A Gathered Service of Worship

WELCOME TO NEW CITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH We re delighted that you ve joined us this morning for our gathered service of worship. Our community is a collection of people of all ages and professions from a wide variety of spiritual and social backgrounds. We embrace Jesus claims to be true and transformational and the central message of the Bible to be the good news, or gospel, of a God who created us for himself and desires us to live fully as we enjoy relationship with him and each other. The Bible s radical message of grace centers on Jesus and creates a new city comprised of renewed individuals living not for themselves but for the God who redeems. For this reason, New City Presbyterian Church exists to be a community rooted in truth, real in conversation and committed to renewing our lives and our city. As the Lead Pastor at New City, it is my privilege to extend to you an invitation to come be part of the New City Church community and to be astonished, together with us, by the splendor and grace of God. RYAN MCVICAR To all who are spiritually weary and seek rest; to all who mourn and long for comfort; to all who struggle and desire victory; to all who sin and need a savior; to all who are strangers and want fellowship; to all who hunger and thirst after righteousness; to whoever will come - this church opens wide her doors and offers you welcome in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. 1

Order for the Public Worship of God WORD ON WORSHIP July 15, 2018 The True Worship of God In the apostle Paul s inspired description of worship in Romans 12:1-2, he presents three crucial elements of the true worship of God. First, worship has been initiated by God as He chose to reveal himself to humanity ever since creation; His mercies are abounding throughout the history of His people, they are renewed daily for us to enjoy, and they are most climatically displayed for us in the cross of Christ, apart from which worship is impossible. Secondly, as a response to such mercies, worship requires offering God all of our being physicality, mentality, and spirituality in such a way that He allows us to know Him better and know of His work, as He increases our faith and conforms us to the character of Christ. Lastly, the way by which we become true worshipers (or are transformed ) is by the Holy Spirit s work of renewing our mind in light of God s true Word. This is a daily spiritual battle in which we are unlearning the ways of the old man and learning the ways of the new; learning the truth, recognizing lies and replacing them with truth, and proclaiming this truth as we go on living lives of true worship. Oh come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker! For he is our God,and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts, as at Meribah, as on the day at Massah in the wilderness, when your fathers put me to the test and put me to the proof, though they had seen my work. For forty years I loathed that generation and said, They are a people who go astray in their heart, and they have not known my ways. Therefore I swore in my wrath, They shall not enter my rest. Psalm 95 2

WELCOME & PREPARATION PRELUDE Here I Am To Worship (Hughes, 2001) C TO WORSHIP HYMN OF AWE How Deep The Father s Love For Us (Townend, 1995) How deep the Father s love for us. How vast beyond all measure That He would give His only Son to make a wretch His treasure How great the pain of searing loss the Father turns His face away As wounds which mar the chosen One Bring many sons to glory Behold the Man upon a cross, my guilt upon His shoulders Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice Call out among the scoffers It was my sin that held Him there Until it was accomplished His dying breath has brought me life I know that it is finished I will not boast in anything, no gifts, no powr s, no wisdom But I will boast in Jesus Christ His death and resurrection Why should I gain from His reward? I cannot give an answer But this I know with all my heart His wounds have paid my ransom 3 Please stand

GOD S TITHES & OUR OFFERINGS I Can Do All Things (Fee/Balltzglier, 2018) Three year olds through 3rd graders are welcome to attend Kids Bible Time classes during the sermon. PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION THE PROCLAMATION OF GOD S WORD 2 Samuel 6 (ESV) READER 1 David again gathered all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand. 2 And David arose and went with all the people who were with him from Baalejudah to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the name of the Lord of hosts who sits enthroned on the cherubim. 3 And they carried the ark of God on a new cart and brought it out of the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. And Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, were driving the new cart, 4 with the ark of God, and Ahio went before the ark. 5 And David and all the house of Israel were celebrating before the Lord, with songs and lyres and harps and tambourines and castanets and cymbals. 6 And when they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah put out his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen stumbled. 7 And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah, and God struck him down there because of his error, and he died there beside the ark of God. 8 And David was angry because the Lord had broken out against Uzzah. And that place is called Perez-uzzah to this day. 9 And David was afraid of the Lord that day, and he said, How can the ark of the Lord come to me? 10 So David was not willing to take the ark of the Lord into the city of David. But David took it aside to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite. 11 And the ark of the Lord remained in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite three months, and the Lord blessed Obed-edom and all his household. 12 And it was told King David, The Lord has blessed the household of Obededom and all that belongs to him, because of the ark of God. So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom to the city of David with rejoicing. 13 And when those who bore the ark of the Lord had gone six steps, he sacrificed an ox and a fattened animal. 14 And David danced before the Lord with all his might. And David was wearing a linen ephod. 15 So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with shouting and with the sound of the horn. 16 As the ark of the Lord came into the city of David, Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David leaping and dancing 5

