The 5 Talent Academy is a group of like-minded pastors and laity across the Virginia Conference who are committed to learning the tools and techniques to have healthy, fruitful congregations. As a member of this community, you will learn new ways to increase worship attendance, professions of faith, faith development, ministry to the poor, and stewardship. There is no cost to your church to join the 5 Talent Academy, just a commitment to grow in fruitfulness and multiplication of ministries centering on worship, mission, discipleship, evangelism and stewardship. The 5 Talent Academy can help you achieve your church goals by giving you access to inspiring leaders, providing a venue to brainstorm concepts with peers, and offering you resources to help your church multiply its God-given talents. Consider becoming a member of the Academy today. For more information about the 5 Talent Academy, please visit vaumc.org/5talent We thank you for attending today s worship event. Please be sure to fill out your event evaluation form found here in your packet. Your feedback helps us continue to improve our events. We also hope that you will mark your calendars for our next teaching event. This October we are pleased to welcome Andy Crouch to the Virginia Conference for a day we are calling: Equipping People for Ministry Outside the Walls of the Church. It is not too early to start thinking about who from your congregation should be in attendance this October!

5 Talent Academy Virginia Conference, UMC March 8, 2016 Barbara Day Miller The POWR Model Planning: a conversation with the biblical text The worship planning team meets with the preacher and music leader for conversation around the theme of the biblical texts assigned for the service. Brainstorming suggestions of hymns, prayers, visuals, special music, and needed personnel. Ordering: decisions and details The meeting centers on the order and logistics of the service and on final selection of hymns and songs. This step includes training of readers, deacons and servers, and any special rehearsals of musicians, dancers, etc. Worshipping: the work of all the people The planning team assists in pre-service preparation and in the facilitation of the worship service. Reflecting: a conversation after worship. The team meets to reflect on the service. How did our preparation make space for the Spirit of God? What might have hindered that? In what ways did the training of leadership (readers, ministers of hospitality, musicians, etc.) contribute to the worship of God? 9 The Fourth Sunday of Easter, yr. C: Acts 2: :42 They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 2:43 Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. 2:44 All who believed were together and had all things in common; 2:45 they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. 2:46 Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, 2:47 praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved. Psalm 23 23:1 The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want. 23:2 He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters; 23:3 he restores my soul. He leads me in right paths for his name's sake. 23:4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff-- they comfort me. 23:5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 23:6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD my whole life long. 1 Peter 2: :19 For it is a credit to you if, being aware of God, you endure pain while suffering unjustly. 2:20 If you endure when you are beaten for doing wrong, what credit is that? But if you endure when you do right and suffer for it, you have God's approval. 2:21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you should follow in his steps. 2:22 "He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth." 2:23 When he was abused, he did not return abuse; when he suffered, he did not threaten; but he entrusted himself to the one who judges justly. 2:24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that, free from sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. 2:25 For you were going astray like sheep, but now you have returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls. John 10: :1 Very truly, I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by another way is a thief and a bandit. 10:2 The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. 10:3 The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 10:4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. 10:5 They will not follow a stranger, but they will run from him because they do not know the voice of strangers." 10:6 Jesus used this figure of speech with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them.

10:7 So again Jesus said to them, "Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. 10:8 All who came before me are thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not listen to them. 10:9 I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly." Liturgical Season: Lectionary (or preaching) Texts: Planning Phase 1: Listening to the text; seeing the text 1. What words and phrases do you hear when you read the texts aloud? What images and themes are evoked? What surprises you? 2. What emotions are generated by these readings? How do you feel (comforted, joyous, concerned, angry)? 3. What do the themes and images look, sound and feel like (bright, dark, loud, lonely, smooth, jagged, etc.)? 4. What other senses are engaged by this text? 5. How might we understand these images and themes in the context of the liturgical season? In the context of our congregation? Phase Two: Concrete Ideas 1. What sounds do you hear in worship this day (Is the music lively? contemplative? festive? What words and phrases from hymns and songs come to mind?) 2. What gestures and movements are summoned by our reading of the texts? A solemn procession? Dance? 3. How will the text be read? Multiple voices? From what place? 4. What visual expressions are suggested by the texts? Banners? An arrangement at the entrance? In front of the altar? How will we arrange the space in which we worship?

Ordering Option 1: Categories Option 1 clusters the suggestions according to the broad elements of the service: word, music, movement and visual expression. It will help gather many ideas, but resists putting them immediately into a linear order. This plan works well if you want to generate ideas for an entire season or if you want to encourage multiple suggestions in each category. Texts Music Presenting scripture Leading prayers Hymns and songs Music by the choir/s, praise team Instrumental music Service music: psalms, prayers, responses, communion setting Movement and gesture Processions Dance Other (particular seasonal rituals; e.g., lighting the Advent wreath) Visuals/media Seasonal paraments Flower arrangements Other designs or arrangements (entrance table, windows, etc) Banners Video/projected art Other Option 2: the ordo

