A Short History of Alamance Presbyterian Church Land to build Alamance Presbyterian Church was donated by a local farmer in The congregation was formally organized by the New York Presbytery, in Alamance was under the jurisdiction of the Synod of New York and Philadelphia until 1788, when the General Assembly and the Synod of the Carolinas were organized. The Synod of North Carolina was formed at Alamance Presbyterian Church, in The Rev. David Caldwell was the first pastor here. He served both the Alamance and Buffalo churches, for about sixty years. The Rev. Eli W. Caruthers was the second pastor. He served from During his pastorate, the first Female Benevolent Society in North Carolina (forerunner of the Presbyterian Women) was organized, around The first Sunday school at Alamance was organized in Several area congregations were formed from this congregation. They include: Bethel Presbyterian at McLeansville in 1812 and Greensboro First Presbyterian in 1825 (with Buffalo Church); Pleasant Garden Presbyterian ( ); and the Vandalia Presbyterian Church, in Alamance has long engaged in global and local mission initiatives: Members of the congregation have served as Presbyterian missionaries in China, in the Congo, and in Peru. Work crews have gone to Haiti, to do repairs at the St. Croix Hospital in Léogane. Work crews have gone to Xpujil, Mexico to help build cisterns. Work crews have gone to Peru to drill wells, and to travel on Amazon medical missions ships. Since the first months after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita hit the U.S. Gulf coast in 2005, work crews from Alamance traveled to New Orleans, LA to help in demolition and rebuilding there. Alamance members were among the first to bring hot meals and hope to the victims of the April, 2018 tornado in east Greensboro. This church has supported the work of the Barium Springs Orphan s Home (now the Children s Hope Alliance) since the 1910s. The church was instrumental in founding the Alamance School (now Alamance Elementary School) in the 1920s and when the school burned to the ground in 1945, church classrooms and rooms in the manse became school classrooms until a new school could be built. The church was instrumental in developing the Alamance Volunteer Fire Department now part of the Guilford County system of fire stations. We have worked with Habitat for Humanity since We work closely with Greensboro Urban Ministry, and with the Salvation Army of Greensboro, in their efforts to serve the greater community. Since 2010, Alamance with the help of several local churches and organizations has operated a weekly food pantry from our buildings.. We are proudest of those parts of our history that show a willingness to do God s work in God s world, whenever and wherever needed. Sometimes God needs us to go to the other side of the world; sometimes God needs us to go to the other side of the street. We welcome all to the community of Jesus: to connect, to learn, to worship, to serve.

May 15, th meeting of Salem Presbytery Commissioning Liturgy 7 COMMISSIONING OF PRESBYTERY S TRANSITIONAL GENERAL PRESBYTER SENTENCES OF SCRIPTURE Moderator: ALL: Lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as we were called to the one hope of our calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all. (Ephesians 4:1-6) The Moderator leads the Presbytery in prayer: Moderator: Let us pray. Eternal God, by your grace you have set us together in your Church, whose very foundation is your Son, Jesus Christ. Give your continuing grace, we pray, to all who exercise servant leadership in your Church, that they may with diligence and faithfulness, fulfill their varied ministries. Grant that we, your people, may serve together with them where you lead; through Jesus Christ. Amen. The Moderator reflects on Rev. Scott s preparation for his call as Salem s Transitional General Presbyter, and then poses the following questions to him: Moderator: Steve Scott: Moderator: Moderator-Elect: Steve, do you welcome the responsibility of this service because you are determined to follow the Lord Jesus, to love neighbors, and to work for the reconciling of the world? I do. Will you serve our Presbytery s churches and colleagues with energy, intelligence, imagination, and love, relying on God s mercy and rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit? I will, with God s help. The Moderator then addresses the assembled Presbytery: Moderator: ALL: Do you members, commissioners, and educators of Salem Presbytery confirm the call of God to our brother Steve, as our Transitional General Presbyter. We do.