READER before the Lord, and she despised him in her heart. 17 And they brought in the ark of the Lord and set it in its place, inside the tent that David had pitched for it. And David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord. 18 And when David had finished offering the burnt offerings and the peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord of hosts 19 and distributed among all the people, the whole multitude of Israel, both men and women, a cake of bread, a portion of meat, and a cake of raisins to each one. Then all the people departed, each to his house. 20 And David returned to bless his household. But Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David and said, How the king of Israel honored himself today, uncovering himself today before the eyes of his servants female servants, as one of the vulgar fellows shamelessly uncovers himself! 21 And David said to Michal, It was before the Lord, who chose me above your father and above all his house, to appoint me as prince over Israel, the people of the Lord and I will celebrate before the Lord. 22 I will make myself yet more contemptible than this, and I will be abased in your eyes. But by the female servants of whom you have spoken, by them I shall be held in honor. 23 And Michal the daughter of Saul had no child to the day of her death. MINISTER All people are like grass, and all their beauty is like the flowers of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, but the Word of our God stands forever. 6

TITLE: The Dangerous Desire for a God-centered Life Ryan McVicar (notes and thoughts) Sermon Discussion Questions 1. What did the Ark of God represent? Why did David want to bring the Ark to Jerusalem and why does this matter? 2. Discuss vs What is underneath this traumatic event? In what ways do we display the heart and actions of Uzzah? 3. Talk about a time when you felt some of the emotions that David experienced in vs Why was David angry? Who was he angry at? 4. In vs. 16, David was filled with joy, leaping and dancing. Why? 5. Spend some time discussing the ways that Jesus Christ fulfilled everything the ark pointed to, and why we have even more reason to rejoice than David did. 7 Please stand

HYMN OF RESPONSE Hast Thou Heard Him (Rowan, 1879) Hast thou heard Him, seen Him, known Him? Is not thine a captured heart? Chief among ten thousand own Him; Joyful choose the better part. Captivated by His beauty, Worthy tribute haste to bring; Let His peerless worth constrain thee, Crown Him now unrivaled King. What can strip the seeming beauty From the idols of the earth? Not a sense of right or duty, But the sight of peerless worth. Tis that look that melted Peter, Tis that face that Stephen saw, Tis that heart that wept with Mary, Can alone from idols draw. CELEBRATION OF HOLY COMMUNION PRAYER OF CONSECRATION INVITATION TO THE LORD S TABLE Communion, also known as the Lord s Supper, has always been a common, shared, joyous family meal. This meal is for those who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ; for those Baptized Christians who trust in His once-for-all sacrificial death upon the cross for their salvation. When we celebrate this feast, we commune with the risen Lord Jesus who stands as our host to offer spiritual nourishment, renewal and life. We also commune with one another, participating together in the reconciling grace of God. We warmly welcome to the table all who trust in Jesus and who have publicly professed their faith as members of a Christian congregation. At New City, we ask our children not to take communion until they have met with the elders to share of their faith in Christ, although all children are invited to come forward to receive a word of encouragement. If you are not a Christian, we encourage you to spend this time reflecting on the prayers printed on the following page in the hopes that a relationship with Jesus and membership in His Church may be considered. Jesus is truly and spiritually present and stands ready to feed you. Come hungry. Come thirsty. Come ready to be filled. 8

