1 The Christian Visitor 200 South Walnut St. P.O. Box 126 Garnett, KS Church Telephone: Fax: Website: Isn t it true that we can become idol inspectors? As we begin examining the Ten Commandments, especially the one that tells us that we should not create any idols, we need to be careful that we are not looking at those around us, judging them for what we perceive to be idols in their lives. What may be an idol for you may not be for them. Think on the following taken from the Peacemaker by Ken Sande. Keep Your Eyes On Your Own Heart "Dear children, keep yourselves from idols." 1 John 5:21 An idol is any desire that has grown into a consuming demand that rules our hearts; it is something we think we must have to be happy, fulfilled, or secure. To put it another way, it is something we love, fear, or trust. This one's really all about you. Keep your eyes on your own paper. Do you remember hearing that in school, maybe right before or during a test? Sometimes it was a little hard, huh? But the teacher wanted you to do your own work and as we grow older, we see the benefit of that perspective. Or do we? Take a discussion of idols, for instance. We could think through that for a moment, but more than likely, the overriding urge would be to consider what someone else idolizes. Yes, well, we all know that Rebecca...or You know, I'm convinced that James... Keep your eyes on your own heart. What is it that is consuming you? What is the thing that you're convinced will make you happy? What is it you are looking for to bring you the security you crave? Look deep within yourself, spend some time on your knees, and ask Christ to reveal those people, places or things you love, fear, or trust more than Him. 2 BUILDING AND GROUNDS MEETING A reminder There will be a Building and Grounds Committee meeting on Wednesday, February 15 at 6:45 p.m. in the Church Library. Any questions please contact Dan Dulin, Chairman at TIME FOR OUR SOLDIERS! Would you be able to join us as we pack soldier boxes on Monday, February 20th? We'll meet in the Fellowship Hall at 10:00 AM. Of course, we'll need something to put in the boxes, too! Homemade cookies are always a big hit. They do appreciate any type of snack item you'd like to bring. They also like anything they can use to help them pass time... puzzle books, playing cards, devotion books, paperback books, as well as baby wipes and air fresheners (the kind you hang in your car), health care items, etc. If you know any of the guys (or even if you don't personally know them), you could write them a note of encouragement that we could include in their box. Thank you for helping us keep contact with those serving us so far away from home. This year the country selected is Malaysia, located in Southeast Asia, just north of the equator. Thailand lies to the north, and Singapore is to the south. The Methodist Church is hosting the worship service for Garnett and the Anderson County area on Friday, March 2nd. It begins at 12:10 and will conclude by 12:50. All churches are welcome to participate. If you would like to help or would like more information, call Marilyn ( ) or ( ). CHRONOLOGICAL BIBLES We have more Chronological Bibles. 6 FCC TREASURER S REPORT Each month I prepare a financial report which is presented to the Finance Committee, then to the FCC General Board. It shows receipts, expenditures, and account balances (a copy of this report is posted on the bulletin board in the church secretary s office). Some may wonder how our church is doing financially, and I am pleased to say better. Year 2010 was an economic down year in our community as well as in our church, and we had to dip into some reserve funds Praise the Lord we were blessed to have some rainy day funds available. During 2011 there was a steady improvement in General Fund receipts from $3513 average per Sunday in the 1 st Quarter, to $4019 average per Sunday in the 4 th Quarter. We really need about $4200 per Sunday to pay the bills (our operating expenses). Your tithes and offerings make a difference in our church, help us grow, and help you grow and receive a blessing as well. These numbers do not include Mission and Benevolent giving. Many designate on their gifts certain missions they want to support, and I send out Mission checks at the end of each month. Last year we averaged $2276 per month in Mission Fund expenditures. It is indeed joyful to see the love and generosity expressed in our congregation. May the Lord continue to bless FCC. Burke Rogers, Treasurer YOUTH CORNER LEGACY YOUTH GROUP 5:00 PM 7:00 PM IN THE SOCIAL HALL February 14 Valentine s Day, aka: the LOVE holiday, or, for the unfortunate men, Honey why won t you talk to me, or for some of us forgetful Oh no, was that today? I have thought in the past why must I be forced to celebrate things like love on certain days. Aren t we supposed to be celebrating LOVE every day? A wiser man than myself helped me understand that every holiday, even ones we don t like, are another opportunity to allow Jesus Love to be seen! This was around the time I learned a valuable lesson of not combining my wife s birthday (2/15) with Valentine s Day! Come on, you would have tried too. Jesus, doing what he did for me and the effort which led to the cross, should inspire me to step up every opportunity I am given to show His love to all who will listen! John 13:34-35 A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. (NIV) Matthew 5:16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. (NIV) So even if we are not big fans of a certain holiday, we should use it to show love in some way because it is an opportunity to be an example of Christ Love to our spouse, our family, or to the whole world! Perhaps you will consider allowing Jesus to inspire your Valentines plans and attitudes for this year and next! In Christ s Love, Chris