8 Moderator: ALL: Will you support and encourage him in this ministry of work, worship, and witness? We will. The Moderator leads the Presbytery in prayer: Moderator: ALL: CHARGE Moderator: Faithful and loving God, we thank you for the variety of gifts you have given to Steve. Draw us together in one spirit, that we may support and encourage him in his call, and that each of us may use our own and differing gifts as members of this body. As we who have died and risen with Christ gather at his table and then scatter into the world, may we be one in service to others, in the name of Jesus Christ. Almighty God, in Jesus Christ you called disciples and, by the Holy Spirit, made them one church to serve you. Let your Spirit rule your church, so that we may be joined in love and service to Jesus Christ, who, having gone before us, is coming to meet us in the promise of your kingdom. Amen. Steve, you are commissioned to the call as our Transitional General Presbyter. The Presbytery greets Steve Scott with expressions of welcome and support. Whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God through him. (Colossians 3:17)

May 15, th meeting of Salem Presbytery Executive Council 15 The Rev. Diane Givens-Moffett, Moderator The Executive Council (EC) met on March 15 and April 19, Regular reports were received from the Presbytery staff and David Vaughan, Stated Clerk. For Information The Executive Council: Approved minutes of previous EC and Presbytery meetings; Received updates from the Dream Team, the EC s task force seeking to envision a sustainable programmatic and administrative structure and mission for the Presbytery s future; Adopted dates for 2019 meetings of Presbytery: Tuesday, February 12, 2019 Tuesday, May 14, 2019 Saturday, August 17, 2019 at Jamestown Presbyterian Church Tuesday, November 12, Cancelled its June 2018 meeting (since the General Assembly will be meeting) and changed its December 2018 meeting to December 13. Regarding property of the former Christ Presbyterian Church (High Point): the EC, by consensus, endorsed the plan of the St. Paul (High Point) Session to move to the Christ campus, subject to a formal recommendation by Church Growth and Transformation Committee; and furthermore, agreed to lease (at a very nominal amount and with assurance of adequate property and liability insurance) the Christ property to the St. Paul Session to develop its Vacation Bible School and other worship and educational programming until a report from Church Growth and Transformation can be received; Received an offer of purchase for property owned by Presbytery in Chatham County and, after professional evaluation, agreed on Presbytery s behalf to the sale of the property. This property was acquired by Presbytery for the development of Hispanic ministry in that part of Salem s bounds; Alfredo Miranda reports that the Hispanic ministry in Chatham is being developed and nurtured at an adequate and comfortable location and that the property in question is not needed for Presbytery s use. The EC moved to devote the funds from the sale of property to Hispanic ministry development; Engaged in a preliminary and brief discussion about how Presbytery would, if requested, respond to any event that intensifies political crisis; Reflected regularly on the work, worship, and witness of Salem s congregations and missional organizations. For Action 1. The Executive Council moves the election of the Rev. Ray Mims (HR) and the Rev. Kyle Goodman (Alamance) to a term through December 2020 on the Committee on Representation. 2. The Executive Council asks that the Moderator recognize the Rev. Ron Shive, who will address the Presbytery concerning the work of the Dream Team.

May 15, th meeting of Salem Presbytery Examinations 16 William Hoyle Moderator, Debbie Layman Vice Moderator, Jim Norris Clerk At our March meeting we examined Ann Brinson and Kate Guthrie and recommend their approval by the Presbytery. We also examined William Gipe at our February meeting and recommend his approval by the Presbytery. Faith Journey Ann Williams Brinson God has shaped my faith journey through people and events: family, friends and involvement in various congregations. Nurtured in family heritage and profoundly shaped within the Reformed tradition, I received infant baptism. Confirmation at a large urban church during my formative teen years allowed participation in a congregation struggling with how to serve God amidst racial tensions in the inner city. Discerning a call from God to ministry was truly a mid-life challenge. A Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) unit, focusing on discernment to enter seminary afforded twelve weeks of prayer, and hand-on-ministry in a large hospital. While ministering to both patients and staff at this trauma hospital, I realized that ministry was what God in Jesus Christ had created me to be and do. Called to small church ministry, I have served three congregations. I was ordained as an Interim Minister and really enjoyed helping this community examine its past and discern its future mission. The summer of 2007 was spent covering a pastor s Sabbatical in the lovely town of New Bern, NC. What a joy to facilitate worship, moderate Session and