Good Friday The Passion of our Lord Rector: Administrator: Ray David Glenn Gillian Fernie Worship & Media Pastor: Associate Pastor Len Finn Bryan Hunt Website: Office: Facebook: facebook.com/stgeorgesonline YouTube: youtube.com/stgeorgeschurch Welcome to St. George s. For those of you who have not been to one of our services we hope this booklet helps you feel more comfortable. We know new experiences can be a bit awkward so please follow along with us in this booklet or you can simply copy your neighbour. There are also brief explanations of why we do what we do on each page. A Few Tips 1. Bold lettering directs the community to say something in unison. Feel free to join in or just listen to the words being spoken. 2. Liturgy may be new for you. If so, think of it like joining in on someone else s family dinner. Their food, conversation, traditions, and quirks may seem odd at first. But after joining them the second or third time you may feel more comfortable with the way they do family dinner. We hope you will feel more at ease as you continue to join us. 3. You can download a digital copy of this booklet and follow along on your digital device. Follow us on ftw A Hearing Loop System is installed. Switch your hearing Aid to `T` setting. Est Deep roots. Growing everyday.
NEW TO OUR CHURCH? If you are new to our church, check out the newcomers booklets in the rack below the seat in front of you. This will help you get a better feel for who we are and how you can connect with our church. Feel free to take the booklet home with you to read at your own leisure. CHILDCARE We will have a children s program (Ages 3-8), as well as a full nursery (ages 0-3) during the service. THE CHURCH Church is not something that we do every Sunday, it is instead the people of God. It is a living entity made up of Christians with Jesus at its head (Eph 4:11-16). The church building is not the church you and I are the church. We gather together as the church on Sunday mornings to worship together, be taught by the scriptures, and to encourage one another in authentic community. AUTOPILOT Take a moment and think about what you are singing. It is all too easy to turn on autopilot and just sing empty words. But God wants our hearts. Let the truth of the gospel, the truth of God s complete love and acceptance for you in Christ, move your heart to sing. Silent Processional Silence is kept as the people gather. Prayer for the Children At this point in the service we invite the children to come forward to be prayed over before they go out to Sunday School. If you are a visitor, or if your kids are shy, feel free to keep your kids with you instead of sending them forward. Your kids can join the rest of the children as they leave after the prayer is finished. Collect of the Day Almighty God, we ask you to look with mercy on this your family for whom our Lord Jesus Christ was willing to be betrayed and to be given over to the hands of sinners and to suffer death on the cross: who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Please be seated The Announcement of the Passion Who Is This, A Man of Sorrows Who is this, a man of sorrows Walking sadly life s hard way, Homeless, weary, sighing, weeping Over sin and Satan s sway? Tis our God, our glorious Saviour, Who above the starry sky Now for us a place prepareth, Where no tear can dim the eye. Scripture: Matthew 26: 1-5 Read by Maggie Wilson
How Deep the Father s Love For Us How deep the Father's love for us How vast beyond all measure That He should give His only Son To make a wretch His treasure How great the pain of searing loss The Father turns His face away As wounds which mar the Chosen One Bring many sons to glory Behold the man upon a cross My sin upon His shoulders Ashamed I hear my mocking voice Call out among the scoffers It was my sin that held Him there Until it was accomplished His dying breath has brought me life I know that it is finished Scripture: Matthew 26: 6-13 Read by Lynne Duke Silence The Betrayal Scripture: Matthew 26: Read by Julia Selby WORSHIP EXPLAINED Worship is so much more than just singing songs about God. It is our whole being - heart, mind, and body responding in adoration and thanksgiving to who God is and what He has done. When we enter into this kind of worship, God often makes us acutely aware of his presence with us, and this revives and stirs our souls. Join into the eternal song this morning and worship the Glorious God for whom you were created. Let Him stir your soul. FOOD FOR THOUGHT In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 1 John 4:10 "The marvel of heaven and earth, of time and eternity, is the atoning death of Jesus Christ. This is the mystery that brings more glory to God than all creation." Charles Spurgeon His Wounds Have Paid My Ransom I will not boast in anything No gifts, no power, no wisdom But I will boast in Jesus Christ His death and resurrection Why should I gain from His reward I cannot give an answer But this I know with all my heart His wounds have paid my ransom
FOOD FOR THOUGHT He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. 1 Peter 2:24 "No one ever deserved suffering less, yet received so much... no one has ever had a greater right to retaliate, but used it less...no one has ever borne so much injustice with so little vengeance." John Piper Scripture: Matthew 26: Read by Robin Lynne Buchanan The Last Supper Here is Love, Vast as the Ocean (Please Stand) 1. Here is love, vast as the ocean, Loving kindness as the flood, When the Prince of Life, our Ransom Shed for us His precious blood Who His love will not remember? Who can cease to sing His praise? He can never be forgotten Throughout Heav'n's eternal days. 2. On the mount of crucifixion Fountains opened deep and wide Through the floodgates of God's mercy Flowed a vast and gracious tide Grace and love, like mighty rivers Poured incessant from above And Heav'n's peace and perfect justice Kissed a guilty world in love 3. So let me all thy love accepting Love thee ever all my days And let me seek thy kingdom only And my life be to thy praise Thou alone shall be my glory Nothing of this world I seek Thou has cleansed and sanctified me Thou Thyself hast set me free Please be seated Scripture: Matthew 26: Read by Scott Hunt
