ANNUAL REPORT TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH ANNUAL REPORT FROM INTERIM PASTOR RED BURCHFIELD 4 Dear Friends in Christ, In the Gospel of John hear Jesus inviting his disciples to experience the joy that comes with a deeper walk with God. I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. JOHN 15:11 Thank you for our partnership in the Gospel. It has been my joy to serve as your Interim Pastor and walk with you during this transition as we prepare for the arrival of a new pastoral partnership. Transitions provide unique opportunities to engage in wide evaluation that can help a congregation embrace the grace and joy as disciples of the crucified and risen Christ. The time is right for Trinity s next chapter of our ministry and a deeper journey with God and one another. The congregation is built on the strong pillars of the Gospel and strong lay and pastoral leadership. Trinity also has renewed desire to share the love and joy of Christ with long-timers and newcomers alike. Now is the time to deepen these positive attributes in our life together. We live in such an unpredictable world. The events in our lives and world show us just how fragile life can be. I believe these events also reveal a great longing in our collective American psyche for a greater sense of meaning and purpose. Many people have lost their sense of purpose and often don t feel safe. There is a deep longing for a clear, open, gracious word that does not deny the chaos all around and within us or pretend that we can return to an earlier time. This challenge provides us with a great opportunity. The world needs our witness more than ever. In our polarized world there is a strong temptation to blame others when we are upset and afraid. It is easy to turn inward, attempt to maintain our own security, build a wall around ourselves and hold on more tightly to everything around us. As Christians, we know that fear and worry are not the last word about our lives or our world. The presence of the crucified and risen Christ is the LIVING WORD that breaks through fear and worry with the power to transform and create new life with us and our world. The world needs the witness of a reconciling community more then ever. Families need help raising faithful healthy children. Our elders need our support as they slow down and want to hand off their cherished roles and pass on their deep faith and precious memories. Everyone can benefit from deeper formation in the new life revealed in Jesus to face the challenges of our time. In Paul s letter to the Christians in Corinth we see that Jesus didn t entrust the message of God s amazing reconciliation to just a few of us. This call to live the gift of God s forgiving and reconciling grace was given to all of us in our baptism. All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation so we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us and we urge you also not to accept the grace of God in vain. 2 CORINTHIANS 5:18 6:1 Our genuine openness to one another and the stranger, our commitment to share the warmth of God s reconciling love in Christ Jesus are urgently needed in a world where terror has become normal, ideological debate passes for dialogue and fearful reaction often replaces thoughtful response. Trinity has always found its way to step up and meet its challenges of the past. Let s re-dedicate ourselves to the gospel of God s reconciling love in Jesus. Together in Jesus Christ, we are freed by grace, to live faithfully, love boldly, and serve joyfully, so that the world experiences the difference God s grace and love in Christ makes for all people and creation. TLC INTERIM MISSION STATEMENT It is an exciting time to be a Christian. It is my great joy to serve as your pastor here at Trinity. I believe that your next chapter in ministry has exciting challenges and opportunities for all who step forward on this discipleship journey for reconciliation and love. Your partner in ministry, Rev. Brian Red Burchfield

ANNUAL REPORT TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH STAFF REPORTS 6 Lynn Landers Interim Administrator Last year this time, I was praying about how God wanted me to use my skills and abilities to serve Him (actually I had been praying about it since I retired from Government service in September of 2015). The opportunity to serve as the Interim Administrator at Trinity answered that prayer and what a blessing it has been. I committed to 13 months of service and it has been a delightful and enlightening year. My heart and soul have been enriched by the generosity, volunteers, can-do attitude and willingness to accept and embrace change throughout the Congregation. Working in a nonprofit setting, after a career of military, government and attorney work, required a steep learning curve about how decisions are made and how to move projects forward. Process, process, process. Collaboration, affirmation, empowerment, encouragement, involvement and team work proved to be the key. Here is what our staff, our council, our Facilities Board, our volunteers, and you the congregation have accomplished this year. Safe Haven for Children & Vulnerable Adults Policy updated and approved Drafting, approval and hopefully (at the annual meeting) ratification of the Congregational Constitution Drafting and approval of the revised Personnel Polices and Procedural Manual A balanced budget Completed audits for 2015, 2016, with all recommendations addressed and implemented accordingly; and a work in progress for 2017 Short term