1 January 10, 2016 We Care Because We Pray Baptism of the Lord s Feast Forbes Park, Makati Message A very Happy New Year to all of us! The Christmas season officially ends this weekend. As we embark on this new year and new Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) term, allow me to thank everyone who participated and organized all of our parish activities from Advent to Epiphany. The hard work of all our ministry heads and members gave our parish another beautiful Christmas season. Looking forward, the PPC will have their planning day next week to set the goals and direction of the parish for the next two years. Specifically, we will explore 4 key areas where we can make our parish more meaningful in our lives. Firstly, we hope to complete the current reorganization program our Parish priest, Fr. Reu, had began last November with the help of the PPC Execom. This reorganization aims to strengthen our parish organization by improving coordination and cultivating new leaders/members in our different ministries. Secondly, we seek to review and check the physical structure of our 63 year old church. This activity will continue to ensure the comfort of our parishioners while maintaining the upkeep of our facilities. Thirdly, we will strive to develop new plans to enhance the stability of our parish s long term financial well-being. And finally, we will work closely with our Parish priest and pastoral team to stimulate spiritual growth and bonding in our community. As we begin this process of discernment, we request for your continued prayers and understanding. Our goals will only become achievable with your help and God s Grace. Our whole team is elated to serve and we look forward to a year of compassion and mercy. Edmund Lim, KHS PPC President Santuario de San Antonio Parish Office Tel. nos

2 Parish Bulletin JESUS BAPTISM AND OURS (Feast of the Lord s Baptism, 10 January 2016) The feast of the Lord s Baptism brings to a close the Christmas season--which is but a series of epiphanies or manifestations of the Lord (to Mary, to Joseph, to the shepherds, to Simeon and Anna, to the magi). Today is the greatest manifestation of all: Jesus is revealed, not by an angel or by a star, but by the Father himself: You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased (Lk 3:22). A question comes to mind at once: Why did Jesus receive John s baptism, which was a baptism of repentance? Jesus had no sins, hence no need for repentance. John the Baptist, according to the Gospel of Matthew, tried to prevent him, saying: I need to be baptized by you and yet you are coming to me? (Mt 3:14). Jesus answer to John s objection was: Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness (Mt 3:15). The ABC s of Catholic Doctrine by Lianne Tiu Baptism: The Greatest Thing That Can Happen *in the case of adult Baptism January 10, 2016 (Reference: Catholicism Trilogy by Leo Trese; The Faith Explained by Leo Trese; -Pope Francis: Find out the date of your Baptism and celebrate it!) Jesus baptism took place at the very beginning of his public ministry; thus it marks the direction which his entire life would take, namely, to do the will of the Father. It is like his mission statement, which he would reiterate again and again during his public ministry: My food is to do the will of my Father (Jn 4:34). I came not to do my will but the will of him who sent me (Jn 6:38). Father not my will but yours be done (Mt 26:19). There are a few things to learn from Jesus baptism, vis-à-vis our baptismal practices: Jesus, being the Messiah, the Son of God, could have asked John to hold a special service, just for him. However, he preferred to join the repentant crowd. Our families today frown at communal celebrations. Nowadays, when parents prepare for the baptism of their children, they worry mostly about invitations, reception, dress, sponsors, gifts everything except that which pertains to the true meaning of baptism. Perhaps we are harvesting what we sowed in the past. Before Vatican Council II it was a common practice to hold mass baptisms without proper catechesis; quantity, it seems, was of greater concern than quality. Hence now we must not be surprised at the people s lack of under- standing of what baptism really is. Today, the feast of the Lord s baptism, we are invited to re-discover the true meaning and importance of the sacrament of baptism. [Once, a teacher asked her grade 3 pupils: Which of the seven sacraments is the most important? A little girl raised her hand and said: Marriage. The teacher tried to convince her that baptism, not marriage, is the first and most important sacrament. Not in my family, the girl replied, We are decent people. (Source: Millenium Stories, #7).] Baptism is not simply kid stuff, something just for children. It is very much for adults, as it entails one of the most important decisions in life. If children are being baptized it is because of the express wish of the parents and their guarantee to raise their children as good Christians. Baptism is not a mere social event either, like, say, the girls debut. Nor is it a one-day affair; like marriage, baptism entails a life-long commitment to God. Baptism is all about our personal relationship with God: In baptism we become sons/daughters of the Father, disciples of the Son, and temples of the Holy Spirit. A marvellous transformation takes place in us. The effects of baptism are clearly expressed by the symbols used: a) First and foremost water, which is used for cleansing. Baptism cleanses us from original and personal sin. b) Water gives life but also deals death: The Red Sea waters saved the Israelites but drowned the Egyptians. Irrigation water gives life to plants, while flood waters kill and destroy them. So also in baptism we die to our old self but are born to a new life in Christ. It is for this reason that baptism is called our second birth. Yes, indeed; we, the baptized, are born again. Two other symbols, chrism and light are used at baptism. We are not only washed clean and receive new life; we are also anointed, like the prophets of old, for a mission, and are enjoined to become light of the world. Like Jesus, we are empowered by the Holy Spirit to do the will of the Father and to spread the good news of the Gospel everywhere. At the end of every Mass we are told to Go and announce the Gospel of the Lord. That is our baptismal mission. 