3 Prayers, promises and foresight QUESTIONS JOHN WESLEY ASKED HIMSELF EVERY DAY Am I consciously or unconsciously creating the impression that I m better than I really am? Am I a hypocrite? Am I honest in all my acts and words, or do I exaggerate? Do I confidentially pass on to another what was told to me in confidence? Can I be trusted? Am I a slave to dress, friends, work, or habits? Am I self-conscious, self-pitying, or self-justifying? Did the Bible live in me today? Do I give it time to speak to me each day? Am I enjoying prayer? When did I last speak to someone about my faith? Do I pray about the money I spend? Do I get to bed on time, and get up on time? Do I disobey God in anything? Do I insist upon doing something about which my conscience is uneasy? Am I defeated in a part of my life? Am I jealous, impure, critical, irritable, touchy or distrustful? How do I spend my spare time? Am I proud? Do I thank God that I am not as other people, especially not the Pharisees who despised the publican? Is there anyone whom I fear, dislike, disown, criticise, hold resentment toward, or disregard? If so, what am I doing about it? Do I grumble or complain constantly? Is Christ real to me?

We have neglected your commands and have ignored your call for justice. We have been guided by self-interest and lived in spiritual poverty. Forgive us. We remember your promises to fill the hungry with good things, to redeem the land by your mighty hand and to restore peace. Father God, help us always to proclaim your justice and mercy with humility, so that, by the power of your Spirit, we can rid the world of the sin of extreme poverty. As part of your global church, we stand with millions who praise and worship you. May our words and deeds declare your perfect goodness, love and righteousness to both the powerful and the powerless so that your Kingdom may come on earth as it is in heaven. Amen

5 A Benediction May there be peace within. May you trust your highest power that you are exactly where you are meant to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith. May you use those gifts that you have received and pass on the love that has been given to you. May you be content knowing you are a child of God. Let this presence settle into our bones, and allow your soul freedom to sing, dance, praise and love. It is there for each and every one of you. 6 A DAILY MORNING PRAYER Dear Heavenly Father, I thank you for this day. I thank you for my being able to awake once again, to see, and to hear this morning. I m blessed because you are a forgiving God and an understanding God. You have done so much for me and you continue to bless me. Please forgive me every day for anything I have done, said or thought that was not pleasing to you, and I ask now for your forgiveness. Please keep me safe from all danger and harm. Help me to start this day with a new attitude and plenty of gratitude. Let me make the best of each and every day to clear my mind so that I can hear from You. Please broaden my mind that I can accept all things. Let me not whine and whimper over things I have no control over. Let me continue to see sin through your eyes and acknowledge it as evil. And when I sin, let me repent, and confess with my mouth my wrongdoing, and receive your forgiveness. And when this world closes in on me, let me remember the example of Jesus to slip away and find a quiet place to pray. It is the best response when I m pushed beyond my limits. Continue to use me to do your will. Continue to bless me that I may be a blessing to others. Keep me strong that I may help the weak. Keep me uplifted that I may have words of encouragement for others. I pray for those who are lost and can t find their way. I pray for those who are misjudged and misunderstood. I pray for those who don t know you intimately. I pray for those who don t believe, and I thank you that you are in my heart and that I do believe and have true faith in you. I believe that you change people and you can change all things. I pray for all my sisters and brothers, and for each and every family member in their households. I pray for peace, love, and joy in their homes that they are out of debt and all their needs are met. I pray that every eye that reads this knows there is no problem, circumstance, or situation greater than you. Every battle is in your hands for you to fight. I pray that these words be received into the hearts of every eye that sees them and every mouth that confesses them willingly. This is my prayer... and I pray in the name of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Saviour, Amen Human beings Flawed, tragic, ridiculous, wonderful, effervescent, hopeful, devastating, gifted, cruel, surprising. With the potential to create massive extremes God s instruments on earth Only way we can be of any use is to open our hearts and minds to HIM

May God bless you with anger at injustice, oppression, and exploitation of people, so that you may work for justice, freedom and peace. May God bless you with tears to shed for those who suffer from pain, rejection, starvation and war, so that you may reach out your hand to comfort them and to turn their pain into joy. And may God bless you with enough foolishness to believe that you can make a difference in this world, so that you can do what others claim cannot be done.
