3 A Word from the Pastor Dear Friends A new year is upon us and we are excited. There is so much to do and so much for us to see in our faith. This past Friday we were gathered at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred heart in Newark for the installation of our new Cardinal of Newark, Joseph William Tobin, CSsR. It has a nice ring to it, eh? Newark has never had a Cardinal before and usually (according to history and tradition), we shouldn t have one. The USCCB (United Conference of Catholic Bishops) gives us a rundown with 18 US cardinals. Six are leading US Archdioceses, four are not currently Diocesan Bishops (they are working at the Vatican in different posts); eight of the total number are retired. So, with six active we have 16.66% of the US Cardinals in our Archdiocese. That is really a good thing. Dioceses that normally have had cardinals in the past, are finding that they no longer do. Largely populated dioceses were often considered to have cardinals such as Chicago, Philadelphia and New York, to name a few. Interestingly, Los Angeles and Chicago have a sitting new Archbishop but they were not named as cardinals yet, because their previous archbishops are still of voting age in the Consistory. (Bishops submit their resignations at 75, but cardinals retain there voting rights until 80). So, we have seen that the red hats (birettas) and capes are being distributed in some unexpected places. Appointments for men in Tonga, Myanmar and Santiago de Cabo Verde confirm the pope s interest in building a genuinely global church where ecclesiastical power is not concentrated so mightily in Europe. The cardinal's primary responsibility is to serve as advisors and assistants to the pope as he completes his duties as supreme pastor. The word cardinal comes from the Latin word card, meaning: hinge. Historically, that has been the work of cardinals. A pope may make changes because he believes that there are too many cardinals in one country when compared to another, or he may wish to recognize the work of a particular cleric or theologian. Popes send important signals about their values and hopes for the church when they make or withhold appointments. The Vatican s chief spokesman, Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, said the choices showed the pope s most important criteria was universality, and indicated he was not chained to tradition as he moves the balance of power at the highest levels of the church closer to the developing world. It s a brave new year and we are looking forward to it. God Bless you, Cardinal Tobin. Thanks for coming to the Archdiocese of Newark. I will share a secret with you...i have already invited the new Cardinal Tobin to visit us this year. Please remember the Three Kings will be joining us today at 1pm. Get those letters to Jesus written! Peace, Fr. George Update December 23, Parish Goal: $717,854 Pledge Total: $242,423 Cash Received: $111,244 Parish Portion: $10,622 Pledges Received: 125 A Big...for being faithful to your pledge and continuing to fulfill it. It s not too late to send in your pledge! Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) ARE YOU SOMEONE OR DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO Has expressed an interest in becoming Catholic? Has a child over the age of seven who has not been baptized? Was baptized Catholic as a child, but has not celebrated the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist? We offer an opportunity to come together in a small group to learn more about our faith. You are welcome to participate in the process with your questions, your insights and your faith story in a warm accepting setting. For information please contact: Jim Kenny at the Church Office jnkenny@churchofthenativitynj.com

Parish School Building Dear Parishioners of Nativity, We welcome the opportunity to have the school back in use, but recognize the potential loss in revenue from vacancy and lower lease fees will result in a budget shortfall. As a result, budget revisions and cost cutting are in process. More importantly, let us join together in prayer that the Lord will send us a new tenant. Fr. George Heavenly Father, You know the good work of our outgoing tenant for those with disabilities. The care and comfort of their students was a privilege for Church of the Nativity, and it falls greatly into our mission as Catholics. Dearest St. Joseph, foster father of our Lord Jesus Christ and spouse of our Mother Mary, I invoke your help in finding a very good tenant for our school. A tenant that will be a good steward to our property just like you when you were entrusted with the care of the Holy Family. St. Joseph, please intercede for our parish and school building. We, as a parish, ask you to hear our prayer. Through Christ our Lord. This Sunday 1:00PM After the 12:00 Mass Don t Miss It!