2 Fr. Jesús Galindo, OFM Baptism, to most of us, is an event when we are busy choosing godparents for our child, looking for a baptismal gown, and preparing for the party. After that, there is hardly a ripple in our family life as we do not even remember the anniversary of the baptism or have any sort of observance! Baptism is, actually, the greatest thing that can happen to us. When we are baptized, a miracle happens to us; and it is far greater than our physical birth. A huge transformation takes place in our souls; and this can be compared to the world s transformation at sunrise. Original sin (and all mortal and venial sins*) disappear from our souls, when we are baptized; just as darkness disappears when the sun comes out. (Sin is actually an absence of love; as darkness is an absence of light.) As the earth becomes beautiful and fruitful under the rays of light flowing from the sun, so do our souls become beautiful and fruitful as they are bathed in the Love flowing from the Holy Spirit. The sun only bathes the earth in light; but the Holy Spirit more than bathes us in His love. His life and love flow through our souls like blood flows through our bodies in transfusion. And we receive powers that are above our human nature, powers that belong only to God: we can know Him, as He knows Himself; we can love Him, as He loves Himself. And these powers are exercised perfectly when we see Him face-to-face in Heaven. Baptism makes us children of God. He is our Daddy who loves us so much. We can talk to Him with the right to be heard and answered. Baptism makes us heirs of God. The moment we are spiritually born (through Baptism), we can already receive our inheritance (which is eternal union with God), to be enjoyed fully when we die. No one can take it away from us, not even God. But we can renounce our rights when we commit mortal sin. This is strange, but the more we spend, the more we have. Each precious grace that we use adds to our inheritance. Every prayer that we say, every confession that we make, every ordinary action that we perform out of love for God - all of them increase our treasures in Heaven. Baptism also gives us the power to receive the other six sacraments, which would be empty and meaningless when given to the unbaptized. We have the power to offer sacrifice to God in union with Christ and to receive the graces from Mass. (While the unbaptized person can only be a passive spectator who cannot receive the graces.) These are just some of the wonders and richness of our Baptism. Pope Francis asked us to find out the date of our Baptism and to celebrate it like a feastday. To know the date is to know a blessed day. We give thanks to God for the great gift of Baptism. Pope Francis baptized an adult in To know the date of our Baptism is to know a blessed day. -Pope Francis Santuario de San Antonio Pastoral Team Fr. Baltazar Obico, OFM Parochial Vicar, Guardian Fr. 4 Parish Bulletin January 10, 2016 Christmas at SSAP Each person has their own calling and purpose from God. You might be a magnificent speaker and read the Word to a congregation as a Lector. You may do extremely well with children and organize children s events and formation activities through the Family and Life Ministry. Perhaps you have been impassioned to care for the sick through the Hospital Ministry or the lonely and isolated through the Prison Ministry. You may feel drawn to education through the JPIC or CCD programs or you can even plan exciting scavenger hunts with the Youth for children of all ages. All these happening in one parish, our parish; all these unified in building the Church and spreading the good news! Truly there is a place for everyone to deepen, enliven, and bring to fruition his/her faith amongst our ministries. This special issue celebrates all the men, women, and children that have shared a part of themselves with the lost, the last, and the least for the year that has passed. Through the joyous spirits of fellowship and community, we welcome the New Year with much anticipation and delight. And for anyone that seeks to encounter Christ or serve even in the tiniest way possible, we urge you to discover the beauty of a life of service, fulfillment, and peace through any of our ministries. A joyful and blessed year ahead! Jonathan Cruz Family Life Ministry Marian Cenacle To prepare for the holy season, the first activity organised was a morning of Recollection with Fr. Luciano Felloni as spiritual guide. This Nov. 24th activity provided us league members the opportunity to appreciate the relevance of Jesus birth a long time ago to the stories of our lives today. On the 4th of Dec, a group of ladies formed the Packing Team to take charge of filling up 1,000 Christmas food bags. Milk, sardines, luncheon meat, a pack of bihon, sugar rice, comb/ scissors Kits and rosary bracelets were stuffed in bags. This year s all purpose bags were sponsored by Rita Optical. Needy families of Makati, the maintenance crew of the Parish, the Priests outreach projects, the medical clinic regular