fundraiser that exceeded our goal of $150,000 for new flooring and an upgraded sound system in our sanctuary Long term stewardship plan First Impressions Committee created to better welcome members and guests Central filing system for official files in both hard copy and electronic versions Clear job descriptions for our staff members Annual staff goals and objectives Annual staff evaluations Standardized Facility Use Agreements and schedule for fees Contract services for custodians at half the cost Membership roster and database adjusted to reflect current members Long term review plan for significant documents Close working relationship with Lynnwood Police Department and increased security Storage areas cleaned out and inventoried, including garages 920 LED lights installed at both Lynnwood & Mukilteo locations, with more than half the costs reimbursed by PUD Expanded office hours to include Monday Updated Ministry booklet Landscaping cleanup and plan to maintain New carpeting installed in the sanctuary, narthex, classrooms and chapel New flooring installed in multipurpose room Freshly painted walls in classroom 203, the narthex and the multipurpose room New sound system installed in the sanctuary Closer relationships between our schools and staff/congregation Memorandum of Understanding with Pointe of Grace regarding their transition to a Recognized Congregation Thank you for granting me the opportunity to exercise the gifts God has given me by serving you. We have worked diligently to prepare our congregation, our staff, our facilities and our spirit to welcome new leadership to Trinity. Keep up the great work!! $154,000+ Raised during our short term fundraiser Sound, Space, Spirit by over 175 individuals/families to replace flooring and sound system

Norma Aamodt-Nelson Cantor & Minister of Music Take our hearts and hands and voices gifts of love, Alleluia! As this program year concludes, we are in the throes of environmental change with new paint and floor coverings. We are also watching from a distance the work of the call committee as we anticipate pastoral change. It has been a vibrant interim year under the capable leadership of Pastor Red Burchfield whose enthusiasm for worship and music has been infectious. While I ve known of his gifted leadership from other congregations in the area, I have been truly thankful to have had this time to work with him. Our volunteer lay leaders led intergenerational choral and instrumental offerings, to include Susan Carlson and Megan Jeffrey with our youngest singers, Joyful Noise (age 3-5); Liz Aplin with Alleluia Choir (K-gr 2); Sheri Setzer with Jubilate Choir (gr 3-6); Deb and Pete Johnson with Celebration Band and the Teens; Colleen Farrell with Youth Ringers; and Gordon Hilstad, Con Spirito (low adult voices); Dianne and Rebecca Herivel with Raylene Ewing leading Pointe of Grace worship music; choral accompanists Judy Schleusner and Edna Mae Olufson-Smith, not to mention our own brass ensemble and handbells, and a host of volunteer pianists serving our off-site worship sites. To God be the Glory! With graciousness and enthusiasm the worship spaces in Mukilteo and Lynnwood were opened to host outside ensembles as we continue to be a witness to the community. Artists at the Organ offered concerts in celebration of the 23rd anniversary of the Pasi organ, and Pointe of Grace welcomed Kammerstreich/Kamiak HS strings, and other studio recitals throughout the year. The Lynnwood site hosted a wide variety of concerts through the year, including the Sno-King Middle School Choral Festival, Mirinesse Women, Eagle s Wings High School Choir of Naperville IL, Lyric Arts, Rock n Roll, Augsburg Fortress music workshops, Pacific MusicWorks, Seattle Children's Chorus, Seattle School of Strings, Northwest BoyChoir, Mead High School, Mukilteo Korean Christmas, Sound Singers, Sno-King Community Chorale, Seattle Pro Musica, Spiritus Winds, Bells of the Sound, Snohomish Youth Chorus, Skyros String Quartet, Petit Chanseur of Monaco, our own resound Chamber Choral ensemble, and a wide range of studio recitals. In May we had a special treat when Soundview School 3rd-5th graders (20 of them) for the 10th year in a row, came to explore and play the Pasi organ, followed the next day by Arizona State University students with their professor Kimberly Marshall (both pictured below). In partnership with you, Norma Aamodt-Nelson, Cantor/Minister of Music TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH ANNUAL REPORT Students from nearby Soundview Elementary play the organ Arizona State University organ students checking out our Pasi Organ 7

ANNUAL REPORT TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH 8 David Greenlee Minister of Faith Formation Student Ministries Summer 2017 was both very successful and very busy for student ministries at Trinity. 