, and assumption of the Blessed Virgin. Tradition variously places Mary s death at Jerusalem or at Ephesus, where John was living. Eastern Christians, both Catholic and Orthodox, continue to refer to the Feast of the Assumption as the Dormition of the Theotokos today. A Required Belief The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven at the end of her earthly life is a defined dogma of the Catholic Church. On November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII, exercising papal infallibility, declared in Munificentissimus Deus that it is a dogma of the Church that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory. As a dogma, the Assumption is a required belief of all Catholics; anyone who publicly dissents from the dogma, Pope Pius declared, has fallen away completely from the divine and Catholic Faith. Pope Pius XII, in the text explaining his definition of the dogma of the Assumption, refers repeatedly to the...the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory. Pope Pius XII, November 1, 1950 Blessed Virgin s death before her Assumption, and the consistent tradition in both the East and the West holds that Mary did die before she was assumed into Heaven. However, since the definition of the Assumption is silent on this question, Catholics can legitimately believe that Mary did not die before the Assumption. Santuario de San Antonio Pastoral Team Fr. Devotion to saints, with the Virgin Mary as the most prominent example, is a key characteristic of Roman Catholicism. Catholic devotions have various forms, ranging from formalized, multi-day prayers such as novenas to activities which do not involve any prayers, such as Eucharistic adoration outside Mass, the wearing of scapulars, the veneration of the saints, the Canonical coronations of sacred Marian or Christological images and even horticultural practices such as maintaining a Mary garden. Common examples of Catholic devotions include the Rosary, the Stations of the Cross, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Holy Face of Jesus, the various scapulars, the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Seven Sorrows of Mary, novenas to various saints, pilgrimages and devotions to the Blessed Sacrament, and the veneration of saintly images While the Catholic Church considers the liturgy mission of the Church and encourages Catholic often as possible, it also acknowledges the objec and encourages the cultivation of pious acts a the constitution Sacrosanctum Conciliumstate however, is not limited solely to participation in devotions of the Christian people are to be highly they accord with the laws and norms of the Chur are ordered by the Apostolic See.
