1 April 19, 2015 Last April 7, the Santuario De San Antonio Single Young Adults (SYA) visited the Taguig City Jail (TCJ) for the Ground Breaking of the TCJ Multi-Faith Chapel. The chapel will be designed and built by the SYA community through donations. Jolly Gomez gave a speech referring to Psalm 118, The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. Jolly further said that, The cornerstone is what is used to build a firm foundation. The psalm refers to Jesus but I also referred to the inmates. They are rejected by society but our prayer is that through our chapel they can come out as Christ-centered people who will be the cornerstones of their family and community. Present were SYA Prison Ministry head Alli Raval, Arch. Pabs Suarez (SYA), Atty. Jolly Gomez, SSAP-PPC President Jayme Blanco, PNP Regional Director J/ CSUPT Emmanuel Sicio, DSC, J/ SUPT Clement Laboy and J/SINSP Jundelina Jagunap. The chapel will be designed by Arch. Pabs Suarez. The architecture will have an open design to accommodate more seating space. Further, it can be used for different activities for the spiritual growth of the TCJ inmates. There are right now 800 inmates in TCJ. Everyone is welcome to join the Prison Ministry activities in TCJ which also includes cathecism, cooking contest, gift giving, etc. For inquiries and donations, please visit our parish office and look for Ms. Nimfa Dumago, SSAP Social Worker or call Year of the Poor - Mercy and Compassion Forbes Park, Makati 3rd Sunday of Easter Ground Breaking of Multi-Purpose Chapel in Taguig City Jail By Jayme Blanco
2 Parish Bulletin 2 SUNDAY GOSPEL REFLECTION by Fr. Serge Santos, OFM 3rd SUNDAY OF EASTER JOIN THE PILGRIMAGE WITH JESUS CHRIST! The empty tomb as seen by Mary Magdalene, Simon Peter and the beloved disciples is not the evidence that our Lord Jesus Christ rose from the dead (RESURRECTION) but his appearances to Mary Magdalene, to ten of the Apostles, to Peter separately, to two disciples on the road to Emmaus, and later on the apostles and disciples on to Galilee for a period of days. Today s gospel is the story of the appearance of Jesus to the two disciples known as the pilgrims of Emmaus. When the pilgrims finally recognized that the stranger who explained the messianic prophesies on the way to Emmaus was Jesus Christ, they hurried back to Jerusalem to tell the apostles. They found out that the apostles were not convinced of the Resurrection because Peter had seen him. While in the middle of their discussion, Jesus came through the closed door. The questionings of the apostles before Jesus arrived was based on their theory that Jesus could not die so how could he rise again? They were still slow to admit his RESURRECTION. Jesus appeared in a body similar to that which was crucified and ate some food to prove he is truly ALIVE in a new mode of LIFE yes, truly RESURRECTED. At Emmaus the two pilgrims were enlightened and regained their perspective in life and its meaning. In the gospel story, Jesus recounted what the scriptures said about himself: he explained their meaning. In breaking bread he not only shared a meal with them but also revealed himself to them. At mass every Sunday the scriptures are proclaimed and are explained in the homily. In our breaking of the bread, our spiritual meal, Jesus presents himself to us as the ONE WHO PASSED THROUGH DEATH TO GLORY AND THEREBY ATTAINED OUR SALVATION. The truth is that we like these two pilgrims are also on a PILGRIMAGE. We are moving towards our ETERNAL HOME which is with God the Father in HEAVEN. However, during our temporary stay here on earth we may lose our Christian perspectives in life and go astray, become confused, distraught, and discouraged, and thereby be lured to the distractions and temptations of daily life, including ambition of grandeur, power, fame and fortune. Thus, we need our personal EMMAUS were we can be enlightened to straighten out things and worldly issues by the grace, mercy and compassion of God. Our FAITH, HOPE, and LOVE can then be centered on the TRIUNE GOD. Through this enlightenment we can experience his Divine Presence in our everyday life and attain PEACE and JOY! If we have faith, trust and confidence in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, we can choose to accept his invitation by virtue of our baptism and become witnesses like the apostles and disciples (pilgrims) to the SAVING EVENTS OF HIS INCARNATION, PASSION AND DEATH, RESURRECTION AND ASCENSION INTO HEAVEN. Without any reservations, are you READY to JOIN THE PILGRIMAGE WITH JESUS CHRIST? RANDOM THOUGHTS Voices from yesterday and today By: Peachy Maramba ST. 3 Random Thoughts...from page 2 to trust God and to love our neighbor. Our Lord first taught Sister Faustina the Chaplet of Divine Mercy on September 13-14, 1935, which is prayed on one s rosary beads. It was to be a means of obtaining God s pardon. Jesus taught that He would grant everything asked of Him by the saying of this chaplet provided that what they ask is in accord with His will. The novena of Chaplets to the Divine Mercy is to precede the Feast and to begin on Good Friday. Another thing our Lord asked of Sister Faustina was to honor the hour of His death. This is the 3 o clock Prayer. By means of venerating the Divine Mercy image, God promised to grant many unusual graces to souls like: eternal salvation, great progress on the way to sanctity, the grace of a happy death and whatever other graces people will ask of Him. For those who spread the message of Divine Mercy and devotion for it Jesus gave a special promise that at the hour of their death He will not be a judge but a merciful savior for them. However to receive these great gifts certain conditions had to be met: 1. Trust in God s goodness; 2. Active love of neighbor; 3. The state of grace following holy confession; 4. Worthy reception of the Holy Communion on that