2 Page 2 If there was one word I would use to describe the month of November, it would be transi on. The fields around us have transi oned from being green with growing crops to having been harvested and plowed up, ready for winter. Our yards and gardens have transi oned from blooming flowers and shrubs to leafless s cks and bedded down ground, ready for winter. In our homes we have transi oned from air condi oners to furnaces, from light jackets and flip-flops to heavy coats and boots, ready for winter. Not only are we transi oning from summer/autumn to winter in our fields, homes and life but we are also making a transi on from our summer/autumn worship to our winter worship as well. This transi on begins at the start of November as we remembering the lives of the saints on All aints unday, November 2. As Chris anity spread throughout Europe, fall became a me to remember those who had died in Christ. On All aints unday, we remember two groups of saints. We remember all the saints in the church whose lives have and con nue to shape us; and we remember those saints at Opdal and Our avior s who have died in the past year, and now celebrate with Christ in the feast that has no end. Our transi on con nues with the celebra on of Christ the King unday, November 23 - the last day of the church year. There are several themes to this day as we celebrate Christ as King: How the kingship of Christ is vastly different from any earthly kingship. How Christ s kingship is here in part but won t be fully here un l he comes at the end of me. Looking to Christ s coming at the end of me and the kingdom he will establish. Our transi on to winter worship is complete as we celebrate the first unday in Advent, Nov. 30th. With Advent our church s year begins again. Through the words of the prophets, we hear the themes of Advent. Prepara on in Isaiah 40: Every valley li ed, every mountain made low, uneven level and rough places plane. Promise from Isaiah 11: The earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord as waters cover the sea. Hope from Micah 4: words into plowshares, spears into pruning hooks, na ons shall learn war no more. Fulfillment from Isaiah 7: A young woman will bear a son and shall name him Emmanuel. Just as plowed fields, furnaces turned on, ge ng winter coats out of storage are transi ons that z prepare you for winter, may these worship transi ons help you to prepare to celebrate the high point of our winter worship: Unto you has been born a avior, Christ the Lord. Pastor Dale...To the Family of Romona Bjorndal A memorial service will be held on aturday, November 15, 2:00 pm, at Our avior s; visitation on Friday, November 14, 5:00-7:00 also at O
3 Page 3 Remembering the aints During the prayers of the church in the last prayer petition, Pastor Dale has been mentioning the names of men and woman who s commemoration day is that coming week. As Christians we have a rich heritage of men and woman of faith and it is important for us to know some of their stories. Here is a list of those saints we will be remembering in the month of November: November 3: Martin de Porres - renewer of society: The son of a panish night and freed back slave Martin became a law brother in the Order of Preachers - Dominicans. His work included founding an orphanage, a hospital and clinic. He is recognized as an advocate for Christian charity and interracial justice. November 7: John Heyer ; Bartholomaeus Ziegenbalg ; and Ludwig Nommensen -1918; missionaries. Heyer was the first missionary sent out by American Lutherans. He worked in the Andhra region of India. Ziegenbalg was a missionary to the Tamils of Tranquebar on the southeast coast of India. The Tamil Evangelical Lutheran Church traces it s roots to his work. Nommensen served as a missionary in umatra among the Batak people. November 11: Martin, Bishop of Tours and oren Kierkegaard, teacher Martin was serving in the army when a beggar approached him for aid. Martin gave half his cloak to him and later understood that he had seen the presence of Christ in that beggar. Upon release from the army we began preaching and settled outside the city of Tours he was made bishop. In the middle ages his grave site was one of the most popular sites that pilgrims traveled to. Kierkegaard was a 19 th century Danish theologian who was the founder of modern existentialism. Kierkegaard was critical of the established church of his day- its complacency, its tendency to intellectualize faith and its desire to be accepted by polite society. November 17: Elizabeth of Hungry, renewer of society Married to a duke she gave of her wealth for relief to the poor and sick. he founded hospitals, cared for orphans and used royal food to feed