15 students participated in the Mystery Trip or went to camp. Weekly summer programming saw around 33 students each week. And this coming 2018 summer, 22 students are heading to either Idaho Servant Adventure or a camp. The 16th annual high school winter retreat was held as well as two middle school retreats as part of the affirmation process. ZOE and NET continued as usual, but saw a drop in average attendance as classes get smaller, even as the active group remains faithful. The adult volunteer staff have once again helped make our ministry to young people successful. Special thanks to Kristen Uri, Garrett Debner Christena Greenlee, Erik Harada, Joe Jeske, Sue Meyer and Pat Smith for being there for the kids year after year, week after week. In the coming year we are exploring adding a drop in time at the Loft (aka Trinity House) to reach out to more students. This is seen as building a program that will eventually meet in the new Lynnwood Neighborhood Center, once it is built. Children s Ministries Children s ministry has had a great year! 17 volunteers worked with Footprints Sunday School, including our new opening for the younger kids, preschool thru 3rd grade. This new opening includes singing, offering and celebrating of birthdays. Footprints children dancing and singing during Sunday opening Other highlights this year include a Kick-off Carnival in September and an inter-generational Epiphany celebration in January. Currently, a great team is planning VBS for summer 2018, with Kerry Fleiger-Holmes and Jenny Vanderwerff as co-coordinators. Several other family summer events are also currently being planned, to expand our summer offerings beyond VBS. Adult Faith Formation A team of adults have been working to plan and implement the Sunday morning adult education and various other offerings. Highlights of the year include Jeff Tobin s teaching on the Psalms, Compassionate Listening with Ruth Lee, and two Saturday seminars with Kempton Hewitt on Mark and Luke/Acts. We have also worked with the Stewardship Team to identify courses in financial stewardship to offer at Trinity. Additionally, a work group was formed this spring to begin work on the Core Project which we hope will be a continually offered set of faith forming experiences and opportunities for adults to extend their spiritual formation. Joshua Judd-Herzfeldt Communication Coordinator 2017 was a year of transition, a process which always brings with it a certain amount of tension, anxiety and uncertainty. Despite that, however, the Trinity community has made great strides in how we communicate with one another, doing the hard work of self-evaluation and introspection as we set the stage for our future together. This past year has brought some practical and visual changes to some of the tasks that are within my purview. One of the biggest is the separation of the 9 AM bulletin from the combined bulletin. The remaining services were combined into one order of worship to simplify, save space, and assist visitors. These changes save us several reams of paper each week! Updates to our website and the weekly What s Happening serve to provide consistent and appealing visuals and highlight important aspects of Trinity and its ministries. Watch for more in the year to come!

Kim Kusilek Coordinator of Schools & Harbour Pointe Christian Preschool Director has been an incredible year for Harbour Pointe Christian Preschool. Connections continue to solidify between the preschool and many of the great ministries at Pointe of Grace. It has been a joy to have consistent faces in the church office as well as pastoral presence. I am proud to work with such an amazing team: Sue Reynolds, Janis Tate, Janet Hammond, Amy Biedscheid, Traci Younker, Theresa Costanzo, Quin Fisher, Stacey Woodworth, Donna Romesburg, and Kris Hammer. They are creative, passionate, dependable and dedicated. Each one, a gift to our school! I am also fortunate to work with a dedicated Preschool Board under the direction of Jaime Lewis, board chair. As a board we held three successful fundraisers this year, a basket raffle & carnival in October, and two silent auctions in May. What joy to see the sanctuary filled to capacity for all of these events! With monies raised, the hallway carpet was updated, one classroom will receive new carpet this summer, and our lead teachers will be attending the I Teach Pre-K National Conference (5 days) in July, out of state. The remaining funds raised at these events will help us continue to provide a Kidfit Physical Education program twice per month, and a music class once per month for all of our classes. We provided several in-house field trips for our students this year including visits from the Reptile Man and Mukilteo Firefighters. A Dental Health Program was provided by Mukilteo Dental Center and Stellar Kids Dental as well. Our fundraisers have become a significant part of our budget. In November and again, in February we collected specified food items to donate to Packs for Kids, a ministry at Pointe of Grace that provides weekend food to Mukilteo School District students that would otherwise go hungry. Our families were extremely gracious, exceeding all the goals we had set for our donations! Christmas Craft night in December had its highest turn-out ever with over 100 participants. It was a great joy to join forces with many of the ministries at Pointe of Grace. The sense of community was infectious. The entire evening was a beautiful demonstration of what can happen when we work together. Cherrie Wallace, of the Pointe of Grace Teaching Garden, invited students to tour the garden last fall to learn about the many plants and vegetables growing out there. We were lucky enough to receive several of the pumpkins they grew for great science exploration units in our classrooms. We are looking forward to a spring field trip to our garden in the next couple of weeks. This has become another great ministry connection here at HPCP. Our enrollment has stayed above budgeted numbers all year. Our enrollment numbers are expected to completely fill to capacity, so we will continue to offer an afternoon class for four year olds. We continue to work towards the possibility of adding some type of retirement benefit program for the teachers here at HPCP. I value the importance of our Trinity All Staff meetings as well as an occasional visit to the Pointe of Grace Ministry Team meetings. This involvement is vital to the cohesiveness of the two locations and I am grateful for the connection that Trinity/Pointe of Grace makes to our preschool. I look forward to additional collaboration between church and schools. As our academic year comes to a close we again reflect on the promise that is our ministry. The children, the families and the staff at HPCP are truly second to none. We are humbled by the opportunity to touch so many lives. We feel blessed to be able to share our vision. 