3 October 12, 2014 RECRUIT REJOICE RESPOND REVIVE Dear Christian Friends: It is with joy and excitement that I write to you, bidding greetings on the opening pages of our 116th Homecoming Worship Bulletin. God has blessed us with grace and peace to once again celebrate as a church family. We decree victory and favor as we proclaim 116 Years of God s Faithfulness. Our church motto declares that we are Making Church Attractive for the Unchurched...Engaging for Those Who Keep Coming Back. Our mission statement identifies our ministry focus to be Christ centered. Yet the revealing description of the C. N. Jenkins Memorial Presbyterian Church simply shows a congregation that is unashamed of its heritage and unapologetic of its commitment to Jesus Christ. Found within the pages of this worship bulletin are the stories and the history of faithful women and men who sought to do the will of almighty God for 116 years. Through prayer, fasting, and sacrifice, the vision of a warm and caring congregation was projected and the ministry of that vision has now come to reality. C. N. Jenkins Memorial Presbyterian Church is proud to be a part of so many lives and it is blessed with people and resources to fulfill its vital ministry. Since last year s Homecoming, we have welcomed new members through baptism, profession of faith and transfer from other congregations. We have also said our good-byes to members who either moved away or were called home to glory. Yet, through it all, God has sustained us. We praise God for the multitude of blessings. The dedication and tireless efforts of our ancestors now reaps a wonderful harvest. We share in the development of our young and the caring respect of our elderly. We rejoice in the wholeness of our singles and support of the union of our couples. We embrace new ideas for our future and welcome the wisdom of the ages which God has let the light of life shine for 116 years at C. N. Jenkins. It is my hope that you will receive a blessing from our worship today. My sincere thanks are extended to all who assisted on this grand day of worship and celebration. Sincerely, Rev. Dr. Jerry L. Cannon Rev. Dr. Jerry L. Cannon, Pastor Head of Staff

5 Present Ministry In September 1992, Reverend Jerry L. Cannon was installed as pastor of C. N. Jenkins Memorial Presbyterian. As a church who focused upon its ministries and mission, it continued this quest. Under the guidance of Rev. Cannon, emphasis has been placed upon worship, leadership development, and community outreach. In order to meet the spiritual needs of each child and adult in the church, various ministries have been implemented, adding to the numerous activities which were already in place upon Rev. Cannon s arrival. The church provides opportunities for engagement in a variety of ministries. They are designed for adults, teens, and younger children. The Christian Education Department has traditionally offered ministerial options for youth and children. During the tenure of Rev. Cannon, new programs have been implemented including Children s Church, Young Adult Bible Study, Married Couples Ministry, Wisdom Keepers, Freedom School and the Dance Ministry. Adult ministries offer members opportunities which enable them to enhance their personal walk of faith such as the Greeters Ministry and the Nuture & Care Ministry. Numerous training programs, such as the Lay Ministry Training Program, are provided for both new and experienced members for the purpose of nurturing and uplifting the spirit and mind. Church Policy classes are now taught prior to the installation of new officers. Bible Study is offered during the day and night. A traditional ministry of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) includes the Presbyterian Women. Many men in the church are members of the Men s Council. These groups serve as missionary outlets for adult members. They sponsor a variety of programs, including Hospice support by the Presbyterian Women and an annual community fellowship meal by the Men s Council. C. N. Jenkins believes that it must minister to those persons inside and outside of its physical structure. Such activities include a partnership with the Women s Shelter of the Salvation Army, Rebound Christian Center, Hope Haven, AA and NA. It is also a host and sponsor of an AARP Chapter. Worship continues to be the center of congregational life, focusing upon prayer, praise, music and preaching. The ministry currently offers three worship services in an increased attempt to meet the needs and demands of a growing congregation. The motto of the church, Actively Walking and Working In Christ, provides direction and focus for mission and ministry. Weddings, baptism, revivals and community programs continue to produce new life in our church. The church strives to be spiritled in all of its endeavors and Christ-centered in the fulfillment of the charges which Jesus has given this body. By God s grace and ever-increasing faith of its members, the future of C. N. Jenkins will continue to shine as brightly as it has in its past, thereby continuously ensuring the future of this worshiping community.