PRAYER OF CONFESSION OF SINS Holy and loving God, we come to you convicted by your Word and led by your Spirit to confess our sin. At times we approach you carelessly or out of habit, and do not realize that the God of the heavens desires to engage us deeply. Move our affections and our minds towards you, renew us according to your steadfast love, and have mercy on us in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS Hebrews 10:12-14 MINISTER 12 But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, [...] 14 For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified. WORDS OF INSTITUTION AND BREAKING OF BREAD INDIVIDUAL PRAYERS YOU CAN PRAY DURING COMMUNION Prayer for Those Searching for the Truth Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth and the life. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen. Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you, I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared to hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as my Savior. Amen. Prayer of Humble Access I do not presume to come to this your table, O merciful Lord, trusting in my own goodness, but only in your righteousness credited to me. I am not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord whose manner is always to show mercy. Grant me, therefore, O Lord, the grace to commune now with Christ by faith, that I may evermore live in him and he in me. Amen. 9

HYMN AT THE TABLE The Blood Of Jesus (Czechowicz/Hendershot, 2013) What fountain s unrelenting stream Is mighty as a flood? With force and care it ever cleans Tis Jesus precious blood What river carries off my sins? What balm can heal my wounds? There is no tide or medicine But Jesus blood alone All the guilty are forgiven All the captives are made clean and then set free Praise the Lord of power and mercy The blood of Jesus, shed for me What treasure, land or salary Could pay the debt I owe? The only valid currency Is Jesus blood that flows Who pleads for me with His own blood And then my soul renews? He is my advocate and judge And served my sentence, too What theme shall now my soul employ In song before my God? A melody of love and joy And thanks for Jesus blood HYMN OF FAITH Be Thou My Vision (Byrne, 1905) Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art Thou my best thought by day or by night Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light Be Thou my Wisdom, And Thou my true Word I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord Thou my great Father and I Thy true son Thou in me dwelling and I with Thee one Riches I heed not, Nor man s empty praise Thou my inheritance now and always Thou and Thou only, first in my heart High King of heaven, My Treasure Thou art 10 Please stand

Please visit our website at: NEWCITYPC.ORG Thank you for being part of our service today. New City Royal Oak seeks to be a catalyst for a churchplanting movement throughout the Detroit region comprised of churches working together to establish worshipping communities who are biblically-faithful, gospel-centric, outward-facing and communitydriven. Our vision is to see renewal take place at every level - personally, spiritualy, socially and culturally - renewal that is rooted in the truth of God s Word. CONTACT US AT: OFFICE 301 W. 4th Street, Ste. LL 75 WORSHIP 709 N. Washington Ave. Royal Oak, MI (248) INFO@NEWCITYPC.ORG WHAT S IN A NAME? Isn t it exciting to name something or someone? Names have meaning. Perhaps this is why we instinctively ask, Do you have names picked out yet when we first hear the news of a friend or loved one who is expecting a baby. It is also why you had better not dare change the name of a little girl s princess doll or teddy bear! We can only imagine the task entrusted to Adam and Eve to name the animals. Surely they experienced the same struggles that we often face: Does this name really fit? Will it stand the test of time? Is it true to the identity of the person or thing being named? Yes, names are important, but the comforting reality about names, from another perspective, is that they will not determine the ultimate strength, substance, or identity of the object being named. So, as we conversed over the name of our church it became clear that there could be no other! In the end, we realized that we would not have to choose between a name that reflected either our region or our theology. Rather, our name reflects both our region and our theology. Regionally, as you know, one of the better known nicknames for our great city and metro-area is the Renaissance City, which means City of Re-birth or Renewal. It s ironic that one of the most pressing questions being asked right now is how our city can ever be renewed. Theologically, the central claim of the Bible is the good news that Jesus died upon the cross for sinners and secured the salvation of all who place their trust in him alone. The grand biblical vision and hope held out for God s children is their eternal residence in the new city of which we catch a glimpse in the last book of the bible: I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. Revelation 21 It will not be jewels or gold that will make this new city so dazzling. Rather, the presence of God and the joy of forever residing in the city where he will be seen face to face is what will make this the greatest city ever known. For this reason, we are pleased to go by the name of New City.
