1 Santuario de San Antonio Parish We Care Because We Pray Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 27, 2019 How To Live Happily Ever After: A Modern Fairy Tale By Mylah Joven-Ching First Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians 13:4-8 Love is patient, love is kind; love is not jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or rude. Never have these passages rung more true than when I got married at the ripe old age of 38. For the longest time I had been a single, independent, professional used to my own ways. Marriage changed all that. After 4 years of dating, my now husband and I tied the knot. In the 3 years we ve been married, I ve learned many significant life lessons, the most important of which is this: both people in a relationship should feel totally and unconditionally accepted, flaws and all. Love does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongs, but rejoices in the right. Everyone wants to be accepted for who they are. As we know, even trying to change small things about ourselves is a monumental challenge, so why then would we think that we can change something about our spouse? My husband and I love in different ways, me through affirming words, him through acts of service. It took some time getting to know each other and during our Pre-Cana seminar before we realized this. In that light bulb moment came empathy and patience so much so that, during the times when we feel irritation towards each other and irresistible traits are forgotten, we dig deep and remember that these differences make us who we are and are the reasons why we fell in love in the first place. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. In my teenage years, I remember making a list of the attributes I would want my future Prince Charming to have. The list was long, the stuff of Disney Princess dreams, but let s face it, I m no Cinderella. As I matured I finally let go of that fantasy image I held in my head. Obviously, when you compare a real live human being to the perfect one in your mind, he or she will always come up lacking. When these unrealistic expectations are not met, suffering ensues. I learned instead to focus on having gratitude for the real person in my life -- for his traits and quirks that I love, and also for the things I don t love and how these help me grow and be a better person. A happy marriage is one where you see your husband or wife for who they truly are rather than as you wished they would be. Santuario de San Antonio Parish Forbes Park, Makati City Tel. nos.: / 31

2 PARISH BULLETIN RANDOM THOUGHTS Voices from Yesterday and Today Amazing Patron Saint of the Youth Saint John Bosco: Founder of the Salesian Order August 16, January 31, 1888 By Peachy Maramba herself) appeared to John as he was unsuccessfully trying to control a bunch of rowdy children by berating and threatening them. She said, Softly, softly If you wish to win them, take your shepherd s staff and lead them into pasture. So from early childhood, urged by our Lady, this became his goal that motivated him for over sixty years! To gather the young boys around him, he would diligently practice circus skills, then entice them with his feats of juggling and other acrobatic feats and magic tricks, always ending with a sermon he had heard in church. Thus enthralled, they would be encouraged to earn their keep through honest means. He would even teach them faith and encourage them to go to Mass with him. It is thanks too to his charismatic personality, his great sense of humor and spirit of joyfulness, that John endeared himself to all who met him. ESTABLISHED THE ORATORY As 2019 is officially known as the Year of the Youth, our model Saint of the Year is John Bosco, who is more fondly known as Don Bosco. This is because this amazing Saint was an admirable Apostle of Youth. It is thanks to this great lover of children, that countless boys and girls all over the world would owe their better way of life. Though born himself of an extremely poor peasant family, he nevertheless, against all odds, managed to get an education and become a priest through sheer hard work and determination. A MYSTERIOUS DREAM A mysterious dream he had when he was only nine years old made him realize his calling to help struggling poor children like himself to make a better life for themselves. In this dream, a woman (some say it was the Virgin Mary 2 Renting an old barn in a field he called The Oratory of St. Francis de Sales, a Saint he admired so much, he sent for his mother to help him. Here, the youth, in addition to getting a home, an education, religious instruction and recreation, could learn a trade and at the same time get the basics of Christian life to make them honest and good Christians. In the workshops which Don Bosco opened, they learned shoemaking, tailoring and printing. This practice is being successfully adapted here in the Philippines today for our so-called street children. Many of our own scholars of the Santuario de San Antonio are enrolled here. All this Don Bosco achieved -- thanks to his hard work, persistence in begging, his genial, sunny disposition and charismatic personality -- ensured his success when asking for help throughout Europe. He also paid for it by writing popular books, preaching and from charitable donations.