Option 2 places the multiple suggestions within the general order of the service. This option for organizing the planning notes works well if the group is engaged in learning about the ordo and the flow of the worship service, or if the ideas are centering around a particular part of the service; for example, a seasonal procession or a renewal of baptism in response to the Word. Gathering to Praise God How do we welcome the community into sacred time and space? How do we acknowledge that God is with us? How do we orient ourselves to be open to God and neighbor? (Ringing bells, silence, meditative prayer, invocation, passing of the peace, song, prayer, movement etc.) Hearing God s Word How do we open our hearts to God s Word among us? What will make these texts come alive? How does the whole congregation participate in this part of the service? Celebrating at the Table/Responding in Faith How do we respond to what we have heard? How is our gathering at the Table informed by what we have experienced? How can we create space for the congregation to respond? What does this response look like? (prayer, altar call, holy communion, naming experience, singing, offering, thanksgiving, lament, silence, dance.) Sending the Church into the World What has God s Word called us to do? What have we promised through our response? Have we been comforted, empowered, or challenged? What blessing does the community need to hear now? How might we think about the world to which we are sent? How does our participation in the global church affect our understanding of our mission and calling?

1) Beginning with the end in mind Peer Group Worksheet Worship Event, March 8, 2016 Barbara Day Miller suggests these questions to guide a reflective conversation among worship team members after worship... How did our preparation make space for the Spirit of God? What might have hindered that? In what ways did the training of leadership (readers, ministers of hospitality, musicians, etc.) contribute to the worship of God? (BDMiller Handout Page 1.) Do these questions make sense to you? Are there some questions you would add? What does/might your team do with the responses to these questions as you prepare for your next worship service(s)? Do you currently have a practice of reflection on previous worship services? If so, how can this process be improved? If not, where/how can you carve space for this important reflection? 2) Evaluating current practices How would you evaluate your current process? What is working? What could work better? Did you hear anything this morning that could improve what you are currently doing? 3) Putting together a plan If the first step is to gather the right people, who are you thinking about at your own church who could/should be part of this team? What gifts could they bring? How will you train them in this process? What resources do you need to gather to assist with this? If you don t regularly participate in planning worship, what can you take home from today s session to help you engage in worship more fully? Have you gained a new appreciation for the task of worship planning?

Additional Worship Resources Recommendations from our Team Hoyt Hickman, Don Saliers, Laurence Stookey, and James White, The New Handbook of the Christian Year Great resources for worship planning based on the liturgical year. Includes orders of worship, readings with multiple parts, prayers, hymn suggestions, and more. David L. Bartlett and Barbara Brown Taylor, Editors, Feasting on the Word Lectionarybased Scripture Commentaries. Includes multiple perspectives on every Scripture passage that is covered in the Revised Common Lectionary. Kim Long, Feasting on the Word Worship Companion Provides various liturgical pieces (call to worship, prayers, etc.) for weekly worship based on the Revised Common Lectionary. Cynthia Jarvis and E. Elizabeth Johnson, Editors, Feasting on the Gospels - Commentary in the style of Feasting on the Word that covers every passage in the four gospels. Adam Hamilton Unleashing the Word Solid instruction on preaching and worship, including how to plan sermons and make the biggest impact on hearers/worshipers. Creative videos and skits for use in worship. Interviews with brilliant Christian teachers/scholars and creative videos for use in worship. These videos are artistically done and thought provoking. Articles and blog posts for helping you think about how you do worship. Other Ideas: Use your favorite book on mission/theology/discipleship as inspiration for a sermon series. Take some time to think about what Scripture is essential to that book, and then plan a sermon series based on that Scripture. Once you ve selected your Scriptures, use the process we learned today to help you build the rest of the service, allowing the book to provide examples and ideas for your planning. But, remember to make sure your worship service is built around the Scripture passages you select rather than being built around the book itself this is worship, not a book report, and the book is a tool to help you point people back to Scripture (and through Scripture, to God).

5 Talent Academy Covenant We (name of church) enter into this covenant along with other churches committed to the 5 Talent Academy to signify our commitment to being more faithful and fruitful as described in the parable of the talents. 14 For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property. 15 To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. 16 He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. 17 So also he who had the two talents made two talents more. 18 But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master's money. 19 Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. 20 And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more. 21 His master said to him, Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master. 22 And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, Master, you delivered to me two talents; here I have made two talents more. 23 His master said to him, Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master. (Matthew 25:14-23, ESV) Within the three year period from the date signed below we will undertake the prayer, training, coaching and focus necessary to achieve the following goals: Worship - Average worship attendance (AWA) will increase by % annually Evangelism Professions of Faith will represent % of AWA Faith Development Small Group participation will represent % of AWA Engage in Mission and Ministry with the Poor- Members serving in hands on ministry will be % of AWA; Giving in support of ministry with the poor will be % of annual operational budget Stewardship Tithes and Offerings will increase % annually In addition, we will prayerfully pursue a plan to plant or partner in planting a new faith community within the next five years. In order to accomplish these goals we will: Attend all 5 Talent Academy events over the next three years Develop and implement a plan to meet the above goals Provide annual reporting on all five goals areas at our yearly charge conference Participate fully in appropriate peer learning groups to accelerate results We hereby make our commitment, trusting in the grace of God to give us the will and the strength to keep this covenant.
