1 November 22, 2015 Solemnity of Christ the King Year of the Poor - Mercy and Compassion Forbes Park, Makati Koro Ilustrado Shines in South Korea Koro Ilustrado, currently part of the Music Ministry of the SSAP, recently achieved new heights in choral singing at the 11th Busan Choral Festival & Competition held on October 14-17, 2015 in Busan, South Korea. The allmale choir led by the Philippine Madrigal Singers alumni Edmund and Anna Piquero were bestowed Silver and Bronze Awards in the Classical Equal Voices and Pop/ Acapella categories, respectively, last October 17, 2015 at the conclusion of the aforementioned international choral festival. They also bagged the Special Judge Prize for soul-uplifting and inspiring performances during the competitions. Anna, Koro Ilustrado s conductor, was awarded Best Conductor and went on to conduct the festival choir. Koro Ilustrado is currently one of the top all-male choirs in the country. They have participated in numerous local and international choral competitions and performed in numerous concerts including a benefit concert last year held here in SSAP main church. Just also this July 2015, they placed second in the Folk Song Category at the 2015 Andrea O. Veneracion International Choral Festival mounted by the Cultural Center of the Philippines. KI, as the group is commonly referred to, already recorded two albums under the Jesuit Communications label, namely, the inspirational Sa Iyong Pag-ibig in 2013 and the Christmas album titled Carol of the Bells: A Christmas A Cappella in These two albums brought the music of the group to mainstream when they were awarded the Best Performance by New Group Recording Artists in the 2014 Awit Awards for the song Waka Waka and finalist (winners to be announced) for Best Performance by a Group Recording Artists for the song Krismas Na in the 2015 edition, pitted among the long-established mainstream artists of the country. With the recent achievements of the choir in their firstever out of the country competition in South Korea, the members sincerely express their gratitude for the support and generosity of SSAP. The Parish has been the choir s home since 2009 where they regularly serve in the 2nd and 4th Saturday Masses. All for the glory of God! N.B. You may acquire their albums at JesCom s Tanging Yaman outlets or shop online. You may also download their songs and albums on itunes. Santuario de San Antonio Parish Office Tel. nos

2 Parish Bulletin SUNDAY GOSPEL REFLECTION by Fr. Baltazar Obico, OFM Solemnity of Christ the King Today s feast of Christ the King was instituted in 1925 by Pius XI when all of Europe had nightmare memories of what they called then, the threat of war, a time of an explosion of hatred, blindness and a torrent of blood that wiped out most of Europe at that time. The swastika, a disfigurement of the cross, was ready to lurch across Germany. Piercing the sound of these ideology hate-filled speeches, the Pope s message of justice, peace and love was lighting a new spark. In initiating this feast, the church wanted to take our worship of Jesus from the privacy of our hearts and to proudly proclaim his public sway as well. II. GOSPEL: The gospel may sound inappropriate; the image of Jesus being indicted by Pilate does not evoke the image of a King. Yet in the course of Pilate s interrogation of Jesus the latter was in majestic command of the interchange. Pilate was at loss everytime Jesus responded to the nature of his kingship. At the crucifixion, the bystanders and one of the criminals executed with Jesus, know what it means to be a king and so they taunt Jesus with the demand that He use His power to save Himself. For Jesus, however, a king is not one who saves himself, but one who saves others. It is in the mocking words of the scoffers and in the inscription put over the cross, that we are faced with the true nature of Jesus kingship. Save yourself and us, is another temptation for Jesus. Just as Jesus had earlier challenged his vocational identity three times and offered him a less painful option, so is Jesus is being invited to save himself. But with His lack of response to the scoffers, Jesus clearly remains steadfast in fulfilling his divine will. He is resolutely committed to God s plan which includes death. Only in the powerlessness of the cross can he demonstrate that authority, 2 ultimately rescuing criminals, scoffers and religious leaders. Refusing the voices of temptation, Jesus defines for us what sort of King he really is. This means Christian faith is not a power game that follows the rules and logic of most power plays we know - retaliation, competition, self-protectiveness and the like. III. WORD: The Kingdom of God here on Earth. 