Eighteenth Sunday After Pentecost A Reconciling in Christ Congregation (Lectionary 27) October 8, :30 a.m. All Are Welcome Here! Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church proclaims that the Gospel is God s gift to all people, to be shared unconditionally. We rejoice in the manner in which diversity has enriched, nurtured and challenged the life and ministry we share in Christ. We know that the world is often an unloving place and that the experience of alienation is all too common. Because Christ reconciles us, we welcome people of all ages, ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientations, gender identities, physical and mental abilities, educational levels, and socioeconomic backgrounds. We strive to be an evermore welcoming community. Following the example of Christ, we extend a most heartfelt welcome to all. Our Congregation s Vision Statement God in Christ loves us; therefore, through the Holy Spirit we will: Do justice We hope for our community and all of God s creation We feed the poor and comfort the afflicted We welcome and respect our neighbor and the stranger Love kindness We love and care for our congregation and our community We practice forgiveness locally and globally We strive for compassion and acceptance Walk humbly with our God We find joy in creation We desire to grow in spirituality We delight in liturgical worship and creative expression We are all children of God. Jesus calls us by name. With the Holy Spirit, we seek to live out God s grace. Welcome to Gustavus Adolphus! If you are a guest today, please fill out the blue slip included in today s bulletin so that we may have a record of your visit with us. We welcome people of all ages in worship. Activity bags for children are available from the ushers. We invite you to remain for refreshments and a time of fellowship following worship today. Please power off all cell phones as they sometimes cause interference with our sound system.
+ Please stand as you are able. Gathering PRELUDE Benedictus Max Reger + GATHERING SONG ELW Hymn 521 O Day of Rest and Gladness HOLY BAPTISM Camden Rhodes LaTourelle Presentation P God, who is rich in mercy and love, gives us a new birth into a living hope through the sacrament of baptism. By water and the Word God delivers us from sin and death and raises us to new life in Jesus Christ. We are united with all the baptized in the one body of Christ, anointed with the gift of the Holy Spirit, and joined in God's mission for the life of the world. P Who presents this child for baptism? (Sponsors present the child by name.) Worship Notes Numbers marked with the word page are found in the front portion of ELW (the red hardcover hymnal, Evangelical Lutheran Worship) at the bottom left and right corners of the page. Numbers marked with the word Hymn are found in the back portion of ELW in the upper left and right corners of the page. The presiding minister addresses the parents P Called by the Holy Spirit, trusting in the grace and love of God, do you desire to have Camden baptized into Christ? R I do. P As you bring Camden to receive the gift of baptism, you are entrusted with responsibilities: to live with him among God's faithful people, bring him to the word of God and the holy supper, teach him the Lord's Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments, place in his hands the holy scriptures, and nurture him in faith and prayer, so that he may learn to trust God, proclaim Christ through word and deed, care for others and the world God made, and work for justice and peace. P Do you promise to help Camden grow in the Christian faith and life? R I do. 2
The presiding minister addresses sponsors P Sponsors, do you promise to nurture Camden in the Christian faith as you are empowered by God's Spirit, and to help him live in the covenant of baptism and in communion with the church? R I do. The presiding minister addresses the assembly P People of God, do you promise to support Camden and pray for him in his new life in Christ? C We do. The assembly stands. Profession of Faith The presiding minister addresses candidates for baptism as well as the parents and sponsors of the child. The assembly may join in the responses. P I ask you to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the faith of the church. P Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God? R I renounce them. P Do you renounce the powers of this world that rebel against God? R I renounce them. P Do you renounce the ways of sin that draw you from God? R I renounce them. Introduction to the Day In today s gospel reading, Jesus tells a parable of the vineyard, an image of Israel, the prophets mission, and Christ s death. For Christians, the vineyard also speaks of God s love poured out in the blood of Christ, given to us for the forgiveness of sin. Grafted onto Christ the vine at baptism, we are nourished with wine and bread, that we may share Christ s sufferings and know the power of his resurrection. The presiding minister addresses the candidates and the assembly. P Do you believe in God the Father? C I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. P Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? C I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. 3
P Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? C I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Thanksgiving at the Font P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C It is right to give our thanks and praise. Holy Baptism Today we welcome Camden Rhodes LaTourelle into the family of Christ through the sacrament of Holy Baptism. Camden is the son of Aileen and Brandon LaTourelle and brother to Avery. His sponsors are Kate O Conner and Marco Suemnick. We pray God s richest blessings on Camden, his parents, family, and sponsors. P Blessed are you, O God, maker and ruler of all things. Your voice thundered over the waters at creation. You water the mountains and send springs into the valleys to refresh and satisfy all living things. C Through the waters of the flood you carried those in the ark to safety. Through the sea you led your people Israel from slavery to freedom. In the wilderness you nourished them with water from the rock, and you brought them across the river Jordan to the promised land. By the baptism of his death and resurrection, your Son Jesus has carried us to safety and freedom. The floods shall not overwhelm us, and the deep shall not swallow us up, for Christ has brought us over to the land of promise. He sends us to make disciples, baptizing in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Pour out your Holy Spirit; wash away sin in this cleansing water; clothe the baptized with Christ; and claim your daughters and sons, no longer slave and free, no longer male and female, but one with all the baptized in Christ Jesus, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. (The assembly may be seated.) Baptism P Camden Rhodes LaTourelle, I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. 4
