As a member of this community, you will learn new ways to increase worship attendance, professions of faith, faith development, ministry to the poor, and stewardship. There is no cost to your church to join the 5 Talent Academy, just a commitment to grow in fruitfulness and multiplication of ministries centering on worship, mission, discipleship, evangelism and stewardship. The 5 Talent Academy can help you achieve your church goals by giving you access to inspiring leaders, providing a venue to brainstorm concepts with peers, and offering you resources to help your church multiply its God given talents. Consider becoming a member of the Academy today. For more information about the 5 Talent Academy, please visit vaumc.org/5talent Today s keynote speaker is Jim Harnish The Rev. Dr. James A. 2 Today we will hear a testimony from Rev. Seonyoung Kim, York River District Superintendent Seonyoung Kim was born and raised in South Korea. She received her B.S. in Physics from Sookmyung Women's University in Seoul and her M.Div. from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington D.C. Before being called to serve as District Superintendent of the York River District in 2014 she pastored seven churches in the Virginia Conference. During her time in South Korea she had a remarkable experience in small group Christian community that greatly influenced her faith development. Today s panelists come from churches here in our Virginia Conference. Rev. Jennifer Coffey: Rev. Jennifer Coffey is in her 6th year as the Associate Pastor and Minister of Spiritual Formation at Centreville UMC. Located in Northern Virginia, Centreville UMC is a large church with a vision to worship, grow and serve together. As Minister of Spiritual Formation, Rev. Coffey works with the small group ministry, strengthening existing and developing new opportunities for people to connect with God and others in meaningful ways. Rev. Tod Schlechty: Todd Schlechty began his pastoral ministry in He served as the children s pastor of a church in Lexington, Kentucky; the lead pastor of a transformative urban church in Norfolk, Virginia; the associate pastor of a thriving suburban church in Fairfax Station, Virginia; and as the lead pastor of a large downtown church in the Shenandoah Valley. Todd s passion is to communicate the life changing message of Jesus Christ to those who need hope. It is this passion that led Todd to return to Northern Virginia in July 2009 to plant a new church called Vine Church. Todd is a native of Arlington, Virginia. He is a graduate of Yorktown High School, James Madison University, Asbury Theological Seminary, and Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary where he earned a Doctor of Ministry degree. Todd lives in Vienna, Virginia with his wife, Margaret, and their three children. Rev. Debra Lucas: Debra Lucas is the pastor of St. Peter s UMC in Montpelier, VA. Pastor Debra came to St. Peter's in Her previous appointments included Pastor at Three Oaks Fellowship in the Roanoke District and Associate Pastor at Bon Air United Methodist Church in Richmond. She is a graduate of Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, and Candler School of Theology in Atlanta. Debra and her husband, Boyd, have been married almost 40 years. 4 On the Way to Perfection Making Disciples In the Wesleyan Tradition I am not afraid that the people called Methodist should ever cease to exist either in Europe or America. But I am afraid lest they should only exist as a dead sect, having the form of religion without the power. And this will undoubtedly be the case unless they hold fast the doctrine, spirit and discipline with which they first set out. John Wesley This doctrine (sanctification) is the grand depositum which God has lodged with the people called Methodists; and for the sake of propagating this chiefly God appeared to have raised us up. John Wesley Letter to Robert Carr Brackenbury Talent Academy November 10, 2015 Virginia Conference James A. Harnish, Facilitator 1

5 Begin with Why? Who are you? Why are you here? What do you bring? 2

6 Your Mission The mission of the Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Local churches provide the most significant arena through which disciplemaking occurs. Book of Discipline, 121 Where Are We Going? What is perfection? It means perfect love. It is love excluding sin, love filling the heart, taking up the whole capacity of the soul. --John Wesley, The Scripture Way of Salvation Are you going on to perfection? Do you expect to be made perfect in love in this life? Are you earnestly striving after perfection? 3

11 Peer Group Worksheet Faith Development, November 10, ) On page 5 of the handout from Jim Harnish there are two charts. On the "Relationship Changes" chart, where are you, personally? At what ages/stages of your life have you been in places other than where you are now? Where would you say most people in your church currently are? Where would they place themselves? Pair up with the person next to you to share your responses. 2) As a whole group, share how in your church are people encouraged and equipped to grow in their relationship with Jesus -- to grow in grace. Go around the room with each person briefly sharing one program, ministry, or natural dynamic that specifically helps people grow. Take note of ideas that others share. 3) Back in pairs, looking at the "Spiritual Practices Change As We Grow" chart, share where the Personal Spiritual Disciplines you currently practice place you on the chart in each of the four rows. 4) In the Christian Community portion of the chart, in each of the three rows, circle areas where your church is strong, and put a box around areas that you think your church needs focused improvement. As a whole group, briefly share about a ministry in one of the areas you think your church is strong (a "best practice"). 5) From Seonyoung Kim's preaching, what is one thing that you found personally inspiring or challenging? What next step can you take? 6) What is one thing you can apply in your life and/or church to cultivate growth as disciples of Jesus from each of Jim s sessions? Vital Congregations goal: Disciples Make New Disciples (# of small groups)

13 5 Talent Academy Covenant We (name of church) enter into this covenant along with other churches committed to the 5 Talent Academy to signify our commitment to being more faithful and fruitful as described in the parable of the talents. 14 For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property. 15 To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. 16 He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. 17 So also he who had the two talents made two talents more. 18 But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master's money. 19 Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. 20 And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more. 21 His master said to him, Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master. 22 And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, Master, you delivered to me two talents; here I have made two talents more. 23 His master said to him, Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master. (Matthew 25:14-23, ESV) Within the three year period from the date signed below we will undertake the prayer, training, coaching and focus necessary to achieve the following goals: Worship - Average worship attendance (AWA) will increase by % annually Evangelism Professions of Faith will represent % of AWA Faith Development Small Group participation will represent % of AWA Engage in Mission and Ministry with the Poor- Members serving in hands on ministry will be % of AWA; Giving in support of ministry with the poor will be % of annual operational budget Stewardship Tithes and Offerings will increase % annually In addition, we will prayerfully pursue a plan to plant or partner in planting a new faith community within the next five years. In order to accomplish these goals we will: Attend all 5 Talent Academy events over the next three years Develop and implement a plan to meet the above goals Provide annual reporting on all five goals areas at our yearly charge conference Participate fully in appropriate peer learning groups to accelerate results We hereby make our commitment, trusting in the grace of God to give us the will and the strength to keep this covenant.
