ENDORSEMENTS Paul and Kristen have a love for the people of Portland that is contagious. We lookforward to partnering with them now and as their church makes disciples and becomes a church planting church in the city. -Brad Watson, Elder at Bread & Wine Portland, OR. Paul Hoffman is fully committed to loving people while serving the kingdom. With a keen understanding of the church and its mission, Paul lives sent and challenges others to heed the call as well. -Jonathan Nelms, Lead Pastor at Covenant Church Cookeville, TN The Hoffman s understand, enjoy, and live out the gospel in the everyday spaces of their home, neighborhood, and city. And just as important; they invite others along to do the same. We are delighted that their church plant is one that takes seriously the tenets of our historical faith, AND practices it in their specific context. - Sam Smith, Groups and Church Planting Pastor at Reach Church Seattle, WA. Paul and Kristen Hoffman helped lay a strong foundation for rich, meaningful life in community during their time in Fort Worth as they helped plant The City Church. We re honored to support them as they seek to do the same in the great city of Portland. Our church family prayerfully trusts that God will use the people of KALEO as His ministers there. -Ben Connelly, Elder at For Worth City Church; Director of Church Planting Soma What a honor to support KALEO Communities and the Hoffmans as they seek to move out of the greatest story ever told as a people who find this story to be their only hope to a people in desperate need to hear and experience the greatest story ever told. I invite you to join them as they seek to make disciples in Portland OR! -Dr. Wes Hughes, Urban Church Planting Catalyst, NWBC 2 CONTACT INFO Paul Hoffman 4110 SE Hawthorne Blvd #643 Portland, OR (817) paul@kaleopdx.com

introduction THE STORY GOD IS TELLING HIS STORY We are a story formed people. Nearly every culture in the history of humanity has used story to share the important things of life that must be transferred from generation to generation. Everyone loves a good story. Americans spend millions of dollars to hear stories through cinema, literature, and music. We believe that we are a story formed people because God is an author, He has created the greatest story ever told. We are invited into that story, but we reject the invitation God hasn t rejected us. GOD ENTERS THE STORY God is not simply a disconnected author. He actually inserts Himself into the story as the main character, our hero. In a moment when all hope had been lost and people stopped being able to hear from God, Jesus breaks in to restore a relationship that was broken through sin and death. Jesus, lived the life we could not, offered himself in death in a way that we never could, and rose from the dead in victory. WE ARE A PART OF THE STORY Jesus entry into the story offered us a way to participate in the story. Jesus life modeled for us that when we believe we enter into the family of God, loving Him, each other, and our neighbors. As we live as a family of servant missionaries we join in the story. We invite others to hear the story and see their place in it too. SOME ARE RUNNING & SOME HAVE NEVER HEARD Many people have rejected or tried to alter this story, and some are completely unaware there is a story happening. People roam through life looking for wholeness, worth, value. They are left searching for meaning outside of the very story that brings definition and meaning to all of life. We must join God in the story, highlight the story of God in every persons life, and call them to awareness and belief through the story of the Gospel. THE STORY CONTINUES IN PORTLAND 4

part I THE CITY IN THE CITY, FOR THE CITY People are flocking to Portland, we receive roughly 1000 new residents a month. Chuck Palahniuk released a cultural commentary on Portland in 2003 giving Portland the moniker as a city of Fugitives and Refugees. He highlights that most of the people who move to Portland are either getting away or searching for something. Many of these people are religiously unaffiliated, or jaded. This means that there is a huge opportunity for the Gospel in Portland. Many people here are not hostile to the Gospel as much as they are ignorant of it. Portland is known for its uniqueness, it is why one of the city s slogans is keep Portland weird. We have found that a large percentage of the population is under reached, and there is a need for a variety of models and expressions of the church to see people awakened to the Gospel and believe. 6

part II THE VISION CALLING THE CITY OF PORTLAND TO EXPERIENCE THE REDEMPTIVE RULE AND REIGN OF JESUS CHRIST. Our Vision: Live as a FAMILY of SERVANT MISSIONARIES displaying the love of God the Father, through Jesus His Son, in the power of the Holy Spirit. We do this through allowing a place of belonging on the path to belief, and the reproduction of healthy churches throughout Portland and the world. 4 Pillars: At every level, from DNA groups, Missional Communities, and Gatherings, we follow the 4 Pillars of Covenant: Gathering, Word, Table, Sending. In the covenants of Scripture we see each of these parts present and we believe they give us the foundation of faith formation. The Father gathers us to Himself and together, We grow in our understanding of God and how we should live through the word, we deepen and nourish our relationship with God, and one another at the table, and we are sent out to live all of these things out in the victory of Christ. Being sent out then calls us back together to continue in a pattern of formation. Our Rhythms are a way for us to equip our church to live well as missionaries in the city. We also believe that these rhythms help us to best connect with not yet believing people in outreach, through church gatherings, throwing parties, and other hospitality focused ministries. Share Stories: God has been unfolding his story since before time began. We believe we are participants in the story and need to understand it and see how our lives intersect with it. Therefore, we regularly reacquaint ourselves with the story by interacting with God s Word. We look for ways and times to tell the story often. We also take time to listen to others stories and help them find their lives within God s story. (Genesis 1:1-2; John 1:1; Psalm 1; 2 Timothy 3:16-17) Bless: God desires that all nations - all people - would be blessed through Jesus. And now, as his Body, we believe we live out this mission as we bless others. We intentionally seek God s direction for who he would have us tangibly bless each week. (Genesis 12:1-3; Ephesians 1:22-23; 2:8-10; 1 Peter 2:12) 8