P You belong to Christ, in whom you have been baptized. Alleluia. P Let us pray. We give you thanks, O God, that through water and the Holy Spirit you give your daughters and sons new birth, cleanse them from sin, and raise them to eternal life. Sustain Camden with the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever. C Amen. P Camden, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever. C Amen. Welcome A Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. C We welcome you into the body of Christ and into the mission we share: join us in giving thanks and praise to God and bearing God s creative and redeeming word to all the world. BAPTISM SONG Jesus Loves Me Jesus loves me! This I know, for the Bible tells me so; little ones to him belong, they are weak, but he is strong. Yes, Jesus loves me, yes, Jesus loves me, yes, Jesus loves me, the Bible tells me so. + GREETING P The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C And also with you. + PRAYER OF THE DAY P Let us pray. Holy God, Maker of heaven and earth, out of your great love for the world you sent us your beloved Son but we sent him to his death. Have mercy on us, O Lord; forgive us, renew us, restore us so that we may be the people of your vineyard and bear good fruit for your holy realm; through Jesus Christ our Savior. C Amen. 5
Word The prophet sings a sad, parable-like love song about the relationship between God and Israel. In this song Israel is compared to a promising vineyard. Despite God s loving care, the vineyard that is Israel has brought forth wild grapes of injustice and distress, when fine grapes of justice and righteousness were expected. FIRST READING Isaiah 5:1 7 1Let me sing for my beloved my love-song concerning his vineyard: My beloved had a vineyard on a very fertile hill. 2He dug it and cleared it of stones, and planted it with choice vines; he built a watchtower in the midst of it, and hewed out a wine vat in it; he expected it to yield grapes, but it yielded wild grapes. 3And now, inhabitants of Jerusalem and people of Judah, judge between me and my vineyard. 4What more was there to do for my vineyard that I have not done in it? When I expected it to yield grapes, why did it yield wild grapes? 5And now I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard. I will remove its hedge, and it shall be devoured; I will break down its wall, and it shall be trampled down. 6I will make it a waste; it shall not be pruned or hoed, and it shall be overgrown with briers and thorns; I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it. 7For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the people of Judah are his pleasant planting; he expected justice, but saw bloodshed; righteousness, but heard a cry! P Word of God. Word of life. C Thanks be to God. 6 SECOND READING Philippians 3:4b 14 [Paul writes:] 4b If anyone else has reason to be confident in the flesh, I have more: 5 circumcised on the eighth day, a member of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew born of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; 6 as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless.
7Yet whatever gains I had, these I have come to regard as loss because of Christ. 8 More than that, I regard everything as loss because of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and I regard them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ 9and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but one that comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God based on faith. 10 I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the sharing of his sufferings by becoming like him in his death, 11 if somehow I may attain the resurrection from the dead. 12Not that I have already obtained this or have already reached the goal; but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13Beloved, I do not consider that I have made it my own; but this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus. Paul reviews some of his supposed credentials, which no longer have any bearing in comparison to the right relationship he has been given through the death of Christ. The power of Christ s resurrection motivates him to press on toward the ultimate goal, eternal life with Christ. P Word of God. Word of life. C Thanks be to God. + GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Cantor: Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. (Repeat Alleluia) + GOSPEL Matthew 21:33 46 P The Holy Gospel according to Matthew, the 21 st chapter. C Glory to you, O Lord. [Jesus said to the people:] 33 Listen to another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a wine press in it, and built a watchtower. Then he leased it to tenants and went to another country. 34 When the harvest time had come, he sent his slaves to the tenants to collect his produce. 35 But the tenants seized his slaves and beat one, killed another, and stoned another. 36 Again he sent other slaves, more than the first; and they treated them in the same way. 37 Finally he sent his son to them, saying, They will respect my son. 38 But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him and get his inheritance. 39 So they seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. 40 Now when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants? 41 They said to him, He will put those wretches to a miserable death, and lease the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the produce at the harvest time. Jesus tells a parable to the religious leaders who are plotting his death, revealing that their plans will, ironically, bring about the fulfillment of scripture. 7
42Jesus said to them, Have you never read in the scriptures: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord s doing, and it is amazing in our eyes? 43Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that produces the fruits of the kingdom. 44 The one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and it will crush anyone on whom it falls. 45When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they realized that he was speaking about them. 46 They wanted to arrest him, but they feared the crowds, because they regarded him as a prophet.