3 January 27, 2019 But for many millions whose lives he had touched and made better and even for the many millions of street children who have been helped through his dream, he will always remain the Amazing Patron Saint of Street Children. Pope John Paul II named him teacher and father to the young. HIS DEATH FOUNDED THE SALESIAN ORDER To help him care for homeless boys -- not only in Turin but also in other parts of Italy -- Don Bosco founded the Salesian Order or the Society of St. Francis of Sales, which he named after the Bishop of Geneva for whom he had great admiration. It was in 1859, when his Society finally received general approval from Pope Pius IX. Don Bosco placed the Order under the protection of Mary, Help of Christians and St. Francis de Sales, his favorite Saint. This Order helped him to established night schools, full time technical schools, apprentice workshops and dormitories. It not only continued and expanded his apostolate but also helped to establish foreign missions in Patagonia and all over South America. They taught the boys through a remarkable unheard-of education system where bodily chastisement was completely eliminated and preventive measures of love, patience, religion and firmness were used instead. He followed his axiom of avoiding punishment. Try to gain love before inspiring fear. The system of education he formulated was based on reason, religion and kindness. So that the poor and neglected girls may also be helped, Don Bosco in 1872, with St. Mary Mazzarello, founded a congregation of nuns -- the Daughters of Our Lady Help of Christians -- doing similar work among girls. To assist, supplement and fund the work of both congregations, Don Bosco then organized the third Order called Salesian Cooperators, who followed Salesian spirituality in their homes. Little mention is made of John s job as a church-builder. Although, starting from his first little church, he proceeded to the construction of another larger one, completed in Besides being an outstanding educator of the Roman Catholic Church, pioneering in the education for the poor Don Bosco had also fostered 2500 priestly vocations. He was also a remarkable writer usually spending half of the night writing books and magazines. He even wrote a biography of St. Dominic Savio, who was one of his own pupils. He was furthermore a great preacher especially in the way he effectively presented the truth and mysteries of the faith. It is no wonder that Don Bosco was canonized in 1934 by one of his greatest admirers, Pope Pius XI with his Feast Day being on January 31, the day he died. Fittingly, he is honored as the patron saint of the schools of the arts and trade, as well as cartoonists and cinema workers. Shortly after his church dedicated to the Sacred Heart in Rome was completed, Don Bosco died at Turin on January 31, He had been able to offer only one Mass there. 6 PARISH BULLETIN 6 Acceptance and Continuing to Serve A few weeks ago, I was asked by our parish editorial team to write about this week s topic, Acceptance. Thinking on what to write, I began reminiscing about my early years serving SSAP. I have been truly fortunate that people in our Parish embraced me wholeheartedly. I was indeed blessed to have met so many nice and welcoming people in our community. Reflecting further, it was humbling to see how God made so many different people with a wide range of talents, work together as a community. Goodness knows all the different quirks and eccentricities we all have here. Even with so many blessings from the past, my family was challenged a few months ago. My mother -- who is the bedrock of my family -- was suddenly diagnosed with a very serious By Edmund Lim illness. Many doubts and hesitation filled my heart. Why would God allow this to happen? Was I unfaithful to Him and our Church? It was in this difficult time that I found it so challenging to go to Mass and continue to serve. Serving before was light hearted and fun. For a while, I even found praying to be difficult. I stopped praying the Liturgy of the Hours after praying it for so many years. Then in the middle of it all, a voice in me (probably the Holy Spirit and not some other type of liquid spirits) made me read the Book of Job. Reading this part of the Bible made me remember that even in our darkest hour, there is still no greater good than GOD. I was also reminded to be like JOB, to trust in God s goodness ACCEPTING the good, as well as the bad, and still continue to serve. With difficulty at first, I tried praying again and accepting whatever may come -- accepting the need to soldier on -- whether times are good or difficult. I came here more than 10 years ago. I feel grateful that all of you accepted me into our community. Now, when the clouds are darker, I am still grateful to be in this place because our Church has taught me to accept what is happening and soldier on. Truly our Parish is a remarkable place. Long may it remain so! 7 January 27, 2019 Who are you? A parent? A child? A business owner? A student? A friend? Are you left-brained or rightbrained? Are you sociable? Are you quiet? There are so many ways that we can describe ourselves and there is a multitude of conspicuous and inconspicuous truths about us. Some of these truths, many people know. Others, we keep only to ourselves. He Loves Us First By Jonathan Cruz But our deepest truth is that we are Jesus beloved. YOU are Jesus beloved. And He does not love you just as a member of the Holy Catholic Church, but more because you are you. He made us purely out of love. He loves us beyond all our weaknesses, faults, and failures. He calls us into a personal relationship with Him. He wants us to get to know Him just as we do with our other family, friends, and loved ones. So where does this lead us? According to Bishop Robert Barron in his lecture series Seven Deadly Sins, Seven Lively Virtues, this means that [we] can relax, [we re] ok. [We ve] been loved into being and all God wants to do is to bring [us] to life. We can experience that peace and satisfaction that we long for and become a conduit of His love for the world around us. The more you give God s life [and love] away, the more you get, he says. This then becomes the source of worth and dignity and the central truth and mission of our lives: Revel in the absolute love Jesus has for you, then share and be that love to the world around you.
