Refrain Have a little talk with Jesus; Tell Him all about our troubles, He will hear our faintest cry, And He will answer by and by; Feel a little prayer wheel turning, And you know a little fire is burning, You will find a little talk with Jesus makes it right. Sometimes my path seems drear, Without a ray of cheer, And then a cloud of doubt may hide the light of day; The mists of sin may rise, And hide the starry skies, But just a little talk with Jesus clears the way. Refrain I may have doubts and fears, My eyes be filled with tears, But Jesus is a friend who watches day and night; I go to Him in prayer, He knows my every care, And just a little talk with Jesus makes it right. Refrain Rev. Dr. Jerry L. Cannon, Senior Pastor Rev. Phanta Lansden, Associate Pastor 1421 Statesville Ave., Charlotte, NC (fax)

2 today s scripture WELCOME TO C.N. JENKINS MEMORIAL PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Esther 4 (NIV) 4 When Mordecai learned of all that had been done, he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and ashes, and went out into the city, wailing loudly and bitterly. 2 But he went only as far as the king s gate, because no one clothed in sackcloth was allowed to enter it. 3 In every province to which the edict and order of the king came, there was great mourning among the Jews, with fasting, weeping and wailing. Many lay in sackcloth and ashes. 4 When Esther s eunuchs and female attendants came and told her about Mordecai, she was in great distress. She sent clothes for him to put on instead of his sackcloth, but he would not accept them. 5 Then Esther summoned Hathach, one of the king s eunuchs assigned to attend her, and ordered him to find out what was troubling Mordecai and why. 6 So Hathach went out to Mordecai in the open square of the city in front of the king s gate. 7 Mordecai told him everything that had happened to him, including the exact amount of money Haman had promised to pay into the royal treasury for the destruction of the Jews. 8 He also gave him a copy of the text of the edict for their annihilation, which had been published in Susa, to show to Esther and explain it to her, and he told him to instruct her to go into the king s presence to beg for mercy and plead with him for her people. 9 Hathach went back and reported to Esther what Mordecai had said. 10 Then she instructed him to say to Mordecai, 11 All the king s officials and the people of the royal provinces know that for any man or woman who approaches the king in the inner court without being summoned the king has but one law: that they be put to death unless the king extends the gold scepter to them and spares their lives. But thirty days have passed since I was called to go to the king. 12 When Esther s words were reported to Mordecai, 13 he sent back this answer: Do not think that because you are in the king s house you alone of all the Jews will escape. 14 For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this? 15 Then Esther sent this reply to Mordecai: 16 Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my attendants will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish. 17 So Mordecai went away and carried out all of Esther s instructions.

