2 To ALL the Youth of Mt. Calvary, Our theme for the year in Youth Ministry and for this Annual Youth Day celebration is, Empowered and Unashamed, from Romans 1:16a. We have been working, collectively, all year to help each of you to know that from the beginning of time, God has loved you, anointed you, and empowered you to do great things. In fact, He said, Greater things than these shall you do in my name If you get nothing else out of this time here today, please try to leave with the understanding that outside of God, you can do nothing, but you can do all things through Christ who is your strength. I ask nothing more of you than simply this, TRY GOD FOR YOURSELF, FIND OUT WHAT IT MEANS TO HAVE GOD IN YOUR LIFE. Don t believe the hype, get with God first hand. God is not man, He is not shy, nor is He bashful. He is not afraid of you, nor is He afraid to speak with you. He will not lie to you or deceive you. He just wants to love you and have you love him back! And you cannot do that if you are timid, afraid, ashamed, or unwilling to know God for yourself. God rewards those who diligently seek him! God did not give you a spirit of fear, but of POWER and a sound mind! A mind to think and to use that POWER! If you know that God has empowered you, then you must also know that when things get tough, and you don t know what to do, you can lean and depend on him. Your father loves you with an uncompromising love, an unconditional love, an all - encompassing love. Tell him your thoughts, fears, and concerns; he cares for you, he will see you through! Each of you is ending a chapter in your lives and starting another, whether it is going from one grade to another, elementary school to middle school, from middle school to high school, from high school to college, from undergrad to postgraduate work, or straight to the workforce. It really does not matter what the change is; God wants you to know that amid constant change in your world, he will always be CONSTANT. He said, I am the Lord your God and I change NOT! Wherever you go, whatever you do, keep God with you. Stay connected with him, commune with him, communicate with him, and experience him. Why? Because if you do, then you will know the POWER that is our Lord, and as you walk in that power you will never be ashamed of Him, or who you are becoming in Him! I am so grateful for God allowing me the opportunity to serve you. Know that I love you, your family and your church families love you, but above all know that the Lord our God the creator of all heaven and earth, LOVES YOU! Be Blessed! Your servant, His son! Youth Minister 2

3 Rev. Devin Turner Creative Communications Pastor, Zion Church, Church Landover, MD CEO/Founder Disciples Thru Media At the age of six, Sterling Devin Turner accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. But from early elementary through middle school, he had all kinds of struggles of insecurity and depression that led to two suicide attempts. As a freshman in high school, Devin was confronted with obstacles obstac that many teenagers face, which caused him to question God's existence. Along with peer pressure, low self esteem and an envy of the street life, he decided to handle life's problems on his own, instead of seeking God for the answers. He began affiliations ions with known drug dealers in his school, school but it didn't take Devin long to realize that something just wasn't setting well with him about his new lifestyle of choice. Soon afterwards, Devin started reading the Bible for himself so that he could know iff it was truth or not. In his junior and senior years of high school, he led a daily Bible study where he challenged his peers to pursue Godly G odly lifestyles through obedience to God s Word. After graduating from high school, he attended Bowie State University,(BSU), where he led a Bible study as a leader of the Impact Movement. Once he graduated from BSU, Devin was hired as a Youth Minister of Zion Church in Largo, Maryland. Now, as Creative Communications Pastor of Zion Church and CEO of Disciples Thru Media, Devin has found a way to make a difference in this world. Every week he ministers to hundreds of teenagers in the D.C. metropolitan area, giving them the message that hope and purpose can only be found in a relationship with Jesus Christ. Devin and his wife,, Lenneil Turner, reside in Upper Marlboro, MD with their two sons, Justus and Jairus. 3

8 Responsive Reading Empower Our Children Leader: Children are precious gifts from God and we love them. Let us remind ourselves that it takes a whole village to raise a child to show compassion, competence, and character. Congregation: We celebrate their gifts and strengths. We pray for them. Lord, help us to hear the dreams and concerns of children, and to never give up on them. Leader: We thank you for David, who found favor with you and was anointed king in his youth. We also thank you for Josiah who became king at eight years of age, and whose reign was pleasing to you. Congregation: We thank you for the young maiden who instructed Naaman to seek the prophet. We also thank you for Miriam, who led with her brother Moses; for Jeremiah, who was called from his mother s womb; and for Jesus, who confounded the chief priests and scribes at the age of twelve. Leader: We remember all of those who came before us, the shoulders upon which we today stand. Those for whom Hope unborn had died. So many lives were given and taken to make room and opportunity for us here today. Congregation: In this the twenty-first century, many of our children are still in desperate need. Many are born into poverty, die at the hand of violence, neglect, and abuse. Some suffer daily from HIV, drugs, and alcohol. Leader: O Lord, rescue and deliver them all. Help them to become beacons of hope and agents of change in America and in the world, not waiting for tomorrow but today! Congregation: As the lives of our children and youth are channeled to academics, help them find the time to read and to understand your commandments, and to know and to love Jesus Christ. Leader: O Lord, position significant and caring adults in their lives to guide them to discover the unique potential which you have placed within them. Empower them to know your peace, and guide them to lead their peers. Congregation: Shield them from all hurt, harm, and danger. Shelter them from abuse, low selfesteem, negativity, and shame. Leader: And as they stand before you O God help them to obey their parents. Give them important roles to play in the home, church, school, and community. Congregation: Give every family, church, and community the assets and the will to ensure the positive development of our children. All: Our hope for the future resides in our children and their relationship with you O God. We pray that they grow and thrive according to your will. Amen 8