10 ANNUAL REPORT TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH 10 Kris Dudak Trinity Lutheran Preschool Director It s been a year of busy activities, fun events and wonderful experiences at our Preschool. Yes I said our Preschool! In September we will celebrate 38 years of ministry at Trinity. People have asked if the preschool is related to the church Yes! Our Preschool at Trinity was organized by members of and is run by the church for the community as a ministry. Each weekday you will find 75 families parking here, dropping off their children and connecting with other young families. They know their children will learn and grow under experienced, educated, dedicated and caring teachers and will learn about God, the family of God and the wondrous world God has made for us through bible stories each week. Their children will be introduced to Jesus, the wonderful teacher, healer and savior for the whole world. Our parents make a choice to send their children here for a high quality Christian Preschool experience. That sets us apart from all the other preschools in the community. So if you hear someone wondering about the Preschool, go ahead and tell them all about OUR Preschool! We have a great team of teachers made up of very talented people. They include, Bonnie Mearns, Gail Steele, Kimberly Vail, Joelle Dudak, Kat Leaty, Nicole Faris, and Hannah Nguyen. I want to especially thank Bonnie, who at the end of this year, will have been with OUR preschool for 30 years. What a gift of faithful service!! Each one of these women give of themselves every day joyfully and we owe them our gratitude! Another way we reach out to our community and beyond is through our financial assistance and Tanzania Education programs. This year we helped 6 children attend Trinity Preschool and provided 5 children in Tanzania all their education costs. Both programs combined, we gave just over $10,000. We are very proud to be able to teach our children to care for others as they bring Chapel donations each week for these programs. We have made a bigger effort to invite the whole congregation to our big events like the Pre-K Christmas Program and the Spring Sing this year. We also help sponsor the Christmas Craft Night along with the Child Development Center and Trinity s Children s Ministry team, an event that brings families together for a fun evening in December. We hope to become more visible to the congregation by contributing to the What s Happening and on Sunday mornings on the big screen. I also am celebrating 30 years of service to Trinity of which I am very proud! I joined the Trinity staff in May of 1988 and have been here through many changes of leadership and in three different physical buildings. As we were asked important questions to get ready to call a new pastor this past year, one question I found easy to answer was, what makes Trinity so special? For me the answer has remained the same for 30 years: it s the people!! People who care in a thousand of real tangible ways about all of God s people! Nanette Erban Trinity Child Development Center Director Thank you for another exciting year with the staff and families in the Child Development Center. This year we embarked on three projects designed to improve the way we care for the children and families we serve. First, we adopted the Hands-on Bible Curriculum by Group for our Preschool Beginnings and Pre-K classroom chapel (ages 3-5). This series uses Big Books, active play and dramatic play to tell the stories of our faith in a way that preschoolers can understand. Second, we are in the process of going digital with Brightwheel, an app-based system which allows parents and staff to better communicate with each other throughout the day, and helps the staff record and report activities of a child s day. Furthermore, administration is able to track accounting for each family. We are excited to see how this technology can help us serve families. Finally, we adopted the Ages and Stages Questionnaire version 3 (ASQ3), a system by which we can screen and assess children s development and plan experiences to meet individual needs. Many new things are in the works to enhance the quality of care we provide to 120+ children in our community. Thank you for your continuing support and prayers. Staff: Debbie Apitz, Josie Ash, Amy Clausen, Kathy Cosgrove, Lauren Debner, Lois Debner, Becca Earenfight, Autumn Erban, Teresa Grootonk, Ashley Hoover, Liudmila Labanava, Semhar Neway, Keri Morgret, Tatyana Pankovets, Viktoriya Pankovets Yana Pankovets, Donna Rabbers, Kaylie Reynolds Kaitlynne Schweedler, Crystal Switzler-Tucci, Zinash Teklegiorgis, Heather Tucker, Kimberly Vail, Cheryl Vierra This year we will be saying Go in Grace and serve the Lord to: Kassidy Dahlman, Kylie Darby, Taylor Likes and Emily Starr as they leave us to continue their educational careers.

