A Gathered Service of Worship

WELCOME TO NEW CITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH We re delighted that you ve joined us this morning for our gathered service of worship. Our community is a collection of people of all ages and professions, from a wide variety of spiritual and social backgrounds. We embrace Jesus claims to be true and transformational and the central message of the Bible to be the good news, or gospel, of a God who created us for himself and desires us to live fully as we enjoy relationship with him and with each other. The Bible s radical message of grace centers on Jesus and creates a new city comprised of renewed individuals living not for themselves but for the God who redeems. For this reason, New City Presbyterian Church exists to be a community rooted in truth, real in conversation, and committed to renewing our lives and our city. As the Senior Pastor at New City, it is my privilege to extend to you an invitation to come be part of the New City Church community and to be astonished, together with us, by the splendor and the grace of God. RYAN MCVICAR To all who are spiritually weary and seek rest; to all who mourn and long for comfort; to all who struggle and desire victory; to all who sin and need forgiveness; to all who are strangers and want fellowship; to all who hunger and thirst after righteousness; to whoever will come - this church opens wide her doors and welcomes you in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. 1

Order for the Public Worship of God September 9, 2018 WORD ON WORSHIP MEDITATION ON GOD S WORD As we begin diving into the Minor Prophets with our new sermon series renewed life, what a loss it would be to hear of how God used these men to point once and again to full redemption and restoration in Christ, and not retain what the Lord will be speaking to us through these texts. Our memory is fragile, and that s why God preserved His Word for us in a format we could come back to frequently; He desires for us to have a regular intake of Scripture, and to store it in our hearts. Meditation on Scripture is a spiritual discipline that allows us to spend a significant time on a short text in such a way that we can think and feel deeply about it. What if you took time each day to prayerfully meditate on the most significant passages we encounter in our Sunday texts, lingering on each passage, spending quality time with each phrase, letting them evoke thoughts and feelings in your mind, praise in your heart, conviction of sin, and leading you towards repentance? Let s make this spiritual discipline a priority in our lives, and may the Holy Spirit use it for the transformation of our minds and for kindling our affections toward our Savior and King, Jesus Christ. SILENT REFLECTION Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. Psalm 1:1-2 The tree of your spiritual life thrives best with meditation because it helps you absorb the water of God s Word. Merely hearing or reading the Bible, for example, can be like a short rainfall on hard ground. Regardless of the amount or intensity of the rain, most runs off and little sinks in. Conversely, meditation opens the soil of the soul and lets the water of God s Word percolate deeply. The result is an extraordinary fruitfulness and spiritual prosperity. Donald Whitney 2

PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION THE PROCLAMATION OF GOD S WORD Daniel 1 (ESV) 1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it. 2 And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with some of the vessels of the house of God. And he brought them to the land of Shinar, to the house of his god, and placed the vessels in the treasury of his god. 3 Then the king commanded Ashpenaz, his chief eunuch, to bring some of the people of Israel, both of the royal family and of the nobility, 4 youths without blemish, of good appearance and skillful in all wisdom, endowed with knowledge, understanding learning, and competent to stand in the king s palace, and to teach them the literature and language of the Chaldeans. 5 The king assigned them a daily portion of the food that the king ate, and of the wine that he drank. They were to be educated for three years, and at the end of that time they were to stand before the king. 6 Among these were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah of the tribe of Judah. 7 And the chief of the eunuchs gave them names: Daniel he called Belteshazzar, Hananiah he called Shadrach, Mishael he called Meshach, and Azariah he called Abednego. 8 But Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself with the king s food, or with the wine that he drank. Therefore he asked the chief of the eunuchs to allow him not to defile himself. 9 And God gave Daniel favor and compassion in the sight of the chief of the eunuchs, 10 and the chief of the eunuchs said to Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who assigned your food and your drink; for why should he see that you were in worse condition than the youths who are of your own age? So you would endanger my head with the king. 11 Then Daniel said to the steward whom the chief of the eunuchs had assigned over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, 12 Test your servants for ten days; let us be given vegetables to eat and water to drink. 13 Then let our appearance and the appearance of the youths who eat the king s food be observed by you, and deal with your servants according to what you see. 14 So he listened to them in this matter, and tested them for ten days. 15 At the end of ten days it was seen that they were better in appearance and fatter 5 Please Rise

in flesh than all the youths who ate the king s food. 16 So the steward took away their food and the wine they were to drink, and gave them vegetables. 17 As for these four youths, God gave them learning and skill in all literature and wisdom, and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams. 18 At the end of the time, when the king had commanded that they should be brought in, the chief of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar. 19 And the king spoke with them, and among all of them none was found like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. Therefore they stood before the king. 20 And in every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters that were in all his kingdom. 21 And Daniel was there until the first year of King Cyrus. MINISTER PEOPLE ALL All people are like grass, and all their beauty is like the flowers of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, But the Word of our God stands forever. 6 Please Rise

Sermon Series: renewed Life Daniel I: Spiritual Renewal In A Faraway Land (Notes & Thoughts) Ryan McVicar Sermon Discussion Questions 1. The king of Babylon employed the following strategies to press/shape Daniel and his friends into a Babylonian mold. Discuss how we see this in Daniel 1 and how we see it happening in our lives: a) Removal (Isolation) b) Re-education (Indoctrination) c) Re-naming (Identification crisis) d) Rewarding (Incentivizing) e) Re-enforcing 2. Daniel resolved in his heart to resist this mold. What will it look like for you to resolve in your heart to resist the world pressing you into its mold and value system? 3. How does Daniel 1 lead us to the beauty of the gospel and how is the gospel of Jesus Christ our ultimate solution to this struggle? How does all this bring about new or renewed life for you? 7 Please Rise