6 TODAY S SERVICE August 26 Presbyterian Collaboration Service Bulletin Insert From the time of the Protestant Reformation, Presbyterians have strongly supported education for children. In particular in this community, Covenant, C. N. Jenkins, Davidson College, First, Myers Park, Sardis and Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Churches provide vital support through ongoing partnerships with seven public schools. These partnerships have proven to be blessings to each congregation, enabling hundreds of church members to engage directly in the lives of the children and their families who attend their partner public school. Thousands of meaningful and ongoing relationships have been created and many children have been helped. In January, 2018, these seven churches began a collaboration with one another in an effort to learn from one another, and to find and enact solutions that will enable all of God s children to participate in and enjoy the fullness of life through education. These seven churches are using today s service to affirm their collaboration, to celebrate the fulfilling relationships their congregations enjoy with their respective public schools, and to provide ongoing witness of our acceptance of Christ s challenge to provide for the least of these in our community. SEVEN SCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS *Covenant Presbyterian Church: Since 2002, Covenant has been in partnership with Highland Renaissance Academy, a K 5 school serving the Sugar Creek neighborhood, working closely alongside staff, students and families. Covenant volunteers support staff training and appreciation, student tutoring and character development through different programs such as Read, Roar and Soar, and meet material needs for families. Volunteers undergo training in order to tutor in various math and reading programs, and participate in literacy seminars in conjunction with ReadCharlotte starting in the fall. Covenant hosts and facilitates a Freedom School Partners summer program, sends Highland students to Camp Grier annually, and has provided a grant to the school to improve its athletic facilities. *C. N. Jenkins Presbyterian Church: CNJ has partnered with Walter G. Byers Elementary to provide uniforms, support for the parent-teacher organization, volunteers for the various school events, and book bags and school supplies. For eight years, CNJ has partnered with Freedom School Partners to provide a six week summer school to support the growth and development of students who are below grade level in literacy and math. *Davidson College Presbyterian Church: DCPC has been in partnership with Blythe Elementary school for five years, providing classroom volunteers, teacher support such as back-to-school luncheons, service projects inside and outside the school, and guest readers. DCPC provide tutors in the North Star reading program, and manpower for special events such as the BOOK FAIR and special holiday celebrations. In the summer, we partner with Caterpillar Ministries to provide weekly food bags for the families of the children who live in the Huntington Green neighborhood. *First Presbyterian Church: FPC has partnered with Westerly Hills Academy for 18 years. Members serve as reading and math tutors, lunch buddies, Success Coaches, as well as provide classroom supplies, teacher appreciation meals, parent dinners and weekend food bags. FPC hosts the BELL summer program for 60 rising first third graders and sends 50+ children to Camp Grier for a week each summer. FPC has helped make possible a Communities in Schools site coordinator, a BELL pre-k pilot program, Let Me Run, and

7 an afterschool STEM program operated by Discovery Place. In FPC will begin participating in the ReadCharlotte Transformation Network, working to improve literacy scores through book drives, family support, tutoring and summer programs. *Myers Park Presbyterian: MPPC has partnered with Billingsville Elementary School for more than 10 years, providing reading and math tutors, lunch buddies, Success Coaches, classroom helpers, Mindfulness Supporters, gardeners, school supplies and assistance with special events. MPPC has helped make possible an on-site New Teacher Mentor, a Communities in Schools coordinator and an afterschool and summer program operated by the YWCA. This coming year, MPPC will emphasize literacy in support of ReadCharlotte s 80% goal at grade level by MPPC is grateful to be part of the Grier Heights community and will continue to support the combined Billingsville Leadership Academy/Cotswold Elementary School as they merge. *Sardis Presbyterian: Sardis has been in partnership with Rama Road Elementary school since Sardis provides staff support throughout the year, purchases teacher and student supplies, provides tutoring, participates in the Second Harvest Backpack program, purchases books for students for summer reading, and meets needs as they arise. Volunteers participate in tutoring, media assistance, lunch buddies, and provide meals for school events. *Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian: Selwyn has enjoyed a 17 year partnership with Montclaire Elementary School. Members are classroom volunteers, lunch buddies, book club facilitators, media Center volunteers, exam proctors, Career Fair guests, Project Harmony afterschool support, afterschool program volunteers, North Star tutors, Heart tutors, and Augustine Literacy Project tutors. Members have built a garden, conducted annual book drives, provided food for children s weekend backpacks, delivered staff appreciation bags, sponsored annual mission Christmas tree with gifts for students in classrooms, and provided food for teacher training days and teacher appreciation. In the summer, Selwyn partners with Freedom School Partners and St. Andrews United Methodist Church to sponsor a six-week Freedom School. THE RELIGIOUS COMMUNITY S CHALLENGE In a November 1992 speech to Child Watch in Charlotte, Marian Wright Edelman defined the challenge of children s issues for us in the faith community: [We must] examine why it is that we can stand by and let our children who are the weakest among us, the most vulnerable among us, the ones that we are here to protect, suffer so much. The religious community must define these concerns of children as morally wrong [in order for us] to find solutions This we know: - Over 50,000 children in our public schools live in poverty - 39 % of our third graders in CMS are not reading on grade level - Children not on grade level are 4 times more likely to drop out of school - A church helping as few as 25 more third graders read on grade level can turn around an individual school Please prayerfully consider what you can do, what more this church can do, and how we can help more churches to become engaged in the lives and education of the community s children.
