1 Prelude Brief Order of Confession and Forgiveness 10:00 WORSHIP TRANSFIGURATION SUNDAY February 26, 2017 Opening Hymn We Give Thee But Thine Own RED 435 Greeting and Response: P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you. P: Holy is the Lord, the Almighty. C: He was, he is, and he is to come. P: He is worthy of glory and honor and power. C: He created all things. By his will they came to be. P: Worthy is Christ, the Lamb who was slain; C: worthy to take the scroll and break its seals. P: By his blood he purchased for God C: people of every race and tongue, of every folk and nation. P: Christ made of them a kingdom C: and priests to serve our God. P: And they shall reign on earth forever. C: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. Prayer of the Day Lord God, heavenly Father, you taught us not to put our trust in ourselves. Grant that trusting you we may be defended against all adversity; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Hymn of Praise Open The Eyes of My Heart Lord Insert First Reading: Exodus 24:8-18 And Moses took the blood and threw it on the people and said, Behold the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you in accordance with all these words. Then Moses and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel went up, and they saw the God of Israel. There was under his feet as it were a pavement of sapphire stone, like the very heaven for clearness. And he did not lay his hand on the chief men of the people of Israel; they beheld God, and ate and drank. The LORD said to Moses, Come up to me on the mountain and wait there, that I may give you the tablets of stone, with the law and the commandment, which I have written for their instruction. So Moses rose with his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up into the mountain of God. And he said to the elders, Wait here for us until we return to you. And behold, Aaron and Hur are with you. Whoever has a dispute, let him go to them. Then Moses went up on the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain. The glory of the LORD dwelt on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days. And on the seventh day he called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud. Now the appearance of the glory of the LORD was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel. Moses entered the cloud and went up on the mountain. And Moses was on the mountain forty days and forty nights. Second Reading: 2 Peter 1:16-21 For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased, we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain. And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. Verse God s Word Is Our Great Heritage LBW 239 Gospel: Matthew 17:1-9 And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. And Peter said to Jesus, Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah. He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him. When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, Rise, and have no fear. And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only. And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, Tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man is raised from the dead. 4 Participants of "The Broken Way" Wednesday evening Bible Study would like to extend a challenge to the Living Word congregation. The words of Christ from the book of Luke 14:12-14 "...When you give a dinner or a supper, do not ask your friends, your brothers, your relatives, nor rich neighbors, lest they also invite you back, and you be repaid. But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind. And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you; for you shall be repaid at the resurrection of the just." We are asking members of Living Word to pick up (located at the back of the church) an invitation in a ziplock bag with a paper plate in it. Then fill the plate with cookies or bars/treats and invite an unchurched neighbor or acquaintance to the Lenten Services which begin March 1st on Ash Wednesday. The invitation includes a list of dates and times including supper. Remember to pray for those you give an invitation to. Please plan to take part in this important outreach to the unchurched in our communities. April Servant Team will meet on Sunday, March 19th during Coffee Fellowship at 9:00. Servant teams help with ushering, greeting, furnish and/or serve treats for coffee fellowship, help with weddings if scheduled during the month and help and/or furnish for funerals that maybe during the month. If every member, who is able, volunteers for at least one area of service during their month, the work of the church will easily be accomplished throughout the year. Your help is greatly appreciated. Please prayerfully consider being co-chairman for your Servant team. 5 Living Word Women s organization has chosen as one of their Mission Projects during January through April, the St. Francis House in Sioux Falls. We will be collecting needed items and delivering them to St. Francis House. All members of the congregation are invited to help by donating much needed items. Donations may be placed in the baskets in the Fellowship Hall. St. Francis House is an ecumenical emergency shelter and transitional housing program for the homeless offering hospitality, fellowship and support to those in need. They require all guests to follow strict guidelines including a zero tolerance policy on drugs and alcohol. Guests must attend two self-improvement classes each week, hold or apply for a job, attend all evening meals, uphold household chores and place money into savings. Their program focuses on a hand-up rather than a hand-out approach and serves people of all ages from infants to the elderly. They serve tired travelers as well as those coming from hospitals, treatment centers and prisons and anyone looking for a chance to start over. St. Francis House depends entirely on private donations and grants for its operating funds and their Mission Statement is An Ecumenical Ministry, Moving People from Homelessness to Hope!