give pastoral care to this hospitable congregation, amidst its ministry of nurturing Myanmar refugees. I also served a typical family size church in eastern North Carolina, which had recently survived a difficult split in the congregation. My Interim Ministry Skills were useful as we moved from woundedness to healing to reaching out through mission to the community and the world. What a great joy to attend this congregation s 100 th Anniversary several months ago and celebrate with them. Through facilitating worship, moderating Session and giving pastoral care in several congregations, I have relished developing one-on-one relationships with both young and old and walking alongside them through the ups and downs of life. I have been privileged to witness and experience their growth in Christian faith. Above all, I have been amazed and awed at God s working in the ministry and mission of these congregations within their particular contexts. Three years ago, I took Honorable Retirement, praying for God s guidance in where to do ministry. A nurse s request to facilitate Sunday morning worship services in the skilled nursing unit at River Landing at Sandy Ridge seems to answer that prayer and also facilitate my spiritual

17 gifts. I eagerly look forward to both to facilitating Sunday morning worship services and giving pastoral care to older adults within this retirement home setting. Statement of Faith Ann Williams Brinson A mysterious, sovereign God, source of all being, created humankind in God s image. Despite humanity s brokenness, a redemptive God reaches out to bring wholeness and healing to a wounded creation. The grace of God is ever present. Jesus embodies God s presence and God s love. In life, he healed the sick, practiced inclusive table fellowship and radically challenged the oppressive structures of his society. In death, he set his face for Jerusalem (Luke 9:51) in obedience to God s will. Through resurrection, the Risen Christ is immanently present in the world, empowering humanity for God s continuing transformation of creation. The Holy Spirit is a God-world relationship. As I transform into the person God has created me to be, the Holy Spirit comforts, guides, sustains and often prods. Indeed, the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness, for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. (Romans 8:28) The Bible is the recorded word of God, revealing historical experiences and oral traditions, out of which Christian faith emerged. The Bible remembers and testifies to Jesus embodiment of God, and our empowerment for God s transformation of creation. Mediated by the Holy Spirit, Scripture is continuing revelation, contemporary to all time and place. The Church is the corporate body of Christ in the world, called into being in response to the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. It is the place where the narrative is preserved, retold and dramatized. The sacraments of Baptism and Lord s Supper liturgically remember God s everpresent grace in the death, resurrection and on-going life of Christ. The community of faith celebrates and witnesses to God s love through prayer, word, worship and a service oriented ministry of reconciliation in the world. Faith Journey Kate Davelaar Guthrie I cannot remember a time when I did not believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. I still firmly believe that Jesus! is the correct answer to most questions; yet my understanding of what this answer signifies has become more nuanced and mysterious. I now see that to receive faith at young age is a beautiful thing, but as an adolescent I had angst over my conversion story. At one point in college questioned whether I needed to be re-baptized so that that I could experience and remember the baptism. I have since come to rest in the fact that as the words of the Reformed Church in America baptismal liturgy states, all this God did for you, little one, even though you know nothing of it yet. I have learned to trust that I did experience my

18 baptism, and that God and others present remember it. I have the opportunity to live into the new identity I received in this baptism every single day. While I do not have a conversion story, I have had multiple conversions along the way. One of the more significant conversions took place when I lived overseas. I learned to see the world differently, while cultivating a spirit of attentiveness to the present moment and utter dependence on God. It was also a conversion in regards to wrestling what it means to be in the minority and seen as the other, while at the same time being one who comes from a background of privilege. Living in the midst of extreme poverty and extreme wealth instilled in me the sense that the Good News is not good news if it is not clearly good news for the poor. A second significant conversion came when I was in seminary and my parents, who had been married for 35 years, suddenly divorced. I found myself in a land of suffering unlike I had ever experienced before. I would not wish the experience on anyone. However, I know that having lived through those years of suffering have attuned me to suffering in ways I was not before, and prepared me for future