President s Report Gratitude and Hope Bill Rankin It was a privilege to serve as congregational president this past year. Thank you for the confidence and trust you have placed with our entire Council and me. In a year of transition, my main objective was to hold things steady and constant, allowing our Council, staff and congregations the safety, space, and opportunity to build for the future. It is amazing what ground we have covered this past year! We started last summer by receiving recommendations from the Graciously Delivering Team report, and we are ending the year with the formal calling of our next pastor at Trinity Lynnwood. Additionally, Pointe of Grace is rapidly moving through the process to be an independent Recognized Congregation of the ELCA! The Spirit is moving among our people in wondrous ways! The recommendations from the Graciously Delivering Team delineated what both ministry sites held as essential steps toward nourishing our congregational life together. In looking over this list, we have accomplished almost all of them! I would like to acknowledge the skillful leadership of Pastor Red Burchfield and superb management of Interim Administrator Lynn Landers, who made these initiatives successful. In, through and underlying all of these actions has been our faithful staff. They have held the foundation in place; by recommending changes and helping us present our worship services, schools and ourselves in the very best light. Collaboration, designing for future, putting aside our hurt. We kicked the year off with an ice cream social and retreat at Pointe of Grace for council and staff. We focused on relationship building, goals for the year ahead, and then with Pastor Red s direction dove into the work of crafting an interim Mission Statement. Ruth Lee met with our council and led us in her Introduction to Compassionate Listening. In another exercise, our council members listed their gifts and ways to use those gifts during the year. Council and its subcommittees worked to get many COUNCIL REPORTS of our constitutional documents, procedures and standing committee charters into alignment with the current ELCA standards. These complex and timeconsuming projects took many months to accomplish. The Personnel and Executive Committee (your Council officers) and Lynn Landers spent many hours creating a new Policy and Procedures Manual, and reassessing staff position descriptions. Our staff and Lynn had open and safe conversations to achieve these goals. The Call Committee has been meeting and interviewing candidates for several months now, using the work of the Transition Team and the Ministry Site Profile. It has been extremely valuable to have Pointe of Grace and Trinity Lynnwood folks work together on this, as Pointe of Grace will be soon repeating the call process for their own pastoral leader later this year. Bold Responses I am always impressed with what our people can do when given a challenge! Trinity Lynnwood held a very successful short term fundraiser called Sound, Space, Spirit that raised over $154,000 for replacing carpet and the sound system. The Pointe of Grace campus continues to thrive under the direction of Pastors Joan and John Beck. The Pointe of Grace Wednesday afternoon Mukilteo Teen Lounge is a resounding success, and at last count, Packs for Kids was serving over 100 children in the Mukilteo area each and every week with supplemental food. In an important show of solidarity and goodwill, the Pointe of Grace hymnal drive is well under way with a strong response from both ministry sites. Now, as Pointe of Grace prepares to launch off on its own, a collaborative Memorandum of Understanding has been drafted and was presented to the Council for approval. This MOU will define responsibilities of both ministries as we move into a new relationship together. Thank you for the many conversations shared with me, and your visions of our future. I especially enjoyed worshipping with you at all four church services, as well as at Fairwinds Retirement Center. I see God at work and you working as God s hands in our communities. Peace and Grace, Bill Rankin TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH ANNUAL REPORT 11

ANNUAL REPORT TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH Treasurer s Report Ted Haase Affecting our budget in 2017 were decreased attendance, membership and contributions. Our Facilities Director, Bruce Sutherland, retired in June, 2017 and his position has not been able to be filled. A committed group of volunteers in our Facilities team has been contributing significantly to the needs for maintaining our facilities. In the second half of 2017, Interim Pastor Brian Burchfield began mid-summer, along with Interim Administrator Lynn Landers. Attendance and contributions began to stabilize by the end of the year as we made steady progress to establish the processes and teams for creating the Ministry Site Profile, elect a Call Committee and take the steps towards calling a lead pastor. In this transitional year, we drew more heavily than anticipated on the Crossroads/ Transitional Bequest funds Summary of Income and Expenses 2016 Actual 2017 Budget 2017 Actual Income Contributions - TLC Lynnwood 1,126,989 1,166, ,493 Contributions - TLC Pointe of Grace 153, , ,008 Total Contributions 1,280,150 1,314,018 1,104,501 Facilities Use and Other Income 94,370 87, ,781 Total Income 1,374,520 1,401,261 1,205,282 Expenses Benevolence 84,277 88,921 71,792 Personnel 961,321 1,033, ,665 Management and Facilities* 374, , ,480 Mission Ministries** 23,980 34,310 25,470 Total Expenses 1,443,879 1,541,568 1,462,407 Income less