Listen: Jesus listened to God in prayer to know his Father s will. We are also called to listen to God. We listen backward by regularly interacting with God s Word-the story and the Son. We also believe he speaks today through his Spirit in us and through creation. We spend time actively listening forward to hear what God is saying to us today. (Mark 1:35-37; John 16:7-15; Hebrews 1:1-3; Romans 1:20) Celebrate: God calls people to regularly celebrate his goodness and grace. We gather weekly in missional communities and regularly as a larger family, to share stories and celebrate all that God is doing in and amongst us. We invite everyone to these celebrations as a way of displaying God s glory. (Leviticus 23; Acts 2:42-47; Hebrews 10:24-25) Eat: Meals are a daily reminder of our common need for God and his faithfulness to provide both physically and spiritually. Jesus called us to remember him and his sacrifice for us through a meal. When we eat together, we commune around this truth. We regularly eat meals with those not in our immediate family or circle of close friends, discipling them toward a life of dependence on God. (Leviticus 23; Matthew 6:11; 26:17-30; Acts 2:46-47; Romans 12:13) Recreate: After powerfully and joyfully creating the universe, God rested. We were created in his image and therefore were made to joyfully create and rest as well. We regularly take time to rest, play, create, and restore beauty in ways that reflect what God is like to our community. (Genesis 1-2:3; Deuteronomy 5:12; Mark 2:23-28; Hebrews 4) 9

part III THE STRATEGY LOVE PEOPLE, AND LET GOD BUILD HIS CHURCH - RICK WARREN TWO FRONT DOORS Part of what we have observed about the story of Portland is most people explore what it means to follow Jesus through two avenues. The first way is that people prefer small gatherings where they can ask lots of questions, and find belonging with a group of people as they are believing. The second way is that people come and observe church activity in a similar way that they audit a class at university, trying to learn what this is all about before they fully commit to study and practice. As we engage in outreach and ministry in the city we offer two front doors (Missional Community and Gatherings) for people to enter into participation with KALEO. 1. MISSIONAL COMMUNITIES are groups of people who are learning what it means to follow Jesus in their thoughts, words, and actions. These communities are how we organize the church as we exist in pockets throughout the city and look to plant new churches in the city. These communities meet weekly where they share a meal, participate in a conversation informed by a selected passage from the bible, pray for one another and the city, and are sent out to live the Gospel. 11

2. GATHERINGS These weekly gatherings follow the 4 pillars of covenant: gathering, word, table, sending. Following the four pillars leads us through an intentional liturgy that allows for full participation by everyone. We will sing together, participate in responsive readings and prayers, study the bible, and take communion together. Gatherings, just like missional communities are an opportunity for people to be introduced to Jesus and our church. D.N.A. GROUPS [Discipleship, Nurture, Accountability] These groups consist of three people [men with men, women with women] within a particular missional community, meeting regularly to be known and bring the Gospel to light in each others lives to grow in and live in the power of the Gospel. Path Building Every house has a path leading to its front door. It is the road that people walk to experi ence the warmth of friendship and family. Some examples of what the path to the front doors of KALEO look like: Backyard Cookouts Block Parties Street Fair Outreach STORYLINE OF KALEO COMMUNITIES CHAPTER 1:: 2015 Arrive in Portland, develop core team and begin meeting as a Missional Community. CHAPTER 2:: 2016 Begin Monthly Worship Gatherings, develop leaders, multiply second Missional Community, develop elder team. CHAPTER 3:: 2017 Move from Monthly to weekly Worship Gatherings, continue multiplying Missional Communities, leadership development, look toward adding another staff minister, lay path to be a sending church. CHAPTER 4:: 2018 Take significant steps to be self sustaining, continued multiplication of Missional Communities, weekly Worship Gatherings, leadership development. 12

