3 A Word from the Pastor An icon (from Greek εἰκών eikōn "image") is a religious work of art, most commonly a painting, from the Eastern Orthodox Church, Oriental Orthodoxy, and certain Eastern Catholic churches. The most common subjects include Christ, Mary, saints and/or angels. Though especially associated with "portrait" style images concentrating on one or two main figures, the term also covers most religious images in a variety of artistic media produced by Eastern Christianity, including narrative scenes. Icons may also be cast in metal, carved in stone, embroidered on cloth, painted on wood, done in mosaic or fresco work, printed on paper or metal, etc. Comparable images from Western Christianity are generally not described as "icons", although "iconic" may be used to describe a static style of devotional image. The Annunciation "Today is the beginning of our salvation," proclaims the Orthodox Church's troparion (hymn) for the Annunciation. Celebrated on March 25, exactly nine months before Christmas, this feast is dedicated to the announcement of Gabriel to the Virgin Mary that she would conceive by the Holy Spirit and give birth to God in the flesh. The Archangel Gabriel was sent from God to greet the Virgin, saying, "Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you! Blessed are you among women!" He told her that she would bear a Son and name Him Jesus, and that He would be the Messiah of Israel and the Savior of the world. In humility, Mary accepted this news, saying, "I am the handmaid of the Lord." The icon depicts Mary seated, spinning a roll of thread. An ancient Christian tradition explains that she was repairing the curtain of the Temple the same curtain that would be torn when Jesus died. Her head is bowed in submission to the news which Gabriel, at left, brings to her. He is holding a scepter, a symbol of authority, and raises his hand in a gesture of blessing. This great feast is celebrated on March 25 after an early Christian belief that Jesus was conceived on the day when the passover lamb was chosen. This follows an even earlier Jewish tradition which stated that the Old Testament prophets died on the same date as their conception. In the Eastern Church, when Pascha falls on March 25, the two feasts are celebrated together in a great event called Kyriopascha. In the West, New Year's Day was observed on March 25 for over 1000 years; in England, this was the case until ARE YOU SOMEONE OR DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO Have you expressed an interest in becoming Catholic? A Teenager who has not been baptized? Were you baptized Catholic, but has not celebrated the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist? Pope Francis speaks to Altar Servers Serving at the altar, the pope told the young people, is a privileged way to draw closer to Jesus, which in turn "enables you to open yourselves to others, to journey together, to set demanding goals and to find the strength to achieve them." "The closer you are to the altar," he told them, "the more you will remember to speak with Jesus in daily prayer; the more you will be nourished by the word and the body of the Lord, the better able you will be to go out to others, bringing them the gift that you have received, giving in turn with enthusiasm the joy you have received. For more information about becoming an Altar Server, speak to Fr. George or contact Jean Marie Shea: jeanmarieshea@hotmail.com

6 Nativity s Food Pantry has been providing the families at the York Street Project, more specifically, the children at the Nurturing Place, with non perishable foods for more than 25 years. Your continued generosity allows us to provide them with the assistance they need to feed these students. We have been informed by our friends at the York Street Project that there has been a change in the donated foods they can accept to serve to the students at the Nurturing Place. They have provided us with the new approved list below. Since the new governmental regulations, they are using more fresh foods, so if GIFT CARDS can be donated that would really help also. Currently they can use gift cards from: SHOP-RITE, BJ'S AND TRADER JOE'S If you donate foods, not on the approved list below, we will deliver the foods to the York Street Project. While they cannot be served to the children at the Nurturing Place, the Moms will use the food at home. Peace, Fr.
