A Gathered Service of Worship
WELCOME TO NEW CITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH We re delighted that you ve joined us this morning for our gathered service of worship. Our community is a collection of people of all ages and professions, from a wide variety of spiritual and social backgrounds. We embrace Jesus claims to be true and transformational and the central message of the Bible to be the good news, or gospel, of a God who created us for himself and desires us to live fully as we enjoy relationship with him and with each other. The Bible s radical message of grace centers on Jesus and creates a new city comprised of renewed individuals living not for themselves but for the God who redeems. For this reason, New City Presbyterian Church exists to be a community rooted in truth, real in conversation, and committed to renewing our lives and our city. As the Senior Pastor at New City, it is my privilege to extend to you an invitation to come be part of the New City Church community and to be astonished, together with us, by the splendor and the grace of God. RYAN MCVICAR To all who are spiritually weary and seek rest; to all who mourn and long for comfort; to all who struggle and desire victory; to all who sin and need forgiveness; to all who are strangers and want fellowship; to all who hunger and thirst after righteousness; to whoever will come - this church opens wide her doors and welcomes you in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. 1
Order for the Public Worship of God November 11, 2018 All true knowledge of God is born out of obedience. John Calvin SILENT REFLECTION Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of divination, and presumption is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has also rejected you [...] 1 Samuel 15:22 In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, being designated by God a high priest Hebrews 5:7-10 2
PRELUDE CALL TO WORSHIP ALL GATHERING HYMN Rejoice Kensrue, 2013 Dead Bird Theology Come and stand before your Maker full of wonder, full of fear Come behold his power and glory, yet with confidence draw near For the one who holds the heavens and commands the stars above Is the God who bends to bless us with an unrelenting love Rejoice, come and lift your hands and Raise your voice, he is worthy of our praise Rejoice, sing the mercies of your King And with trembling, rejoice We are children of the promise, the beloved of the Lord Won with everlasting kindness, bought with sacrificial blood Bringing reconciliation to a world that longs to know The affections of a Father who will never let them go All our sickness, all our sorrows Jesus carried up the hill He has walked this path before us, he is walking with us still Turning tragedy to triumph, turning agony to praise There is blessing in the battle so take heart and stand amazed Rejoice, when you cry to him he hears Your voice, he will wipe away your tears Rejoice, in the midst of suffering He will help you sing THE SACRAMENT OF CHRISTIAN BAPTISM Evelyn Jane Klaser, born April 14th, 2018, daughter of Jacob Brian & Megan Elyse Klaser READER BAPTISMAL READING Isaiah 26:3-4 3 You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. 4 Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock. 3 Please Rise
BAPTISM VOWS PARENTAL VOWS: Do you acknowledge your daughter s need of the cleansing blood of Jesus Christ, and the renewing grace of the Holy Spirit? Do you claim God s covenant promises on behalf of your daughter, and do you look in faith to the Lord Jesus Christ for her salvation, as you have for your own? Do you now unreservedly commit your daughter to God, and promise in humble reliance upon divine grace, that you will endeavor to set before her a godly example, that you will pray with and for her, that you will teach her the doctrines of the Christian faith, and that you will strive, by all the means of God s appointment, to bring her up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord? CONGREGATIONAL VOWS: Will you, as members of New City Church, promise to guide and nurture Evelyn, by word and deed, with love and prayer, encouraging her to know and follow Christ and to be faithful members of his church? ALL COVENANT HYMN Father Long Before Creation Francis Johnson, 2005 The Velvet Eagle Sings Father, long before creation, thou hadst chosen us in love, And that love so deep, so moving, draws us close to Christ above. Still it keeps us, still it keeps us, firmly fixed in Christ alone. Though the world may change its fashion, yet our God is ever the same; His compassion and his covenant, through all ages will remain. God s own children, God s own children, must forever praise his name. God s compassion is my story, is my boasting all the day; Mercy free and never failing, moves my will, directs my way. God so loved us, God so loved us, that his only Son he gave. Loving Father now before thee, we will ever praise thy love, And our songs will sound unceasing, till we reach our home above, Giving glory, giving glory, to our God and to the Lamb. GOD S TITHES & OUR OFFERINGS A Debtor To Mercy Alone Kauflin, 1998 Sovereign Grace Praise * Three-year-olds through 1st graders are welcome to attend Kids Bible Time during the sermon. A parent from each family will be directed to pick up their child(ren) from KBT following the sermon. 4 Please Rise
PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION THE PROCLAMATION OF GOD S WORD Jonah 1:1-16 (ESV) 1 Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, 2 Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, for their evil has come up before me. 3 But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the Lord. 4 But the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship threatened to break up. 5 Then the mariners were afraid, and each cried out to his god. And they hurled the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them. But Jonah had gone down into the inner part of the ship and had lain down and was fast asleep. 6 So the captain came and said to him, What do you mean, you sleeper? Arise, call out to your god! Perhaps the god will give a thought to us, that we may not perish. 7 And they said to one another, Come, let us cast lots, that we may know on whose account this evil has come upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. 8 Then they said to him, Tell us on whose account this evil has come upon us. What is your occupation? And where do you come from? What is your country? And of what people are you? 9 And he said to them, I am a Hebrew, and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land. 10 Then the men were exceedingly afraid and said to him, What is this that you have done! For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them. 11 Then they said to him, What shall we do to you, that the sea may quiet down for us? For the sea grew more and more tempestuous. 12 He said to them, Pick me up and hurl me into the sea; then the sea will quiet down for you, for I know it is because of me that this great tempest has come upon you. 13 Nevertheless, the men rowed hard to get back to dry land, but they could not, for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them. 14 Therefore they called out to the Lord, O Lord, let us not perish for this man s life, and lay not on us innocent blood, for you, O Lord, have done as it pleased you. 15 So they picked up Jonah and hurled him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging. 16 Then the men feared the Lord exceedingly, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows. MINISTER PEOPLE ALL All people are like grass, and all their beauty is like the flowers of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, But the Word of our God stands forever. 5 Please Rise
Sermon Series: renewed Life Jonah & a renewed life (Notes & Thoughts) Ryan McVicar Sermon Discussion Questions 1. Are unbelievers used by Good today to stir up the church to renewed obedience? 2. What does scripture teach about God s presence and knowledge? Look through some verses together and discuss. 3. Is seeing God as the one who controls the elements and the weather an outmoded or old-fashioned, outdated way of perceiving things? How should this affect you daily? 4. Are there circumstances where the use of lots might still be legitimate? (Acts 1:26) Wha conditions would have to be satisfied before such a procedure is used? (1 Corinthians 10:31; Ephesians 4:1, 29; Colossians 3:17). 5. Is it possible for your theology and confession to be orthodox and true, and yet be spiritually immature, backslidden, or even spiritually lost? How can knowledge of God s word stir you up to even greater disobedience and running? Discuss. 6. Talk about the concept that your past obedience or fruitfulness are no substitutes for present obedience. Do you ever fall into this trap? 7. What are the ways you cover up your running from the Lord? 8. Do you delight to see God bless others? Does your heart love the idea of people who are different from, or people who have frustrated or hurt you, experiencing God s grace and being brought into your church family? Please Rise 6
* For parents who have children in Kids Bible Time, please use this time to pick up your child(ren) from their class. ALL HYMN OF RESPONSE Begone Unbelief Newton, 1803 Public Domain Begone unbelief, my Savior is near, and for my relief will surely appear: By faith let me wrestle, with God in the storm And help me my Savior, the faith to adorn, And help me my Savior, the faith to adorn. Though dark be my way, since he is my guide, tis mine to obey, and his to provide; Though cisterns be broken, and creatures all fail, The Word he has spoken will surely prevail, The Word he has spoken will surely prevail. /// Begone unbelief, the Savior is here /// Though cisterns be broken and creatures all fail, The Word he has spoken will surely prevail, The Word he has spoken will surely prevail. Why should I complain, of want or distress, temptation or pain? He told me no less. The heirs of salvation, I know from his word, Through much tribulation must follow their