This mission is carried out not only in the classroom but also by involvement in numerous services to the church and the larger community. The HST and ICS are located in the College of Theology and Ministry, and are vitally engaged in its goals and tasks. The stated mission of the college is to help students deepen their relationship with God and to equip them for service in the kingdom of God. The mission of the DMin program is to spiritually form servants who live missionally in the world and are capable of leading and training those in their spiritual care to fully participate in missio dei (God s mission for creation). Course Description Western societies are increasingly ethnically, culturally, and religiously diverse. Various forms of secularism continue to unfold, and church leaders increasingly find themselves in post-denominational and post-christian contexts. Navigating such dynamics as leaders of local Christian congregations is challenging. This course will equip students with resources for better understanding and engaging both Western and non-western ministry contexts. It will also explore a theological framework for faithful witness and embodied contextualization of the Gospel. Textbooks, ministry-specific projects, case studies, lecture, and discussion will be employed for these goals. This course is being taught in conjunction with the Preaching Workshop for 2017: Preaching and Cross-Cultural Ministry. Students will be expected to fully participate in the workshop, with the preaching assignment counting as part of the required course work. Academic Integrity Policy Because Lipscomb s primary mission is to integrate Christian faith and practice with academic excellence, integrity is important in this course. As your instructors, we will deal with each student fairly and honestly. As participants in the course of study, you are expected to do your own work on all assignments unless I indicate that collaboration is allowed on a specific assignment. Penalties for integrity violations will range from failure on the assignment involved to failure in the course. The instructor also reserves the right to report violations to members of the administration. For clarification, refer to the University s Code of Conduct and Academic Integrity Policy (see 1

Due January 12, Copy and paste the following scale at the top of your assignment: Choose the option that most accurately describes how much of Rah s book you completed: a. I read 100% of the reading. b. I read between 75-99% of the reading. c. I read 50-74% of the reading. d. I read less than half of the reading. e. I didn t read this book. Part A. In order to encapsulate Rah s argument and display your understanding of the book as a whole, provide a one to two paragraph ( word) description of the central idea presented in each chapter. Part B. Write a word personal reflection on each of the following themes of this book in relation to this course: evangelism, culture, America, biblical church, church growth, sin. Part C. Present your understanding of Rah s book to any person or small group of people in your ministry context and write a word description of the conversation that follows your presentation. Assignment 2: Volf s Flourishing. Introduction, Chapters 1-3, Due January 19, Copy and paste the following scale at the top of your assignment: Choose the option that most accurately describes how much of Volf s book you completed: a. I read 100% of the reading. b. I read between 75-99% of the reading. c. I read 50-74% of the reading. d. I read less than half of the reading. e. I didn t read the reading. Part A. Introduction. For each of the following questions, provide a word answer: A.1. How does Volf define and delimit religion and globalization for the sake of this book? How do they relate to one another, according to Volf? A.2. What does Volf mean when he says that a view from nowhere is impossible (p. 18)? In light of that, how does he locate himself as an author? Name a few things he mentions about himself that need to be taken into account as we consider and assess his proposals. A.3. What does Volf hope that religion can offer a globalized world? Part B. Chapters 1 & 2. For each of the following questions, provide a word answer: B.1. Assignment 3: Oduyoye s Beads and Strands, Due January 26, Read Oduyoye s Beads and Strands: Reflections of an African Woman on Christianity in Africa. Part A. In order to encapsulate Oduyoye s argument and display your understanding of the book as a whole, provide a one to two paragraph description of the central idea presented in each chapter. Part B. Present your understanding of Oduyoye s book to any person or small group of people in your ministry context and write a word reflection on the conversation that follows your presentation. Assignment 4: Camp and Barton, Due February 2, Camp, Who Is My Enemy? and Barton, "Navigating the Degrees in Christian-Muslim Dialogue" Part A. Provide a word essay summarizing Camp's main thesis with regard to the basic differences between the Jesus story and the Muhammad story and with regard to war and peace. Part B. Provide a word reflective essay assessing Camp's thesis. As part of your personal assessment, engage Barton's "Navigating the Degrees in Christian-Muslim Dialog." Assignment 5: Sermon, Selby, and Powell, Due February 12, Read the introduction, chapter 1, and chapter 6 of Selby s, Not With Wisdom of Words. Also read Powell s, What Do They Hear? prior to preparing your sermon for the seminar. Prepare a sermon on your assigned text that is influenced by the themes of this course as well as Selby s and Powell s books. The sermon will be preached on Tuesday or Wednesday of the preaching seminar. The sermon should be appropriate for your peers in the DMIN program. We will be preaching to one another, and the audience should appropriately inform your sermon preparation. Part A. Provide a one to two paragraph description of the central idea presented in each chapter of the Selby reading and a one to two paragraph description of the central idea presented in each chapter of the Powell book. Part B. A manuscript of your sermon accompanied by an word reflection on how the themes and reading assignments of the course impacted your sermon preparation. Make sure you reflect on how Selby and Powell s books influenced your sermon prepearation. 4

