6 Page 6 Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus had also been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased. (Luke 3:21-22) In this New Year, let us remember our baptisms and be thankful. First, in baptism we are claimed as children of God. Whether we are baptized as a baby, a teenager or an adult, the promise is the same. We are claimed as children of God. We don t earn our identity, we don t work for our identity we simply receive our identity by the very act of baptism. When my daughter was six years old, the movie The Lion King, came out. Like any movie that a six year old becomes enthralled with, I watched it with her several times. One of the scenes in that movie reminded me of this whole subject of our identity. In the circle of life, Simba, the lion cub, is destined to become the Lion King. The problem is that he doesn t believe that. Convinced by his Uncle Scar that he is responsible for his father s death, Simba wanders through the underworld with wart hog and the rascals. Then one day Rafiki, the priestly monkey, hits Simba over the head with a coconut and says, Who are you? I know who you are. You are Mufasa s boy. Down by the lakeside, peering into his own reflection in the water, Simba hears the voice of his father Mufasa saying, Simba, remember who you are. Do you wonder where they got the idea for that scene in the movie? Return to the waters of your baptism and remember who you are. It is said that the sixteenth century Reformer, Martin Luther, had his hours of doubt and despair, wondering if God was real, wondering if God loved him, wondering if there was any hope for his life. In such hours he would remind himself with these words, I have been baptized, I have been baptized. Are there times you wonder if God is real, if God really loves you? Return to your baptism you are God s child, you are treasured and loved. Don t ever forget who you are. And then, here s the second thing to see about Baptism: In the waters of baptism we are called. Our mission statement for this church, begins with these words: St. John a Christian family of disciples alive in a Scripture-based, Spirit-led mission of ministry, worship, and play. Being a part of a family, children have responsibilities and as they grow their responsibilities grow. Being a part of God s family, through our baptism, means we also grow into our responsibility to be about his mission. When we baptize at St. John, we use this words: Coming in water, God washed us and grafts us into Christ. Our identity for all the days of our life is set! We are children of God, disciples of Christ, a servant people, the communion of saints, and proclaimers of God s wonderful deeds. And so, remember that you have been baptized. Remember who you are. You are a child of God. You have an identity. Remember why you are here. As God s child, you are called to be about his mission. You have a purpose given to you by God. Remember your baptism and be thankful. Peace Pastor John Omans

Funds raised help youth attend summer mission trips or other fun activities. If your son/daughter is signed up for a summer mission trip, you can be adding to their Individual Youth Account funds with your Scrip purchases. For every dollar you spend, you get a dollar s worth of buying power. Merchants are willing to make donations because they are then assured that you will go to their stores to shop. Just think, money you intend to spend anyway is generating financial support, without costing you anything except your willingness to plan ahead and join in. Help needed! I m hoping to add some team members to help sell Scrip on Sunday mornings. Preferably parents of youth going on mission trips, but I would cheer for any additional people on the scrip team. Could you commit to helping once every 2-3 months? Amy LeCocq, Scrip Coordinator Call

11 Page 11 As we move into the coldest months of the year I wanted to take a few minutes to remind us all of some safety issues. Take a few minutes to think about these reminders that are appropriate for all ages and all genders. Just a few days ago we had a light dusting of snow, and it did not require shoveling, but we all know that winter is here and with it will comes that heavy wet snow and we could get large amounts. Be kind to yourself and if you do need to shovel do it a little bit at a time. You don t have to do it all at once. Shovel a small amount and go inside and rest for a period. Also with winter comes very cold temperatures and we need to guard against frostbite. Use warm gloves and scarves and if it is snowy and cold, slow down on that shoveling, a little a time is something to remember. Don t shovel after eating a heavy meal. Icy walks are dangerous to us all. Maybe you can help a neighbor who might not be able to shovel or should not be shoveling. Giving these small tokens of kindness to our neighbors is one of the greatest gifts we can give as Christians. Turkey grit also is great to use on icy steps and sidewalks to prevent falling. This time of year is also cold and flu season, so if you have a cold remember to cover your cough and remind our youngsters to do the same. Hand washing is one of the best ways to prevent getting a cold or other infection. Drink lots of healthy fluids when you have a cold. It is not too late to get a flu shot. The flu has been sporadic so far so you still have time to get that shot and build up immunities in your body. If you have a fever stay home so you don t pass it on to others. These are a few gentle reminders to keep us all healthy during this time of year. I wish you all a Healthy and Happy New Year! Carol Tilney Parish Nurse