Lord, Through much tribulation must follow their Lord. Since all that I meet will work for my good, the bitter is sweet, the medicine food; Though painful at present, will cease before long, And then, O how glorious, the Conqueror s song, And then, O how glorious, the Conqueror s song! CELEBRATION OF HOLY COMMUNION PRAYER OF CONSECRATION INVITATION TO THE LORD S TABLE Communion also known as the Lord s Supper has always been a common, shared, joyous family meal. This meal is for those who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ; for those Baptized Christians who trust in His once-for-all sacrificial death upon the cross for their salvation. When we celebrate this feast, we commune with the risen Lord Jesus who stands as our host to offer spiritual nourishment, renewal and life. We also commune with one another, participating together in the reconciling grace of God. We warmly welcome to the table all who trust in Jesus and who have publicly professed their faith as members of a Christian congregation. At New City, we ask our children not to take communion until they have met with the elders to share of their faith in Christ, although all children are invited to come forward to receive a word of encouragement. If you are not a Christian, we encourage you to spend this time reflecting on the prayers printed on the following page in the hopes that a relationship with Jesus and membership in His Church may be considered. Jesus is truly and spiritually present and stands ready to feed you. Come hungry. Come thirsty. Come ready to be filled. 7 Please Rise
ALL PRAYER OF CONFESSION OF SINS Sovereign God, we confess that we often talk about you but fail to worship you, or we worship with our lips but fail to obey with our lives, or we obey you dutifully without any joy in our hearts. In other words, we re always finding ways to run away from your face. Holy Spirit, infuse us with such passion for you that our words become worship, our desires grow into obedience, and our lives reveal the joy of being your precious children, Amen. MINISTER DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS Exodus 34:6-7 6 The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, 7 keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin [...] WORDS OF INSTITUTION AND BREAKING OF BREAD INDIVIDUAL PRAYERS YOU CAN PRAY DURING COMMUNION PRAYER FOR THOSE SEARCHING FOR THE TRUTH Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth and the life. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen. PRAYER OF BELIEF Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you, I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared to hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as my Savior. Amen. PRAYER OF HUMBLE ACCESS I do not presume to come to this your table, O merciful Lord, trusting in my own goodness, but only in your righteousness credited to me. I am not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord whose manner is always to show mercy. Grant me, therefore, O Lord, the grace to commune now with Christ by faith, that I may evermore live in him and he in me. Amen. 8 Please Rise

Worship is a communal activity in which we participate together as a church family and is one of the best ways to welcome children into the life of the church. Yet, children are in the process of learning the significance of worship and how to worship. During our nursery and Kids Bible Times, teachers emphasize why we worship and help children learn prayers and songs that are typically part of our services. However, there are ways parents and congregants alike can train our children in the joys of worship. For Parents: Parents have the responsibility and blessing to lead and train children in worship. Living in a culture where children are constantly entertained can make this responsibility difficult. However, consider the tips below to help the process go a bit more smoothly: Tips for Sunday Worship: Worship with rather than beside children. Help your child who can t read by singing the words of the chorus in their ears so they can sing along. Help them follow along in the Bible. Point out words for young or non-readers that are repetitive. Allow children to participate in offering by sharing their allowance.whisper instructions or comments such as, Now is the time when we tell God how great He is. Use a worship notebook where children can draw pictures of what they hear in the scripture passage and sermon or write down thoughts that are meaningful to them. For the Rest of Us: Church is not for adults only. Supporting the children of New City as they grow as worshippers of the Lord is the responsibility of us all. Remember the commitment you made as a church when children were baptized, a commitment to encourage them to become disciples of Christ. Introduce yourself to the child sitting beside you. Make him or her feel welcomed and important. Teaching children how to worship the Lord with reverence and awe is something we can all be excited about doing. What a blessing and privilege is this special endeavor!
