If this sounds familiar, n man e celebrate on January 24th, is someone to hom you should pay careful attention. Saint Francis de Sales as born in AD 1567, in Savoy, France, and lived during turbulent times folloing Protestant Reformation. Francis far had great plans for his son, and so sent him to study in Paris and n Padua, hoping that one day he ould hold a great political office. Despite Francis intuition that God might be calling him to priesthood (something he as aare of for thirteen years), he did as his far ished, and earned a doctorate in la. Upon returning home from his studies, he as offered a political post, but refused it, and instead disclosed to his family that he anted to become a priest. His far as very strongly opposed to idea, and only after significant persuasion did he finally give his blessing. After being ordained a priest, Francis found himself filled ith zeal to bring souls back into Christ s Church. Just over mountains from here he as serving as a Calvinist stronghold, and so he decided to lead a mission to in m back (an idea that many regarded as crazy). For three years, he traveled through Calvinist Sitzerland having doors slammed in his face, and rocks thron at him. He as forced, at times, to sleep in trees so as to avoid olves, faced death threats, and even had his feet frostbitten so badly that y bled in sno as he tromped through it. Initially, he met ith no success, as no one ould even talk ith him. So, he began to copy his sermons and slip m under people s doors. He also reached out to children of tons that he visited, and hen parents sa ho kind he as to ir children, y began to talk to him. By time Saint Francis returned home, through his riting and preaching, he had brought over 40,000 souls back into communion ith Catholic Church. At age of 35, Saint Francis became Bishop of Geneva, here he continued to labor ith great intensity, not only to in more converts back to Catholic faith, but also to catechize and form people placed under his charge. He served as a spiritual director for countless persons, offering direction both in person and in riting. This, in itself, as revolutionary, as commonly accepted notion at time as that holiness as only for priests and nuns, but Francis upheld that all people ere called by God to a life of holiness. He authored numerous orks including: Introduction of Devout Life, here he explained in a very practical terms ho to live a holy life in midst of orld. Saint Francis de Sales died in AD He as canonized in AD 1665, and in AD 1887, as declared a doctor of Church. In Introduction to Devout Life, Francis tells us that devotion must be practiced in different ays by nobleman, and by orking man; by servant, and by prince; by ido, by unmarried girl, and by married oman. But even this distinction is not sufficient, for practice of devotion must be adapted to strength, to occupation, and to duties of each one in particular [is it] proper for a bishop to ant to lead a solitary life like a Carthusian; or for people to be no more concerned than a Capuchin about increasing ir income; or for a orking man to spend his hole day in Church like a religious...? Saint Francis reminds us that, hile e are all called to holiness, this call must be adapted according to our state in life. And so, if you find that you don t have prayer life of a monk, that s OK, you re not supposed to (unless of course you are a monk). Each of us must have a prayer life adapted to life to hich God has called us. Everyone is called to prayer and service, but not everyone is called to prayer and service in exactly same ay. 2

Some ork in legal occupations such as domestic, factory, or construction ork, hile ors toil in illegal industries such as drug and arms trade, or panhandling. Although re is no single ay to identify victims of labor trafficking, some common patterns include: Victims are often kept isolated to prevent m from getting help. Their activities are restricted and y are often atched, escorted or guarded by associates of traffickers. Traffickers may coach m to anser questions ith a cover story about being a student or tourist. Victims may be blackmailed by traffickers using victims status as an undocumented alien or ir participation in an illegal industry. By threatening to report m to la enforcement or immigration officials, traffickers keep victims compliant. People ho are trafficked often come from unstable and economically devastated places, and traffickers frequently identify vulnerable populations characterized by oppression, high rates of illiteracy, little social mobility, and fe economic opportunities. Women and children are overhelmingly trafficked in labor arenas due to ir relative lack of poer, social marginalization, and overall inferior status hen compared to men in many places.