the hungry. Upon her husbands death she joined a Franciscan order to contribute her charitable work. November 23: Clement, Bishop of Rome 100 and Miguel Agustin Pro, renewer of society Clement is one of the Apostolic Father s. He did not know Jesus but he knew the apostles. Clement was the 3 rd bishop of Rome and remembered for a letter he wrote to the Corinthian congregation. Pro grew up in Mexico at a time when revolutionaries accused the church of siding with the rich. As a priest serving during anticlericalism, much of his ministry was carried out in private settings in which he worked on behalf of the poor and homeless. November 24: Justus Falckner : Jehu Jones and William Passavant -1894: Pastors in North America. Falckner was the first Lutheran ordained in North American and served congregations in New York and New Jersey. His catechism was the first Lutheran book published in North America. Jones was the first African-American pastor in the Lutheran church. He worked in Philadelphia where he formed the first African American Lutheran congregation. Passavant created and nurtured a new level of organized social ministry in western Pennsylvania that became the seed for the system of social services that is now known as Lutheran ocial ervices in America. November 25: Isaac Watts, hymn writer Watts family were nonconformists, people who thought the church of England had not carried out enough reforms. As a youth Watts complained to his father about the quality of hymnody. That was the start of his hymn writing career. He wrote about six hundred hymns, many in a two-year period beginning when he was twenty. When criticized for writing hymns not taken from scripture, he responded that if we can pray prayers that not from scripture but written by us, then surely we can sing hymns that we have made up ourselves. Ten of his hymns are in the ELW. November 30: Andrew, Apostle. Andrew was the first of the twelve. As part of his calling to bring others to Jesus, he brought his brother Peter; with Philip he leads a number of Greeks to speak with Jesus and it is Andrew who shows Jesus a boy with five loaves and two fish. John Chrysostom called Andrew the Peter before Peter. Andrew is said to have been martyred at Patras in ancient Greece on an X-shaped cross. Andrew is the patron saint of cotland and the cross of t. Andrew (an X) in the English Flag represents cotland.

6 Page 6 pecial Free Will Offerings This Month November 2: Food for Kidz November 9: Noisy Can Offering Compassion Child ponsorship A New Diet After starting a new diet, I altered my drive to work to avoid passing my favorite bakery. I accidentally drove by the bakery this morning and as I approached, there in the window were a host of goodies. I felt this was no accident, so I prayed... "Lord, it's up to you, if you want me to have any of those delicious goodies, create a parking place for me directly in front of the bakery." And sure enough, on the eighth time around the block, there it was! God is so Good! The Heating eason Now that the heating season is upon us, we are seeking to conserve energy as best we can. To do this, when the building is not in use, all thermostats are turned down to 60. We will be turning them back up to 68 when we are using that part of the building. As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them. - John F. Kennedy -
7 Page 7 Bu h n C is. 1 C n i n 2:16 The Puritans wisely sought to connect all of life to is source in God, bringing the two worlds together rather than dividing them into sacred and secular. They had a saying, God loveth adverbs; and cares now how good, but how well. Adverbs describe verbs our words of action and activity. The proverb implies that God cares more about the spirit in which we live than the concrete results. Pleasing God doesn t mean that we must busy ourselves with a new set of spiritual activities. As the Puritans said, whether cleaning house or preaching sermons, shoeing horses or translating the Bible, any human activity may constitute an offering to God. We spend much time immersed in the mundane. But we have the mind of Christ, Paul reminds us (1 Corinthians 2:16). That truth is to guide everything we do. Caring for an elderly parent. Cleaning up after a child. itting on a porch with a neighbor. Responding to a customer s complaint. Filling out patient charts at a nurses station. itting in traffic. awing lumber. Reporting tips. hopping for groceries. We need faith and the mind of the Lord Jesus to recognize something of lasting value even in our most ordinary tasks. - by Philip Yancey November 2014 UN MON TUE WED THU FRI AT 1 2 All aints unday 3 O unday chool 9:15 O Choir Rehearsal 10:00 O Worship :30 pm 9th Gr.