loss. Suffering has influenced how I pastor, how I relate to others, and how I understand forgiveness and redemption. A third conversion that has deepened over the past number of years is a deep commitment to attempt to live into God s vision for God s people: that the Body of Christ reflects the full diversity of God s creation. As Christians, we believe that God has reconciled all things to himself through Christ (Colossians 1:20). As such we are called to live as reconciled to God and to one other, and are given the ministry of reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:18). Reconciliation is not our doing; it is God s. And it comes with a great responsibility on our part to follow the Spirit s work in becoming God s new creation. As I seek to live in to the ministry of reconciliation, I am certain I will have more conversions along the way. I will continue to trust that the Jesus is the answer, and pray that the Spirit will give me wisdom to seek the right questions. Statement of Faith Kate Davelaar Guthrie I believe in the saving grace of Jesus Christ. As a kid, I could have been the punch line of an ofttold joke from the pulpit. A preacher asks the children of the congregation what is brown, has a fluffy tail, and eats acorns. A kid raises their hand and declares, Jesus! I cannot think of a time when I did not believe in Jesus. My love of Christ and trusting in His love for me shapes me, guides me, and grounds me. For most of my life, I articulated the connection between the relationship between faith and salvation simply as this: we are saved through our faith in Christ, who died for us on the cross. While I do not believe that this statement is untrue, I now believe there is more to it than this. Or, more aptly, perhaps what has changed is my understanding of the scope of Christ s work on the cross. I wonder if what happened on the cross the magnitude and depth to which this event touched, shaped, and changed the story of humanity and all of creation is more mysterious than we can possibly fathom. The mystery that by Christ s work on the cross, and through the power of the Spirit, we have union with Christ. The mystery that in

19 Christ we have been justified, through the Spirit we are being sanctified, and that someday we will be glorified. Somehow I am both more certain of this than ever, find it more mysterious than ever. I believe in the triune God: Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer. I believe the Holy Spirit connects us with God and with each other. It is through the Spirit that we are able to understand Scripture and it is through this understanding that we are given access to a new way of living together and being together in this world. I believe the Spirit to be both mighty in power and gently comforting. The Spirit prompts us towards a fuller, richer and more Shalom-ful world. I believe in a God who suffers alongside as we live in the tension of already but not yet reign of the Kingdom of God. We are called to do all we can to usher the not yet into the already and this requires action and imagination. The more we can imagine (and encourage the church to imagine) what the Kingdom of God is like, the more likely we are to seek and work for this imagined world to become our reality. I believe God is the One who calls and the One who sends. That God trusts humans to work alongside Him in the work of bringing God s reign more fully present in this world is an incredible honor (and some might say foolish on God s part!). I believe, more than ever, that Jesus is calling us to deepen our commitment to the body of Christ and learn to nurture and lean into this community in new ways. cause i haven't come for only you but for my people to pursue you cannot care for me with no regard for her if you love me you will love the church* *Derek Webb, The Church, She Must and She Shall Go Free (Integrity Music, 2002). Faith Journey William Gipe I was born into a Christian home. Both my father and mother served in the Presbyterian Church as ruling elders. I was baptized as an infant and raised in the church, specifically, the First Presbyterian Church of Kingsport, Tennessee. In my eighth-grade year, through a combination of an excellent confirmation class at my church and the wisdom and example of an outstanding Fellowship of Christian Athletes leader, I was moved to make my public profession of faith. I attended college at Wake Forest University. Upon graduation from college in 1988, I got married and received a job as a Certified Public Accountant with Arthur Andersen and Company in Greensboro, North Carolina. After a year or two in that field, I began to feel a call to the ministry. I had first encountered that call back in confirmation class but had not paid it much attention. Now I was paying more attention. With the support of my wife, who was and remains a better disciple of Christ than I am, I enrolled in Union Seminary in Richmond, Virginia. I have felt confirmed in my call ever since. Upon graduation from seminary in 1994, I became the pastor of a two-church field in southwestern Virginia (Wise County). I remained in that call for 23 years (July, 1994 through August, 2017). Our time in that call was healthy and rewarding.