Sunday. The whole mission of this Sister Faustina is to be found in her diary Divine Mercy in My Soul: The Diary of St. Faustina. In 1933 God told her to write so that the people may learn to love Him and to write about His mercy. So Faustina began to record the spiritual guidance she received through the visions which primarily was the message of the Divine Mercy of God. In the Diary are requests by our Lord that Sister Faustina found a new congregation. Eventually the request of the Lord to found a congregation entirely dedicated to propagate the mystery of the Divine Mercy matured in Faustina s thinking that it referred to a movement made up of active congregations of men and women a supra-national community of people making up one family characterized by the desire to have imprinted upon their hearts and works the divine attribute of mercy. It is interesting to note that God had foretold to Sister Faustina that her work would be interrupted someday. And interrupted it was for twenty long years in the form of a ban to spread the devotion by the Catholic Church itself who wanted time to study the devotion to Divine Mercy. It was not until April 15, 1978 that Pope John Paul II was influential in having the ban lifted. In his second encyclical of his papal reign he talks about Dives in Misericordia or Rich in Mercy no doubt influenced by our Apostle of Divine Mercy herself. Sister Faustina died on October 5, 1938 at the age of 33 the same age of Christ, her spouse. She was beatified in Rome on Mercy Sunday, April 18, 1993 by Pope John Paul II. It was Pope John Paul II who in April 30, 2000 canonized Maria Faustina Kowalska, visionary and Polish mystic, in Rome in front of 100,000 pilgrims. St. Faustina earned her sainthood because she ably fulfilled the three tasks that Jesus entrusted to her: First, to remind the world of God s merciful love for every human being. Second, to spread devotion to the Divine Mercy through veneration of the image, instituting a feast of the Divine Mercy, reciting the chaplet of the divine Mercy and praying at the Hour of Mercy (3:00 pm). And third, to proclaim and entreat God s mercy for the world and an attitude of mercy toward one s neighbor. ANSELM OF CANTERBURY: Father of Scholasticism April 21 St. Anselm was born of a noble Old Burgundian family in Aosta, northern Italy in Deeply influenced by his pious mother Ermenberga St. Anselm knew even at the early age of 15 that he preferred the monastic life over the career in politics that his father, Gundolf, a Lombard nobleman, and landowner had chosen and insisted on for him. Prevented from his dream by his father s opposition and his consequent non-acceptance by the monks in an abbey where he was born due to apprehension of his Father s displeasure, Anselm lost interest in religion and instead led a worldly and dissipated life. When his mother died Anselm who could no longer stand the harshness of his father left home. He bided his time and instead furthered his education. Anselm finally realized his dream when he took his monastic vows in 1061 at the age of 27 in the Benedictine monastery of Bec in Normandy, France where he went attracted by the fame of its great abbot Lanfranc whose pupil, disciple and friend he became. Within just a span of three years he was made Prior because of his outstanding learning. When many of the monks resented his appointment because he was much younger than them, he won them over with his gentleness, firmness and teaching skills. A great believer in education, Anselm had very modern views regarding the training of the youth. It is no wonder that under Anselm Bec became an excellent monastic school famous for scholarship. In 1078 when the saintly turn to page 4 3
4 Parish Bulletin Random Thoughts...from page 3 founder of the abbey of Bec died the monks unanimously chose Anselm as their abbot, which he very reluctantly accepted. But it is as one of the world s greatest and most important original independent and creative thinkers of his age that Anselm made his mark in theology and philosophy making him the greatest theologian of his age and Father of Scholasticism. Anselm s masterpiece and his most famous work in theology is Cur Deus Homo (Why God Became Human). The book explains the wisdom, justice and necessity of the Incarnation. Furthermore the book is the classic treatment of the Redemption. His first book Monologium (1077) is essentially a restatement of all the logical metaphysical arguments he could find in writings by other theologians that God truly exists. Many experts in philosophy consider Anselm to be the author of the ontological argument for the existence of God. His second book Proslogion or Prologue (1078) defined the task of theology as faith seeking understanding. Faith seeking understanding became Anselm s life theme. Anselm also investigated and wrote on free will, truth, the immortality of the soul, the ability to reason in his investigation of even divine mysteries and on faith. Another important component of his understanding and faith was LOVE. It helped him become not only an effective brilliant writer but more importantly a profound and original thinker. In 1093 compelled against his wishes Anselm became archbishop and primate of England. Since it was a time of great dispute with then King William Rufus over the independence of the church Anselm spent most of his time and energy defending the rights of the Church against royal aggression. For this fact he became known as one of the most strenuous defenders of the rights of the Church against the usurpation of kings. In fact because 4 The ABC s of Catholic Doctrine by Lianne Tiu Divorce separates what God has joined together: Based on the new Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey, 60 percent of Filipinos (from the 1800 respondents) want divorce made legal. Does this mean that legislators