Cathedral Parish Membership November: 1,038 families, 1,665 individuals Parish Finances Due to publishing deadlines, the eekly figures ill be included in next eek s bulletin. Clevel, Ohio Dear Parishioners, Friends, Visitors to the Cathedral, On November 30th, the Church ill celebrate the feast of one of the telve Apostles, Saint Andre. But, despite the incredible significance that the Apostles played in the life leadership of the early Church, the fact that it as their itness upon hich Christ established the foundation of the Church, very little is knon about his life. He as one of the first to follo Jesus (the protoclete first called ). We hear in John s Gospel: The next day John [the Baptist] as there again ith to of his disciples, as he atched Jesus alk by, he said, Behold, the Lamb of God. The to disciples heard hat he said folloed Jesus. Jesus turned sa them folloing him said to them, What are you looking for? They said to him, Rabbi (hich translated means Teacher), here are you staying? He said to them, Come, you ill see. So they ent sa here he as staying, they stayed ith him that day. It as about four in the afternoon. Andre, the brother of Simon Peter, as one of the to ho heard John folloed Jesus. (John 1:35-40). One of the very first things that Andre did after beginning to follo Jesus as that he ent found his brother Peter brought him to Jesus, telling him We have found the Messiah. Thus, giving a model to all Christians, that once e find Jesus, e are called to bring others to Him. What little e do kno about Andre s life comes to us from the Scriptures. Aside from being Peter s brother, the Gospels tell us that they had a fishing business together on the Sea of Galilee. Andre s name is also mentioned during several incidents during Jesus public ministry. The first is at the multiplication of the loaves, it as Andre ho pointed out that there as a young boy ith five loaves to fish, hich he remarked as not much considering the size of the crod. Another incident in the Gospels here Andre is mentioned, is hen Jesus his disciples ere leaving Jerusalem one of the disciples dre Jesus attention to one of the massive alls that supported the Temple. Jesus responded by saying that not one stone ould be left atop another stone. It as Andre, along ith Peter, James, John ho questioned Jesus about his ominous prediction: Tell us, hen this ill be, hat ill be the sign hen these things are to be accomplished (Mark 13:1-4). Shoing us it is ok to seek clarification from God ask questions to deepen our understing. A third incident in the Gospels finds Andre, along ith Philip, serving as interpreters/mediators beteen a group of Greeks ho had come to Jerusalem for the feast ho ere also seeking to meet Jesus (cf. Mark 12:20-22). After Pentecost, Andre, like the other disciples, fulfilled the Lord s comm to carry the Gospel to the ends of the earth. Christian tradition holds that Andre preached the Gospel in Russia Asia Minor, through Greece Turkey. It as around AD 60, in Greece, that he suffered torture eventually martyrdom on an X shaped cross (no knon as St. Andre s cross), being sentenced to death by the governor for baptizing his ife brother. He as crucified on an X shaped cross, because like his brother Peter, he did not believe himself to be orthy to die on the same type of cross upon hich the Lord had died. Most of his relics are in the Church of Saint Andre in Patras, Greece; although some of his relics are in Scotl; the Cathedral in Amalfi, Italy; a fe other places. Several times each year, since the 14th century AD, Saint Andre s bones in the Cathedral in Amalfi, Italy, produce a mysterious oil hich is called Saint Andre s Manna. People asked to be anointed ith this liquid many claim it has miraculous qualities. 2

4 The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist Steardship of the Earth - As Christians, e believe that the earth is entrusted to our faithful steardship. We are not its oners, but its caretakers on behalf of God. Ho can I be a good steard? Grocery Bags During this busy season, e may find ourselves doing more shopping than normal. This may mean that e ind up ith more shopping bags than usual. Plastic bags other plastic garbage carelessly alloed to blo aay kill as many as 1,000,000 aquatic creatures a year! Yet, these items can be easily recycled into ne items. Many grocery stores have bins in hich you can place these bags for recycling. Better yet, consider making use of reusable cloth shopping bags available near the checkout aisles of many groceries. They are not only good for the environment, they can be stylish fun too! For more ideas visit: <saintohncathedral.com/recycle>. Serving the Poor in Our Midst Each day, numerous people come to the rectory office seeking assistance. Through your generosity, ith the assistance of the orkers at the Bp. Cosgrove Center, e are able to fill some of their needs.