part VI PARTNERSHIP GRABBING A CORNER Partnership is a multifaceted relationship between KALEO Communities, other churches and individuals. Partnership can be categorized by many different things. Here are some ways that we are asking partners to grab a corner: PRAY We ask that you and your church fellowship commit to regularly pray for the work of KALEO Communities in Portland, and for the redemption of the city. It is in the diligence of the people of God to pray to the Lord of the Harvest that we see laborers come to the city, and a harvest reaped for the sake of the Kingdom GIVE Being a church plant in the urban core of a west coast city requires many resources and support from outside sources in the early years of the church. It is our desire to have the planting pastor be freed up to build community relationships, network with other church leaders, develop leadership, exegeteing culture, and making disciples. Because we are starting from very little, our support will mainly have to come from outside sources. By God s grace we hope to become self-sustaining within 5 years and become a sending church to support future church plants. PRAYER POINTS: God would continue to unite our core team around the Gospel and its work in our lives. God would reveal people of peace to us. God would work mightily through the witness of KALEO seeing people find belief in Jesus. God would reveal the de-churched of our city and redeem their walk with Him. We would live well under the redemptive rule and reign of Jesus, and that would be seen by others. 14

Our financial needs will include: pastor salary and benefits, ministry expenses, and occupancy costs. Some notes on financial partnership: We are looking to develop support for as long as it takes (we are projecting 5 years based on similar models in the area, but this can be as many as 7 years, being in an urban west coast city.) Commitment to support a model that contextualizes methods to best communicate the Gospel to Portlanders. Ongoing monthly support helps us to better budget each year, but one time gifts are very helpful. Projected three year need: FY 18 $150,000 ($12500/ mo) FY 19 $180,000 ($15000/ mo) FY 20 $210,000 ($17500/ mo) JOIN We believe that partners should help facilitate the vision and mission of KALEO Communities in their contexts. We hope that as a partner you would come and work alongside of us in Portland and even send missionaries to come and live in Portland as a part of the effort to see Portland redeemed. As we plan for needs in the coming years we hope to enjoy financial partnerships from churches, organizations, and individuals in these early years of KALEO Communities. While we love these partnerships we are deeply committed to challenging our growing church to tithe and start us on the road to self-sustainability. BUDGET BREAKDOWN FY 17 Personnel Ministry Administration Missions $120,000 ($10,000/ mo) 50% $60,000 ($5000/ mo) 35% $42,000 ($3500/mo) 15% $18,000 ($1500/mo) 10% of all internal 10% of all internal 10% of all internal giving 15

part V THE PLANTER ABOUT PAUL Growing up in an under churched area in Northern California, I know intimately what it means to follow Jesus in a where it that isn t normative to follow Jesus. I came to faith in Jesus in 2001 through a family who faithfully loved me for years. Most of my life leading up to that moment I sought to find wholeness through a variety of avenues, yet lived in a constant state of emptiness and dissatisfaction. Finally the Spirit broke into my life and I experienced the overwhelming love of God, and it began to transform me. Soon after believing in Jesus, I began serving in student ministry as a volunteer. That service led to an opportunity to be a youth ministry intern, where God made it abundantly clear that he was calling me to give my life to the vocational equipping of saints for the work of the ministry. In 2003 I started a Bachelor of Applied Theology at California Baptist University. While attending CBU I served in many roles. I served as a youth minister for a local church, I led music in chapel, and in my last couple years worked with four other students to plant a church. This was the moment that God used to shape what equipping the saints for ministry would ultimately look like. PRAYER POINTS: God would continue to unite our core team around the Gospel and its work in our lives. God would reveal people of peace to us. God would work mightily through the witness of KALEO seeing people 16

After graduating from CBU in 2007, I married Kristen and we moved to Fort Worth, TX so I could attendsouthwestern Baptist Theological Seminary where I studied Church Planting. While at SWBTS Kristen and I helped to plant Fort Worth City Church. There I served as a church planting resident, and together Kristen and I served as core leadership, leading a missional community. I finished my Master of Arts in Christian Education in Church Planting in December of In June of 2011 we welcomed Addison, our first child, into the world. Then in September of 2011 we moved to Cookeville, TN to plant Covenant Church with Jonathan Nelms. Over the four years that we lived in Cookeville, we saw Covenant Church blossom. It was a season of beautiful ministry seeing lives changed. It was also a season when God began to use all of mine and Kristen s collective experiences and put them together in a cohesive ministry form. Serving as the Associate Pastor at Covenant Church I was in charge of developing and implementing Missional Communities, assisting with pastoral care and ministry, and other administrative needs for the church. In 2013 Covenant Church ordained me into the Gospel Ministry. This was a beautiful recognition of our ministry with the church, and the ministry that God had given us to do for and among the church. Toward the end of that year, we also welcomed Wesley, our second child, into the world. Then in 2014 we began taking steps toward planting KALEO in Portland, OR, and in 2015 we arrived on the field to begin the work of planting this church. Kristen holds a Bachelor of Science in Sports Management and MA in Christian Education with a Youth Ministry Concentration. Paul Holds a Bachelor of Applied Theology and MA in Christian Education with a Concentration in Church Planting.
