1 OT 577 Biblical Theology: Old Testament Focus Fall 2015 Instructor: Carol Kaminski Tuesdays 2:00pm 5:00pm Student lunches (brown bag): [sign-up sheet outside my office door, AC 136] Mondays, 12:15pm 1:00pm. Fridays, 12:15pm 1:00pm. Office Hours: [no sign-up sheet, just stop by my office, AC 136] Mondays: 1:00pm 2:30pm. Thursdays: 11:00am 12:30pm. Provisional Course Outline 1. Course Objectives: The primary objective of this course is to introduce students to biblical theology (with a focus on the Old Testament), with the goal of preparing students for preaching and teaching with a biblical-theological hermeneutic. This will be achieved by lectures and class discussions on central biblical themes, weekly reading assignments, and a biblical-theology paper. In this course emphasis will be placed on the central role of covenants in the Old Testament and their various historical-redemptive settings within the larger redemptive narrative. As a result of this course, a student should demonstrate knowledge of central biblical themes in the Old Testament and the ability to use the tools of biblical theology in preaching and teaching (Gordon-Conwell Mission Statement #1 2). Course Requirements: 1. Reading requirements and weekly reading report [worth 20% of your final grade] 1. Selected Readings from The New Dictionary of Biblical Theology: Exploring the Unity and Diversity of Scripture, eds. B. Rosner, T.D. Alexander (IVP, 2000). [Required textbook] 2. Bauckham, R., Bible and Mission: Christian Witness in a Postmodern World (Baker Academic, 2003) In addition to the above Dictionary and Bauckham s book, several other articles or chapters from books have been assigned for this course (see schedule below). Each week you are required to write a one-page summary (double-spaced) on each article or chapter, and bring a hard copy of your chapter summary to class with you, which will be used for the class discussion. Your reading report will be checked off each week. On the last day of class (Dec 8) you will submit all your reading reports, as one hard copy stapled together. Failure to complete the required readings prior to class will result in a grade penalty for this assignment. You will be called upon in class to discuss the weekly readings, and you are required to incorporate the readings into your final exam. 2. Biblical Theology Paper [worth 40% of your final grade] You are required to write a 10 page (double spaced) paper on one of the biblical passages below. You are to locate your passage in the redemptive story of the Bible, and then trace the theme in the Old Testament and discuss how it is taken up in the New Testament. This is not an exegesis paper, but you are required to incorporate three Hebrew word studies into your essay, showing how these words help to trace a key biblical theme. At the conclusion of your paper, you are required to provide a three-page outline of a six-week Bible study on this theme, summarizing briefly the topic for each week, citing key biblical texts that will be discussed, and any resources that you might use for this study. This is to be two pages in length only. Your paper will conclude with a

2 bibliography, which is in addition to the 10 page essay and 3 page outline of a bible study. Passages and biblical themes: 1. Promise of children to Abraham (Gen 18:9-15) 2. Idolatry (Exod 32:1-4) 3. Sabbath and the exodus from Egypt (Deut 5:12-15) 4. Atonement and the high priest (Lev 16:1-6) 5. The coming king endowed with salvation (Zach 9:9-10) 6. Bethlehem and the hope of a Davidic king (Mic 5:1-5) 7. The New Covenant (Jer 31:31-34) Hebrew word studies: For students who have not taken Hebrew (no prior knowledge of Hebrew is required or expected for this 500-level course). In order to trace important biblical themes, it is extremely helpful to know how to do Hebrew word studies. To this end, you will taught the Hebrew alphabet, and you will be taught how to do basic Hebrew word studies using Strong s numbers so that you can do the word studies for your paper. 4. Final Exam: worth 40% of your final grade The final exam will comprise of an essay question related to the class lectures and readings. You will be given two of the following essay questions, and you are to choose one essay question. You should be able to interact with the readings in your essay, and your answer should reflect a biblical-theological understanding of the topic which includes citing biblical texts from both the OT and the NT to support your answer. Essay Questions: 1. Summarize Bauckham s thesis in The Bible and Mission. What contribution does this make to Biblical Theology? How does the biblical theme of mission run through the Old Testament? Discuss key Old Testament passages in your answer, along with key NT passages showing how Jesus fulfills this. 2. Summarize the Four Views on the Historical Adam. Why is the historicity of Adam important for Biblical Theology? How does Enns interpret Adam? Why is Adam central to Biblical Theology? What is your view? Discuss key Old Testament and New Testament passages in your answer. 3. Summarize the flood story in terms of God s judgment, Noah s righteousness, and the covenant God makes with Noah and all flesh. How is the flood cited in the Old and New Testaments? Explain Rob Bell s view about God s judgment. How does love win according to Bell? How does a biblical theology of the flood and final judgement contribute to the discussion? What is your view of God s role as judge? 4. Summarize the Abrahamic promises. Why are they central to Biblical Theology? How does Clines define the promises? Discuss the promise of many descendants in particular, noting why this is important for understanding the redemptive story of the Bible and the church today. 5. Summarize the Mosaic covenant in the Old Testament, citing key passages. How does the concept of works inform the covenant, and how does this apply in the OT and in the NT? How is the covenant fulfilled in the NT and what is the role of works of the law? 6. Summarize the Davidic covenant in the Old Testament, citing key passages. How is the covenant being realized in the Old Testament? What are the key promises? How does the Mosaic covenant intersect with the Davidic covenant? How is the Davidic covenant fulfilled in the New Testament? 2 P a g e
