A Gathered Service of Worship

WELCOME TO NEW CITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH We re delighted that you ve joined us this morning for our gathered service of worship. Our community is a collection of people of all ages and professions, from a wide variety of spiritual and social backgrounds. We embrace Jesus claims to be true and transformational and the central message of the Bible to be the good news, or gospel, of a God who created us for himself and desires us to live fully as we enjoy relationship with him and with each other. The Bible s radical message of grace centers on Jesus and creates a new city comprised of renewed individuals living not for themselves but for the God who redeems. For this reason, New City Presbyterian Church exists to be a community rooted in truth, real in conversation, and committed to renewing our lives and our city. As the Senior Pastor at New City, it is my privilege to extend to you an invitation to come be part of the New City Church community and to be astonished, together with us, by the splendor and the grace of God. RYAN MCVICAR To all who are spiritually weary and seek rest; to all who mourn and long for comfort; to all who struggle and desire victory; to all who sin and need forgiveness; to all who are strangers and want fellowship; to all who hunger and thirst after righteousness; to whoever will come - this church opens wide her doors and welcomes you in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. 1

Order for the Public Worship of God November 4, 2018 WORD ON WORSHIP In the apostle Paul s inspired description of worship in Romans 12:1-2, he presents three crucial elements of the true worship of God. First, worship has been initiated by God as He chose to reveal himself to humanity ever since creation; His mercies are abounding throughout the history of His people, they are renewed daily for us to enjoy, and they are most climatically displayed for us in the cross of Christ, apart from which worship is impossible. Secondly, as a response to such mercies, worship requires offering God all of our being physicality, mentality, and spirituality in such a way that He allows us to know Him better and know of His work, as He increases our faith and conforms us to the character of Christ. Lastly, the way by which we become true worshipers (or are transformed ) is by the Holy Spirit s work of renewing our mind in light of God s true Word. This is a daily spiritual battle in which we are unlearning the ways of the old man and learning the ways of the new; learning the truth, recognizing lies and replacing them with truth, and proclaiming this truth as we go on living lives of true worship. SILENT REFLECTION Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. Romans 5:1-5 Trust the past to God s mercy, the present to God s love, and the future to God s providence. St. Augustine of Hippo 2

PRELUDE O Great God Kauflin, 2006 Sovereign Grace Praise CALL TO WORSHIP ALL GATHERING HYMN Blessed Be Your Name Redman, 2002 Thankyou Music Blessed be your name in the land that is plentiful, Where your streams of abundance flow; blessed be your name. And blessed be your name when I m found in the desert place, Though I walk through the wilderness; blessed be your name Every blessing You pour out I ll turn back to praise, And when the darkness closes in, Lord, still I will say: Blessed be the name of the Lord, Blessed be your name. Blessed be the name of the Lord, Blessed be your glorious name! Blessed be your name when the sun s shining down on me, When the world s all as it should be; blessed be your name And blessed be your name on the road marked with suffering, Though there s pain in the offering; blessed be your name. Every blessing You pour out I ll turn back to praise, And when the darkness closes in, Lord, still I will say: You give and take away, You give and take away. My heart will choose to say: Lord, blessed be your name! READER READING FROM THE EPISTLES 1 John 5:3-5 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. 4 For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? 3 Please Rise

PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION THE PROCLAMATION OF GOD S WORD From the book of Habakkuk (ESV) 1 5 Look among the nations, and see; wonder and be astounded. For I am doing a work in your days that you would not believe if told. 6 For behold, I am raising up the Chaldeans, that bitter and hasty nation, who march through the breadth of the earth, to seize dwellings not their own [...] 2 2 And the Lord answered me: Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it. 3 For still the vision awaits its appointed time; it hastens to the end it will not lie. If it seems slow, wait for it; it will surely come; it will not delay. 4 Behold, his soul is puffed up; it is not upright within him, but the righteous shall live by his faith [...] 3 1 A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet, according to Shigionoth. 2 O Lord, I have heard the report of you, and your work, O Lord, do I fear. In the midst of the years revive it; in the midst of the years make it known; in wrath remember mercy. 3 God came from Teman, and the Holy One from Mount Paran. Selah His splendor covered the heavens, and the earth was full of his praise. 4 His brightness was like the light; rays flashed from his hand; and there he veiled his power. 5 Before him went pestilence, and plague followed at his heels. 6 He stood and measured the earth; he looked and shook the nations; then the eternal mountains were scattered; the everlasting hills sank low. 5 Please Rise

His were the everlasting ways. 7 I saw the tents of Cushan in affliction; the curtains of the land of Midian did tremble. 8 Was your wrath against the rivers, O Lord? Was your anger against the rivers, or your indignation against the sea, when you rode on your horses, on your chariot of salvation? 9 You stripped the sheath from your bow, calling for many arrows. Selah You split the earth with rivers. 10 The mountains saw you and writhed; the raging waters swept on; the deep gave forth its voice; it lifted its hands on high. 11 The sun and moon stood still in their place at the light of your arrows as they sped, at the flash of your glittering spear. 12 You marched through the earth in fury; you threshed the nations in anger. 13 You went out for the salvation of your people, for the salvation of your anointed. You crushed the head of the house of the wicked, laying him bare from thigh to neck. Selah 14 You pierced with his own arrows the heads of his warriors, who came like a whirlwind to scatter me, rejoicing as if to devour the poor in secret. 15 You trampled the sea with your horses, the surging of mighty waters. 16 I hear, and my body trembles; my lips quiver at the sound; rottenness enters into my bones; my legs tremble beneath me. Yet I will quietly wait for the day of trouble to come upon people who invade us. 17 Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, 18 yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will take joy in the God of my salvation. 19 God, the Lord, is my strength; he makes my feet like the deer s; he makes me tread on my high places. MINISTER PEOPLE ALL All people are like grass, and all their beauty is like the flowers of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, But the Word of our God stands forever. 6 Please Rise