20 God has been very gracious in giving us a great place to minister and to raise a family. The churches have grown both in depth and in number. We moved to North Carolina in September of 2017 to be closer to my wife s parents as they age. They live in Huntersville. My wife of 29 years is Stacey Butler Gipe. She is a family practice Physician Assistant and now works for Carolinas Health Care. My son Will is 24 years old. He is married. His wife Amber is an elementary school teacher and he works on the men s basketball coaching staff at the University of Richmond. My daughter Laura is 22 years old and is an English major at Virginia Tech. My one sibling, my brother Robert, is 54 years old and is an educator and author who lives and works in Harlan county Kentucky. I look forward to what is next in God s plan for the journey. Statement of Faith William Gipe I believe there is One True God and we are made for relationship with Him. I believe the One True God is the Father of the Lord Jesus Christ. I affirm we know this God through His divinelyinspired word, commonly known as the Old and New Testaments. I believe the One True God is one in essence and three in persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Father created freely out of love and a desire to share His love with His creation. I affirm God has given me the only life I will ever have. That alone is enough for me to owe Him everything and serve Him with my life. I affirm the Father has done much more. He has sent the Son. God created the world good. Human beings, in their rebellion from the Lordship of God, sinned and caused the creation to fall. That fall brought death, dysfunction and destruction to the good creation. Jesus Christ, by His life of perfect obedience culminating in His death on the cross, won the eternal victory over the power of sin and death. That victory was announced, and Christ's work and claims were validated, in His bodily resurrection from the dead. I affirm that I am a sinner and have broken my relationship with God through my sin. I affirm that I cannot repair this relationship through my own good works. I affirm my need for a Savior. I rely solely and completely upon the saving work of Jesus Christ on the cross for the forgiveness of my sins and the restoration of my relationship with God. I am saved by grace alone through faith in Jesus Christ alone. I affirm that faith in Jesus Christ and His work on the cross is the only way a person can be brought into a restored relationship with the One True God. I affirm that the resurrected Christ, after bodily appearing to His disciples and many others, ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father, ruling and interceding on behalf of His church. I believe that Christ did not leave His people, the church, without His presence and power when He returned to the Father. The Holy Spirit was (and is) sent to empower the church. The Holy Spirit grows His fruit (character) in Christians and gives His gifts (abilities) and wisdom and strength to the members of the Body that then enable the church to fulfill its mission. That mission includes: making disciples of all nations, bearing the burdens of those in need, showing the love of God to the world, working for the justice of God in the world and of being salt and light in the world so as to draw people to the Lord Jesus Christ and to bring honor and glory to the Father. I embrace and enjoy being a part of this church. The church is sustained and empowered as the Holy Spirit works in it through the preaching the word, the administration of the sacraments of baptism and the Eucharist, the love and fellowship of sisters and brothers and the proper discipline of the church. I affirm this great savior, Jesus Christ, deserves my love, my primary loyalty, my best

effort and my deepest hope. I endeavor to give Him these. I fail in this effort because I am a great sinner. I am humbled by that reality. The Good News is that He is a great Savior of sinners. I have put my trust and hope in Christ. I believe that hope in Jesus Christ will not be disappointed. I have great confidence in that reality. I believe He will complete all the good work He has begun in us. Finally, Christ will return and establish His eternal kingdom. That Kingdom will be a place of joy, of eternal life and of deepest relationship with God and with all the redeemed creation. I look forward to that Day. Until that Day, I affirm I will seek His face and His power and will endeavor to be as faithful as I can be to my Lord. I will invite and encourage others to do the same, to the glory of God alone. 21

The Presbytery has sponsored two Medical Mission trips to Ocosingo, Mexico thus far in Over the two weeks, thirteen travels with medical skills served over 1,500 people at Los Manos de Cristo (the hands of Christ) Clinic which was built by churches in the Presbytery ten years ago. Two hundred folks received eye glasses donated by congregations. Donated medical supplies were carried to restock the Clinic. Some 198 clean water filters were distributed and the people were trained in how to use and maintain them. (Contaminated water is the source of many of the diseases encountered by our medical teams.) The lives of many men, women and children were greatly impacted by these mission efforts. Mission travelers are invited again to go in mission to southern Mexico in June to assist in building a camp for Presbyterian youth in the area. 39 May 15, th meeting of Salem Presbytery Dedication and Commissioning 39 A Covenant Liturgy for Dedication and Commissioning of General Assembly Ruling Elders and Teaching Elders Stated Clerk: All: Stated Clerk: All: We stand this day within the new covenant made by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and we bear his name. In the strength of the covenant that God has made with us, let us bind ourselves anew to God, who has so graciously bound with us. And let us gladly share in accepting the yoke of Jesus Christ as we dedicate, commission, and covenant with those who stand among us this day, sharing in the yoke of worship, learning, and serving at the 223 rd General Assembly: Ken Broman-Fulks, Ty Buckner, Lindsay Conrad, James Harley, Felicia Stewart Hoyle, Emily Larsen, Lee Woods, and Dianna Wright. Christ has many services to be done; some are easy, some are difficult; some bring sorrow, others bring reproach; some are suited to our natural inclinations and material interests, others are contrary to both. In some, we please Christ and please ourselves, in others we cannot please Christ except by denying ourselves. Yet the power to do all things is given us in Christ who strengthens us. The Transitional General Presbyter leads the Presbytery in prayer: General Presbyter: All: God of love and faithfulness, you have appointed our Lord Jesus Christ as mediator of a new covenant. Give Salem Presbytery grace to join ourselves with you, unite in following where you lead, and dedicate, commission, and set aside this day these members as Ruling Elder and Teaching Elder Commissioners for the 223 rd General Assembly. We are no longer our own, but yours. Put us with what you will, rank us with whom you will; put us to doing, put us to suffering; let us be employed for you or laid aside for you, exalted for you or brought low for you; let us be full, let us be empty; let us have all things, let us have nothing; we freely and wholeheartedly yield all things to your pleasure and disposal. May this covenant with those who worship and serve you, now made on earth, be ratified in heaven, to the glory of your name. Amen. (The Book of Common Order Church of Scotland 1994 ed.)

