These choice dollars are not guaranteed so if the allocation is depleted there will be no benefit. To designate call Thrivent at or on line at Thrivent. com. Thrivent Action Team Projects Thrivent members have the opportunity to lead 2 action team events a year and receive $250 seed money for the project. This year our church applied and received approval for 7 projects including French toast breakfast, VBS, spring clean-up, salad luncheon(2), Christmas bake sale, and the garden. Also, the pre-school received four grants. If you are not a Thrivent member but have an idea or need, contact a Thrivent advocate who can apply for you. Any Thrivent member interested in applying for an event please contact Joyce Beard as she is our church coordinator so events are not duplicated. Once the project is completed share your story, photos and report your results before applying to lead you next Thrivent Action Team event. These Action Team projects allow us to finance needed projects for our church so we encourage participation. Local advocates are Joyce Beard, La Vern Fritz, Darrell Multhaup, Jean Neeck, Arlene Tullius, Marvin Wolfmeyer, Tony Gilman and Shirley Ballard. 2

Born in Germany in 1483, Martin Luther became one of the most influential figures in Christian history when he began the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century. He called into question some of the basic tenets of Roman Catholicism, and his followers soon split from the Roman Catholic Church to begin the Protestant tradition. There are a few events happening commemorating the Reformation: Come and join us at Mt. Calvary in Richfield ( th Avenue South) for a day in the life of Martin Luther. The event will be held on Saturday, February 18 from 8:30am-2:15pm. The Luther movie will be shown along with four pastors presenting breakout sessions including: Luther and his music by Rev. Matthew Johnson; Luther and the Small Catechism by Rev. Donavon Riley; Luther and Vocation by Rev. Dean Gade; and Luther and the family by Rev. Mark Johnson. The cost is $20 which includes bread and coffee at registration, lunch and selecting two of the four sessions. Please contact the church office via info@mtcalvaryrichfield.org or phone: to register or if you have questions. The registration deadline is February 12. REFORMATION TOUR President Dean and Susie Nadasdy will host a 500th Anniversary Reformation tour of Germany September 22-October 3, The trip will include visits to the historic Reformation sites as well as the German and Austrian Alps. President Nadasdy, a former parish pastor and seminary professor, will provide brief Bible studies and lectures on Reformation themes. For more information, brochure, and registration form, contact the Nadasdys at dean.nadasdy@mnsdistrict.org. The joint Minnesota South/Minnesota North/Concordia University 500th anniversary Reformation service will be held at 4:00pm on Sunday, October 29, 2017 at Concordia, St. Paul. 3

January Preschool Chatter Heidi Braun, Director/Teacher Jessie Erdmann, Teacher Jenifer Clemons, Paraprofessional Carly Lass, Paraprofessional Happy February! I love February short and sweet. I especially like the sweet part! Speaking of sweet On Monday, February 13 we will kick-off our annual candy bar fundraiser. You can help us out by purchasing some candy bars or take an entire box of 60 bars to sell. The bars cost $1 each. If allowable at your place of employment, we d appreciate if you would bring a box to work and sell them for us. If you would like to get a box, please stop in the preschool on a weekday morning or see a preschool board member on a Sunday morning. The box can be paid for when you pick it up or after the bars are all sold. This year the profits will go toward air conditioning and possibly new hallway cubbies. We love our new children s chairs. They are so bright, colorful, and new-looking! We had a setback with the teacher s chairs, but should have new ones soon. We also hope to order one or two wiggle chairs, which are special chairs to help our busier children concentrate. Our Fabulous Friday group travelled to the MN Marine Art Museum last month to see the famous works of art and to do some hands-on activities with the docents. Local well-known artist Mary Singer visited the preschool. She showed us samples of her art and did a lesson on cartooning. We love because he first loved us. 1 John 4:19 6

What is the Greatest Love Story in History? How would you answer that question? Antony and Cleopatra? Romeo and Juliet? A movie like Love Story? Perhaps a story from the Bible like Jacob and Rachel or Joseph and Mary? My pick would be God s love for his people! John 3:16, For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. God s love for us is unconditional. It is unconditional because God s love is not requested or respected by most people; it is not often reflected as it should be by his children. When things go wrong in the world, most people blame God. People fail to see God s love in the midst of tragedy and trouble. Yet, God still loves the world unconditionally. God s love is unconditional because he gives it freely. Without hesitation, without debate, deliberation or condition, what God gave was his one-and-only son, Jesus. No other love story in history can match that selfless sacrifice. So God loves us that much no qualifications to measure up to, no achievements to master, no requirements to maintain. It is an unconditional love. A love that has no limits and knows no bounds. A love that will never end. Sadly, there are billions of people in the world who do not know of the Greatest Love Story in History. Those of us who know God s love must take it to those who have yet to hear about it. Pastor Kevin 7

Redeemer Lutheran Church has electric/handicap doors! People of Faith, aging members, visitors and wheelchair users well appreciate this new addition. Try the doors the next time you are using the front entrance by pushing the button on the post outside the church. Dave Przybylski, along with suggestions from a few Redeemer members, has been working with Tom s Lock Service and Dick s Electric to install the power openers and electricity. Tom s Lock Service has been very generous to Redeemer. They not only did the power openers for the handicap doors, but also replaced door closers on 8 of the inside doors. The money for the handicap door project came from a designated fund developed by the Przybylski family in memory of Mary Lou. Thank you to all who contributed to that fund. Thank you Dave, for supervising this huge project! Job well done!. As I leave the position of Chairperson for the Properties Board, I want to thank everyone who helped maintain and improve Redeemer Lutheran Church the past years. There are too many projects to mention at this time, as well as the many members stepping up to assist even when they were not on the Properties Board. All of your hard work and diligence is greatly appreciated by me and the rest of the congregation. Joyce Beard Because He Lives ~ A Bible study through music and scripture Join us every Thursday from 6:30 8:00pm beginning February 9 th at Central Lutheran Church in Winona. All are welcome anyone of any faith ~ singers and non-singers welcome. There are twenty well known hymns/gospel songs to been chosen. We will study the origin and message of each song, the scripture related to it, and share our personal connections to the songs. The music will be learned during the course of the study and then performed to raise money for a local cause. You do not have to be a singer to join the bible study. The Holy Spirit was the inspiration for the Bible study and we pray that He will guide us throughout the year, growing our faith and increasing our understanding of God s Word, and deepening our personal relationship with God. If you have any questions, contact Debbie Berhow at or Bruce Odell. 8

Dear M.C. In this article, congregation members pose questions to M.C. (our Music Coordinator) who thus responds with whatever words of wisdom the Lord chooses to give him. Dear M.C., Have you decided whether to accept the Music Coordinator position yet? MC: The simple fact that this article exists probably makes the question moot, but this was asked so frequently that it begs a response. It was asked often because there was a long time between when the position was offered and when the position was accepted. And what took so long? There were several reasons: 1. There needed to be meetings to ensure that my vision for the music ministry at Redeemer aligned with the congregations, and the meetings happened over several weeks. 2. A firm time limit for the duties needed to be imbedded in my brain. Perfectionist tendencies had to be tempered so that the position would not consume more than an appropriate amount of time. 3. Lots of prayers were offered to determine whether God was calling me to the position, and whether my other obligations of family, church, and work would be unacceptably comprised. Ultimately, God guided all of the above, and Redeemer now has a new Music Coordinator (and a new piano!) If you have a question you would like addressed, please feel free to ask our Music Coordinator personally, send an to paklemp@hotmail.com, or call him at