5 Assignment 6: Volf s Flourishing. Chapters 4-5 & Epilogue, Due March 16, Copy and paste the following scale at the top of your assignment: Choose the option that most accurately describes how much of Volf s book you completed: a. I read 100% of the reading. b. I read between 75-99% of the reading. c. I read 50-74% of the reading. d. I read less than half of the reading. e. I didn t read the reading. *Part D. Read Chapters 4&5. For each of the following questions, provide a word answer: D.1. Briefly define the differences between the two kinds of exclusivism and the two kinds of pluralism that Volf discusses in chapter 4. What is his main point about that he is trying to make about religious exclusivism? D.2. From Chapter 5, what contributions has globalization made to world peace, and what new threats does it present? What resources does religion provide, according to Volf, to address the needs and challenge the threats that globalization presents? D.3. What is Volf s main point in the section entitled Entanglement with Power in Chapter 5? Part E. Read the Epilogue. For each of the following questions, provide a word answer: E.1. What is Volf s main point in the Epilogue? E.2. Provide a concise personal assessment of this book s content. Do you think Volf made his point effectively? How has this book affected your thinking about religions and/or globalization? *indicates that this assignment is continued from Assignment 2, in which you turned in parts A, B, & C. Final Project: Due April 6, First, read Tim Sensing s book, Qualitative Research: A Multi-Methods Approach to Projects for Doctor of Ministry Theses. If you feel comfortable with qualitative research in the context of the Doctor of Ministry project, you may not want to read the entire book, but if you are unclear and have little experience, you are advised to read the entire book before undertaking this project. Next, read Mallory Wyckoff s DMIN project, found at this link - Based on Sensing s advice, undertake a mini-project in your local context in which you use the interview method (individuals or group interviews) described in Sensing s qualitative tools section in chapter 4. This project should not center on a preaching or teaching series but should emphasize time spent conducting interviews and gaining experience in collecting data from those interviews. If you already know your project topic, this project may be helpful for your long-term goals. If you are not certain of your project topic, you may simply devise a project for the benefit of this course, your qualitative research experience, and your local ministry. Your goal is to collect data that is context sensitive and specific, and the data from this project should in some way relate to themes of our readings and lectures in this course: religious and cross-cultural engagement. Dr. Wyckoff s project provides you with an example of a full project as an example of good interview methodology, simply to provide you with imagination for research. For this particular assignment, remember that you are not undertaking an entire project. You should simply create a mini-project or project chapter and report your findings in a word paper. 5

6 Your project should address appropriate contextualization of the gospel in a target culture and identify appropriate opportunities for missional contextualization. Consider emphases such as the following: mission points in which your church is involve, minority populations in the area of your ministry context, religious literacy needs in your ministry context, gender research opportunities in your ministry context, human sexuality research opportunities in your ministry context Grading for Final Project 25% illustrates understanding of interview methodology 25% demonstrates appropriate engagement with your ministry context 25% relates to the broad themes of this course 25% demonstrates doctoral-level writing, organization, and grammar skills 6
