1 Birmingham Theological Seminary 2200 Briarwood Way Birmingham, AL Techniques of Church Planting Professor: Larry Cockrell MS6652 Work Phone: Cell Phone: Fax: COURSE PURPOSE The purpose of this course is to provide the student with a grasp of what is involved in planting new churches, the biblical and theological concepts of church planting, with study of successful models. COURSE OBJECTIVES 1. The student will be able to describe the biblical and theological foundations for church planting. 2. The student will be able to outline the basic stages of the church planting process. 3. The student will create a comprehensive church planting proposal for a specific work. Planting Growing Churches for the 21st Century: A Comprehensive Guide for New Churches and Those Desiring Renewal. Grand Rapids: Baker Books, third edition, Stetzer, Ed. Planting New Churches in a Postmodern Age. Nashville, TN: Broadman & Holman Publishers, Collateral Texts: Lovelace, Richard. Renewal as a Way of Life. Carol Stream, IL Church Smart Resources, Warren, Rick. The Purpose Driven Church. Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, COURSE REQUIREMENTS 1. Completion of reading assignments 2. Three two to three page book critiques of the required texts. 3. Completion of a comprehensive church planting proposal for a specific work (25-30 pages). Your proposal should follow the model that will be outlined during the class lectures. See course outline for details.
2 GRADING 1. Completion of three book critiques. (30%) 2. Church Planting Proposal (70%) Seminary Policy on Submitted Work All course materials must be submitted to the respective professors at the end of the semester (last day of classes). Thereafter, course materials may be submitted for up to six (6) weeks after the end of the semester directly to the office of the Registrar with the permission of the professor. If a student submits course materials after the end of the semester but within the six (6) grace period, the student s grade will be lowered by one letter grade. The course materials will not be accepted after the six (6) week grace period and a failing grade will be posted to the student s transcript. BTS FORMAT AND STYLE STANDARDS All papers must be formatted in accordance with Turabian Chicago standards, including the title page. Any paper not conforming to these standards will automatically be dropped one letter grade.
