1 Reading Overview The festival we celebrate this weekend, The Transfiguration of Our Lord, marks the end of the Epiphany season and the transition to the Lenten season. The Old Testament lesson from Exodus 24 tells the story of God renewing his covenant with the Children of Israel by the sprinkling of blood of sacrificed animals and by meeting with their leaders and sharing a meal. This is followed by Moses going up the mountaintop to receive the terms of God s covenant from God himself. The New Testament lesson from 2 Peter contains Peter s testimony regarding the impact that witnessing Jesus transfiguration had on his life and ministry. He writes: we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty (2 Peter 1:16). The Gospel lesson today is Matthew s account of Jesus transfiguration. Ringing throughout the ages is the voice of the Father regarding his beloved Son: Listen to him (Matthew 17:5b). 4 Confession and Absolution L Peter, James, and John went up on the side of a mountain with Jesus and experienced glory. But then Peter wanted to stay and get comfortable, saying: It s good for us to be here. We are also often tempted to keep the experience of the Divine to ourselves, to enjoy the company of the saints instead of going back down the mountain to continue the work of the Kingdom of God. God knows this temptation of our hearts, so let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. C God of glory and light, forgive us when we are complacent and comfortable. Keep calling us down from your holy mountain to work for justice and peace. Keep calling us to live as your disciples. Keep reminding us to listen to your Son. L Whether we hear a voice from the heavens or a still small voice in our hearts, listen carefully for the love of God. Believe and accept God s love and live in God s freedom. Your sins are forgiven. Then Moses and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel went up, and they saw the God of Israel. There was under his feet as it were a pavement of sapphire stone, like the very heaven for clearness. And he did not lay his hand on the chief men of the people of Israel; they beheld God, and ate and drank. The Lord said to Moses, Come up to me on the mountain and wait there, that I may give you the tablets of stone, with the law and the commandment, which I have written for their instruction. So Moses rose with his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up into the mountain of God. And he said to the elders, Wait here for us until we return to you. And behold, Aaron and Hur are with you. Whoever has a dispute, let him go to them. Then Moses went up on the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain. The glory of the Lord dwelt on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days. And on the seventh day he called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud. Now the appearance of the glory of the Lord was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel. Moses entered the cloud and went up on the mountain. 6 Second Lesson 2 Peter 1:16 21 (ESV) For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased, we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain. And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation. 13 2017 Lent and Holy Week Schedule Our Wednesday midweek Lenten services this year will focus on God s grace as it comes to us through Confession and Absolution, Holy Baptism, and Holy Communion. In this 500th anniversary year of the Lutheran Reformation it seems appropriate to focus our attention on three of the six chief parts identified by Martin Luther in his catechisms. Shawnee Campus June Mission Campus July Hospice Care Presentation Do you have questions about hospice care, who is eligible, how it is paid for, and what it entails? On Friday, March 10, at 2pm Trinity will offer an opportunity to learn more about this caring service. Most everyone has had a friend or loved one who has used hospice care or is in need of it. The community is invited to join us at this informative presentation and, as always, there is no cost. The presentation will be by speakers from Compassionate Care Hospice. Call Committee Update Following the Congregational Assembly approval in January, the Call Committee began looking at students from the Concordia University System, and things have been moving very quickly ever since. Last Monday, February 20, the Call Committee interviewed two DCE students preparing for their internship, to see if they might be a fit for Trinity.