Amazing Grace 1. Amazing grace! How sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found; Was blind, but now I see. 2. Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed! FOOD FOR THOUGHT But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. Ephesians 2:13 Before we can begin to see the cross as something done for us, we have to see it as something done by us. John Stott Scripture: Matthew 26: Read by Scott Hunt Through Many Dangers 3. Through many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come; Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home. 4. When we ve been there ten thousand years, Bright shining as the sun, We ve no less days to sing God s praise Than when we d first begun. The Passion of Christ Scripture: Matthew 26: Read by Vicky Wilson All For Love (Gethsemane) (Please Stand) The weight of the promise held in Your heart. My sinful condition kept us apart, In the Garden of Gethsemane, Where mercy met Your majesty.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5:21 A cheap Christianity, without a cross, will prove in the end a useless Christianity, without a crown. J.C. Ryle The call of redemption, Father to Son, With tears of deep sorrow, Your will be done. In the Garden of Gethsemane, Where mercy met Your majesty. All for love, all for love, Perfect Saviour, in holy surrender All for love, all for love, As darkness descended, You never relented. As You gave Your Spirit, grace now complete, Your wounds now our healing, Your pain now our peace. On the holy cross of Calvary, My failure met eternity, eternity. All for love, all for love, You were forsaken, my heart awakened. It is finished, death undone, Now forever, praise the Son. There is no greater name than this, No greater name than this, Oh, the name of Jesus. There is no higher love than this, No higher love than this, Oh, the love of Jesus. Please be seated The Arrest Scripture: Matthew 26: Read by Catherine Neal Silence. The Trial Scripture: Matthew 26: Read by Shannon Hadaya
Man of Sorrows (Please Stand) 1. Man of Sorrows! what a name For the Son of God, who came Ruined sinners to reclaim. Hallelujah! What a Savior! 2. Bearing shame and scoffing rude, In my place condemned He stood; Sealed my pardon with His blood. Hallelujah! What a Savior! 3. Guilty, vile, and helpless we; Spotless Lamb of God was He; Full atonement! can it be? Hallelujah! What a Savior! 4. Lifted up was He to die; It is finished! was His cry; Now in Heav n exalted high. Hallelujah! What a Savior! FOOD FOR THOUGHT For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:6-8 Learn to know Christ and him crucified. Learn to sing to him, and say, "Lord Jesus, you are my righteousness, I am your sin. You have taken upon yourself what is mine and given me what is yours. You have become what you were not so that I might become what I was not. Martin Luther 5. When He comes, our glorious King, All His ransomed home to bring, Then anew His song we ll sing: Hallelujah! What a Savior! Please be seated The Denial Scripture: Matthew 26: Read by Bill Horricks When I Survey the Wondrous Cross 1. When I survey the wondrous cross On which the Prince of Glory died My richest gain I count but loss And pour contempt on all my pride 2. Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast Save in the death of Christ, my God All the vain things that charm me most I sacrifice them to his blood
PRAETORIUM Praetorium means common hall or judgment hall in Latin. Here it refers to the palace of Pontius Pilate, the Roman prefect of Judea. FOOD FOR THOUGHT God, who needs nothing, loves into existence wholly superfluous creatures in order that He may love and perfect them. He creates the universe, already foreseeing the buzzing cloud of flies about the cross, the flayed back pressed against the uneven stake, the nails driven through the mesial nerves, the repeated incipient suffocation as the body droops, the repeated torture of back and arms as it is time after time, for breath's sake, hitched up. If I may dare the biological image, God is a "host" who deliberately creates His own parasites; causes us to be that we may exploit and "take advantage of" Him. Herein is love. This is the diagram of Love Himself, the inventor of all loves. C.S. Lewis The Death of Jesus, The Praetorium Scripture: Matthew 27: 1-23 Read by Noah Hicks See From His Head 3. See from His head, His hands, His feet Sorrow and love flow mingled down Did e'er such love and sorrow meet Or thorns compose so rich a crown? 4. Were the whole realm of nature mine That were a present far too small Love so amazing, so divine Demands my soul, my life, my all The Scourging and the Crucifixion Scripture: Matthew 27: Read by David Hicks Nothing but the Blood (Please Stand) What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus; What can make me whole again? Nothing but the blood of Jesus. Oh! precious is the flow That makes me white as snow; No other fount I know, Nothing but the blood of Jesus. For my pardon, this I see, Nothing but the blood of Jesus; For my cleansing this my plea, Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
Nothing can for sin atone, Nothing but the blood of Jesus; Naught of good that I have done, Nothing but the blood of Jesus. This is all my hope and peace, Nothing but the blood of Jesus; This is all my righteousness, Nothing but the blood of Jesus. Please be seated Scripture: Matthew 27: Read by Ruth Forbes Who is this, behold Who is this - behold him shedding Drops of blood upon the ground? Who is this- despised, rejected, Mocked, insulted, beaten, bound? Tis our God, who gifts and graces On his church now poureth down; Who shall smite in righteous judgment All his foes beneath his throne. RESOURCES FOR YOUR WEEK Every week, we post indepth articles on our website to resource your week with content that connects Christ to all areas of life. Go to our website or follow us on facebook to get access. SMALL GROUPS God intends for us to experience life together, and that s why at St. George s, we encourage you to get into a small group. A small group is a gathering of three or more people who meet regularly in a home. They hang out, study the Bible, and pray together. No matter where you are in life, it is important to have a group of people you get together with on a regular basis to study God s Word and have fun! If you are interested in joining a small group, please contact our small group coordinator Joe Biggar smallgroups@ stgeorgesonline.com or phone the church office Scripture: Matthew 27: Read by Jill Hicks Who is this that Hangeth Dying? Who is this that hangeth dying, While the rude world scoffs and scorns; Numbered with the malefactors, Torn with nails, and crowned with thorns? Tis the God who ever liveth Mid the shining ones on high! In the glorious golden city Reigning everlastingly!