241 ST SYNOD OF THE MID ATLANTIC HIGHLIGHTS MARCH 12-13, 2018 Square Pegs in Round Holes - Can a square peg really fit into a round hole? Yes, if you are Presbyterian. Try it! I suspect this model of visioning and decision-making has averted the church from creating conducive venues to stimulate minds and bring the beloved community closer. The 241 st Assembly is a reminder of the contemporary Gospel song, Come on in for the table is spread and the feast of the Lord is going on. Nearly 45 commissioners, corresponding members, presenters, and guests showed up! The square/round table set-up was large enough to accommodate everyone. It enabled the Assembly to address its business matters. Plenary sessions were generative in nature. They were facilitated in a very large circle setting. As Presbyterians gathered from across the region, we united under the theme from Ezekiel 37:1-6. As a result, God blew a fresh Spirit of boldness and generosity upon the Synod s dry bones! At the conclusion of two days of working, praying, worshipping, debating and fellowshipping, the results affirmed that God s Spirit is alive and well in and across the synod. God can place square Presbyterians into circles of faith that work. Square pegs can fit into round holes! Unexpected Gift How does a Mid-Council respond to an unanticipated financial gift of $40,000.00? The synod was the recipient of such a gift during the 241 st Assembly. Presbytery Executive Jim Moseley and Vice-Moderator Elect Mawuna Gardesey made a special presentation to Synod Moderator Claterbaugh. With a mouth gapping the Moderator murmured Thank You. The check was in support of the Speer Trust Fund, a foundation in Delaware focused on alleviating the root causes of poverty. The synod has been a regular beneficiary of Speer Trust Funds but as New Castle Presbytery moves to a new model of ministry and leadership, the future funding from Speer Trust is in question. This check was one way of expressing Gratitude to the synod for its outreach and impactful ministries. The Synod Speer Trust Fund Committee awards grants to churches and organizations across the region engaged in this special ministry. Synod s priorities of addressing Race and White Privilege continued as Jim Moseley introduced three noteworthy scholars who are experts in their subject. Each brought groundbreaking facts that educated and strengthened commissioner s resolve of allowing their Christian values to outweigh hate and hostility. Rev. Dr. Jon Barton is the General Minister of the Virginia Council of Churches and resides in Richmond VA Rev. Veronica Cannon is the Interim Pastor of Avondale Presbyterian Church and resides in Charlotte NC Rev. Dr. Jerry L. Cannon is Senior Pastor of CN Jenkins Memorial Presbyterian Church and resides in Charlotte NC Doctrine of Discovery Retiring VCC General Minister, Jon Barton, transformed the Assembly into a History Classroom. An ardent supporter for Native American State and Federal Recognition, Barton introduced the Doctrine of Discovery. This was new information to most persons present. This doctrine or law was placed into action by European monarchs in order to legitimize the colonization of lands outside of Europe. It allowed European entities to seize lands inhabited by indigenous people under the guise of discovery. In 2000, VCC was invited by six Virginia Tribes to support them in seeking Federal Recognition. Jon has personally provided testimony to various committees of the US House and US Senate for the purpose of garnering recognition of six Virginia Tribes (Chickahominy, Chickahominy Eastern Division, Monacan, Nansemond, Rappahannock and Upper Mattaponi). These tribes have been largely overlooked. 1

As a result of the systematic discrimination created by the Virginia 1924 Racial Integrity Act, their records have been altered and destroyed by official acts of the Commonwealth. Passage of the federal legislation would enable these recognized tribes to become eligible for up to $12 million per year in federal Indian Health and Indian Education benefits. Most powerful to Barton s presentation was the reminder that The Doctrine of Discovery was used by the Christian Church which gave divine blessing and calling to European monarchs. The impact of this doctrine is felt today. Racism and White Privilege are alive and present in the church more than ever. Recognition means validation of one s personhood and value. The Catawba Story is also new to many; however, for Veronica Cannon this story is real talk. On October 6, 1866, the Catawba Presbytery was organized just after the end of the Civil War. Northern missionaries saw the newly liberated African Americans as objects of mission and began to