2 Litany for Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. All: In every era, God has chosen men and women to serve the needs of his people. Such a servant was Martin Luther King, Jr., whose birth we celebrate. We are deeply thankful for the life of this twentieth century prophet. May the wisdom and words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. rekindle our faith. May the deep love that Dr. King had for all people be released in us, that we too might work miracles in the lives of those who continue to hate. Dr. King taught that only love can overcome hatred, bitterness and fear. May his struggle for social transformation continue in this generation. May all people come to believe that with perseverance, We Shall Overcome. But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever flowing stream. May the work of Dr. King continue to eradicate racial injustice and its ungodly consequences. Dr. King pursued his dream of racial equality by appealing to the conscience of his enemies. May we continue to cultivate the nonviolent discipline of Dr. King, abandoning unrestrained acts of force. He taught us that a heart full of grace and love is just as important as an education. May the spirit of Dr. King continue to flow through our daily living. He believed in self-respect and dignity, even though he knew that there would be difficult days ahead. May we have the courage of Dr. King as we continue to stand up for justice, reconciliation and truth, despite challenge and controversy. Dr. King said that war is never a victory, regardless of the outcome. May the peace of the risen Christ cause the fury of war to vanish from the face of the earth. Dr. King went to the mountain top; he saw the Promised Land; and he reassured us that we will get there one day. God of Glory, be with us on the journey.

4 9 Things You May Not Know About Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 1. King s birth name was Michael, not Martin. The civil rights leader was born Michael King, Jr. on January 15, In 1934, however, his father, a pastor at Atlanta s Ebenezer Baptist Church, traveled to Germany and became inspired by the Protestant Reformation leader Martin Luther. As a result, King, Sr. changed his own name as well as that of his 5-year-old son. 2. King entered college at the age of 15. King was such a gifted student that he skipped grades nine and 12 before enrolling in 1944 at Morehouse College, the alma mater of his father and maternal grandfather. Although he was the son, grandson and great-grandson of Baptist ministers, King did not intend to follow the family vocation until Morehouse president Benjamin E. Mays, a noted theologian, convinced him otherwise. King was ordained before graduating college with a degree in sociology. 5. King was jailed 29 times. According to the King Center, the civil rights leader went to jail nearly 30 times. He was arrested for acts of civil disobedience and on trumped-up charges, such as when he was jailed in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1956 for driving 30 miles per hour in a 25-mile-per-hour zone. 6. King narrowly escaped an assassination attempt a decade before his death. On September 20, 1958, King was in Harlem signing copies of his new book, Stride Toward Freedom, in Blumstein s department store when he was approached by Izola Ware Curry. The woman asked if he was Martin Luther King, Jr. After he said yes, Curry said, I ve been looking for you for five years, and she plunged a seveninch letter opener into his chest. The tip of the blade came to rest alongside his aorta, and King underwent hours of delicate emergency surgery. Surgeons later told King that just one sneeze could have punctured the aorta and killed him. From his hospital bed where he convalesced for weeks, King issued a statement affirming his nonviolent principles and saying he felt no ill will toward his mentally ill attacker. 7. King s last public speech foretold his death. King had come to Memphis in April 1968 to support the strike of the city s black garbage workers, and in a speech on the night before his assassination, he told an audience at Mason Temple Church: Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I m not concerned about that now I ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land. And I m happy tonight. I m not worried about anything. I m not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord. 8. Members of King s family did not believe James Earl Ray acted alone. Ray, a career criminal, pled guilty to King s assassination but later recanted. King s son, Dexter, met publicly with Ray in 1997 and argued for the case to be reopened. King s widow, Coretta, believed the Mafia and local, state and federal government agencies were deeply involved in the murder. She praised the result of a 1999 civil trial in which a Memphis jury decided the assassination was the result of a conspiracy and that Ray was set up to take the continued on next page