DERELICTION Definition: the condition of being no longer cared for. SERMON Some view the sermon as a way to get principles for right living. Others see it as a chance to take a nap. In reality, as we open the Scripture we corporately encounter Christ. Therefore, as you listen, pray to be open to the Spirit s leading, exhortation, encouragement, and healing. You can listen to all of our sermons online on our website. FOOD FOR THOUGHT Life is wasted if we do not grasp the glory of the cross, cherish it for the treasure that it is, and cleave to it as the highest price of every pleasure and the deepest comfort in every pain. What was once foolishness to us a crucified God must become our wisdom and our power and our only boast in this world. John Piper OFFERTORY During our offertory song we will pass a plate around the room and members of our congregation may give a financial gift. If you are a visitor, please do not feel compelled to give. At St. George`s, we believe that our money is really God`s and not our own, and giving back to him is an act of worship. This act of worship helps our church pay the day-today costs of our ministries, and outreaches. The Dereliction and Death of Jesus Scripture: Matthew 27: Read by Tim Wilson Silence Musical Reflection O Sacred Head, Now Wounded Shirantha Beddage The Burial of Jesus Scripture: Matthew 27: Read by Garth Hunt Silence The Homily Ray David Glenn The Offertory O Praise the Name (Anástasis) (Please Stand) I cast my mind to Calvary, where Jesus bled and died for me. I see His wounds, His hands, His feet, my Saviour on that cursed tree. His body bound and drenched in tears, they laid Him down in Joseph's tomb. The entrance sealed by heavy stone, Messiah still and all alone.
O praise the name of the Lord our God, O praise His name forever more. For endless days we will sing Your praise, Oh Lord, oh Lord our God. And then on the third, at break of dawn, the Son of Heaven rose again. O trampled death where is your sting? The angels roar for Christ the King. He shall return in robes of white, the Blazing Son shall pierce the night. And I will rise among the saints, my gaze transfixed on Jesus' face. Prayers Merciful God, creator of the peoples of the earth and lover of souls, have compassion on all who do not know you as you are revealed in your Son Jesus Christ. Let your gospel be preached with grace and power to those who have not heard it, turn the hearts of those who resist it, and bring home to your fold those who have gone astray; that there may be one flock under one shepherd, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. TAKE ME HOME Please take this booklet home with you and read it at your leisure. It is packed with scripture, thoughtprovoking quotes, and information about what s going on in our church. CONNECTION CARDS Fill out one of our connection cards, available in the appendix of this booklet or from the greeters at the door, to do one or all of the following: join our list, request to meet with a pastor, find a small group, or receive tithing envelopes. FOOD FOR THOUGHT Why did Jesus have to die in order to forgive us? There was a debt to be paid God himself paid it. There was a penalty to be born God himself bore it. Forgiveness is always a form of costly suffering. Tim Keller Closing Song Jesus Paid It All (Please Stand) 1. I hear the Savior say, Thy strength indeed is small; Child of weakness, watch and pray, find in Me thine all in all. Jesus paid it all, all to Him I owe; Sin had left a crimson stain, He washed it white as snow. 2. For nothing good have I, whereby Thy grace to claim; I ll wash my garments white, In the blood of Calvary s Lamb. 3. And now complete in Him, my robe, His righteousness, Close sheltered neath His side, I am divinely blest.
4. Lord, now indeed I find, Thy power, and Thine alone, Can change the leper s spots, and melt the heart of stone. 5. When from my dying bed, my ransomed soul shall rise, Jesus died my soul to save, shall rend the vaulted skies Silent Recessional Our worship service together is now finished, but it is only the beginning. We are called to worship and serve Jesus with our lives 7 days a week. We hope that this meeting together has served to reorient your gaze on to the glory and beauty of Jesus the King Easter Services Easter Sunday Services, April 1 st, 8:30am & 10:15am Announcements Tuesday Prayer Tuesdays at 7pm, Kelvin and RD lead a time of prayer for the church and our community.