evangelize. Hence, congregations were organized; presbyteries were created as well as synods related to the Northern Presbyterian Church. In 1887, the General Assembly organized the Catawba Synod which would be made up of the presbyteries of Catawba, Cape Fear, Yadkin and Southern Virginia. Since its inception, Catawba had strong ties to Johnson C. Smith and Barber Scotia College. These institutions of higher learning prepared men, women and young people for leadership in Black Presbyterian Churches and communities. The churches, presbytery and synod produced prophetic Presbyterian Leadership. Men and women were catapulted into civil rights leaders. Many became ardent advocates for social justice changes. However, with the 1983 Reunion of the PCUS and UPC, these presbyteries and synod were dissolved. Restructuring lead to African Americans feeling a loss of their voices and clearly diminished their presence and participation. Racial Ethnic ministries ended, mission functions ended and advocacy groups lost their seats on the council. Cannon challenged Commissioners to restore the lost voices, fund educational opportunities to help African Americans leaders to become stronger in their communities and across the denomination. Several commissioners bore witness to her presentation as they were alums of Scotia and Smith and/or products of churches that came out of Catawba or a similar history. Jerry Cannon is an effective practitioner in ministry and is Senior Pastor of the largest African American Presbyterian Church in the Synod and possibly the PCUSA. Jerry knows a lot about rationales for a new African American initiative. In fact, he is a walking and living history for the impact of the Catawba Presbytery and Synod. Jerry was the last Teaching Elder to be ordained by Catawba Presbytery. His sister, Rev. Dr. Katie Cannon, is the first African American female to be ordained in the Presbyterian Church by Catawba Presbytery. Jerry s presentation focused on providing a rationale for this new initiative. He charged the assembly to invest in the Next Generation of African American Leaders. He provided 10-key poignant themes: (1) Point the Next Generation of Christian Leaders to God, 2) Make them our primary focus, 3) Be in it for the Long Haul, 4) Allow for mistakes, 5) Foster authentic and long lasting relationships with them, 6) Teach them Structure and Orderliness, (7) Investing in the Next Generation requires hard work and financial investment, (8) Be prepared to step aside for the next generation but work alongside of them, (9) He stressed the importance of accountability and for all of us to hold each other accountable in terms of spiritual discipline and recruitment, and (10) Finally, he encouraged all to engage in the discipline of Prayer. Connectionalism Catherine Lynch, Presbyterian Church Investment & Loan Program (PILP) Development Specialist represents Synods of the Trinity and Mid-Atlantic covering the East coast (New Jersey to North Carolina). Catherine demonstrated beautifully the connectional nature between the General Assembly, Synods, presbyteries and congregations by delivering Rebate Checks to commissioners from six presbyteries. In turn, presbyteries are asked to present rebate checks to individual churches during their 2

presbytery meetings. Checks could range from more than $50.00 to $10, depending on the amounts a particular congregation, presbytery or synod has invested. Churches from Baltimore, Eastern Virginia, Salem, Shenandoah, WNC and National Capital Presbyteries were benefactors. Thanks Catherine and PILP. (f) Committed $10, to the Baltimore Presbytery COLA for the 2020 General Assembly. The possibility of more funding at a later date can be sought. Grants and Awards Committee chaired by Jim Kirkpatrick (EVA) reported that Peacemaking/Global Witness applications have increased resulting from an informational letter having been sent to the synods 14 presbyteries in December. $25, of Peacemaking funds was reallocated to underwrite Administrative Commission cost which will address concerns that the synod has about AKAP. Grants, Scholarships and Awards were approved for the following: Peacemaking Offering funded projects at Ben Salem (CHA) Forklift Training Program - $5,000; Davidson College (CHA) Immersion Trip for college students - $7,500; Milner Memorial (NHO) Creation of a space for community groups to foster stronger community relationships - $5,500; and Virginia Law Enforcement Assistance Program VALEAP, (JAM) to support police officers involved in traumatic incidents - $20,000. Euler Scholarship funded Christopher Speaks in the amount of $7,500. Presbytery Initiative Committee welcomed Cindy Privette (ABI) as its new chair. The committee s purpose is to respond to initiatives by two or more presbyteries. This cycle, the committee received and approved an application for a Retreat for Presbytery Leadership in the amount of $3, (NHO/CCC Presbyteries). This retreat is aimed at exploring ways to enhance relationships and encourage healing between Presbytery leadership and wounded congregations. Nominating Committee Susanne Taylor is Synod Moderator Elect and Mawuna Gardesey is Vice Moderator Elect. The following Presbyteries have vacancies on synod committees. AKAP: Jubilee; EVA: Representation and Speer; JAM: Nominating; PEA: Representation. 3