9 Celebration of Giving Litany MINISTER: It is now time for us to share in giving. Why do we give? CONGREGATION: We give because all we have comes from God. According to Deuteronomy 8:18, it is God who gives us the power to get wealth. MINISTER: Why do we give? CONGREGATION: We give because God commands us. Malachi 3:10 states that we are to bring the full tithe into God s storehouse. MINISTER: Why do we give? CONGREGATION: We give because God said in Luke 6:38, to give and He would give back to us a more abundant blessing. MINISTER: Why do we give? CONGREGATION: We give because 2 Corinthians 9:7 states that God loves a cheerful giver. ALL: Thank you Lord, for the privilege of giving. We are excited about paying the tithe and giving the offering. We know that you are faithful to your promises. Therefore, we trust you in faith to do what you have said. AMEN! 9

11 Ministry Focus Family We, the church family, seek to enhance the spiritual growth of our families, children, adults, and seniors through a commitment to supportive and nurturing ministries and activities which are Christ centered but that minister to the whole person, spirit, mind and body. Proverbs 22:6 Strong Christian families are essential to the furthering of the gospel. Children are our gifts from God, and we have the responsibility to enrich their lives with the proper Christian ethics. Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land of the Lord your God is giving you. (Exodus 20:12) Show respect for the elderly. (James 2:13) Listen my son, to your father s instruction and do not forsake your mother s teachings. (Proverbs 1:18) A wise man brings joy to his family, but a foolish man despises his mother. (Proverbs 15:20) Early and continually inviting our children to accept the ways of Christ will help them not only in their childhood years but remain a guiding force during their adulthood. Individual families and the church have the responsibility to provide social activities and programs for our youth and young adults. We cannot afford to leave our children as daily targets of the unhealthy, worldly forces. We must lead them to Christ at an early age. However, it is important for us to exemplify the ideals of Christianity in our daily lives. 24 FROM THE EVANGELISM MINISTRY During the next few weeks the Evangelism Ministry will present a series on Questions and Objections. [The primary reference is The Evidence Bible, Bridge-Logos, Gainesville, Florida, Publisher.] This series will consist of questions the evangelist could encounter while witnessing. Some of the questions we will be exploring are: Why are there so many denominations? Why does God allow evil? Will people who have never heard about Jesus go to hell? Today s question is: Why are there so many denominations? In the early 1500s, a German monk named Martin Luther was so conscious of his sins that he spent up to six hours in the confessional. Through study of the Scriptures he found that salvation didn t come through anything he did, but simply through trusting in the finished work of the cross of Jesus Christ. He listed the contradictions between what the Scriptures said and what his church taught, and nailed his 95 Theses, to the church door in Wittenberg, Germany. Martin Luther became the first to protest against the Roman church, and thus he became the father of the Protestant church. Since that split, there have been many disagreements about how much water one should baptize with, how to sing what and why, who should govern who, etc., causing thousands of splinter groups. Many of these groups are convinced that they alone are right. These have become known as Protestant denominations. Despite the confusion, these churches subscribe to certain foundational beliefs such as the deity, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Bible says, the foundation of God stands sure, having this seal, The Lord knows them that are his (2 Timothy 2:19). Thomas Jefferson once wrote of a preacher, Richard Mote, who exclaimed aloud to his congregation that he did not believe there was a Quaker, Presbyterian, Methodist, or Baptist in heaven, having paused to give his hearers time to stare and to wonder. He added that, in heaven, God knew no distinctions. The Evangelism Ministry Team Meetings are open to all, and the next meeting will be June 21,

25 FROM THE EVANGELISM MINISTRY The Evangelism Ministry is providing Gospel tracts to the congregation. We ask that you read them for yourselves, give them to others, and also leave them in various places where others will see them. A list of ideal places to leave Gospel tracts is included as an insert to your bulletin. This is your opportunity to be a witness for Christ and share the Gospel. The tracts are available at the entrance to the sanctuary and in the lobby of the LGFLC. Some Ideas Where to Leave Tracts: At pay phones In shopping carts In clothes pockets in stores In letters to loved ones With a generous tip On seats in restaurant lobbies With fast-food employees, cashiers, flight attendants, cab drivers, and gas station workers In restrooms At rest areas On ATM machines and bank counters In envelopes with bill payments In elevators On hotel dressers for the maid On ice machines On newspaper racks In waiting rooms of doctors' offices and hospitals On seats at airports, subways, and bus stations In plane seat pockets Inside magazines In cabs In Laundromats 25
