1 March 1, 2016 Volume 5 Issue 3 This Month s Feature Stories Lodges That Meet Outside - an article taken from the book A Quick Guide to Freemasonry by Dr David Harrison Lodges That Meet Outside Ancient Masons Inside this issue: From the East 2 From the West 2 From the South 2 From the Secretary 3 From the Senior Deacon 3 From the Senior Steward 3 Lubbock Lodge 1392 in Action 5 Lubbock Lodge Calendar 6 The Quarry: Our 7 Degree Work There are some lodges that meet on ranches, hilltops, caves, and in other outside areas, and actually confer degrees and conduct ceremonies outside. Some outside meetings have become traditional for certain lodges, such as the Castle Lodge No. 122, in Eagle, Colorado, which meets outside on a private ranch annually during the summer. There is also a lodge in Montana, which still meets outside and has Tyler s mounted on horseback, with custommade aprons for the horses! There are many traditional outside meeting places for Masonic lodges in the US; one of the more famous examples being Independence Rock, in central Wyo (photo by David Cook) ming, which was a landmark and way-station on the old Oregon Trail, and became the first meeting place for Freemasons in what was to become the State of Wyoming. A similar site exists in Montana at the summit of Mullan Pass, which was the first recorded meeting place of Freemasons in the State in A stone alter and stone Officer s stations have been erected there. In Indiana, a rock quarry was used as a meeting place for eighteen hundred Masons in 1967, using forty-five Tylers positioned around the rim of the quarry, and at a quarry in Marietta, Ohio, Tylers on horseback shouted from the rim of the quarry to report. Caves are Programs & Announcements Looks like the Groundhog back in February was right! - Early Spring. This month our District Deputy Grand Master Charles Mire will be here for his official visit so you don t want to miss that important message. As you may have heard there may be significant changes on the horizon for Lubbock Lodge. We will be looking for input from all of our members. Please do not neglect to join us at our stated meetings in the coming months. Our newsletter now has a distribution of 135. Now that doesn t seem like much but, many of these are WAY far away from Lubbock, Texas USA!. If you are one of those reading this, let us hear from you. We read your s at our stated meetings. Next month we will have a table at the gun show April 25 26, 2015 to heighten our presence in the community. Drop by and check it out! Lubbock Civic Center. 2 Page 2 Volume 5, Issue 3 Lubbock Lodge #1392 Dealing with Change: A Message From the East Worshipful Master Kevin Rush The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new. Socrates We are likely to have some major decisions coming before us in our lodge before the end of the year. For some, they will be embrace the potential of change with enthusiasm and for others it will be a source of great angst. If a decision by the lodge comes down on the side of change, instead of resisting, allow change to unfold and try to understand what s transforming and why. Be aware that change can occur at anytime. This means understanding that things can and will be different from the status quo. Acknowledging change means allowing it to happen as it unfolds instead of approaching change from a place of denial and resistance. Change is not easy, but is inevitable in all facets of our lives, and each of our individual and collective character is revealed on the basis of how we face these changes. The question we each have to answer is: Will this change be an obstacle or an opportunity? The grand object of Masonry is to promote the happiness of the human race A Message From the West Senior Warden John Rosser This is a part of an article posted on the Grand Lodge of Texas website By Erik X Brisen o Freemasonry is a fraternity. Its membership is restricted to men, but there is no hazing as is found in some college fraternities. The Masonic Order is a serious group. It exists to take good men and help them to become better men. Thus, it is not a reform society. It does not exist to reform criminals, nor would such persons benefit from it teachings. Masonry developed from lodges of operative or stone masons. The Masonry of today is distinguished from the stone masonry of old by being referred to as Speculative Masonry. Speculative or FREEmasonry does not work with stone but instead works on the lives of men. Its teachings take the imagery of carpentry and architecture and use that imagery to teach by symbols about building a good character. From the South Article 342 Lodge Property Junior Warden Charles Straub Inquires have been made regarding the purchasing our lodge property. Before making any decisions to sell, we must first make sure we follow proper procedures set forth by The Grand Lodge. Article 342 of The Laws of The Grand Lodge of Texas state: Permission to Sell or Mortgage Lodge Property: Penalty for Acting Without Consent. Any Lodge which may sell its Lodge Hall or real property and/or create any lien on its property; or create any indebtedness for any purpose other than the current operating expenses of the Lodge, secured or unsecured, without first obtaining the consent thereto of the Grand Lodge, or if in vacation, the consent of the Grand Master thereto, shall be guilty of a Masonic disciplinary violation and be subject to the arrest and forfeiture of its Charter, or such other penalty as the Grand Lodge may inflict. This topic will most likely be discussed at the next stated meeting, so we hope to see you there. Remember not only to say the right thing in the right place, but far more difficult still, to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment.