should listen to the voice of the people by legalizing divorce? The answer is NO. Rather they should listen to the voice of Jesus who said, What therefore God has joined together, let no man put asunder. (Matt 19:6) Whoever divorces his wife and marries another, commits adultery against her; and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery. (Mark 10:11-12) Nobody can change the teachings of God on the indissolubility of marriage. No power on earth, not even the Catholic Church nor the Pope, can break the marriage bond. Why is God so firm against divorce? It is essential that children should have the emotional, mental, spiritual stability that can be achieved only when they are lovingly reared and cared for by their own of this feud with the tyrannous king Anselm was exiled several times only returning back to Canterbury for the last time in In 1102 at a council in Westminster called by Anselm to resolve this never ending dispute, a far reaching and remarkable resolution came up denouncing the slave trade. Anselm stands out in history as one of the first high ranking official to denounce the buying and selling of human beings. When Anselm died in 1109 he had spent at least his last two years in peace. He was canonized in Clement XI declared him a Doctor of the Church in 1720 called by the introduction of the parents. Also, husband and wife need to complete each other, draw strength from each other, and contribute to one another s spiritual growth. These are possible when they are no longer two, but one flesh (Mt 19:6), signifying the unbreakable union of husband and wife. Divorce is wrong not only for Catholics; it is wrong for all people, of all times and of all places. The marriage of two non- Catholics, by civil magistrate or minister, is a true and valid marriage. In God s eyes, a divorced non-catholic is not free to re-marry. By legalizing divorce and allowing remarriage, legislators are showing that they are wiser than God, the author of marriage. According to St. Anselm because Adam had infinitely offended God the guilty party which was humanity had to pay the price. Therefore our Redeemer had to combine the natures of God and man. Thus Christ, the Savior of mankind, is both God and man. Read more on St. Anselm of Canterbury at our website
5 April 19, 2015 CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH What happened on Pentecost? Fifty days after his Resurrection, the Lord sent the Holy Spirit down from heaven upon his disciples. The age of the Church began. On Pentecost the Holy Spirit transformed fearful apostles into courageous witnesses to Christ. In a very short time, thousands had themselves baptized: it was the birthday of the Church. The miracle of the languages on Pentecost shows that the Church is there for all peoples from the very beginning: She is universal (= the Latin term for the Greek kat holon, catholic) and missionary. She speaks to all men, overcomes ethnic and linguistic barriers, and can be understood by all. To this day the Holy Spirit is the soul of the Church, the essential principle of her life. What does the Holy Spirit do in the Church? The Holy Spirit builds up the Church and impels her. He reminds her of her mission. He calls people into her service and sends them the necessary gifts. He leads us ever deeper into communion with the Triune God. Even though the Church during her long history has often seemed abandoned by all good spirits, the Holy Spirit has been at work in her despite all the human failings and inadequacies. The mere fact of her two-thousand-year existence and the many saints of all eras and cultures are the visible proof of his presence. The Holy Spirit is the one who maintains the Church as a whole in the truth and leads her ever deeper into the knowledge of God. It is the Holy Spirit who works in the sacraments and brings Sacred Scripture to life for us. Even today he gives his gifts of grace (charisms) to those who are completely receptive to him. What does the Holy Spirit do in my life? The Holy Spirit makes me receptive to God; he teaches me to pray and helps me to be there for others. Augustine calls the Holy Spirit The quiet guest of our soul. Anyone who wants to sense his presence must be quiet. Often this Guest speaks very softly within us and with us, for instance, in the voice of our conscience or through other interior and exterior promptings. Being a temple of the Holy Spirit means being there, body and soul, for this Guest, for God in us. Our body is therefore God s living room, so to speak. The more receptive we are to the Holy Spirit in us, the more he becomes the master of our life, the sooner he will bestow on us even today his charisms for the upbuilding of the Church. And so, instead of the works of the flesh, the fruits of the Spirit grow in us. CALENDAR OF SAINTS FOR THE WEEK April 23 George, martyr The veneration of St. George began as early as the fourth century at Lydda in Palestine, where a church was built in his honor. From antiquity this veneration has spread throughout both the East and West. April 24 Fidelis of Sigmaringen, priest and martyr St. Fidelis was born in the town of Sigmaringen in Germany in He entered the Order of Friars Minor Capuchins and led an austere life of penance, vigils and prayer. Continuously engaged in preaching the word of God, he was commissioned by the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith to preach in the canton of the Grisons. In 1622 he was attacked by a band of heretics and suffered martyrdom at Seewis in Switzerland. April 25 Mark, evangelist St. Mark, a cousin of Barnabas, accompanied St. Paul on his first missionary journey and later went with him to Rome. He was a disciple of St. Peter whose teaching was the basis for Mark s gospel. Mark is said to be the founder of the church of Alexandria. Reference: Christian Prayer: The Liturgy of the Hours.
