On Wednesday, Brent crude rose more than 5pc to almost $112 a barrel, threatening levels that could derail the global economy. Wall Street was down 1pc in early trading and the FTSE 100 fell 1.2pc. The Dow has shed more than 300 points over the past three days to 12,075. Nomura said a shut-down in both Libya and Algeria would cut global supply by 2.9m b/d and reduce OPEC spare capacity to 2.1m b/d, comparable with levels at the onset of the Gulf War and worse than during the 2008 spike, when prices hit $147. Both price shocks preceeded or triggered a recession in Europe and the US. Fatih Birol, chief economist for the International Energy Agency, said the latest price rise had already become a "serious risk" for the fragile economies of the OECD bloc. Some analysts fear the underlying picture is worse that officially recognised, doubting Saudi claims of ample spare capacity. A Wikileaks cable cited comments by a geologist for the Saudi oil giant Aramco that the kingdom's reserves had been overstated by 40pc. A second cable cited US diplomats asking whether the Saudis "any longer have the power to drive prices down for a prolonged period".

10 Oil could hit $220 a barrel on Libya and Algeria fears, warns Nomura - T of 3 3/6/2011 6:33 PM Nomura's report, which does not examine the catastrophic scenario of a full-blown Gulf crisis, said past oil shocks have shown a three-stage pattern, with a final blow-off in prices in the final phase. The current crisis is at stage one. Surging oil prices create a nasty dilemma for central banks since they are inflationary if caused by robust global growth, but deflationary if caused by a supply crunch that acts as a tax on consuming nations. The big oil exporters tend to save extra revenues from price spikes at first, so the initial effect is to drain global demand. The current picture contains elements of both, with an added twist of liquidity created by the US Federal Reserve that is leaking into the global system and playing havoc with commodity pricing. US Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner said on Wednesday that the world economy is stong enough to "handle" the oil shock, insisting that central banks "have a lot of experience in managing these things". The European Central Bank (ECB) responded to the oil spike in July 2008 by raising rates even though Germany and Italy were in recession by then. Nout Wellink, the ECB's Dutch governor, said this had been a policy error. Circumstances are different this time yet also murky. ECB chief Jean-Claude Trichet signalled last month that the bank will "look through" the short-term price hump, but ECB rhetoric has since turned more hawkish. Fed doves will undoubtedly give more weight to the deflationary risks. Jeremy Leggett, a leader of the UK industry task force on peak oil and energy security, said the Mid-East crisis "shows the extreme fragility of the global system. People don't realise how close we are to a potential precipice if this unrest reaches critical mass in enough OPEC countries. Governments need to draw up emergency plans and get cracking on proactive measures while we still have time," he said. Charles Robertson at Renaissance Capital said the real concern nagging investors is what will happen in Saudi Arabia's oil-rich Eastern Province, the home of the kingdom's restless Shi'ite minority. The Saudis produce 11.6pc of world output, but a much higher share of exports. "There is potential for serious tension, and not just among the Shia. High unemployment and the youth bulge means unrest could be country-wide. If Saudi Arabia or Iran are engulfed, we have a serious problem." The reason that the situation now is so delicate is that we just had a recession. When you have a recession on top of a recession, it s like a heart attack on a heart attack you are too weak, you can t handle it. According to Luft, if we get another oil shock, it can roll back all of the economic recovery we ve had. Then you will see millions of people losing their jobs around the world. To make matters worse, Luft said he didn t believe that a hypothetical Western-led military intervention to secure Saudi Arabia s oil fields would help matters. Let s say the US sends the military to take over Saudi Arabia. The oil fields in Saudi Arabia are in the eastern, mostly Shi ite province next to Iran, so the Iranians will start an intifada there. They d blow up the fields, they d blow up the pipelines, they d boobytrap everything there and you ll see a situation like Iraq or Afghanistan, just in the world s richest oil province, he said.

It s very easy to take over an area militarily. It doesn t mean you can maintain economic activity in the same place. If the world s oil supply is threatened, security issues for Israel would only worsen, Luft added. The flipside is that [in such a scenario,] the very same countries we re trying to weaken, like Iran, would strengthen. What you would see is a historic transfer of wealth from the world s poorest people to the world s richest people. Because people in Africa will have to buy oil for the same price that everybody else does; they don t get a discount for being poor. Luft, who is also the co-founder of the Set America Free Coalition an alliance of national security, environmental, labor and religious groups promoting ways to reduce America s dependence on foreign oil said the most crucial necessity was to break oil s monopoly on the world s transportation systems. This, he said, could help end the current situation wherein we base our entire future and prosperity and way of life on a group of dictatorships that might collapse in a matter of a few days. The transportation sector, which underlies the global economy, runs on oil. Your food, your clothes, everything is dependent on oil. We re all treading on very thin ice if we think about this, like a turkey before Thanksgiving. Everything is good, you re getting your food and you re happy, and then you wake up and it s Thanksgiving and life gets very unhappy. Luft said the United States must pass laws that would require every new car sold in America be a flexible fuel car, arguing that if you re running out of oil, then it s folly to continue to put cars on the road that can only run on oil. Luft mentioned conclusions drawn in his book, Turning Oil into Salt: Energy Independence Through Fuel Choice, which describes how salt went from being one of the world s top commodities to just another resource. Salt used to be one of the world s most prestigious commodities because it had a monopoly on food refrigeration, he explained. Then we invented canning, and later refrigeration, and that s it, you no longer needed to send soldiers to defend salt mines. Salt became boring. Hopefully the same will happen with oil, making it just another commodity stripped of its strategic power. In the earth made new we can be sure that the things which can be known and comprehended about God, will indeed be known by all. Right now our world is so full of confusion, bloodshed, ladderclimbing, jealousy and not so much unbelief but uncertainty about what to actually believe in. Who can keep count of the variations of religion that are added to the constantly growing list? When a seeker wants to find truth, where shall they go? Well, of course, that s a broad question. And one may ask, Truth about What? While all truth is eternal, some truths take a while to ripen in the mind. And some truths, though important, are not as essential as others. Knowing the precise measurements of the universe might be completely uneccesary, if you have no plan or possibility to one day actually check the math out with your own eyes. Right?