patients and the CWL scholars were the recipients of the bags. Distribution took place on Saturday, dec 5. The Parish quadrangle was filled with eager CWL ladies who efficiently Christmas at SSAP Catholic Women s League (CWL) distributed the bags to happy families. On a later date, the scholars were treated to a Potluck merienda and gift giving after the CWL ladies watched the students Christmas show. To wish each one a Merry Christmas in a festive mood, the CWL ladies celebrated with a party at the residence of J net. Fr. Reu officiated at Mass soon followed by exchange of greetings, games, carolers, exchange gifts and dinnertime. What capped the events list was the preparation of the altar, the Church and the beautiful Belen. From the silence of the Advent Recollection, to the setting up of the manger, our hearts were gazed at the remembrance of the birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ. J net B. Zulueta 6 7

Christmas is a time of tradition. Our outreach program started with a celebration of the Holy Mass by Fr. Reu Jose C. Galoy, our beloved parish priest. The Makati City Jail Choir rendered many heart warming song numbers that really touched us; after which the SSAP employees interacted with the inmates. Tears and laughters were shared with inmates as we listened to their stories. Simple breakfast and small tokens were given to them afterwards. In the afternoon, the Christmas Party celebration was led by the OFM Pastoral Team. The SSAP staff prepared a short program of song and dance numbers. The SSAP and Convento staff including the Collectoras, CWC, CWL, CCD and Thrift Shop were overjoyed with the fun games, gift giving and raffles prizes. Belen Salano The great majority of people will go on observing forms that cannot be explained; they will keep Christmas Day with Christmas gifts and Christmas benedictions; they will continue to do it; and some day suddenly wake up and discover why. - G.K. Chesterton There are many wonderful things that Christmas brings. And we are lucky in the Philippines that the sense of Christmas is so strong. But sometimes we wonder - Why Christmas? Why have the masses? There s that cliche phrase - The reason behind the season. And while we will have none of that discussion here, there is the chance to recognize that, usually we do not understand why we do the things that we do. That we have tradition, but maybe there s a lack of history - of an awareness of the beautiful truth that is at the foundation of all these wonderful things. There is so much to learn about Christmas and Catholicism. Saint Paul writes to the Romans, be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God what is good and acceptable and perfect. He just as well may be speaking to us today also. There is a challenge to continue to know and understand what it is we believe in and why we do the things we do. Christmas and the New Year is as a time as any to make progress in that endeavor. 7 Parish Bulletin January 10, 2016 Jesus blessed the children and showed his disciples what it means to be humble and dependent on God. That truth is clearly on display on Christmas day at the paediatric ward of PGH. That sounds grotesque and maybe downright offensive - to say that the children in the hospital are blessed and loved by God. Some will scold you for making that kind of statement. What s the point of visiting these suffering children? We cannot help them all or save them all. You spend some time with them and then go and return to your own safety and comfort. But that s not true. Christmas is not like that. Jesus is not like that. On that first Christmas, when Jesus was born and became flesh, he entered into our pain and suffering. He did not take our hurt away, but he stepped in and held our hands. He stood by the dying girl. He raised up the widow s son. Suffering does not disappear but is transformed through Jesus and Christmas. And this is what our ministry brings. Not just relief but compassion. The hope that we can be with those who suffer just as Christ was with those who suffer. And this is not just during Christmas because Jesus is always coming - not just in December. Javier Gomez Hospital Ministry Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. (Matt 18:3) The Social Services Ministries The Prison Ministry is a ministry that is hard to sell. It is easy to fall prey to human judgement and brush off any sort of aid or outreach to jail inmates. Be it in the light of fear in dealing with them or in the justification of why should I help people who have done wrong are among the quick feelings that come to mind whenever we speak of it. A lot of the inmates are living in very difficult situations. This is why Jesus calls us to participate in this ministry. For us to make them feel less neglected: to make them feel part of our church, to commune with them through the mass, to inculcate doctrine through the catechism classes and to add a little more value into their lives through our delivery of social events. Last Dec. 24, 2015, we were fortunate enough to donate and share a simple Noche Buena with the inmates by donating 25 lechons and 40 lechon manoks, as well as 1200 Coke bottles and other toiletries and necessities. A mass was said by Fr. Reu and a small group sharing. I am certain that the inmates saw the face of Jesus through the efforts of the SSAP Prison Ministry and hopefully we too can see the image of God thru them in more of the activities lined up in 2016 for them. RJ Limpo Prison Ministry When I was in prison did you visit me? (Matt 25) Order of Franciscan Seculars (OFS) & Friendship Home Ministry The Parishioners of Santuario de San Antonio include many wonderful ways in their observance of Christmas.