1. Power is service, not for dominion and domination. To be a king is to serve, not to be served. Stories of DAP and PDAF, of short projects and misappropriation, point to the misuse and abuse of power. One aspect of our life that need evangelizing is in the political. We observe that many of us would like to seal off our political life from influences of faith and allegation in the guise of church and state separation. Politics relates to the exercise of power in society. It is a new world here on earth, not in heaven as understood, in the sky above, that is why we don t pray, we go to heaven, instead we pray that God s Kingdom come here on earth Salvation did not mean escaping earth, being indifferent to politics. It is rather living a meaningful life on earth. 2. The Kingdom as an end to power relationship. Relationships based on power are oppressive they are dehumanizing for both oppressor and the oppressed. Sometimes we hear, Ginagamit lang tayo when someone uses somebody, when you treat him like a thing. When the powerful imposes his will on the powerless. The latter becomes less free, less responsible, less of a creature. The oppressor, likewise demeans, lording it over. I observed this paradigm operating within our parish setting; parish leaders sowing fear among parish workers as they find their servant-leaders more to be feared than love and respected. 3. The Kingdom is offered to all, it is not only for the friars but for all believers regardless of their church affiliation, membership and religious sentiments. Our understanding of our vocation is only within the parameters of the Church and hence we are preoccupied with dogmas and doctrines, rites and rituals that separates us from other people of goodwill. We need to situate His vocation within the universal context of the Kingdom of God. Hence we are willing to set aside doctrine and ritual differences in order to work with everyone in shaping the Kingdom of God where there is justice, peace and love. RANDOM THOUGHTS Voices from yesterday and today By: Peachy Maramba ST. CATHERINE ZOE LABOURE: Originator of Miraculous Medal November 28 The name Catherine implies a hard worker and that is what Catherine L. was. She was born on 2 May 1806 of Pierre Laboure, a French farmer, and his wife. Ever since she was a child named Zoe and her mother Madeleine Louis Gontard who died when she was only eight years old she has had to work hard from managing not only the family farm in Burgundy, Breton but attending to her sixteen brothers and sisters! Thus she was the only one of her family that did not go to school. Yet in all of these she managed to find time to walk a mile and a half to go to church in the next village and visit the sick. It was not till she was 24 years old that she was able to fulfill her desire to have a religious vocation. She became a novice in 1830 taking the name Catherine in the convent founded by St. Vincent de Paul called the Sisters or Daughters of Charity in Paris. Supernatural apparitions by the Blessed Mother appeared to Catherine. The Blessed Mother told Catherine her mission: she was to have a medal made following the image she would give her: the Blessed Virgin standing on a white globe signifying Earth, her feet crushing the head of a serpent with her hands outstretched to all who ask her turn to page 3

3 Random Thoughts...from page 2 assistance. Dazzling rays of light stream from the stones on the rings on each of her fingers. (Mary explained that these are the symbols of the graces she gives to those who ask for them assuring us that no one who seeks her intercession will be left unaided). There was an oval frame around the Virgin Mary with these golden letters along the outer edges: Oh, Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. When the tableau turned, the reverse side showed a large letter M with a bar through it and a cross over it. Beneath the M were the two hearts of Jesus and Mary. The cross of Jesus was crowned with thorns. The one of Mary was pierced by a sword. Then a voice told her, Take this image and have it made into a medal. All who wear it will be blessed and filled with grace through the protection of the Virgin Mary especially if they wear it around the neck. Our Lady told Catherine that she wanted people to develop a devotion to the Immaculate Conception (in anticipation of the declaration of her dogma on December 8, 1854) and the medal was to be the means to this end. As promised a great number of healings, changes of heart, favors and miraculous events were reported by those wearing the medal. The medal originally called the Medal of the Immaculate Conception began to be called the Miraculous Medal and its devotion became one of the most popular