I m not so much looking for a particular kind of church as I am looking for where God s calling me to be. Wherever I go, I look forward to a new opportunity to seek God with those whom he has put in that place. I am a combination of old and new. I grew up being involved in a variety of church experiences ranging from high church traditional to early contemporary. Over the years, I have continued to be involved in creating meaningful worship experiences using both traditional and contemporary settings. I have the wisdom of age, and the freshness of having recently been back to college. I am conversant with new technologies, and with not-so-new practices. All of these can be put to use, or just some of these, depending on the needs of a particular situation. Accomplishments in present call: I m currently seeking my first call as a teaching elder, but have already been serving in the church as a ruling elder, worship leader, and program coordinator for many years, and it has partly been through my growth in those roles that I came to be seeking an ordained call. Most recently, I have been serving in a pastoral role through my internship at Fair Play Presbyterian Church, and as a chaplain at Greenville Memorial Hospital in the CPE program. In the nine months I spent at Fair Play, I helped with many different areas. As part of their spiritual development program, I coordinated the publishing of an Advent devotional book and a guidebook for their outdoor trail prayer walk. I helped to expand their Helping Hands ministry s program for home visits. I also developed a new worship service for the fifth Sunday of each month using a non-traditional format. At Greenville Memorial, I answer calls for chaplain visits throughout the hospital, and am responsible for monitoring needs in their OB and NICU areas. In all these areas I am working to help people to know God s love and grace, and to grow in their spiritual walk. Leadership Style: The pastor s job is to equip the saints for ministry in the church and in the world. To do that requires a balance of firmness and flexibility. Using both, I strive to encourage people to seek God and grow in their knowledge and practice of God s ways and purposes. A church is a group of people with a variety of interests and abilities, and with different learning styles and comfort levels. I endeavor to be flexible enough to accommodate this variety, while keeping us unified through our focus on Jesus Christ as our head. In him all things hold together! Key Theological Issues: Probably one of our greatest concerns today is that churches are declining. Along with this is the reality that being a church-goer or a Christian is no longer a standard expectation. In some areas, being a Christian is even quite unpopular. I believe the starting point for solving this is to help the people within the church through a process of discernment to seek God and hear his call for them, and from there to discover how to put that call into action, and bring God s love to those around us. People still have the same basic needs food, shelter, and love. If we are willing to seek God with all our hearts, and follow him wherever he leads, we can be his ambassadors to our little corner of the world. Each congregation is a unique set of people with a unique set of gifts, so their call may not look the same as the church down the street. Another concern is that we can get too focused on broader denominational or global issues and lose sight of the day-to-day needs and opportunities for ministry within our particular congregation and community. It is good to work together on the bigger issues, but we need to continually be seeking God s guidance so that we keep our perspective. Jesus told his disciples to be witnesses to Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8). This vision takes in those in our immediate area, as well as those in an ever-widening circle. With this as a guide, we can work to balance the allocation of time and money accordingly. Statement of Faith:

5 My faith is the foundation of my life, and the lens through which I see the world. At the center is my trust in our triune God. God is sovereign over all things, and does not change. I am thankful for the assurance that God s mercy is new every morning, that God s steadfast love endures forever, and that our Lord is slow to anger and always righteous. As Moses found when he asked God to show me your glory, God s glory is goodness, and that goodness, which is revealed in God s Word and works, brings us life. Our Creator's great goodness and love for us is most evident through the sacrifice of Jesus, God's only son. God is righteous and just, which puts us at odds with God because although we are made in the image of God, we are also sinful and fall short of that image. God s plan of reconciliation is realized in Jesus Christ, the second person of the Trinity. Christ is the Word made flesh. He became fully human while still being fully divine in order to reveal God to us and to accomplish our salvation through his death and resurrection. By grace through faith in Christ, we are reconciled with God. By his life and death, Christ showed us the great depth of God s love for us, and the breadth of God s righteousness and mercy. Jesus is the author and perfecter of our faith, and by this faith we find the full life and joy which God intends for us, including spending eternity with God. God s work in us is accomplished by the power of the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Godhead. The Spirit is the counselor, teacher and comforter that Jesus promised. The Holy Spirit draws us to God and guides us in our seeking. The Spirit intercedes for us when we don t know how to pray. Through the work of the Holy Spirit we grow to understand God s great love for us, and it is the Holy Spirit that enables us to share that love with others. Although we can have a relationship with God in Christ that is personal and individual, we cannot fully realize God s plan by ourselves. Learning to be all that God made us to be requires that we also join with others, to encourage one another, to be accountable to one another, and to love one another. This life lived in community is the church, of which Christ is the head. Together we live out God s commandments, including Jesus command to celebrate the Lord s Supper and baptism. As we commune together, we are coming to Christ and renewing our commitment to follow him, and we are a testament to the work of the Holy Spirit in us, binding us together as one body. In baptism, the Holy Spirit binds us to our Creator. Baptism signifies our inclusion in God s grace and our adoption as his children. Together as the church we seek God, grow in our understanding and love of God through study of his inspired Word, and endeavor to glorify and enjoy God as we also work to be God s ambassadors to the world around us, so that others might also be reconciled in Christ and know God s incredible love forever.