3 Volume 5, Issue 3 Lubbock Lodge #1392 Page 3 From the Secretary Jerry Hendrick Taking Care of Business Brethren: As you know we are entering a new season, because spring and summer are almost here. This is the last push for DUES, Yes I said dues. Please get the to me. I really hate to suspend a Brother for nonpayment of DUES, But without your help we will not be able to keep the doors to our Lodge open. "Metallic Deposit" What connection does "depositing something of a metallic substance" have with Masonic charity? This ceremony is often called the Rite of Destitution. It is to remind us that other persons about us are actually without resources, as we at one time found ourselves. Masons therefore are charges to provide physical relief within the limits of their ability. Masonic charity is not confined to money, however. It encompasses thought and time devoted to those in need; Visiting the sick; assuring the unfortunate of our interest and concern; sympathizing with those who suffer; and particularly in exercising tolerance toward those whose opinions or beliefs may differ from our own Start thinking about what you want to do you want to do as a leader in the next masonic year. Do you want to be an officer? Let the current wardens know of your desires. Visiting Brothers & Prospects The February stated meeting was in celebration of our wives and widows. If you weren t there, you missed a really good time! Guests included Ray Copeland, of Mackenzie Lodge # 1327 & DDGM for 93B. Also from Mackenzie was Gary Armstrong, PM; Rod Armstrong, PM and Tim Smith, PM; Bob Clemmons, 33 PM and Rolan Pirtle, JW both of Yellowhouse #841 and Bob Chesser, PM of Daylight #1443 On February 9, we had a called meeting to receive the proficiency in the second and third section from one of our EA candidates. The thing that makes this noteworthy is that he did a self examination. Immediately after submitting his work he was passed to the degree of Fellowcraft. Let us endeavor so to live that when we come to die even the undertaker will be sorry. From the Senior Steward Luis Ramos Food, Flowers & Frolic Seems like it was just yesterday that we installed a new worshipful master, we are in March 2016! If you are a mason please remember that you need to treat others how you want to be treated. Respect is one moral that we should hold very deeply and respect is earned not given. Please be mindful of all masons and their differences as no one is the same and we all believe differently, but acceptance is what makes us who we are. Upcoming Menu for March: Texas chili Corn bread Pinto beans Cookies Beverage Take everything you like seriously, except yourselves.

4 Page 4 Volume 5, Issue 3 Lubbock Lodge # th Problem of Euclid (con t from page 1) Hidden Lessons From Ritual Work also a common meeting place for lodges in the US, for example, in Kentucky, Masons met in Mammoth Cave, in Oregon, Malheur Cave has been the site of meetings of the Robert Burns Lodge No. 97, and in New Mexico the Carlsbad Caverns have also witnessed lodge meetings. In England, for a lodge to meet outside is now unheard of, but there was a lodge under the Grand Lodge of Wigan that did meet under a bridge by the Leeds and Liverpool Canal near Wigan. This particular lodge called the Rose Bridge Lodge, was quite short lived, but was an interesting reminder that lodges could once meet this way. Apparently the lodge posted a Tyler at either end of the canal towpath to keep out intruders.[v] Meeting outside, under the sun, the moon and the stars, is for a lodge to meet under the active, natural Universe itself, and as long as the weather is good, there would be no place better. Do lodges meet outside in other countries? Lodges have been known to meet outside in India, and in Australia, one New South Wales lodge has met a couple of times in a large cave, and there is a Mark Lodge, which has met in a quarry in Australia. The quarry had supplied the stone for the Grand Lodge building in Brisbane. On the 18th May 2013, the J W Jackson Lodge of Mark Master Masons No.32 on the Roll of the Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons of Queensland, held an Advancement to the degree of Mark Master in the quarry at Yangan, north-east of Warwick, Queensland. This is the same quarry that provided sandstone for the Ann Street COAZ outdoor lodge at the TNT Ranch, Gypsum, Colorado (photo by David Moran) Masonic Memorial Temple, Home of the UGLQ. This Mark Lodge is named after James Watkin Jackson, a pioneer of Freemasonry in Queensland. He was the founding Master of North Australian Lodge No1 UGLQ, consecrated 13thJuly 1859, six months before the state of Queensland was proclaimed. Reprinted with permission of Dr. David Harrison. Visit his blog drdavidharrison.blogspot.co.uk/ Ancient Masons "Ancient Masons," was the name assumed by a body of Masons who, in 1738 seceded from the regular or legal Grand Lodge of England. They did this because of changes the Institution made on the ritual work. The Ancients called themselves "Ancient Free and Accepted Masons" and were the new Lodges. They practiced the old ritual work and condemned the Moderns, as they called them, for changes made in that work. The Moderns, were called "Free and accepted Masons" and were the old Lodges of England. They adopted the new style of ritual work formed by Anderson, Preston, and others. These differences kept the two bodies apart to the extreme, that there would be both in the same community and sometimes, side by side. They would clam the same jurisdiction and argue over who was right and who was clandestine. In 1813 the two bodies resolved their differences and joined hands, but the Lodges were spread through out the world, and particularly in America. They turned out to be impossible to align. Both are recognized by the Grand Lodge of England and both have the same rights and benefits which are accorded a legal Lodge of Master Masons. Although you will find the different Lodges in United States their jurisdictions are limited to each state. This is why we have: Ancient Free and Accepted Masons Ancient Free Masons Free and Accepted Masons and on and on. Source: Bro. William R. Fischer Myfreemasonry.net Remember not only to say the right thing in the right place, but far more difficult still, to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment.

This Month s Brothers & Birthdays Clifford Hopping 3/2 Robert Werner 3/2 Richard Maddox 3/5 Brandon Gould 3/11 The Quarry: Our Esoteric Work By Bro. Elmer Coke Etgen THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF A MASTER MASON The constant responsibility of a Master Mason is to preserve the reputation of the Fraternity unsullied. Leading a good life is the best means of carrying through our individual responsibility to our Lodge and our Craft. The conduct of each Master Mason is strictly his own responsibility. He should choose the course which will bring credit to himself and honor to the Fraternity. James Parker 3/12 Finus Branham 3/21 Be not hasty to condemn others. How do you know that in their place, you could have resisted the temptation? And even were it so, why should you condemn one who is weaker than you? If your brother should slip, offer your hand to him without judgment or harsh criticism. Judge him not by your standards but by his own. The things a man has to have are hope and confidence in himself against odds, and sometimes he needs somebody, his pal or his mother or his wife or God, to give him that confidence. He's got to have some inner standards worth fighting for or there won't be any way to bring him into conflict. And he must be ready to choose death before dishonor without making too much song and dance about it. That's all there is to it. info@lubbockmasoniclodge.org