traditions in the Catholic Church. Through all of this Catherine remained in the background receiving no recognition. She died peacefully on December 31, 1876 at the age of seventy. She was canonized on July 27, 1947 by Pope Pius XII. Her perfectly preserved body is encased in glass beneath the side altar at 140 Rue du Bac, Paris. The feast of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal (an Optional Memorial) is celebrated with great solemnity on November 27. St. Catherine Laboure s feast is celebrated on the very next day, November 28. Let us always remember to thank Mary for her gift to us. The Medal is a symbol of Mary s love and a means for those who truly love Mary to show that love. Frank Palombo A Solution to a Troubled Marriage Not long ago when couples walked down the aisle, the wedding promise, for better or for worse,... until death do us part was taken seriously and ingrained in their minds. Divorce was never an option, even in rough times. Today, an ideal marriage, however, seems to be an unreachable goal with countless broken marriages. The word divorce has become attractive and even commendable. Some church members are even tempted to soften Christian teachings on marriage and the family. Married couples are searching for a solution to a troubled marriage. And what is it? It is to turn to our Father God. All of us need Him. When marriage is hard, we need Him even more. He created marriage, and He knows that it can be difficult. He will help us; He will never leave us alone; He loves us! We also have to do our part to open ourselves to His grace. It means that since all of us are capable of committing sin, we need to repent and to ask for His forgiveness in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. This way, we get healed, we are showered with graces, and we allow the Holy Spirit to live in us. Frank and Jean Palombo are the parents of ten children. Early in their marriage, Jean did not want any children and had left the faith. However, she returned to the faith after witnessing the Christian love of a missionary couple who were raising four children. Frank, a firefighter, died in response to the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York City. Jean forgave the terrorists The ABC s of Catholic Doctrine by Lianne Tiu November 22, 2015 and found consolation in her children. She herself died several years later of cancer. Their youngest child was raised by her many siblings, while their oldest son is about to be ordained a priest. Despite the challenges of married life and family life, Frank and Jean Palombo were granted the grace to love selflessly to the end first by repenting, then by receiving and believing in the Good News. Their faith and examples should give us hope that it is possible to be faithful to our marital commitments. As long as we turn to God and open ourselves to His grace, it is possible to love... till death do us part. 4 Parish Bulletin 7 November 2015 Dear SSAP Parishioners, Warm greetings from the Continuing Catholic Development (CCD) Ministry! As the holiday season is fast approaching, we invite you to be part of a meaningful Christmas by donating to the annual Light a Parol 2015 fundraising project. A parol is a traditional Filipino Christmas ornament, a five pointed star lantern representing the Star of Bethlehem that guided the Three Wise Men on their way to baby Jesus. How can you help? Each Parol that you purchase will represent a gift from you. With your generous donation, we hope to fill the San Antonio Parish Church with parols to welcome our Savior by Christmas Eve. Each parol will carry the donor s name and hung beautifully in the church complemented by the elegant decor courtesy of Rustan s Flower Shop. The Light a Parol Donors List will be published weekly in the Parish Bulletin. Pledge forms are available at the CCD and parish offices and your donations can be given anytime to the CCD or SSAP parish office. Official receipts will be issued and donations will be accepted until December 23. Now on its 21st year, this project has been the only channel of CCD to raise funds for the Franciscan Missions and various charitable organizations that our young CCD students participate in as well as special projects during different times of the year. Through these outreach programs, the youth are able to demonstrate their faith in action. Please join us for the Light a Parol 2015 official lighting event on Sunday, Nov. 29 during the 6:00PM mass at the Santuario de San Antonio main church. For more information, please contact Leah at (02) or , or ccd.office.ssap@gmail.com. Hoping for your kind support this year. You will surely make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate.
