New titles are added regularly and range from light and uplifting materials to deeper spiritual reading. Encourage your children to read while on break from school-- Perhaps they would like one of the paperbacks about saints which are located on the lower bookshelves along with other titles of interest to youth. The Arlington Division of the World Apostolate of Fatima (the Blue Army) will sponsor a diocesanwide Eucharistic Holy Hour on Sun., June 24 from 3-4 pm in the Perpetual Adoration Chapel at Our Lady of Angels Church, Mary's Way, Woodbridge. SACRAMENTAL INFORMATION AND SERVICES Baptisms - First and Third Sundays at 1:45 p.m. by appointment. Parents are requested to make arrangements one month in advance and must be registered members of the parish. First time parents must attend a one session pre- Baptismal class, usually held on the second Saturday of the month at 10:00 a.m. in the Rectory office. Parents are encouraged to attend this class before the birth of their child. Baptisms in the Extraordinary Form may be requested by calling the parish office. Sponsor Certificates - These are Parish testimonies to the fact you are a practicing Catholic in the parish and are issued to those wishing to be a Godparent or sponsor for a Confirmation candidate. You must be registered in the parish and first time Godparents must attend a class before a certificate will be issued. Sacrament of Matrimony - Contact the parish office 6 months before your desired wedding date. Marriage Preparation is required by Church Law to enable a couple to fully understand the holiness and obligations of the Sacrament. Note that living together before marriage is sinful and harmful to future marriage. Couples who are living together will be asked to live separately during the marriage preparation time. Religious Education (CCD) - All children not attending a Catholic School who are in the first grade and up should be enrolled in the Parish Religious Education Program. R.C.I.A. - The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the process by which adults (and children who have reached the age of reason) are instructed in the Doctrine of the Church and are prepared to receive the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Eucharist. If you or someone you know would like to inquire about becoming a Catholic, please call Anne-Marie Pierce, Parish Registration - Prior to receiving particular services from the parish, one must be registered. Registration is now able to be conducted online, on the Parish website, and registration forms are available at the rectory or in the vestibule of the Church. The conference will provide practical programming advice to help educate and engage the faithful across a spectrum of issues from the beginning to the end of life. Experienced parish leaders will offer suggestions that work to increase engagement among members of the parish community. Participants will leave the conference with resources and confidence to promote pro-life activities during Respect Life Month in October and throughout the year. In addition, they will meet and network with other parish leaders in their deaneries and come to understand that they are an integral part of this vibrant diocesan-wide ministry. Remember that leaving the area on vacation does not mean a vacation from hearing Holy Mass. It is a mortal sin to miss Mass on a Sunday or Holy Day of Obligation through your own fault. Rethinking the Term "Brain Dead" Innovative research studying the brain of a 23 year old English woman in a coma following a traffic accident has medical experts and scientists reconsidering their definition of "brain dead". The woman had been unresponsive since emerging from a coma and met all the criteria for a persistent vegetative state. However, although she had been considered "brain dead", new research using an MRI scanner clearly showed that her brain activity was the same as those of a normal conscious person. Presented with spoken sentences, the woman had increased activity in speech comprehension centers in the brain. When asked to imagine herself playing tennis and walking through rooms in her house, brain areas governing visual spatial and motor functions lit up on the imaging screen--- again, in patterns similar to those seen in normal volunteers. The medical experts agree that although the patient had been diagnosed as in a vegetative state, she clearly retained the ability to understand spoken commands and to respond to them through her brain activity, rather than through speech or movement. They also stated that her ability to cooperate confirmed beyond any doubt that she was consciously aware of herself and her surroundings. The teaching of the Church has consistently reaffirmed the importance of the dignity of every human life, even when that life appears to be unresponsive. A case like this one should no doubt help to change attitudes and views of people living in so-called persistent vegetative states.