Expenses -69, , ,125 Reserve Expenditures 69, , ,125 Net for Year-End * Includes mortgage, facilities (utilities, equipment and upkeep), ministry and management (insurance, office supplies) ministries. Due to large distributions during 2014 and 2015, no distributions occurred during as the combined cumulative value of income and distributions were still negative on December 31, The Endowment Committee recommends Endowment Bylaw changes to the congregation, as reviewed by Council, which will reduce the chance of distributing more money than the bylaws provide for total annual distributions. The 2018 bylaw amendments replace distribution of investment income plus designated donations with a 4% distribution of a 5-year average investment value plus designated donations. The distribution change is in-line with Washington State Law as adopted in 2009 and ELCA guidelines. The Endowment s market value was $243, on January 1, Assets increased $19, during 2017 for an ending value on December 31, 2017 of $262, The June 24, 2018 congregation meeting agenda will include as an action item the Endowment bylaws amendments. Forums were held at Trinity location on June 3 to provide information and answer questions about the Endowment bylaws. In addition, the proposed Endowment bylaws will be available at the church website. If the proposed Endowment bylaws amendments are approved on June 24, 2018, the money available for distribution during 2018, under the amended Endowment bylaws, is $9,894. 18 ANNUAL REPORT TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH MINISTRY AREA REPORTS 18 All for Peace Liz Gimmestad, Regina Ingram, Joan Jolly, Maureen McKenzie Haase All for Peace is a group of Trinity, Pointe of Grace, and community members who meet on a regular basis with members from Dar Alarqam Mosque in Lynnwood and the Islamic Center of Mukilteo. We gather monthly on the 3rd Thursday around a cup of tea or coffee, for good food and interesting conversation to better know each other as neighbors. Out of these conversations arose the desire to work together to make the neighborhoods that we share better places. We worked together to repair the playground at Dar Alarqam, served breakfast at Neighbors in Need at Trinity, and participated in Lynnwood s Clean and Green event to beautify our neighborhood. Throughout the year we held lectures for the community on Islam and its history (like the Islam 101 event presented by David Fenner), shared meals together, had a Family Barbeque Picnic, and marched together in several parades. Following one of the dinners, a woman commented, This (gathering) is so much bigger than you understand. this gives us a sense of acceptance and belonging in this country. Artists at the Organ Penny Lorenz Trinity Artists at the Organ just completed its 23rd anniversary season featuring three events: winner of the AGO National Convention competition Katelyn Emmerson s first Northwest performance; Mozart and the King of Instruments featuring organists Naomi Shiga and Jonathan Wohlers, violinists Svend Ronning and Gwendolyn Taylor, and cellist Meg Brennand; and the final concert of the season with guest artist Bruce Neswick who is Canon Musician at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Portland, Oregon, a native of Washington State and who went to PLU with our own Norma. These concerts continue to be very popular and draw people to our church from near and far, people who experience God s presence in our church through music, with an average attendance of We are very grateful to Martin Pasi who regularly maintains and tunes the organ for us. We look forward to our 24th season, with more wonderful concerts, to be announced soon. Community & Middle East Peace Builders John Berg CMEPB exists to build strategic connections between the people of the Northwest and the Middle East. We do this first by supporting the LAMPS of the Holy Land and broader Middle East, i.e. Christian organizations and churches in their faithful witness to reconciliation as they serve amongst Muslims and Jews; secondly through our own domestic initiatives of advocacy and relationships that impact our witness across the Northwest. We enable those who attend our events to: creatively relate to our neighbors, including those of other faith traditions; and become local and global practitioners of restorative justice, nonviolence, compassionate listening, peacebuilding and reconciliation Recent accomplishments: we continued to show unique films, host guest speakers and guide discussion leading to engagement in domestic and global peacebuilding. Films included: Rick Steves The Holy Land: Israelis & Palestinians Today, The Lemon Tree, Salam Neighbor, 4.1 Miles, Andrew Larsen s Blessed Are The Peacemakers: A Journey to Palestine, Disturbing the Peace, The Occupation of the American Mind, Jews Step Forward, Wrestling Jerusalem, 1948: Creation and Catastrophe. Guest speakers included: Jordan Goldwarg of Kids4Peace and Andrew Larsen of the Evangelical Covenant Church. We served the KAIROS movement across our NW region, extending Trinity & CMEPB's reach. John Berg is the KAIROS Puget Sound Coalition Network Coordinator, connecting many Northwest churches with our Lutheran and other Arab Christian brothers and sisters as they face conflict and injustice by incarnating the love of Christ and Refusing To Be Enemies. We helped enable Christians to meet local Muslims and overcome fear via education, mutual service and building relationships that demonstrate the love of Christ. We participated in the All for Peace and Neighbors in Faith network of Muslims, Christians and other faith communities.