* For parents who have children in Kids Bible Time, please use this time to pick up your child(ren) from their class. ALL HYMN OF RESPONSE When Trials Come Getty, 2005 Thankyou Music When trials come no longer fear, for in the pain our God draws near To fire a faith worth more than gold, And there His faithfulness is told; and there His faithfulness is told Within the night I know Your peace the breath of God brings strength to me And new each morning mercy flows, As treasures of the darkness grow; as treasures of the darkness grow I turn to Wisdom not my own, for every battle You have known My confidence will rest in You, Your love endures Your ways are good; your love endures Your ways are good When I am weary with the cost I see the triumph of the cross So in its shadow I shall run, Till He completes the work begun; till He completes the work begun One day all things will be made new, I ll see the hope You called me to And in your kingdom paved with gold, I ll praise your faithfulness of old; I ll praise your faithfulness of old CELEBRATION OF HOLY COMMUNION PRAYER OF CONSECRATION INVITATION TO THE LORD S TABLE Communion also known as the Lord s Supper has always been a common, shared, joyous family meal. This meal is for those who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ; for those Baptized Christians who trust in His once-for-all sacrificial death upon the cross for their salvation. When we celebrate this feast, we commune with the risen Lord Jesus who stands as our host to offer spiritual nourishment, renewal and life. We also commune with one another, participating together in the reconciling grace of God. We warmly welcome to the table all who trust in Jesus and who have publicly professed their faith as members of a Christian congregation. At New City, we ask our children not to take communion until they have met with the elders to share of their faith in Christ, although all children are invited to come forward to receive a word of encouragement. If you are not a Christian, we encourage you to spend this time reflecting on the prayers printed on the following page in the hopes that a relationship with Jesus and membership in His Church may be considered. Jesus is truly and spiritually present and stands ready to feed you. Come hungry. Come thirsty. Come ready to be filled. 8 Please Rise

ALL PRAYER OF CONFESSION OF SINS From Daniel 9 Lord, our God, to you alone belongs all righteousness, but to us open shame. We have sinned against you. We quickly conform to this world s standards rather than to the standards of your Word. We lose sight of who we are in Christ and what he is doing in and for us to bring you glory. You are our great and awesome God who keeps your covenant and steadfast love with your people. O Lord, turn our eyes toward you and keep us in your ways. Amen. MINISTER DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS Hebrews 4: For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. WORDS OF INSTITUTION AND BREAKING OF BREAD INDIVIDUAL PRAYERS YOU CAN PRAY DURING COMMUNION PRAYER FOR THOSE SEARCHING FOR THE TRUTH Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth and the life. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen. PRAYER OF BELIEF Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you, I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared to hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as my Savior. Amen. PRAYER OF HUMBLE ACCESS I do not presume to come to this your table, O merciful Lord, trusting in my own goodness, but only in your righteousness credited to me. I am not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord whose manner is always to show mercy. Grant me, therefore, O Lord, the grace to commune now with Christ by faith, that I may evermore live in him and he in me. Amen. 9 Please Rise

ALL HYMN AT THE TABLE Jesus Paid It All Hall, 1865 I hear the Savior say, Thy strength indeed is small, Child of weakness watch and pray, Find in Me thine all in all. Jesus paid it all, All to Him I owe; Sin had left a crimson stain, He washed it white as snow. Lord now indeed I find, Thy power, and Thine alone Can change the leper s spots, and melt the heart of stone. And when before the throne, I stand in Him complete Jesus died my soul to save, My lips shall still repeat. Oh Praise the One who paid my debt And raised this life up from the dead. ALL HYMN OF ENCOURAGEMENT Jesus Shall Reign Watts/Hatton, 1719 Jesus shall reign wherever the sun Does its successive journeys run; His Kingdom stretch from shore to shore, Till sun shall rise and set no more. Blessings abound wherever He reigns: The prisoner leaps to lose his chains, The weary find eternal rest, And all the sons of want are blest. He shall reign in glory, crowned with grace and might. Bless His name, and praise the sovereign King. He shall reign forever with His chosen bride; All the earth shall sing that Jesus is the King! 10 Please Rise

LL 75 WORSHIP 709 N. Washington Ave. Royal Oak, MI (248) INFO@NEWCITYPC.ORG WORSHIPPING WITH CHILDREN What a joy and privilege to worship with children! Worship is a communal activity in which we participate together as a church family and is one of the best ways to welcome children into the life of the church. Yet, children are in the process of learning the significance of worship and how to worship. During our nursery and Kids Bible Times, teachers emphasize why we worship and help children learn prayers and songs that are typically part of our services. However, there are ways parents and congregants alike can train our children in the joys of worship. For Parents: Parents have the responsibility and blessing to lead and train children in worship. Living in a culture where children are constantly entertained can make this responsibility difficult. However, consider the tips below to help the process go a bit more smoothly: Tips for Sunday Worship: Worship with rather than beside children. Help your child who can t read by singing the words of the chorus in their ears so they can sing along. Help them follow along in the Bible. Point out words for young or non-readers that are repetitive. Allow children to participate in offering by sharing their allowance.whisper instructions or comments such as, Now is the time when we tell God how great He is. Use a worship notebook where children can draw pictures of what they hear in the scripture passage and sermon or write down thoughts that are meaningful to them. For the Rest of Us: Church is not for adults only. Supporting the children of New City as they grow as worshippers of the Lord is the responsibility of us all. Remember the commitment you made as a church when children were baptized, a commitment to encourage them to become disciples of Christ. Introduce yourself to the child sitting beside you. Make him or her feel welcomed and important. Teaching children how to worship the Lord with reverence and awe is something we can all be excited about doing. What a blessing and privilege is this special endeavor!