Sermon Series: renewed Life Walk of Faith (Notes & Thoughts) Nathan Moretto Sermon Discussion Questions 1. What does it mean to walk by faith? How can faith be practiced on a daily basis? 2. How does faith help us face trials and tribulations in life? What is it about faith that makes suffering more manageable? 3. What are some of your responses or recourses to suffering besides being a person of faith? How do you cope, and how what practical ways can you begin applying faith to your circumstances today or this week? Please Rise 7

* For parents who have children in Kids Bible Time, please use this time to pick up your child(ren) from their class. ALL HYMN OF RESPONSE By Faith Getty/Townend, 2009 Thankyou Music By faith we see the hand of God In the light of creation s grand design In the lives of those who prove His faithfulness Who walk by faith and not by sight By faith our fathers roamed the earth With the power of His promise in their hearts Of a holy city built by God s own hand A place where peace and justice reign We will stand as children of the promise We will fix our eyes on Him our soul s reward Till the race is finished and the work is done We ll walk by faith and not by sight By faith the prophets saw a day When the longed-for Messiah would appear With the power to break the chains of sin and death And rise triumphant from the grave By faith the church was called to go In the power of the Spirit to the lost To deliver captives and to preach good news In every corner of the earth CELEBRATION OF HOLY COMMUNION PRAYER OF CONSECRATION INVITATION TO THE LORD S TABLE Communion also known as the Lord s Supper has always been a common, shared, joyous family meal. This meal is for those who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ; for those Baptized Christians who trust in His once-for-all sacrificial death upon the cross for their salvation. When we celebrate this feast, we commune with the risen Lord Jesus who stands as our host to offer spiritual nourishment, renewal and life. We also commune with one another, participating together in the reconciling grace of God. We warmly welcome to the table all who trust in Jesus and who have publicly professed their faith as members of a Christian congregation. At New City, we ask our children not to take communion until they have met with the elders to share of their faith in Christ, although all children are invited to come forward to receive a word of encouragement. If you are not a Christian, we encourage you to spend this time reflecting on the prayers printed on the following page in the hopes that a relationship with Jesus and membership in His Church may be considered. Jesus is truly and spiritually present and stands ready to feed you. Come hungry. Come thirsty. Come ready to be filled. 8 Please Rise

ALL PRAYER OF CONFESSION OF SINS Holy God, shame and guilt flood our hearts as we realize the corrupting power of sin in our lives and its pervasive effect in the world around us. You are holy yet merciful, and have held back judgment for the sake of those who would turn from sin to faith in Christ. We ask for your forgiveness knowing that at the cross you exchanged our sin for righteousness, granting us peace with you. Help us live lives that reflect and extend this peace wherever we go. We pray in Jesus merciful name, Amen. MINISTER DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS Hebrews 10: But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13 waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. 14 For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified. WORDS OF INSTITUTION AND BREAKING OF BREAD INDIVIDUAL PRAYERS YOU CAN PRAY DURING COMMUNION PRAYER FOR THOSE SEARCHING FOR THE TRUTH Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth and the life. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen. PRAYER OF BELIEF Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you, I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared to hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as my Savior. Amen. PRAYER OF HUMBLE ACCESS I do not presume to come to this your table, O merciful Lord, trusting in my own goodness, but only in your righteousness credited to me. I am not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord whose manner is always to show mercy. Grant me, therefore, O Lord, the grace to commune now with Christ by faith, that I may evermore live in him and he in me. Amen. 9 Please Rise

Worship is a communal activity in which we participate together as a church family and is one of the best ways to welcome children into the life of the church. Yet, children are in the process of learning the significance of worship and how to worship. During our nursery and Kids Bible Times, teachers emphasize why we worship and help children learn prayers and songs that are typically part of our services. However, there are ways parents and congregants alike can train our children in the joys of worship. For Parents: Parents have the responsibility and blessing to lead and train children in worship. Living in a culture where children are constantly entertained can make this responsibility difficult. However, consider the tips below to help the process go a bit more smoothly: Tips for Sunday Worship: Worship with rather than beside children. Help your child who can t read by singing the words of the chorus in their ears so they can sing along. Help them follow along in the Bible. Point out words for young or non-readers that are repetitive. Allow children to participate in offering by sharing their allowance.whisper instructions or comments such as, Now is the time when we tell God how great He is. Use a worship notebook where children can draw pictures of what they hear in the scripture passage and sermon or write down thoughts that are meaningful to them. For the Rest of Us: Church is not for adults only. Supporting the children of New City as they grow as worshippers of the Lord is the responsibility of us all. Remember the commitment you made as a church when children were baptized, a commitment to encourage them to become disciples of Christ. Introduce yourself to the child sitting beside you. Make him or her feel welcomed and important. Teaching children how to worship the Lord with reverence and awe is something we can all be excited about doing. What a blessing and privilege is this special endeavor!