ANNUAL REPORT TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH 20 Cold Weather Shelter Mark Waldin The winter season saw the shelter open 25 nights. A total of 627 beds were served to 146 individuals, averaging 25 people per night. Though we faced a significant number of conflict nights with Edmonds Senior Center for which we had no back-up location, due to warmer temperatures, we were able to skirt all but one. We scrambled at the last minute to find a location, and gather volunteers and were able to open at a later hour. We qualified for a FEMA grant this season that allowed us to pay a shelter manager to stay on-site each night the shelter was open. The goal was to provide continuity and stability for our teams and guests. This was a success, despite the manager becoming ill in late December and unable to finish the season. Of utmost concern, Edmonds Senior Center will no longer be able to host the shelter due to construction starting in We have, however, secured a new location for winter Maple Park Lutheran Brethren will be the new host, with Edmonds Church of God serving as a backup location. Finally, we had two teams quit at the end of the season: Edmonds UMC and one of the teams from St. Thomas More. Replacement teams are needed in order to continue operation and the search is underway. Opening the shelter this fall will be contingent on finding new teams. The season will be the 12th year for CWS. We are blessed to have such a large group of compassionate and kind individuals who put others before their own needs. Their individual and collective efforts have made a positive impact for our homeless neighbors in South Snohomish county and inspired us to persevere amid an uncertain future. Esperanza Mission Trips Cliff Bronson, Deb Johnson We sent two groups on our annual mission trips to Mexico in 2017, one in August, and one in October. A total of 45 participants helped build seven homes in our 19th year (trips 33 & 34!) of serving with Esperanza International. First Impressions Marilyn Hall Didn t know there was such a group? You aren t alone. We are just getting started, and soon will be recruiting more people to help us: Welcome first time visitors; Shephard those visitors into community within our congregation; Provide information about the many ministries we have Watch the What s Happening for more info! Curious? Ask: Marilyn Hall, Sandy Schneider, Shirley Lovelace, Sharon Bloch, Marilyn Thomsen. Neighbors in Need Sharon Bloch, Joan Jolly, John Boone, Chris Frizzell, Paula Brooks, Pat Garrity The support from hundreds of volunteers from our collaborative partners provided another busy year doing our part to help our Neighbors. We wish to thank the many people and groups that have given of their time and money to accomplish this mission, including: Holy Rosary Catholic Church Gloria Dei Lutheran Church St. Thomas More Catholic Church Pemco Insurance Trinity Lutheran Church Annie s Kitchen Edmonds Unitarian Universalists Trader Joe s North Sound Community Church Pointe of Grace Lutheran Church Crossway Fellowship Showers to the People/ Cascade View Presbyterian Lynnwood Chamber of Commerce Cornell Family Concert Edmonds Food Bank St. Mary's Coptic Orthodox Church A New Day Church Korean Community Presbyterian Church Indian Christian Assoc. of Seattle Ahn Family Concert Washed (mobile laundry truck) Hand Up Project The Nest Mission/ Maplewood Presbyterian Church Lynnwood Rotary Lynnwood Human Services As there are few other social service or meal programs on our weekend days, every Saturday morning we provide a warm and safe place where our guests feel welcome. This past year we added health wellness and blood pressure checks, haircuts, and also welcomed our newest member to the leadership and security team, Pat Garrity of the Edmonds Unitarian Universalist Congregation. Despite an improving economy, the number we serve continues to grow. Not counting the children who now meet upstairs with the Neighborhood Youth Alliance, our average continues to increase to 200 or more plates of breakfast served every Saturday morning, and the number of homeless we serve has increased to over 60 each week. We continue to meet several new Neighbors every week that join us for breakfast and fellowship, and are provided weekend supplies from our pantry. In December besides having Christmas with our Neighbors we hosted our sixth South Snohomish County Toy Shop downstairs, assisted by the Unitarians, Alderwood Rotary, Toys For Tots, and Washington Kids in Transition. Low income parents of over 600 children who signed up through the Lynnwood and Mountlake Terrace food banks received Christmas gifts. Training from Pastor Rick Pribbenow, Stephen Ministers, and Verdant has continued to provide this ministry with a solid foundation as we move forward in our growth. The TLC Safe Haven Policy, as well our Safety and Kitchen Policies, and our quarterly meetings with the Lynnwood Police Department Community Health and Safety Officer continue to guide us. Thank you to the staff of Trinity for all that you do for us. Thank you Trinity and Pointe of Grace, for your support