5 today s scripture MORNING SCRIPTURE: Esther 4:1-17 (NLT) 1 When Mordecai learned about all that had been done, he tore his clothes, put on burlap and ashes, and went out into the city, crying with a loud and bitter wail. 2 He went as far as the gate of the palace, for no one was allowed to enter the palace gate while wearing clothes of mourning. 3 And as news of the king s decree reached all the provinces, there was great mourning among the Jews. They fasted, wept, and wailed, and many people lay in burlap and ashes. 4 When Queen Esther s maids and eunuchs came and told her about Mordecai, she was deeply distressed. She sent clothing to him to replace the burlap, but he refused it. 5 Then Esther sent for Hathach, one of the king s eunuchs who had been appointed as her attendant. She ordered him to go to Mordecai and find out what was troubling him and why he was in mourning. 6 So Hathach went out to Mordecai in the square in front of the palace gate. 7 Mordecai told him the whole story, including the exact amount of money Haman had promised to pay into the royal treasury for the destruction of the Jews. 8 Mordecai gave Hathach a copy of the decree issued in Susa that called for the death of all Jews. He asked Hathach to show it to Esther and explain the situation to her. He also asked Hathach to direct her to go to the king to beg for mercy and plead for her people. 9 So Hathach returned to Esther with Mordecai s message. 10 Then Esther told Hathach to go back and relay this message to Mordecai: 11 All the king s officials and even the people in the provinces know that anyone who appears before the king in his inner court without being invited is doomed to die unless the king holds out his gold scepter. And the king has not called for me to come to him for thirty days. 12 So Hathach gave Esther s message to Mordecai. 13 Mordecai sent this reply to Esther: Don t think for a moment that because you re in the palace you will escape when all other Jews are killed. 14 If you keep quiet at a time like this, deliverance and relief for the Jews will arise from some other place, but you and your relatives will die. Who knows if perhaps you were made queen for just such a time as this? 15 Then Esther sent this reply to Mordecai: 16 Go and gather together all the Jews of Susa and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. My maids and I will do the same. And then, though it is against the law, I will go in to see the king. If I must die, I must die. 17 So Mordecai went away and did everything as Esther had ordered him. 9 Things You May Not Know About Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (continued from previous page) blame. A U.S. Department of Justice investigation released in 2000 reported no evidence of a conspiracy. 9. King s mother was also slain by a bullet. On June 30, 1974, as 69-year-old Alberta Williams King played the organ at a Sunday service inside Ebenezer Baptist Church, Marcus Wayne Chenault, Jr. rose from the front pew, drew two pistols and began to fire shots. One of the bullets struck and killed King, who died steps from where her son had preached nonviolence. The deranged gunman said that Christians were his enemy and that although he had received divine instructions to kill King s father, who was in the congregation, he killed King s mother instead because she was closer. The shooting also left a church deacon dead. Chenault received a death penalty sentence that was later changed to life imprisonment, in part due to the King family s opposition to capital punishment.

6 ordination & installation *Recognition of Officers *Ordination and Installation Litany: There are different gifts, But it is the same Spirit who gives them. There are different ways of serving God, But it is the same Lord who is served. God works through different men in different ways, But it is the same God who achieves his purpose through them all. Each one is given a gift by the Spirit, To use it for the common good. Together we are the body of Christ, And individually members of him. Though we have different gifts, together we are a ministry of reconciliation led by the risen Christ. We work and pray to make his church useful in the world, and we call men and women to faith, so that, in the end, every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Within our common ministry, some members are chosen for particular work as ministers of the word, ruling elders, or deacons. In ordination, we recognize these special ministries, remembering that our Lord Jesus said: Whoever among you wants to be great must become the servant of all, and if he wants to be first among you, he must be the slave of all men and women! *Ordination *Let all the people join in the following prayer: UNISON: God of grace, who called us to a common ministry as ambassadors of Christ, trusting us with the message of reconciliation: give us courage and discipline to follow where your servants rightly lead us; that together we may declare your wonderful deeds and show your love to the world; through Jesus Christ the Lord of all. Amen.
