1 Engaging the Missional Imagination: Worship and Preaching for a Missional Church DM Professors: Elaine Heath, McCreless Associate Professor of Evangelism, PST Alyce McKenzie, Professor of Homiletics, PST Dates: January 3-13, 2011 (9 sessions, 1-5pm) Description and Purpose of Course: This course explores the theology and practice of worship and preaching in the context of a missional ecclesiology. Students will develop a biblical, theological understanding of what it means to be a missional Church. They will gain confidence and experience in leading worship and preaching in missional contexts beyond the local church sanctuary. More than simply expanding their own understandings, the course will help them inspire a missional commitment in the congregation through preaching and worship. They will leave the course equipped with specific forms and practices of worship and preaching. Day Two: Globalized Preaching Discussion of DVD sermons class members have brought in light of Eunjoo Kim s book. Discussion of current practices of preaching and worship and how Eunjoo Kim s vision of global, transformative preaching would form and reform those practices. Day Three Dialogical Preaching Discussion of Pagitt s book: 2

3 Workshop on how our sermons would look if we reshaped them along the lines of Pagitt s dialogical format. Possible guest speaker: Danielle Shroyer or Courtney Pinkerton Day Four: Missional Worship Discussion of Schmit s book; What does he mean by missional worship? What does worship need to include to engage the missional imagination? What aspects of tradition need to be emphasized or reclaimed or deemphasized? What are the abiding signs of faithful worship in Christian communities? What new forms of worship arise? What forgotten forms must be reclaimed? Day Five : Guests from missional outreach posts. Discussion of preaching and worship in these settings from the perspective of the worshippers Tim Harless, prison ministry, FUMC, Allen Representative from a ministry that works with the elderly Any Miller, Salvation Army Captain, Arlington, TX Justin Nygren (ArtLoveMagic) Day Six Cultural Exegesis for Missional Preaching and Worship Discussion of Cultural Exegesis based on their reading of Eyes Wide Open. Each class member brings paper based on notes from their cultural exegesis journal that they began on the first day of class. It consists of examples of their discerning theological or preachable insights in cultural expressions around them. Students are encouraged to observe cultural expressions beyond their own ethnicity and class background. 4 Pre class assignments I. 5 page paper on missional ecclesiology required book Paper on missional ecclesiology Read one of the book on missional ecclesiology listed on the required reading list. Write a 5 page analysis that addresses these questions: What is missional ecclesiology? In what ways is your church a missional congregation? In what ways is it an attractional congregation? What forces would support and encourage a move toward missional identity and what forces would impede that movement? 2. 6 page reflection on Eunjoo Kim s book: Bring DVD of a sermon Bring a DVD of a sermon you have preached in the past year. (before doing the readings from ). Write 3 pages describing how it reflects your habitual practices of sermon preparation: prayer, congregational exegesis, scriptural exegesis, sermon formation and delivery (3 pages). Read Kim s book on preaching in a globalized context. Write a 3 page paper discussing how her insights would affect these areas of your sermon preparation. 3. Bring sermon/outline and be prepared to discuss Pagitt s book Choose another sermon you have preached in the past year. Bring 4 copies of a manuscript of this sermon to class. Along with the manuscript, prepare a one- page outline that describes how the sermon unfolds and bring 4 copies to class. Be prepared for an indepth discussion of Pagitt s ideas about preaching and how they relate to your current practice page reflection paper on Schmit s book. Bring several bulletins from your church over the past 6 months. Prepare a 3 page paper as you read his Sent and Gathered: A Manual for Missional Worship. In it, answer three questions: (1 page each) 1. what aspects of your worship are affirmed and confirmed? 2. What aspects are challenged? 3. What changes are called for? Assignments during the 9 day on campus class Choose one book from the rec list that they have not yet read and write a report Read Eyes Wide Open and Keep a cultural exegesis journal that will result in a paper to be handed in on day 6. Read Novel Preaching and rewrite a former sermon based on its principles. Due in class on day 7. Read a book from the recommended list(s) and be prepared to share your insights with the class (day 8) Bring outline that answers four questions What s new? (new insights) What confirms what you already knew? 4