during clothing and food drives, for your monetary gifts, and for your Christmas gifts. Thank you the ELCA and the City of Lynnwood Human Services for the financial grants provided this past year. And thanks also to over 50 volunteers who serve our guests every week. Jesus said in Matthew 22:37-38: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it, you shall love your neighbor as yourself. Neighborhood Youth Alliance Marilyn Hall At NYA we help kids, ages 4-18, with academic and social skills through worksheets, games, and arts & crafts. We help them gain interest in school and keep them engaged in their studies by providing help with homework, learning concepts, and sometimes coordinating with their school to them find success. We are looking for youth and adults to volunteer on Saturday mornings from 8-10 AM as this program continues to grow. Pastoral Care Ministers Liz Gimmestad, Joan Jolly Pastoral Care Ministers are a vital part of our pastoral care team at Trinity, and engage people who are struggling with long term illnesses, grieving the loss of a loved one, or are anxious or discouraged about their situation. They have been trained as Stephen Ministers, and receive an additional 400 hours of Clinical Pastoral Education. PCMs follow-up with each prayer request of our faith community, make hospital and home-bound visits, and serve our Neighbors in Need Community on Saturday morning at listening tables. They are also equipped to give communion. Pastor Delmas Luedke, an ACPE certified CPE supervisor, provides leadership, guidance and supervision to the PCMs. He recently retired as the Director of Spiritual Care at Swedish Hospital Medical Center with 20 years of CPE experience and is an ordained pastor of the ELCA. Currently there are seven Pastoral Care Ministers serving both Trinity and Pointe of Grace as well as our community at large. Prayer Shawl Ministry Lois Toroni, Marilyn Thomsen The Prayer Shawl Ministry has had a busy year knitting prayer shawls. It has been a challenge to keep a good supply! We meet the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month. We have about 7 knitters with anywhere from 3 to 6 at each meeting. It is impossible to say how many we knit each year as we do have some "angels" we never see but who do turn one into the office from time to time. It is our privilege to know the prayer shawls are given to people in need of comfort. We welcome anyone interested to join us in this ministry.

Through study and our monthly prayer vigils at the 196th SW and Highway 99 intersection, we have experienced that we each have great power through prayer, letter writing and conscientious consumerism. We currently enjoy a growing partnership in advocacy with Edmonds Unitarian Universalist Church. The positive response from passing vehicles and from pedestrians is truly heartwarming. The people of Lynnwood care and support activism, and we thank God for giving us this mission. We celebrate 11 years on our journey to transform poverty into abundance one life at a time, and are grateful for the prayers, encouragement and generous support of the Trinity and Pointe of Grace staff and congregation. The sewing business in Nicaragua is still active, and the ladies are designing, manufacturing, and selling their crafts. With this income, they support and educate their families. They now work from a permanent room in the medical and education building recently opened by Corner of Love. The next generation of San Ramon residents will begin with a health and education advantage. The chicken business to support Songea s Kids orphanage in Tanzania is thriving! Not only does it provide healthy nutrition for the orphans, it enhances the economy of the region. Other communities are traveling to Songea to copy the project and business model. Stephen Ministry, a part of the Pastoral Care Ministry team at Trinity, has been active in the congregation for 29 years! Stephen Ministers are trained to provide one on one listening care to people who are experiencing significant life changes such as those experiencing grief, job loss, illness, aging, or relationship changes among other life events. There are currently 21 Stephen Ministers who have been commissioned and serve at Trinity including Stephen Leaders. Prior to commissioning, candidates complete 50 hours of classroom training. Once commissioned, Stephen Ministers attend ongoing Supervision sessions twice monthly, which include Continuing Education such as sessions on Brain Injury and Family Caregiving among other topics. In 2017, Stephen Ministers provided over 2240 hours of care through visitation, serving as congregational prayer ministers, and/or bringing the Eucharist to homebound members of our community. Additionally, Stephen Ministers preside over and participate in the monthly Healing Ministry Service held at Trinity Lutheran the first Sunday of each month. In June 2018, an additional Stephen Minister will be commissioned, having completed the 50 hours of classroom training in May. Stephen Ministers stand ready to listen and provide care in confidential and Christ centered partnerships.