Executive Committee summarized its work between Assemblies. A recommendation to form an Administrative Commission (AC) to address the life, health, and vitality of the Atlantic Korean American Presbytery was approved. Further, the Synod Moderator and Stated Clerk were authorized to name seven persons to serve on the commission with at least half being Korean. After allowing time for debate, the 241 st Assembly approved the AC and prayer was offered by Commissioner Keith Page (BAL) on behalf of AKAP. THE NEXT GENERATION INITIATIVE PROPOSAL was distributed Monday evening. Tuesday morning, Commissioners were given additional time to read it as they gathered in the huge circle. Moseley then read the proposal aloud with everyone listening attentively. Presenters J. Barton, V. Cannon and J. Cannon joined the group in Plenary One which provided ample opportunity for commissioners to interact with them. Discussion evolved around the churches complicity in the Doctrine of Discovery and the unintended impact of the 1983 Reunion which resulted in dissolving All Black Governing Bodies. One commissioner compared this event to a Presbyterian Church member who was forced to give up her home because government chose to build a road through it. One commissioner remarked, What have we done in the name of Jesus Christ? Some feel that complacency is the enemy and the millennials are not complacent, they want change NOW! Purposefully, Jim placed the Assembly in a position to make a decision about the Next Generation Initiative as he identified the relationships between the presentations and the new initiative. Synod of the Living Waters is noted for developing water systems for third world countries. Synod of the Sun is known for developing solar panels to use in countries and areas where electricity is unavailable. What will the Synod of the Mid-Atlantic be known for and whom shall we serve? Commissioners did not hesitate approving the Next Generation Initiative. The 241 st Assembly empowered the Executive Committee to appoint a team to plan a strategy to move the Initiative forward to include such features as (a) conversation and collaboration with identified partners, (b) a timeline for actions and engagement, (c) a process to share the Initiative with member presbyteries, (d) a projection of funding needs, and (e) considerations for staff support and consultation. The sum of $ was approved from Presbytery Initiatives Funds for the team to cover expenses related to meetings, travel, production, interviews, research etc. The Initiative is on the Synod s website at Synod Stated Clerk reported that the PCUSA Freedom Rising Pilot Initiative is taking specific action to confront the societal and racial issues facing black communities in the U.S. by living into a new church initiative to address the plight of African American males in our country. Four presbyteries are out of compliance with the synod standing rules and the clerks of each presbytery will be notified of such: 1) NAT elected two ruling elders instead of one teaching and one ruling elder, 2) NHO elected two teaching elders instead of one teaching and one ruling elder, 3) PEA elected two teaching elders instead of one teaching and one ruling elder, 4) SAL elected one commissioner. All but Peaks Presbytery completed its per capita giving in The Synod Stated Clerk and Peaks Transitional General Presbyter are working to address this. Concerns continue to evolve about the life, health and vitality of the Atlantic Korean American Presbytery. Judicial and Civil Cases have occurred in this matter. The Synod Executive and Stated Clerk, Warren J. Lesane, Jr., has been elected vice-chair of the Presbyterian Mission Agency Board. The Assembly instructed the Synod Moderator and Stated Clerk to communicate with all General Presbyters/Stated Clerks in the Synod of the Mid-Atlantic encouraging them to talk with commissioners attending the 223 rd General Assembly about the proposed per capita increase. Dates for upcoming Synod Assemblies are March 11-12, 2019 and September 13-14, 2019 at Ginter Park PC. 4