6 Pastoral History During its long and illustrious history, our church has thrived under the leadership of seven dynamic and innovative ministers, including: Dr. Charles Newton Jenkins, founder and builder, Reverend Otto E. Saunders, during whose tenure the church was remodeled and new pews and a furnace were installed, Dr. Albert P. Corley, who instituted the printing of a weekly bulletin, brought in the new curriculum of Sunday School literature, and delivered a special sermon to the children every Sunday. Under his administration, the Men s Council was organized. In 1952, the church was renovated and an education building constructed. On July 31, 1952, five months before the new structure was completed, Dr. Corley died. Reverend Samuel J. McLean was installed on February 7, Under his spiritual guidance, weekly religious classes were organized for the junior age children with Mrs. A. P. Corley as director. Mrs. Corley brought recognition to the church when she organized a small children s choir that appeared on the WBT-TV program, Five O Clock Sharp, in Reverend McLean resigned as pastor in December Reverend Earl E. Newberry was installed in August of Under his dynamic leadership, a tremendous increase in membership was noted, a tutoring program for children was developed, a daycare center was established and a gospel choir was organized under the direction of Mrs. Geraldine Brandon. Reverend Newberry took the initial step and made contact with the Redevelopment Committee concerning Brandon Presbyterian Church and the Greenville Community. Reverend Newberry served until Reverend Thomas A. Jenkins, interim pastor from Reverend George C. Goodman was installed August 1, 1977 and served until June He was the first full-time pastor of C. N. Jenkins Memorial United Presbyterian Church. His inspired leadership was demonstrated through the outpouring of spiritual growth manifested throughout the congregation by a tremendous increase in membership. He initiated the first newsletter, the Acolyte Ministry, and additional projects to help pay off the mortgage on July 17, 1985 just eight years after the initial payment. A Mortgage Burning Celebration was held a year later on March 2, During the Anniversary Celebration, a capsule was buried on the Church grounds near the Church bell holding a copy of the burned mortgage, a copy of the final check in the amount of $34,533.54, and artifacts from children and adults of the congregation. The capsule was raised on May 21, Reverend Eustacia Natalie Moffett Marshall, Associate Pastor from

7 Historical Sketch The roots of the Charles Newton Jenkins Memorial United Presbyterian Church were planted in 1894 as a Sunday School in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Will Jackson on McCall Street. Mr. S. W. James, a theological student at Biddle University, was the organizer and leader. The school, aside from emphasizing Christian training, set up a curriculum of reading and writing. As the Sunday School enrollment increased, the school moved to the home of Mr. John Rinehart on Snowball Street. Other students were always on hand to assist Mr. James with the Sunday School and to deliver the sermons. Mr. C. N. Jenkins was one of those students whose interest and dedication led him to join the Sunday School and help Mr. James in 1898, to organize the Greenville Mission Presbyterian Church. Mr. Jenkins entered the seminary at Biddle University. While still a student, and carpenter as well, he with $ and the help of Mr. William Davidson, Mr. R. Z. Beatty, Mr. Peter Crawford, Mr. Pink Davis and Mr. I. A. Saviller, erected a small place of worship on Johnson Street. Upon Completion of the church, Mr. Jenkins became its first pastor on December 24, In only eight years, the congregation had outgrown the space. Mrs. Margaret Barringer donated land for a new building on Maple Street. The church was named Brandon for the Barringer s eldest son. Reverend Jenkins was the contractor of the Maple Street project and was assisted by Mr. Will Davis and Mr. John Baker. Charter members of the church were Mr. Calvin Alexander, Mrs. Julie Dixon, Mr. Joseph Moore, Mrs. Charlotte Moore, Mr. & Mrs. John Rinehart, Mr. Peter Crawford, Mr. J. Adams, Mr. Frank Caldwell, Mr. William Davidson, Mr. Tom Plumer, Mr. Johnson Jordan, Mr. I. A. Saviller and Mr. Jim Williams. After more than eighty years at the site on Maple Street, Brandon had to relocate because of an Urban Renewal Plan. A new church was erected at a site purchased on Statesville Avenue and a proposal was made that the founder, Mr. Charles Newton Jenkins, be memorialized by naming the church in his honor. The proposal to change the name of the church was discussed with the congregation and voted upon. The Presbytery of Catawba was petitioned for approval. On January 20, 1977, the petition was affirmed and the former Brandon United Presbyterian Church became C. N. Jenkins Memorial United Presbyterian Church. Dr. Thomas A. Jenkins, son of the founder, served as interim pastor during the transition from the Maple Street site to Statesville Avenue. He led the congregation into the newly constructed, renamed church for the first worship service on Sunday, March 6, On August 1, 1977, the Reverend George C. Goodman became the sixth pastor of the church and the first full time minister for C. N. Jenkins Memorial United Presbyterian Church. The church has continued to grow and prosper. It has become self-supporting; there has been a substantial increase in membership; a broader based leadership and increased participation in church activities by young adults; and mission outreach has grown through the commitments of groups like the Men s Council, which purchased a van to provide needed transportation. The church building fund, aided tremendously by the United Presbyterian Women (UPW), has been substantially boosted. Life in the church has been characterized by a warm, honey, family-like atmosphere.
